Just a tip I found. Instead of the slide hammer, I used an angled pick and it slide right out. Using this guide I did mine in an hour for all 5 pins. Thanks for the videos!
Keep em coming! I'm about to start a manual swap on my 330Ci and I'm sure I'm going to be referring to this series throughout.
you’re an awesome mechanic, from when i had my e46 to now my manual e36 you never stop making vids people need. much love!
Thanks for the video - came in handy for a moment of last-minute panic when I was afraid I'd mixed up the pins for 5th and reverse. Appreciate the clear directions, cheers!
Love your videos keep em coming! Wish I seen this 2 weeks ago when I had my trans out....my 5th bushing needs replacing but I had no idea it was this easy!
Yep. Not tooo hard to pull the trans, I think. Bolts are easier to get to because it's such a skinny trans.
Jason, you're mad, man.
Keep it up
I just replaced my selector rod joint brushing replaced hoping to fix my gear lever not returning to neutral and so hard going to gear 5, but it didn’t fix the problem, I will need this done, but this is next level for a diy! Thanks for showing us though! Amazing knowledge you have! Wish someone knew what they are doing where i am
Just did this yesterday in the ZF I have for my e36 manual swap. Also changed the foam bushing in the shifter linkage (Available from Racing German). My old one was just dirty powder.. Boy was it not fun getting those bushings out of 1st and reverse!. The reverse stated going further into the hole - PANIC MODE ON!!! - luckily I was able to use the bearing puller to get hold of it and pull it out. To put the caps on I followed the method on FCP's video - Was very easy. Pushed the caps on as far as possible with the tool - then placed the circlip in to the hole but not seated then gave it a big hit with the tool - seated perfectly first time.
Also replaced by shift seal, output shaft seal, and changed the shift fork pivot from plastic to a metal at the same time.
Did a bench test with the linkage abd gear leaver connected before and after swaps - boy what a difference - really hard to get into gear before - smoth as silk after.
Other good videos I found were from "Racing German" and fcp euro.
Great explained!Good video!
The new pins are correct. There was a revision on the 5th gear pin, ergo the curved bevel and smaller hole.
I wish the bolts here in the uk came out like the sunny Cali cars!! Had 2 shear off today taking my transmission out!
doh, that blows
In my case the problem was only with cold oil. After the Oil warmed up, it worked.
At every traffic light i hit the shifter often to the right, and after doing that some days, it now works at all temperatures.
So you should try that before taking everything apart.
I have a 2001 325i e46 and its difficult getting into 5th gear. I wonder if the bushing/pin needs changing and if its the older gatrag gearbox? Where can I get the pins for it? Thanksss great vids
Thanks for the video and congratulations. I have a problem with may BMW e36 Getrag. It is hard to enter first gear. That means most of the times after shifting the first gear, when I release the clutch, I hear a grinding noise and pressure on the gear shift. But when I shift the gear quickly and thoroughly it works very nicely. Can you please help me to solve this.
Thanks For your awsome video IT helped me a lot 👍👍
Hi, I have the pins also changed for reverse gear and 5 gear and now when I put in reverse gear I have this again (lock) no longer and I lightly put in the reverse. can it be something on the Shift (Bushing)?
(google translate from german)
Will this kit also work with the xi 5 spd? is seems like the same base 5sp transmission is used and the "xi" transfer case is added on. Thanks
Hi 50skid,
I am looking to complete this job in the next month and wished to start collecting tools. I see the last link for the Harbor Freight 14 piece slide hammer set is no longer available, ebay has fallen short as well. Is there another recommended set or a separate adapter for sale to use for the wood screw?
Thank you for your assistance
Working on one right now. Low mileage vehicle. Both pins are the same. I'm going to guess that's right since you, myself and a couple other videos show it the the same pins.
Thanks for great video! I am following how your manual swap is going.
There is also different way to fix this, maybe not so recommended. Car has been fine 4 years after fix.
Caps off, pistons off and little bit wet/dry sandpaper for slide bearings. Check that pistons are moving easy. Little bit of grease, and caps back with gasket sealant glue.
Why we did it like this? Because it was really difficult get those special tools to remove old slide bearings from gearbox.
They are $30 on Amazon now! And the bushing kit is $5 each.
Yep.. when we did that fix it was really difficult to get tools..
This method is looking more appealing in 2022. Check the prices on the 5th gear shift pin and drift tools. The entire repair kit now goes for close to $300.
@@shadypizzle ive calculated 110 eur for everything oem. the fucking 5th shift pin itself is 60 eur alone. can i bitch about the shifter levers? new one for 118 eur. all of them are expensive. stock oem, m3 one, z3(i think it was z3), 545 too. all of them go for 110+eur now. it just hurts to read, that people were buying them for like 50. fucking inflation and fucking bmw being smartass with their prices..
Would you be willing to rent out the tools to insert the bushings?
I wonder if that transmission is same as one that goes into Z3 M with S52 motor. My transmission has this symptom which gets hard to go in gear when transmission is hot. especially 1st 2nd and Reverse. I always suspected the shift pin get stuck. Once again your video will start my next diy. Thanks man
What are the last 7 digits of your VIN?
Wondering if this repair will fix my transmission. I can drive around town - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears - no issues. Then I pop unto the freeway and use 5th gear - after that it will shift from 2nd to 5th and not 3rd. I usually have to fiddle around to find 3rd gear (I can find it easily because I'm used to it). It's like the pin is stuck, but after awhile it's back in place because I can feel a little pressure to push it into 5th gear again. If this repair will fix that issue, I will plan to drop the transmission out this spring and go at it. Thanks for any input. I love your videos - lots of knowledge there. Keep it up.
It definitely is, i've had the same exactly the same problem as you are describing, this will definitely fix it!
The caps get brittle after a while..my caps leaked oiled..worth replacing.
Hi Jason, Great Video as usual , but you just rebuild your auto trans what led to the swap? Curious, also will you be selling the the one you took out?
It's something to do for the channel and I'm going to be keeping it to maybe switch back one day. Thanks for watching!
how many miles in the transmission?
so my ZF 5mt is stuck in gear, would this be an issue ? Shift pin being stuck or out of place ??
Anyone knows which SMG pins for E63 pins 6 speed gearbox GS6S53BZ. ??
Hey 50's Kid, Is the older e46 Getrag and newer ZF a direct swap?
Regarding shift pin repair part numbers: Are do both above trannys take same parts?
Cheers!
No getrag are different as far as the pins and bushings. I do believe it was shorter and thus required an even longer drive shaft. Checkout realoem to see for sure. It has drive shaft lengths.
That is the exact name of the expanding tool for pulling the pins(attaches to the slide hammer)
Damn, I can't find a video where the bushings don't fold super easily. My bushing is just crumbling and wont fold so I can't grab it out. Some of these shavings are creeping into the trans itself too. I've been at it for a few hours with no progress.
is the repair same for when the gear lever is tilted towards 5th gear not like between 3rd and 4th when in neutral? I have 528i with 5spd manual box and the gear lever is not where it's supposed to be in neutral position, also 3rd gear seems like it's not in a right place, more like slightly moved towards 5th
+Anti Rästa sounds like your linkage is bent or something
based on the info I got from previous owners the car has been thrashed hard. how strong are the internals? asking this because the second and third gear seem to have worn synchros based on the occasional grinding sound when changing gears. is the box worth fully repairing or should I just source a good one 2nd hand?
anybody got the 5th gear pin part number?
Parts list
Where to find shift pin bushings for 6 speed gearbox?
no one helped me, thanks so grate people don't care about no one
Do e46 m3 use this pins
it depends if you have the S6S420G or the ZF but I don't know the actual difference
Hello and thank you for your video
I do not understand why the 6th pin
The one next to the two large pins that you replaced is not replaced also oem reference 23311224823
Did you no what?
The pine is sold on the web alone without the socket...
Why are you swapping to manual ?
Whys your nose so shiny.
