  • An overview of the input shaft bearing replacement I just completed on a bmw 5 series v8 zf transmission. I am located in the Okanagan only minutes away from Area 27 race track. Technical engine and transmission work on German cars is my specialty!

This is great! I have not started a project to tear one of these down. I have been thinking about it. This is one more view of it. In my mind I had thot it opposite that the non bellhousing side stays in tact, mostly. Either way this is more information. Last I checked synchros can still be bought and that is my goal.

Thanks for the video. I'm still in the planning phase of my ZF310 (almost identical to ZF320) teardown, due to a whining input shaft bearing that rumbles under loaded acceleration.
    My questions to you are:
    1. What method did you use to clearance the input shaft bearing for an easier time when pressing it onto the shaft? And, how did you know when enough material had been taken off?
    2. When reassembling the transmission, did you press together the case halves by simply compressing them together by evently tightening down the case bolts?
    - I fear that this method would place an unwanted axial load on the input and output shaft bearings. How did you deal with this problem?
I may have a few more questions along the way, so please bear with me.
Any tips and responses will be greatly appreciated!

I used a die grinder and sanding drum to clearance the bearing and it was done without any measurements. I built a jig to help pull the case halves apart and put them back together. I did not use the case bolts, I forced it together with elbow grease and my air hammer on the shaft. With the extra clearance, the impacts from the air hammer allow it to go back together. Good luck holding everything in place, it took me many tries !

@@ukkomies100 if you clearanced the bearing like I did then it's easy to take it apart and double check everything.
