Ahhhhhh.... I just finished my annual Christmas morning tradition of listening to the Messiah (before my kids wake up), getting goosebumps, and sobbing my eyes out at the pure beauty of it all. This year I chose THIS version. It did not disappoint. WOW. The symphony, the choir, and the soloists are superb. I'm still wiping the tears from my face and blowing my nose. Oh, look, the sun is coming up! Merry Christmas, UA-camrs!

My father listened to this every christmas eve. Straight from a backwoods farm he went to boarding school and eventually became a teacher. He loved all poetry, music, art and literature, and sought it relentlessly during his simple life. It's 2 Christmas since he's gone, but I've taken on the tradition. Thanks for allowing me to hear this, through my father's ears.

One snow-filled blizzard night back in 1962 I got my hands on a transitor radio and heard the Messiah for the first time. As a child I was transfixed, transformed and enthralled by the celestial melodies that drew me into the Heavenly realms. To this day I am moved to tears of praise and adoration for our matchless Savior and the boundless grace of our loving Heavenly Father with this timeless oratorio.
As to this performance by the Syndey Opera House it is flawless. What a huge choir! And the soloists are so effortless in their deliveries. Many thanks to them for the countless hours they have put in to mastering their craft. The passion of the countertenor and bass singer, can't put a price on that. I think if I had been there I would have surely fallen out. HALLELUJAH & MARANATHA LORD JESUS!

Honestly, the tenor's technique and consistency of tone, line and voice was impeccable. The other male soloists can't compare. The ' in and out' of vibrato, tension of jaw, and diphongs seen and heard are not, in my opinion the habits of finished soloists.

I have sung this every year of my adult life. When my mother died, she had requested that the Hallelujah Chorus be the last song played at her grave as she was lowered in the ground to "sing me into heaven". I did as she asked and it was a special gift of honor to do so. Just me and her after all left and God and the Angels singing with us. I hope some day I will have the same done for me. At 62 yrs old, it even more important. This performance was just as the score shows and the timing on this choir to slow down and then to pack a punch is so spectacular. Thank you so very much for making my Christmas as I can now only sing in my heart as age and illness has taken my voice to sing, but Jesus is always the same and I can listen to your singing and playing and sing in my heart. Merry Christmas!

Choral works are tough to perform. You need a great conductor, chorus and wonderful soloists. This performance from Sydney, Australia at their legendary opera house met all of those demands. The performance had tremendous passion and energy. And the camera work was exceptional. The chorus was exceptionally large and their performance was magnificent. This is one of the best UA-cam videos in their enormous catalog. If you love classical music, don't miss this one.

Wonderful performance, made even more enjoyable by being able to see - and hear - my granddaughter singing in the choir, because I am unable to be in Sydney for the performance.

Season's Greetings from Dublin! What a wonderful performance! As an alto who has sung in the chorus for manhy performances of Handl's Messiah, I was a bit disappointed that a counter tenor sang the solos that are often performed by an alto. We altos don't often get the chance to shine and I always look forward to singing along with the altos when listening to The Messiah in particular.

Humanity, here and in a myriad of ways, expresses the glory of God our Maker and Redeemer. This God who took it upon Himself (on a cross) to establish our right and power to exist with Him in Christ forever: "Who ever lives and believes in me shall never die!" Merry Christmas

Exceptionally wonderful rendition!! The human voice is such an instrument of beauty and peace. I have never seen/heard the contralto section done by a male before....what a fantastic vocal range !! The orchestra and choir superb!! I feel honored to have listened in. Absolutely beautiful!!

The brief tempo change at 1:57:09 during Hallelujah really punctuated "King of Kings and Lord of Lords", as if Hallelujah needed any additional punctuation, but I really liked that, and I don't think I had ever heard a rendition that did that. Bravo!

1:45:55 600 choristers! Amazing! Counter-tenor sublime. Having trouble finding credits, but casting is superb. Frantically searching for pink-haired lady, but my eyes aren’t up to it. Bravi!

My all time favorite piece. Sang it several times in my youth. Beautiful balance between choir and orchestra. I do not see the reason of using a countertenor. I much prefer ladies for these parts. That said, this young man did a magnificent job. Countertenors truly have a great gift and are very scarce. I have always been saddened that, back in the time Handel wrote, the barbaric practice of "creating" (for want of a better word) castrati was, very, common. Just a very nice performance. The enunciation was wonderful. And to perform the piece without using a score, WOW! This will be a yearly view for me as long as it remains available. Thanks so much for sharing. Choir dynamics superb. The camera work made me believe I was there!!

Actually, I think all the countertenors are singing in power metal bands.
