      If you don´t have much money then I suggest that you might want to buy a smaller set of high-quality colors like Polychromos. The reason for this suggestion is that they have very good pigments and are rather soft, therefore you can layer them quite well (if you use a good paper) and you can achieve an astonishing amount of colors just by "mixing" them this way :-) and you can buy additional pencils from time to time so that your collection grows over the time. Best wishes!

      star You are most welcome :D! I have made good experiences using the Polychromos this way, for instance to create a certain flesh tone or shadings of flesh tone (although Polychromos has a big range of colors) but according to the video above the Holbeins are even better in layering, my fingers itch for them ;-) Either way, it also depends on the quality of the paper, too..Thanks for replying and greetings from Germany :D!

    Japanese and Germans are perfectionists in quality. They dont compromise. So I would say Holbein number 1 and Faber Castell number Two. Thanks for your detailed video explanations and time.

    • @j.r.5803
      @j.r.5803 5 років тому +8

      So true. In everything that they decide to do, they do it so well. The old era of portuguese and italian people were also perfectionists unfortunally the modern world changed them a lot.

      Anand Beera I have agree. Stabilo is my all time favorite for markers and pens. I do have one set of their pencils. They are hard and sturdy but not big on deep colors.

    • @HelenaPulido
      @HelenaPulido 4 роки тому +8

      Portuguese people are still perfectionists in what they do. Shoes, woodwork and even suits for the Olympics made in Portugal are some of the best things (the list goes on but these are some things that popped on my mind). We aren't more developed because Portugal is still a poor country when compared to the rest of the Europe so it's hard to develop a brand here. I can only speak about Portugal because I'm portuguese myself. I won't speak of Italians but I do assume they still do amazing things!
      (I apologise for my poor English)

      Wow, Holbein hasn’t allowed themselves to be ASTM tested or even Blue Wool tested and did miserably when colored pencil artist association did basically blue wool testing on them. They are oily like an oil slick and don’t play well with other pencils. I am a colored pencil artist and these are not professional artist grade quality and Holbein charges over $3 a pencil. Derwent Lightfast goes on sale frequently at Blicks Art for $2 something per pencil and they went through both tests. They were underhandedly advertised that way is my opinion because they are super duper cheap in Japan.

      Susan Bauer to Southpaw Creative. Why do say do not use Holbein for colouring books? I'm about to buy a set and you gave no reason so before I make the move I'd like to know. I love colouring daily and use my 12 Pastel Holbeins that I tested first and I adore them for my colouring books. Too expensive to make a mistake if you have a good reason for the comment.
      Good video btw thanks. I'm an addict and have thousands of mediums and now want Holbeins😊

    • @ArtistJane

      I say that basically an artist I would not use them for coloring books since they are so expensive. I save them for my personal art endeavors. It's up to the user of course. If you want to use them for coloring books, go for it. It's just a personal preference. They're incredibly high quality so I'd rather use them on my own creations. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy them!

    I am a just hobby artist. I took a color pencil class about 4 years ago and the instructor required prismacolor pencils. I had no idea how much nicer Faber Castell polychromos were until an artist at my local art store told me to try them. I’ve heard that Prismacolor used to be a quality pencil manufacturer, but now the pencils are not good quality. After watching this video, I’m excited to try the holbein! Thanks for the awesome video 😊

      I thought of all the money I shouldn't have spent on Prisma Color when I first tried Polychromos. Wow, individual personal preferences aside, these were for ME! That is, they are now my second choice... Caran d'Arch Luminance pencils are smooth but hold a point at the same time. Wax based, I haven't had a problem with wax bloom. This time, I bought a much smaller set (20)... they are SUPER expensive! Now to try Holbein, I can't wait 'til I can afford some. People think I have too many pencils, but each set differs from the other. Sometimes a small color tint that one barely notices, still different though. One of the big things si that each has their own one-of-a-kind colors that are to die for. Anyway, because each has their own characteristics, I can find a use for each brand's pencil even though the color name shown is the same. But, (Prisma Color aside), they are all a joy to use!

      Jan Kimbell You can layer & blend, and get just about (& perhaps) any color imaginable with these. a little turpentine, or blending solution, and you can make anything with even the smaller sets, although a tad easier to have more colors! (Who wouldn't want them all?)

  • @Aprilap
    @Aprilap 7 років тому +2

    I feel that, one advantage of using cp is - i could concentrate on details. After using holbein to make 3-4 layers, i feel difficult to further using another color to draw details or clear lines on top of that. Dont know if this happened on other brands. Another shortcome is - i can only use holbrin liquid blender. No other choose. After applying the liquid blender and wait til it dry. Its even harder to draw further layers or details on it. I love these fabulous color and hope to find solutions.

    Just wondering why Holbein is not for colouring? I just ordered pastels 12 to start. I have Luminance, Caram D'Ache Museum, Polychromos, Albrecht Durer, Derwent Inktense and 3 other Derwents but they don't rate alongside Inktense for great colouring results and Prismas. I actually have well over 1000 pencils not including markers or gels because I'm addicted but those I've specifically mentioned are my favourites. I was fortunate that my Prismas have not broken as they were a risk but in the end I wanted every brand I could get..
    The glory of smooth pencils like Polys and Durers and Caran D'Ache just give me goosebumps.😜
    Thanks for the review.
    Loved it and those Holbeins are surreal but damn they're expensive. One day that set will come home too😉
    At least 12 are coming as eBay has a voucher for Sept 10th. Spend over $50AUD and you get AUD$20 back so I took the opportunity to get those 12 glorious pastel Holbeins.
    Sorry I do carry on a lot.🙄

      Hi! To clarify, I meant that I wouldn't use to Holbeins personally for a coloring book or something like that - just my serious/professional work because they're so expensive and the open stock aren't sold here in the US. I know what you mean! I have sooo many art supplies including pencils - vintage colored pencils, polys, Pablo's, holbein, Albrecht durer, art grip, inktense, graphitint, tricolour, etc etc. You'll see more of that here on this channel!

      Yes I use them for colouring mainly actually mostly for colouring and I use different pencils for different books depending on the paper. I am home due to illness so I don't work and I colour about 6 hours daily to help me stay sane...lol.
      If you are like me maybe you use pencils depending on your mood. One day I feel like Prismas, another Polys etc and other days I use all of them :)).along with gel pens and markers and Pitt pens.

    I got the 150 set of Holbien found on ebay, came from Japan, Oh those subdued lights-pastels and subdued colors (not just all bright) and the soft white coverage wins over all. I got them upon seeing an actual light fast test that someone posted where the samples of all 150 was placed in direct sun light with black tape over one side for comparison, Holbein's light-fast ratings are right on! You are right, this is investment in making Art, not recommended to spend this kind of money for a coloring book.

That's how I am with Polychromos, Holbein and Pablos. Polys layer the best (in my opinion), Holbein are the most beautiful, and Pablos are best for detail. Cons for them: Polychromos don't have many pastel shades, Holbein can break when sharpened because they are softer, and Pablos don't have enough reds. That is my opinion! 💖

      Sean Mooney Its because Prismacolors (some of them at least, I'm pretty sure that it's better nowadays) have quality control issues. Many artists can tell you more, but to sum it up, they break way to easily. You probably have a newer set, so the issues have gone down, buts they're just way to fragile for many artists.
      Also, 2/3 of the Prismacolors are not lightfast, which lowers the quality for artists as well.

    • @stacywiggins7808

      Sean Mooney I used to use prismacolors. 15 years ago they were awesome, I never thought I would use another brand, but now they break way too easy. I've wasted entire pencils just trying to sharpen them. They'll try and tell you it's because of the soft lead, but it's not. They never broke on me until about 7 years ago.

They are definitely strange to work with, since I've gotten use to this set of Wax based Pencils I'm sure very little people have heard of. Honestly, I'd like to send you a set of them sometime, since they don't sell them anywhere other a Dollarstore here in Canada. I'm not overly experienced with different pencil brands, and higher end stuff, but I swear these things feel high end despite that. They seem to blend well, Are seemingly well pigmented, and each of the four 18packs are only 4$ Canadian (before tax).

      @ArtistJane  7 років тому +7

      +lotopauanka z. These are not facts, but opinions. Whether you believe in a brand being superior to another is based on opinion, experience, and performance. I believe Polychromos are a great option for those who are tired of having issues with Prismacolor. I believe they are manufactured with better quality ingredients and care, and they have performed far superior to what I've experienced in recent years with Prismacolors.
      Yep, the holbein pastels are pretty amazing to work with. They are great experimenting with when you want an uncommon highlight on skin tone and in layering in general.

      Southpaw Creative Arts well, the price and longevity (over 250yrs for fc and less than 80 yrs for pc) of the brand are facts to me... of course people can have different opinions on the same product, but I think it was just phrased poorly. Nobody says shminke is an alternative to whatever other brand or that COPIC markers are alternative to pro markers etc.

    • @heatherleisure9217
      @heatherleisure9217 7 років тому +1

      Prismacolors are only good for getting some of the lighter unique colors in open stock. And maybe the black too. The soft core black Prismacolor is still a fair beast to behold when you want to paint with it and just grind it into a nub in no time. But still waxy, of course. I'm so glad I only spent small money on the Prismacolor soft-core and Verithin Manga mix pack before going full-throttle and getting the entire Polychromos set. Saved me a lot of money if I had bought the entire Prisma set first.
      Prismas are garbage now. I even threw out the formerly-interesting Verithins after Irojiten hit the market and blew Verithins out of the water.
      Bye bye Prismacolor, it's been fun... but the times... they are a-changing ...
      Oil-based pencils are not particularly renowned for having very opaque light colors, and that's just because of the blendability and layering potential of their being oil-based.
      But fuck that, if you're just going for some of the open-stock lighter colors for their opacity and softness, go straight to the Caran d'Ache Luminance or Derwent Drawing (not Coloursoft) instead of Prismacolor. That Derwent Chinese White and Luminance Buff Titanium won't let you down, no sir.
      Now these Holbien ... those pastel colors had me drooling. Unique colors like that are why I got the whole Irojiten set (not impressed with the florescent set though, but wasn't surprised since I've never seen a fluorescent colored pencil I actually liked). I guess I know what I'm getting at my next art splurge...
      And Copics are an alternative to Promarkers. Copic's only advantage is their wide color palette ... well lol, that's Prismacolor's only advantage too, isn't that a funny coincidence. Side by side testing has demonstrated that Promarkers, especially their Brushmarkers, have better quality ink and more uniform color - the Copic inks like to leave little speckles of white for some reason. But nope, Promarkers give you solid coverage. The Promarkers perform better than Copics even on Copic's own paper. The downside is that they are ugly fucking markers, but your painting can't tell people how cool your markers look so it doesn't matter.

    • @goilo888
      @goilo888 7 років тому +1

      Do NOT use Copics if you are serious about the longevity of your work. Hang a painting on your wall and watch the colours disappear week by week.

      Well happy birthday! I’m happy you’re having a great time with the Holbein! I’ve only used the graphite line of the Mitsubishi Uni, but I can imagine their colored pencils are fantastic too.

    Just bought a 120 set of Faber Castell, I’m so excited!!! I will continue to use my Prismacolors but I think just mainly for sketches.

    Since I live in Japan I can get the Holbein pencils cheaper. 😜 And they’re available right down the street at my local art store! (Sorry for bragging, but those pencils are a dream to work with!)

    I'm planning on getting the Faber Castell Polychromos set of 120 soon (and then hopefully save up to get the Holbein pencils) because Prismacolor has really let me down. I was first introduced to them in high school by my art teacher and fell in love with Prismas, so I got my own set. After a few years of using them I was happy with the vibrancy of the colors and how well they blended, but soon found myself having difficulty with how often the lead would break and the god awful wax bloom, not to mention just how little you can actually layer colors.
    I'm hoping the Polychromos are as good as everyone makes them out to be. It'd be nice having colored pencils that don't smear and allow for better layering. :/

    I have the fabel castell sett with 120 and 36 pencils and i really love them! They are amasing to draw with and they are so soft so they are easy to smudge out and i love it!
