I was feeding the feral cats at my dad's house and one morning there were suddenly 4 orange tabbies on the deck all together when I'd only ever seen two at a time. I mumbled "I must be losing my marbles!" before opening a couple more cans of food for them. The next day my dad told me "Marbles is on the deck. I think he's hungry." I said "Pardon?" He was 80 and I thought he was having a senior moment but he came back with "That little orange feral. I thought you said his name is Marbles and that you'd lost him. Well he's on the deck right now and he looks hungry." Two months later that feral kitten tamed himself and came inside. He was my dad's best buddy right up until Dad passed away in Feb 2023 and yes, we named him Marbles. He's amazing.
my father named our cats' bed on the radiator "cuddly cuddly" ("Kuschi-Kuschi" in German). we don't know why he assumed that we were calling the bed that. the name is now incorporated in our family dictionary. he was 50-60 at the time, not old.
my favorite so far has been Roomba. blind as a bat and dumber than a rock, and cries offendedly when she walks into the couch that's been sitting in the same place the past twelve years. 😂
Aww! I love the precious little dummies! My Katie mistook the swivel lid on the bin for a solid surface her first day home from the shelter. ❤ It rotated her as she fell in so she landed lying on her back in the bin, looking up with perfect confusion. It took me 12 minutes to get the laughter under control enough to scoop her out! She was the sweetest little ditzy angel ❤ I named one kitten Runa, (still have her) and as she grew we realized she has long fur and hilariously short little munchkin legs, so she sweeps the floor like a little roomba everywhere she goes! As you can imagine i have to brush her tummy twice a day, and she loves the attention and laughter
For many years we had a cat named One More. Poor thing, he was one of a litter of four that we took in; he was always the last one to appear for feeding. That, led to me saying, Okay, I see three kittens, where's one more?" By the time the others were named something reasonable, he was answering to One More.
Pretty much the same with my tuxedo boy named Oreo. When my uncle took him on, I promised I'd take him if something happened to my uncle. Sadly, my uncle had to move into a nursing home after a long hospitalization after a stroke... So Oreo came to me. Word is, he was feral, and taken in by a local rescue because he was shy as heck, but friendly once you got ahold of him... The two little girls in the foster home named him Oreo... Had it been two little boys, the cat's name totally would have been Batman, as he has a black snout and a black patch on his chest... But it is what it is. Then I looked into the origin of the name for the cookie, turns out it was named after a flower called Oreodaphne... Oreo comes from the Greek Oros, meaning mountain. So my cat's name is really Mountain Laurel Barnes (my uncle's last name), and I'm fine with it now. lol
My cat's name is Pepsi for a very similar reason. Couldn't think of any better name and they were calling him that at the shelter so I didn't want to confuse him. Now if I get another cat, I'm hoping to continue the food/drink thing. I've seen some named Root Beer.
My cat's name is Frank. That's short for Frankly I Don't Need This Aggravation. It's what I said when I discovered that his feral mother had abandoned him on my porch, and I have admittedly said it to him often in the six years since. He's a big grumpy lump. I love him anyway.

My cat Frank is more like Lumpy from Leave It to Beaver: dumpy, difficult, none-too-bright. He is what he is, and he is amusing (at least I think so). Frankly I Don't Need This Aggravation is entirely accurate. There's no point calling an animal something that he plainly cannot live up to.
Yeah, I am too. I never thought I'd keep an entire litter of tabby tuxies & their mom, so I named the ones I didn't plan on keeping after myself. Ones got my 1st name the others got my last.😅
We have a cat that adopted us. Walked off the street and in our house. He had tummy problems. His poor rear went off constantly. So we named him Pumba. We took him to the vet and got the problem fixed up.

We were going to name our orange cat Fandral, for the badass flaming cat druid in World of Warcraft. We got him home and realized he's not remotely badass, he's dumber than a box of hammers. So we named him Taco, for the palindrome not the food.
My dad has a cat named Drogo. Who is not remotely as brave as his namesake 😂 he has a sister named Khatleesi, though. She's only somewhat braver than he is. My Anton--their litter-mate--has been known to pick fights, though. Cats are weird.

We had some guests over one evening and they had left the lid open. We had a litter of kittens with only one boy in it, so we started calling him the Little Boy. It was kind of too late to change it by the time he got huge.
I brought my cat, Fluff Daddy, to the vet & the receptionist saida the whole clinic was excited to meet him. It was anticlimactic as although Fluff Daddy was the biggest & fluffiest kitten of the litter, he turned out to be smaller than average & not at all fluffy. She looked so disappointed😂.
My newest cat is Puppy. I normally only adopt older strays but My (at the time) one year old rescue boxer thought my two mature cats were dog toys to be chased. I needed a near kitten aged cat to raise with him and teach him cats are not toys. So I named her Puppy and told my dog she was his puppy. Also rewarded him with bites of wet cat food when he paid attention to me and not the kitten. I kept her in her own room and introduced them slowly. It worked. My boxer and his Puppy are currently sleeping butt to butt on my bed. The little rescued feral kitten is now a huge and beautiful long haired calico. The two older cats now see that Hank is not a real threat and give him a swipe of the claws if he gets too pushy. Took a year to get everyone settled but it’s a relatively calm household now.

I inherited my paternal grandmother's cat when she died in December 2009. She never named her cat, because the last cat she had (Thomas) disappeared. So it was like she was afraid to name her. I took my tortie Milk Dud to a new vet for the first time and the intake nurse told me how cute her name is 😊 Her nickames include Love Bug, Nebula (bc she's almost a void with splotches of color), Umbreon Who Only Knows Scratch, and Habibi (which started out as me greeting her with, "Hi baby!" and the words slowly blurring together; it also works out that Habibi is an Arabic term of endearment). But mostly she's just Dud or Lil Dud 🧡
Not cats but the vet I work at has some dogs with name I think are very clever. We are in Atlanta and have a Chipper Bones, we have a rescue named Ozzy Pawsbourne, we have one name Sniff McGriff, and one of vet techs has a dog named Kenai who is part chow and part german shepard, and another vet tech has a dog named Safira who is a golden retriever. One of our doctors has an aussie named Teton and another doctor has a golden named Brisket. I love the uniqueness of pet names. One of my fave patients is named Timber. We do have one cat named Toots because her farts can clear a room and she does so often.
My cousin rescued a baby skunk that was nearby a mother skunk that got killed by a car. She took it to get it's smell sacs or whatever removed. His name? Willie Smellson

Our cats have long names, because just like with my kids I needed a way to let them know when they were in trouble (my kids were like “oh no mom said my first, middle, & last name, I must really be in trouble!” 😹) So ur cats are Kaylee Inara River Von’Kitteh & Pumpkin Spice Pie Von’Kitteh! And that one is what is on their chips. I’m so glad because since naming them several kitties named Pumpkin have escaped (& been found!)

My boy is Persiflage, another word for bantering bank and forth, because he loves to chat to me. It's shortened to Parsley because he's largely decorative.
I have a Mocha and a Chase. Mocha is a torbie, so I looked at her and said she looks like a caramel mocha, so I call her my caramel mocha catte sometimes. Chase is named because he's a dick who kept chasing Mocha when we brought them both home. He doesn't do that (as much) anymore, because he's getting old and she isn't as much of a fraidy cat. It's mostly reserved for when she's being an obnoxious brat who won't stop slapping him. I'm not saying either of them really respond to their names, or their many, many nicknames (so many nicknames). They mostly respond to the humans getting up from their seats, a human going into the bathroom, or being anywhere near their food.
I have a Chihuahua I adopted from the pound. I named her Dr Elka VonShredder. 😂 yes she lives up to that name. There isn’t a piece of paper in this house left intact.😂

My vet had an office cat named Teetee. Short for "Tripod Two". She had had one leg amputated, and since she was the second cat to suffer that fate . . . . When she meowed, she sounded like she smoked unfiltered Camels and drank neat Scotch whisky. Another cat was named "Pirate", because when he was installed he had one eye. When I met him, though, he had lost the other one. Pirate was to good a name to lose, though.
I work at an animal rescue and we currently have a few cats with funky names. We've had Tesco, Ocado, Waitrose and Asda (which are all supermarkets here in the UK if you didn't know but they were abandoned at a vet practice, not at any of the supermarkets 😂) and Mogwai, after a character in the Gremlins 🤣 we have a lot of funny cat names at the rescue but those are the ones that come to mind right now
I adopted a stray boy in my apartment complex and called him Alexander Hamilton, after the line in the Hamilton musical "Martha Washington named her feral tomcat after HIM". There's another cat in the complex who is still too timid to let me approach but he comes around for food regularly. He and Hamilton are kind of frenemies. Sometimes they get along but other times not so much. So of course we christened the other one Aaron Purr. Hamilton's arch nemesis, of course!

I call the grey and white feral at my house Ghost Cat. He’s barely let me see him for two years but sleeps under my camper that’s parked in the driveway, eats extra cat food left for him at my dad’s house in the middle of the night, and apparently took care of our rampant skink problem. He only recently stayed on the edge of the porch when I went outside so that’s progress, and he got a large plate of chicken (that I cooked for my dog) as a reward.
Black and White Cat. A stray cat adopted our family. She came every day for food and I would say the black and white cat is here. I feed her, worm and flea treatment given. Then it was time for us to move into a new house. She had become part of our daily life and she had grown on all of us. So I caught her and looked her in our new house’s bathroom for 3 days (advice from vet). Then let her have free run of the house. It was hard to keep saying black and white cat so we shorted it to B.W. Our vet always asked why we named her B.W and not W.B making us laugh. She lived with us for 15 happy years. She was the best loving and friendly cat I have ever had.

A group of friends and I worked in rabbit rescue for ages. One of those dear friends had 2 House Rabbits named Chaos and Disorder. One day, while avoiding accidentally stepping on her buns during crazy play time, our friend tripped and tumbled down a flight of stairs. When asked what happened by the ER nurse, and not thinking, she said she was avoiding Chaos and Disorder and got a trip down the stairs instead. Several of us got calls that afternoon to prevent our friend from taking a trip for a psych evaluation. It was our favorite story to share with every potential rabbit adopter for at least a decade: keep an eye on your buns and keep your wits about you in the ER. 😂

My kitty before Aslan was Ivy Niesse. I rescued her from a hoarding situation right before Christmas. It means Christmas elf. I called her Ivy most of the time RIP. I also had Tink or Tinkerbell. She would always jump really high when startled and was always just light on her feet. We also had Elvis, who was a tuxedo cat. Very fitting fat cat. 💜✌️

One of ours was named Buster after the crash test dummy on Mythbusters because the poor dear had vision problems and sometimes would under or over estimate jumps and crash in to things ( we got better at making sure he didn't do stupid things a week or two after we adopted him but occasionally he'd miss a jump on to the couch)
We have a tuxedo looking cat named Newspaper. My dad named him after that “What's red, white and black? A newspaper!” joke and now I always yell “Come here Newspaper!”. His brother who is grey tabby looking cat has a normal name, “Star”. The neighbors look at us like we're crazy for yelling Newspaper and then a black and white cat comes running. Star screams constantly and Newspaper has polite little meows unless he's simply starving (They both get fed at least twice daily with high quality wet cat food and are, not infact, starving)
I had a tuxedo cat from a rescue shelter which specialized in FIV+ and FELV+ cats. He was found on the campus of a college, and their mascot was a Knight, so the shelter named him Knight. He's no longer with us, but we recently adopted a pair of tuxedo kittens, and in honor of Knight, we named them Rook and Bishop.
My parents had a little torti named Beep. When she appeared at their kitchen door during the proverbial stormy night she screamed at the top of her lungs. They brought her in the house. Tiny, thin, vet said at least 6 months old by her teeth. After that first scream she never made a sound bigger than a tiny beep. Purred constantly for about 11 years, wonderful girl. Late one night she slipped out of the door, Mom and Dad ran to look for her. Found her eventually but then realized what they must have sounded like running around in the woods yelling "BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!". Yeah, gotta be a little careful😂
We addopted a really friendly ferral cat, he would always come running across the field we lived next to at the time at the sound of our voices just to get pets and id say "hey little buddy!" Every time, at some point he started answering to buddy and he came with us when we moved
I know someone who had a cockatiel named "Sal,' short for "Salmonella." They previously recused a dog found wandering the streets. She was not in great health and continually seemed to be on her last leg. They called her "Asia." Short for "Euthanasia". Dark humor but still funny.

Yeah, I am too. I never thought I'd keep an entire litter of tabby tuxies & their mom, so I named the ones I didn't plan on keeping after myself. Ones got my 1st name the others got my last.😅

We have a cat that adopted us. Walked off the street and in our house. He had tummy problems. His poor rear went off constantly. So we named him Pumba. We took him to the vet and got the problem fixed up.
that's exactly how my brother got his cat 😂 (minus the tummy problems). He wasn't much of a cat person until the cat distribution network told him "the fuck you aren't."
That's how I got my cat, including the tummy problems. 😂 Okay, technically he walked into a friend's arms, but she just knew he was mine, and as soon as I met him he decided I was His Person. 🥰

My latest orange, Stanley, was found outside a watch store where he religiously waited for the colony feeder to fill up the food bowl nearby. He got his name because he was a Clockwork Orange (after Stanley Kubrick).
If only you had found 2 orange cats. You could've had the author and the director! Anthony and Stanley! (Which also just sounds like a generic law firm, lmao.) You took advantage of an amazing naming opportunity, and this is now one of my favorite naming backstories ever.
Brilliant! I night I got my Orange in the70s, was raining and the song Daniel was on the radio! My father didn't want another cat,but Daniel crawled up his chest and fell asleep. My father asked what his name was and I told him" Daniel " my father looked down at the sleeping kitten and muttered " Dammit" my father and he were the closest of friends and my dad forever called him Dammit!😊😊😊 Miss them both!❤❤❤

We were going to name our orange cat Fandral, for the badass flaming cat druid in World of Warcraft. We got him home and realized he's not remotely badass, he's dumber than a box of hammers. So we named him Taco, for the palindrome not the food.
I was going to name my black cat Azrael (like Gargamel’s cat in the smurfs) but he was too cute and not remotely fierce… so Squish he became 😅
My dad has a cat named Drogo. Who is not remotely as brave as his namesake 😂 he has a sister named Khatleesi, though. She's only somewhat braver than he is. My Anton--their litter-mate--has been known to pick fights, though. Cats are weird.

The last cat that I rescued is named Inigo. You see I usually keep my toilet lid closed and when I would go to brush my teeth before bed he would get up on the toilet and watch me. We had some guests over one evening and they had left the lid open. I went in to brush my teeth and he hopped up on the toilet as always only the lid was up, so he ended up going for a swim...thus the name In I go!

We had a cat show up on our farm years ago. Every night that summer, she would have long, loud conversations with herself under our bedroom window. We referred to her as “that chatty cat,” so when she adopted us that fall we called her Chatty Cat.

We had a litter of kittens with only one boy in it, so we started calling him the Little Boy. It was kind of too late to change it by the time he got huge.

I brought my cat, Fluff Daddy, to the vet & the receptionist saida the whole clinic was excited to meet him. It was anticlimactic as although Fluff Daddy was the biggest & fluffiest kitten of the litter, he turned out to be smaller than average & not at all fluffy. She looked so disappointed😂.
My newest cat is Puppy. I normally only adopt older strays but My (at the time) one year old rescue boxer thought my two mature cats were dog toys to be chased. I needed a near kitten aged cat to raise with him and teach him cats are not toys. So I named her Puppy and told my dog she was his puppy. Also rewarded him with bites of wet cat food when he paid attention to me and not the kitten. I kept her in her own room and introduced them slowly. It worked. My boxer and his Puppy are currently sleeping butt to butt on my bed. The little rescued feral kitten is now a huge and beautiful long haired calico. The two older cats now see that Hank is not a real threat and give him a swipe of the claws if he gets too pushy. Took a year to get everyone settled but it’s a relatively calm household now.

I named my tortie cat Harvey after Harvey Dent aka Two face from Batman due to the spilt colors on her face. It wasn’t until I went to the vet for her first visit and they asked for the last name that I realized my mistake. My last name is Weinstein… I named my cat Harvey Weinstein 🤦♀️

I inherited my paternal grandmother's cat when she died in December 2009. She never named her cat, because the last cat she had (Thomas) disappeared. So it was like she was afraid to name her. However, I did hear her call the cat missy, just because she was a girl cat. So...once I inherited her I made her name official. Missy added joy and excitement to our lives until November 2020.

Her nickames include Love Bug, Nebula (bc she's almost a void with splotches of color), Umbreon Who Only Knows Scratch, and Habibi (which started out as me greeting her with, "Hi baby!" and the words slowly blurring together; it also works out that Habibi is an Arabic term of endearment). But mostly she's just Dud or Lil Dud 🧡

Not cats but the vet I work at has some dogs with name I think are very clever. We are in Atlanta and have a Chipper Bones, we have a rescue named Ozzy Pawsbourne, we have one name Sniff McGriff, and one of vet techs has a dog named Kenai who is part chow and part german shepard, and another vet tech has a dog named Safira who is a golden retriever. One of our doctors has an aussie named Teton and another doctor has a golden named Brisket. I love the uniqueness of pet names. One of my fave patients is named Timber. We do have one cat named Toots because her farts can clear a room and she does so often.
My black-and-white doodle mix is named Blair, after my favorite band (citizen soldier)'s lead singer's daughter.

My brother in law had a dog named Ask’em. He was the airport dog. When my BIL took over running the FBO, people would ask him what his dog’s name was. He’d just say Ask’em, because no one knew the dogs name. He became Ask’em for ever more. He was much loved by everyone around the airport.

Our cats have long names, because just like with my kids I needed a way to let them know when they were in trouble (my kids were like “oh no mom said my first, middle, & last name, I must really be in trouble!” 😹) So ur cats are Kaylee Inara River Von’Kitteh & Pumpkin Spice Pie Von’Kitteh! And that one is what is on their chips. I’m so glad because since naming them several kitties named Pumpkin have escaped (& been found!)

I have a Mocha and a Chase. Mocha is a torbie, so I looked at her and said she looks like a caramel mocha, so I call her my caramel mocha catte sometimes. Chase is named because he's a dick who kept chasing Mocha when we brought them both home. He doesn't do that (as much) anymore, because he's getting old and she isn't as much of a fraidy cat. It's mostly reserved for when she's being an obnoxious brat who won't stop slapping him.
I'm not saying either of them really respond to their names, or their many, many nicknames (so many nicknames). They mostly respond to the humans getting up from their seats, a human going into the bathroom, or being anywhere near their food.
I have a Chihuahua I adopted from the pound. I named her Dr Elka VonShredder. 😂 yes she lives up to that name. There isn’t a piece of paper in this house left intact.😂

My vet had an office cat named Teetee. Short for "Tripod Two". She had had one leg amputated, and since she was the second cat to suffer that fate . . . . When she meowed, she sounded like she smoked unfiltered Camels and drank neat Scotch whisky.
Another cat was named "Pirate", because when he was installed he had one eye. When I met him, though, he had lost the other one. Pirate was to good a name to lose, though.
I work at an animal rescue and we currently have a few cats with funky names. We've had Tesco, Ocado, Waitrose and Asda (which are all supermarkets here in the UK if you didn't know but they were abandoned at a vet practice, not at any of the supermarkets 😂) and Mogwai, after a character in the Gremlins 🤣 we have a lot of funny cat names at the rescue but those are the ones that come to mind right now

I adopted a stray boy in my apartment complex and called him Alexander Hamilton, after the line in the Hamilton musical "Martha Washington named her feral tomcat after HIM". There's another cat in the complex who is still too timid to let me approach but he comes around for food regularly. He and Hamilton are kind of frenemies. Sometimes they get along but other times not so much. So of course we christened the other one Aaron Purr. Hamilton's arch nemesis, of course!

my best friend just got a cat and named him Jack Catlas. After the Yu-Gi-Oh character Jack Atlas. The kitty is absolutely adorable but his name makes me laugh a little whenever I hear it.
I call the grey and white feral at my house Ghost Cat. He’s barely let me see him for two years but sleeps under my camper that’s parked in the driveway, eats extra cat food left for him at my dad’s house in the middle of the night, and apparently took care of our rampant skink problem. He only recently stayed on the edge of the porch when I went outside so that’s progress, and he got a large plate of chicken (that I cooked for my dog) as a reward.
Black and White Cat. A stray cat adopted our family. She came every day for food and I would say the black and white cat is here. I feed her, worm and flea treatment given. Then it was time for us to move into a new house. She had become part of our daily life and she had grown on all of us. So I caught her and looked her in our new house’s bathroom for 3 days (advice from vet). Then let her have free run of the house. It was hard to keep saying black and white cat so we shorted it to B.W. Our vet always asked why we named her B.W and not W.B making us laugh. She lived with us for 15 happy years. She was the best loving and friendly cat I have ever had.
🤔 My 2 🐈⬛ Chaos & Havoc and my sheepdog Mayhem were Always a hit at my Vets, one of my Business names was The House of Bedlam so it all made sense for that time 🤣👏🏻💕🙏🏼
A group of friends and I worked in rabbit rescue for ages. One of those dear friends had 2 House Rabbits named Chaos and Disorder. One day, while avoiding accidentally stepping on her buns during crazy play time, our friend tripped and tumbled down a flight of stairs. When asked what happened by the ER nurse, and not thinking, she said she was avoiding Chaos and Disorder and got a trip down the stairs instead. Several of us got calls that afternoon to prevent our friend from taking a trip for a psych evaluation. It was our favorite story to share with every potential rabbit adopter for at least a decade: keep an eye on your buns and keep your wits about you in the ER. 😂

My kitty before Aslan was Ivy Niesse. I rescued her from a hoarding situation right before Christmas. It means Christmas elf. I called her Ivy most of the time RIP.

One of ours was named Buster after the crash test dummy on Mythbusters because the poor dear had vision problems and sometimes would under or over estimate jumps and crash in to things ( we got better at making sure he didn't do stupid things a week or two after we adopted him but occasionally he'd miss a jump on to the couch)

We have a tuxedo looking cat named Newspaper. My dad named him after that “What's red, white and black? A newspaper!” joke and now I always yell “Come here Newspaper!”. His brother who is grey tabby looking cat has a normal name, “Star”. The neighbors look at us like we're crazy for yelling Newspaper and then a black and white cat comes running. Star screams constantly and Newspaper has polite little meows unless he's simply starving (They both get fed at least twice daily with high quality wet cat food and are, not infact, starving)

I had a tuxedo cat from a rescue shelter which specialized in FIV+ and FELV+ cats. He was found on the campus of a college, and their mascot was a Knight, so the shelter named him Knight. He's no longer with us, but we recently adopted a pair of tuxedo kittens, and in honor of Knight, we named them Rook and Bishop.
I had a cat named Oatmeal for much the same reason as Bundt Cake. Fortunately without the days of liquid cleanup.

My parents had a little torti named Beep. When she appeared at their kitchen door during the proverbial stormy night she screamed at the top of her lungs. They brought her in the house. Tiny, thin, vet said at least 6 months old by her teeth. After that first scream she never made a sound bigger than a tiny beep. Purred constantly for about 11 years, wonderful girl.
Late one night she slipped out of the door, Mom and Dad ran to look for her. Found her eventually but then realized what they must have sounded like running around in the woods yelling "BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!". Yeah, gotta be a little careful😂

We addopted a really friendly ferral cat, he would always come running across the field we lived next to at the time at the sound of our voices just to get pets and id say "hey little buddy!" Every time, at some point he started answering to buddy and he came with us when we moved

I know someone who had a cockatiel named "Sal,' short for "Salmonella." They previously recused a dog found wandering the streets. She was not in great health and continually seemed to be on her last leg. They called her "Asia." Short for "Euthanasia". Dark humor but still funny.
