I would love to know more about how you take care of your voice! It amazes me that you do this videos, plus long lives while on tour and you still sound amazing!! I’ve sang my whole life but since getting into rock n roll singing my voice gets so tired so quickly😭
The way you describe music is brilliant. Weather you're describing music from a musicians point of view or a fan of music point of view I UNDERSTAND IT, LEARN FROM IT & LAUGH ABOUT IT !
Hi Justin, we do a cover of “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” and people LOVE IT when we play it! The falsetto thing is right: I, for example, only use some kind of falsetto when singing certain lines (the first two occurrences of “god, you're touching me”, also “just listen to the rhythm of my heart” and “we'll be rocking till the sun goes down”) to make them a bit softer, but for the rest of the song, even the higher screams like the one at the end, is just head voice. You, and especially that song, made me really up my register game. You're a beast, man. Cheers and Metal! 🤘😎

I love how every intro, the song, is very, very slightly different. The world moves and grows, it mutates and survives. The amp with glass and transformers makes the best noise. , .....And reverb.
I totally agree with you on the feeling about standing in front of a loud amp, Justin. There's just something about it.......the soundwaves just sort of pulsating and the air that an amp is pushing. Especially when hitting the strings. There's almost something kind of child-like about it, like when we are very young and realizing that we have some sort of effect on the world. Lead playing is especially like this.....it's like communicating a different language, but louder, and it's interesting how it just becomes more exciting the louder that it gets.

Regarding the hair, I saw you guys again in November last year and your hair length and style suited you perfectly then! You suit the mane a lot more than the 'I'm just a guy' trim, don't turn back!
You have a fantastic range Justin and I am envious of it and of your fearlessness to stand on a stage and show it off. It's an amazing thing. Any thoughts on Axl Rose's vocal range? It is said that he has a vocal range of six octaves, from F1 heard in “In There Was a Time“, to B flat 6 while singing “Ain't it Fun“, which is five octaves above it. I thought it was madness but under the right conditions with the right frame of mind arrived at through the right combination of snack choices, you can hear the individual tracks of a song and if you focus your mind in the right way you can hear the backing tracks on some of the songs where he was doing them and the low notes are unbelievably low. The highs we've all heard of course but some of the notes he sings are so low they almost feel like a drone. It's wild. Does anyone have a wider range? Is that a legit measurement? I don't know.
Corey Taylor has 5 and a half octaves, and Mike Patton can do 6. Think Mariah Carey's around there too. But I've always found those kind of measurement incredibly nebulous and, tbh, bullshit. All about what determine a hit note; is it once heard, is it sustainable, etc, etc. Really don't like Axl's high end; prefer hearing him in Patience than I do in songs like You Could Be Mine. For me, one of those bands where I prefer to music to the vocals, like (hot take) The Police.
Best explanation of why valve amps can’t be matched by modellers, cheers! Not just for big gigs or recording either, at home too(with attenuator) , guitars come alive when they are just on the verge of feedback.
Best vocalist ever is Freddie Mercury.... the fact that you sound similar (not the same, similar) makes me really happy. Everytime you sing it makes my brain swim in all those hormones. Love it
I didn't and don't like The Darkness, BUT the voice he uses to sing his intro to these videos make me go "damn, he sounds like Freddie Mercury" every time.
@@Mitch93 I like Roger's singing, too -- his notes in Bohemian Rhapsody are crazy. "I'm in Love with my Car" is one of my favorite Queen songs. But if I just heard the "Justin Hawkins rides again... again" without seeing Justin singing it, I would swear that was Freddie Mercury.
this channel just keeps getting fucking better!!! thank you! pure entertainment with a little education mixed in, couldnt ask for more! oh wait, yes i can... would love to see more of you customs and amps on the channel for sure.
Justin, don’t lose the hair! You’re so handsome with it! The short hair does look great too but I’ll always like the long hair more. Love what you do so much! And THANK YOU these videos are just what I needed❤️❤️ Stay blessed 😊
You’re not too old for long hair and they add such a power and energy on stage! You still look like in LIOAF, and come on, we are still all 20 here, and we know it right? 😅 leave short hair to bloody politicians, it’s not something for rock & roll 😉
Are the Darkeness going to re-release Permission to Land on vinyl? It's nearly 20 years since it's release. It would be great to have on vinyl. Cheers Justin, really enjoying the videos.
The song "Just" by Radiohead uses a chord for all 12 notes. I believe it was a challenge between Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood to see who could write the song with the most chords. Like you said, there's no limit as long as the melody justifies it.
you sound like you use your chest and head voice. which more rock singers need to keep doing. u have an amazing voice! freddie had a similar situation also plant. i totally agree it's definitely not a true falsetto.
I'm currently watching this particular video, but I'm popping in to say, I'm a huge fan of your voice in all its splendor. I've honestly been blown away recently by your softer tones on So Long. Your vocals are so gorgeous on that. I genuinely adore all you do, but I love it when I hear you try different things like that. I'm officially on board for an album of acoustic rock tunes. Well, I'm on board for anything really. You sing it, i'll listen. Oh and your hair is awesome. I miss my long hair, but it can be hassle. I dug the Mark Knopfler headbead and short hair look. DO IT! Cheers!
Considering "I believe in a thing called love" I think it's funny how the "just listen to the rhythm of my heart" parts ARE in falsetto (I think), but they're followed by HIGHER notes that aren't falsetto.
The softer high parts are definitely falsetto. I think the highest parts are mixed voice though. I can't sing like Justin, but I have a similar range, and if I sing his most pushed parts I use mixed voice. Pure falsetto doesn't have enough power, at least as fair as I'm aware. You can really scream in falsetto, like death metal scream, but to hit the pure notes on the chorus of IBIATCL, I'm sure it's mixed
@@JobForAMaxboy I would have guessed the higher parts in that song are belting, but I'm a novice when it comes to vocal technique. I'm pretty sure I've heard him use mixed voice as well though.
@@Marklar3 belting is more in chest voice. Once you get to the top of your range, assuming you know how to use head voice, youll probably be using pure head voice or a mix with falsetto if you're singing with power
I was front row at the clip you showed in the early part of the video… one of the best live performances (despite the sound issues that you were plagued with…at least from what I can recall) I’ve ever seen. Man I gotta say the more videos I see from you the more I realize you're a hell of a lot more interesting than that leotard I saw you in ages ago. That said you gotta have what it takes to pull the look off too mate. Nice job on becoming a rockstar \m/ and now a very intriguing UA-camr.
Justin bless you! These videos are getting me through a crazy rough time, and always uplift me, make me smile and laugh. 😹 I love your theorizings on proper and poor uses of ‘yeah’s’ and ‘ooohhhs’ and ‘woahs’, etc. I would love to see your take on the song/vid of Usher’s ‘Yeah!’ ft. Ludacris and Lil Jon. The whole song is premised on ‘yeah’s’. Would love to hear your breakdown on this one. 🧐🙏🏼
I really like your look man. I wouldn't change a thing.
Love the math lesson! 🎶😁🤘
You have a beautiful voice.
The darkness best rock n roll band in 20 years
I'm glad the pigeon question got thoroughly cleared up. Thank you kindly.
Your voice is inspiring. I love talent and music that push me to become a better musician and you definitely do.
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins ♡
Such a great channel. I always leave with a smile, Thanks Justin. Ride on!
Justin - Do you deal with tinnitus at all? If so, how do you manage it? I played music for years and once I hit middle age that ringing sound came and has refused to leave. I imagine with your time playing music, you may have some similar experiences.
I love the channel - all the best to you!
For me, one of those bands where I prefer to music to the vocals, like (hot take) The Police.
between the pigeon question and the random looks you were giving, love it all!!
The pigeons calculation made me smile :-). It is a bit pointless though: I don't think pigeons will want to carry a human associated with a hawk.
@@HorologicRannygazoo Freddie never did those high notes, it was Roger.
I know right?! I feel the exact same way 😍
eh, that's an opinion
I luvs a guitar centric JH vid! Ta for the cool insight, love all the amps you mentioned.
The greatest voice of all time and pitch perfect every single performance just as nature intended.
I just love to hear ur voice and how god u are to respond to ALL types of Questions
The Pigeon question 👍
this channel just keeps getting fucking better!!! thank you! pure entertainment with a little education mixed in, couldnt ask for more! oh wait, yes i can... would love to see more of you customs and amps on the channel for sure.
Love the pigeon content. Also do you only review specific bands or types bands or do you review all?
Justin, don’t lose the hair! You’re so handsome with it! The short hair does look great too but I’ll always like the long hair more. Love what you do so much! And THANK YOU these videos are just what I needed❤️❤️ Stay blessed 😊
You’re not too old for long hair and they add such a power and energy on stage! You still look like in LIOAF, and come on, we are still all 20 here, and we know it right? 😅 leave short hair to bloody politicians, it’s not something for rock & roll 😉
Best part of the day!
Are the Darkeness going to re-release Permission to Land on vinyl? It's nearly 20 years since it's release. It would be great to have on vinyl. Cheers Justin, really enjoying the videos.
This is pure gold! I’m really happy I found this.
The song "Just" by Radiohead uses a chord for all 12 notes. I believe it was a challenge between Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood to see who could write the song with the most chords. Like you said, there's no limit as long as the melody justifies it.
This is correct sir!
I dunno, I think your voice is pretty freaking awesome. Keep on keeping on, Justin!
How about having your brother pop in sometime on your show?
Stellar episode 👌 ✨
you sound like you use your chest and head voice. which more rock singers need to keep doing. u have an amazing voice! freddie had a similar situation also plant. i totally agree it's definitely not a true falsetto.
Great voice justin, see you in dublin on the 28th February can't wait.
You look absolutely smashing with long hair, Justin; not that you need to keep it long, mind you.
I recently got a Laney cab so it makes me happy that you back them.
Don’t cut your hair - you look great. I hope you were being sarcastic.
anyone who can grow their hair should!
So glad you made this channel. Thanks =)
Your voice and range is staggering, absolutely love your singing. Do you have a favorite key you prefer to sing in?
The key of awesome.
D minor
@@rangerCG 🤣
@@SilojensenDK its the saddest key
I love your dedication to the Pigeon question!
Interview Rufus and your Bass Player - They don't say shit.
I agree this would be fun. Also have liked the comments about an episode with Dan.
Always enjoy your videos!!
Please don't cut off your hair! Never!
You have the voice of an angel and you never forget it!
I was front row at the clip you showed in the early part of the video… one of the best live performances (despite the sound issues that you were plagued with…at least from what I can recall) I’ve ever seen. Made my Download festival being able to see you guys rocking out in front of a packed audience. Much love.
Great vid again. 👍
Fully agree on the valve amp on stage subject. And also the point of two different amps in the band.
:) I love that you take silly questions seriously! Wonderful!
I saw Meshuggah live and the lack of amps on stage didn't spoil the gig for me. Too busy having my brain melted with all the time signatures. Keep up the excellent channel content Ive only just got round to watching this one :-)
Great content as always
how did I just learn that this channel EXISTED!? Got some catching up to do. I'll be watching... until my heart explodes..
Double rectifier. Brilliant.👌👌
Such an entertaining and informative video today. Loved it.
Shit... I got almost to the end of the video before I remembered to hit the like button. Curse U and Ur captivating self, Mr. Hawkins. Massive love.
I love your sense of humor!
