  • Hi friends, today we are going to take a look at the new set of Cezanne colored pencils available from Creative Mark. These pencils are sold at Jerry's Artarama and they provided me this set to review. Jerry's also sells these sets on Amazon. *Links to Amazon are affiliate links. This review is not sponsored.
    120 set at Jerry's: www.jerrysartarama.com/cezann...
    72 set at Jerry's: www.jerrysartarama.com/cezann...
    120 set on Amazon: amzn.to/3fcrD4R
    72 set on Amazon: amzn.to/2KZPkzu
    Overview: These are touted as a lightfast brand of artist quality blendable wax-based set if pencils that can hold up to other more expensive brands. The intro price at Jerry's Artarama is $59.99 for the 120 set and $24.99 for the 72 set. Today we will put these pencils to the test on a variety of surfaces from watercolor paper, to sanded paper to a coloring book page and standard drawing paper.
    Pros:
    *Price (around 50 cents a pencil)
    *Blendable
    *Performs well on all surfaces tested but better on more textured surfaces as it allows for more pigment saturation.
    *Sharpens well to a strong point. (I only had one issue with breakage with a handheld sharpener and it is in the video, that pencil sharpened well in an electric tho) It also sharpens well with a blade.
    *Nice selection of colors although many pencils in the 120 set are "samey"
    *Colors layer well
    *The tin is nice and the trays are sturdier than most.
    *Very little glare or wax bloom even when burnishing.
    Cons:
    *Not available open stock
    *Several leads not centered making it wasteful when sharpening with a pencils sharpener so a knife was needed to sharpen those.
    *The white is weak, better as a blender than a white
    Other notes:
    These pencils claim to have a "good lightfastness" but I do not know how they arrived at that statement or if there are any specific ratings. I probably would not count on these not to fade. Use your judgement.
    Paper I tested these pencils on:
    Strawberry: 140# CP watercolor paper amzn.to/2SBiPvs
    Goldfinch: Toned watercolor paper www.hahnemuehle.com/en/artist...
    Coloring book: amzn.to/2zXpR7v
    Sanded pastel paper: amzn.to/2xBxShE
    *on the sanded paper I used Colored pencil powder blender shrsl.com/29fnp , Texture fixative shrsl.com/29fno , touch up texture shrsl.com/29fns and titanium white shrsl.com/29fny from Brush & Pencil.
    Bottom line, the more I used these the more I like them. I think they are a good value for your money but not as pigmented as Polychromos or Prismacolor. I recommend adding a prismacolor white to this set for maximum versatility. These pencils felt more like an oil-based pencil (more like polychromos than prismacolor) than wax and they worked very well on sanded paper with the powder blender technique. I plan to use that a lot with these pencils as they are much cheaper than polychromos for practice. I got much nicer results with rougher paper and had a bit of difficulty getting the color saturation I wanted on the smooth coloring book page but the smooth drawing paper with just a bit more tooth worked well. I recommend these for non-permanent work.

    I bought these as my "practice color pencils" before I bought my large Prisma set, and I often use them now to extend my Prismas. I have not been disappointed. I enjoy how they perform and how they feel in my hand and on the paper. These feel and perform more like Faber Castell to me, although less pigmented, and less like Prisma, but their advertisement compares them to Prisma. They feel very different to me but in a good way. I get tired of the mushy texture of Prisma and often find myself just grabbing a handful of a compatible palette of Cezannes with coloring books and away I go. I do not have to sharpen them nearly as often as Prisma and that is a big plus for coloring books. They are nice and blend and layer well. Beautiful colors, and yes a few really close ones but that is good since there is no open stock. My only complaint as Lindsay said no open stock and no color names but I really really like them for a budget practice set.

      There's no shame in starting with coloring pages in terms of working with colored pencils (either purchased or images from online). It's not art. But then it never claims to be. Using coloring pages to practice technique, to how to blend and shade, using other media with them such as odorless MS along with them can be good practice. If doing so I would recommend using decent paper and print your own copies. If you have a scanner and there is an image you really like scan it and print it on better paper. It's not necessary to use the best paper. Even the paper from tablets cut to size. I'm not a professional, just somebody who dabbles from time to time. As an aside there is a segment of the scale model hobby that the kits are either sold as a digital format or published in book form. The primary media is cardstock and chipboard (the stuff on the back of a writing tablet). The digital ones are great because if you mess up. Just print another one. The same can apply to coloring pages you are practicing with

      Glad it was helpful! I think it is important to be 100% honest because $60 is a lot of money to waste if the pencils are not going to do what you want or if you have something at home already that is better. I also think it's good to know if someone might have a relationship with the company who's product they are reviewing. I'd want to know. :)

    I bought the 72 piece set. I like the quality. They do have the colors numbered and swatched on the tin, but the set I received did not have the numbers or names on the pencils. Also the pencils were loose in the tin and not having numbers make it difficult to place in the correct order in the tin.

I finally found out I have a bone spur on the base of my hand by my pinky. I had my knuckles replaced but it is the bone spur that makes it so hard to color. I Enjoyed this so much. I have this set of pencils and I have bad arthritis. I had no trouble with my hands working with them. Pencil #123 did come with the wood cracked and trying to sharpen it out just made things worse. I don't know if this is a fairly usual occurrence with these pencils or a quality control issue as the broken wood was immediately obvious when I opened the tin.
    The pictures you made are amazing and hard to tell that they were made with colored pencils. Thank you for this informative video and I loved the point near the end when you showed how to make the flower and the leaf by adding layers. You do know what you are doing.

    Thank you for showing us your best colored pencil art work.. Those birds look like they could fly out of the paper. I also like that you always mention that that are ok for arthritis hands . I have been trying to get Prisma color pencils. I also am trying not to buy things made in China. I'd like to know if my their are any any pencils that are made in USA that are any good and have a good review. I don't want to spend money on junk. Thanks for letting us know about the new pencils.

      Prismacolor used to be made in USA prior to 2010 but I think they are made in Mexico now. Faber Castel is made in Germany, Derwent in the UK, Creatacolor (and soho) Austria, Koh i noor in the chech republic. Honestly I don;t know of any art pencils made in the USA but you can trust the above mentioned brands. Most stores and craft companies outsourse the media manufacturing to China or other Asian countries these days. Quality is hit or miss. I still rate prismacolors as my #1 fave.

    Thank you for the nice review. It’s lovely to see the still life pictures you do from nature 🌱🐇 ~I recently started to work in my new book ( new purchase ) Johanna Basford’s “ how to draw inky wonderlands” .. I found myself struggling to lay down colors.. used fine tip markers, color pencils, watercolor markers .. then I realized the problem was in the book paper. It feels like heavyweight Bristol hot plate. I have no idea what to use in this book, so far as color mediums go..I feel sorry if a young child tries to work in this book, they will be frustrated for sure. ~ I’m not sure what to do with this book . I can’t collage in it.. The paper would resist glue. I guess I could tape things .. ( sigh ) Well, at least I know it’s not my pencils !! 🤔😆😊

    Lindsay, first of all your drawings/pictures look amazing, they look like paintings. I realize this video is older,but someone recommended these to me and I have the Schpirerr Farben 96 set. I know a lot of people say these 2 sets are similar. They look similar, but the colors? Are they similar, and how they behave? Oh actually I’m not sure if you tried the Schpirerr Farben? First the Cezanne says they are wax? The Schpirerr are not wax for sure. They are softer for being oil, I like them, but sometimes still have to press harder. So, if you know the Schpirerr pencils, are the Cezanne easier to lay down, they are wax indeed? I don’t know if you still have or use the Cezanne, since its been close to 2 years from this video. Thanks .Also do you like the Brutfuner square pencils, are they easy to use?

    Nice to have options when the artist quality pencils have gotten so expensive in the last couple of months. Question, have you found a pencil that is as oily and as hard as the Polychromos? I am happy with my Prismacolor, but looking for something to create embossing lines, which if you haven't heard of the term are deep lines that you don't penetrate when coloring (they help maintain the line in leaf veins and things). When I try and do embossing lines with the Prismacolor they crumble a bit. I don't need the pigment, just the hardness I think. I may just need to buy a couple of neutral Polychromos, but I'm afraid to do so for fear that I'll like them! Yikes.

    • @MoonSpinners
      @MoonSpinners 4 роки тому +1

      Teresa Atkinson ....I know exactly what you mean with the embossing lines, and personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a white polychromo pencil. In fact, in my opinion, the entire range of polychromos are hard to beat, I’ve got so many different brands of pencils, and they’re still my number one choice. I hope I’ve been of some help 🤗

    • @Msboochie2
      @Msboochie2 4 роки тому +1

      Just buy the white Polychromos pencil, if they are available open stock in your area. That is the only use I can find for the white Polychromos, as otherwise I find it kind of useless. I don’t use that technique to often, maybe with fur, but mostly I just make lines with my exacto knife and color over it. I find I like a more opaque white, like the Prisma white or Derwent’s drawing pencil Chinese white or even the coloursoft.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 роки тому +2

      The prismacolor colorless blender is pretty hard as is the lyra blender which is oil based, if you don't want pigment that would be the way to go. Soho pencils are openstock at Jerrys for like 59 cents each I think and they are very hard. That said, I agree with the other commenters if the polychromos white works for you then grab an extra open stock.

      @@thefrugalcrafter I tried the Prismacolor colorless blender and it was only okay. So I tried a little stylus that came with a quilling kit and it worked very well...a little thick, but not bad if I'm careful. I guess I need to invest in more styli of various sizes. No. No. No, It's not that the pencil lead is not centered. I have several brands [including these] and it's just how a person applies pressure. That's all. Sometimes one is steady handed, sometimes not. Friend has had pencils come out "slanted", then I take it, put it in the same sharpener 2 Seconds Later and "fix" it. Or visa-versa. On an emotionally hard day I cannot sharpen any pencil. Fix it with a tiny hand held sharpener watching the blade cut just that side.

      Unfortunately it's near impossible to avoid. Even if you buy from U.S. companies, their products are made overseas. Cezanne is a brand from Jerry's Artarama, which is U.S. based company. Even if you ensured the product was made in the U.S., it's likely the resources & materials were sourced overseas manufacturers from China or Thailand. You can blame the weakening of anti-trust laws in the 80s and the trade agreements of the 90s & millennium.
