I saw GNR Sept 2022. I thought he sounded really good. Didn’t try to hit some of the highs, but other than that, voice was very good. And he had great stage presence. I saw GnR in Athens about 10 days ago and they're still going strong absolutely live, no lip syncing or backing tracks. They were amazing. Axl was his lovable self a powerhouse, probably covered miles on the stage and his voice shook the venue, it reverberated deep in my soul. Axl will be up there into his...OUR... 80s
Appetite for Destruction is still one of my favourite albums ever. I can still remember being about ten years old and my older brothers playing me 'Its So Easy' for the first time on a wonky old cassette player. Fucking love it!
Born 77. I heard GNR months before my classmates when my best bud's(RIP) uncle bought AFD because the "cover looks cool" Before Axl finished the opening scream to Welcome I knew this was my favorite band ever. Not one thing had changed since
Axl killed it when he was singing with AC/DC. To be 60 and still being able to hit most of the range is a major accomplishment. You are no slouch Mr. Hawkins, saw some of the footage of you singing from a few recent concerts, you sound great too!
We should also applaud Steven's survival and thriving. Remember there was a time, we (fans of GNR) didn't think he was going to make it in the early 2000s. I still remember first hearing the intro Welcome To The Jungle. My young teen mind 🤯 !
True Adler give them a swagger along with Duff and Izzy phenomenal rhythm section. Pan those stereos to Izzy’s side if you haven’t and listen to everything Stradlin brought to that band. His tone is better than Slash’s alone but the two tones are perfect together.
He's very much influenced by the great James Mangrum (aka Jim Dandy) of Black Oak Arkansas - they all took a little bit from him - David Lee Roth, Axl Rose - nothing wrong with that cause in his heyday Jim Dandy was second to none!!
I was born in 79 so GNR was my first great musical loves. Slash is one of the reasons I play guitar. I’m sorry to say his voice is not the same but God bless him for still rocking and rolling!
How do you explain how he sounds worse after 3-6 months off between legs then? plenty of rest to be had there. He sounds better when he warms up, gets his breathing right and strengthens his vocal muscles... currently they are a bit weak but he's still able to reach pitch and sound passable so he gets by. He does need to get a coach to whip his ass a bit though, I think his current method for preserving his voice is crossing his fingers and hoping it lasts. A good coach could get him back in ring shape and allow him to sing for as many more years he wants to with full power
I saw The Darkness in Nottingham a few years ago. They teased the Sweet Child Intro as a joke but were forced to play it in its entirety by the tenacious audience. Nailed it in effortlessly perfect Darkness fashion.
Axl in his prime was something to behold..I could never see that he would be still be going at 60 due to the way he sings but here we are, that in itself is impressive. A great showman aswell. Look forward to seeing gunners in November
As I turn 64 today, it's good to be reminded that 60 somethings can and will, still rock! Love your videos, Justin! Off to practice my Axl dance moves. I can do them too. 🎸🌹🎶
When you’ve had arguably the best voice is rock, a few percent off his best will show a bit but who cares, it’s Axl f’ing Rose! Him and the rest of G&R are absolute legends and I’d take them at 95% of their best over almost anyone

@@nicholasmeal7446 I've seen them 5 times over the past 35 years and they were great. My daughter went to see them on their reunion tour and said they were amazing.
Izzy wrote the best songs and was the heart of the band. His departure was the death. Steven's drumming was chaotic to match their style, versus Sorum who is a metronome. Izzy was the key to the whole thing.
and GnR haven't released an album of original material since Izzy left. I don't count Chinese Democracy as a GnR album. That's an Axl solo album. Good album with some great songs, but not really GnR.
Izzy and Axl had a couple of decent solo albums with The Juju Hounds and It’s Five o’clock Somewhere just post GnR. There was still another great record they could have made together.
@@JosesAmazingWorlds Slash and Izzy made the solo albums. Not Axl. Izzy is such a great songwriter. Slash not so much I think. A great guitarist of course but he really shines in collaboration with great songwriters like Axl and Izzy.
Saw Axl 2 times in 2016 and 2019 on the Guns N Roses tours. And I have to say this, in the higher register stuff he does get the Mickey Mouse voice going. But it isn’t anywhere near as bad as the UA-cam videos you see where it just sound horrible. With the lower register stuff he still has the amazing power behind his voice and I think the criticism he has been getting the past 4 years is not as warranted to the extent it has been. He has lost power in the higher register but man, when they decide to record a new album that isn’t just never used vocal tracks I think Axl will shine if the songs are in a lower register I really do. Because he is absolutely incredible.
@@dog61 Like this one. I didn't agree with our host on Axl sounding strong, at all. Yeah, he's coming out cold, but he seemed to struggle with getting wind through those mighty pipes. Kinda shocking? I know he's 60, but I'm 55, and many still out there from my youth are still rocking it! Rob Halford is still rocking it with Judas Priest, to my surprise. As well as many others, most who never stopped. If inspired, Axl could do this just as well. Too bad the Original GnR from "Appetite For Destruction" weren't able to "keep the magic" together. Without Izzy, and especially the Original drummer, Steven Adler. He had more of a groove, as well as sounding much more Organic! One of the All Time Great Albums!
I saw Axl with ACDC and we hit all the notes full blast, he had his leg in a cast though. Saw him the with the Guns and the voice wasn't has strong but still good, in the latest show in Lisbon 2022 he had a lot of issues with sound cutouts from the microphone and he cant hold high notes long has 4 years ago. I think Axl needs to realize he cant be always running around the stage and sing at the same time.
@@Hazehellivo it almost makes me wonder if he pushed himself harder with AC/DC because I have not heard a single bad review of the shows he did with them. Which is odd considering he was a fill in singer. It could also be the difference of maybe Guns doesn’t have a good EQ guy but AC/DC does, I donno
I was fortunate enough to see Axl perform with AC/DC and was sceptical (as I imagine many where) because of his antics in the past, would he turn up late? Would he walk off stage early? Would there be any issues. I am happy to say not only was his attitude and behaviour flawless he (and I had already high expectations) exceeded my expectations with his performance. Absolutely NAILED the show!!!
Really enjoyed them in London last Friday, sound wasn't great to start but they improved it and Axl, despite apparently not being overly well, sounded great... them bringing Carrie out for Sweet Child and Paradise City was a great touch, she was excellent too
Saw Guns n Roses on Sunday 5th June in Seville and they were absolutely superb! Axl has.lost a lot of weight and gave a brilliant performance, as did Slash and the rest of the band. Absolutely fantastic night!
Carrie Underwood performed with Guns n Roses again 2 nights in a row in London. The seconded night she sang lead vocals on Paradise City and Sweet Child O Mine. She sounded amazing. Axl said she saved his ass! lol
Axel had Covid on the last date , his voice was blown out , so Carrie helped them out , that night , everybody was coming down with Covid on these London shows .
I saw them twice on the Not In This Lifetime Tour, and I gotta say, I was shocked how good Axl actually sounded - like he'd been working to get his 'voice' back. Songs like Mr. Browstone were just about perfect.
Saw GNR in 2011, 2016 and 2018. Each time they played well over 2 and a half hours and the shows were a musical onslaught. Some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Axl is great, he’s not what he used to be, but he’s still a legend and he’s trying his hardest, his voice isn’t what it once was but after singing some of the notes he did it happens, he still can put on a hell of a show
Justin, I originally posted a rude indictment of Axl’s effort but, after viewing your positive interpretation I am forced to reconsider. It’s Axl Rose and he hit the stage on time and sang live, unadjusted. Bravo.
I was devastated when Axl got announced for Brian’s replacement for Acca but fair fks to him he was truly professional for the entire time and absolutely nailed most of the songs and the ones he didn’t he was giving 110%. Artists who have given soo much to the world deserve the support in their later years IMO, if they wanna crack on performing doing what they love even though they are no longer in the prime, who are we to tell them no. Paul McCartney is about 108 years old but if was being rolled out in a wheelchair bearly able to sing I would still go watch him because he’s given so much musical loveliness over the years.
Axl Rose was a joke performing with AC/DC that was a huge injustice to music it was pretty embarrassing glad I got a refund and didn't attend any of those shows
Seen him yesterday in Prague, got tickets for Munich and Hannover, really still one of the best bands out there.. Played for 3 hours straight without a break and although the start wasnt really smooth the performance was absolutely awesome after some minutes...
I think that's exactly it though. Axl Rose can still sing pretty well when he wants to. But he deliberatley chooses to sing in falsetto and protect his voice. Maybe if they did shorter sets Axl could go all out. I would much prefer a 2 hour set with a good Axl than a 3 hour one with Axl giving half of what he can offer.
@@matthewatwood8641what's that about plant now? He's done amazing music all throughout his solo career. Now he chooses to do Bluegrass with Alison Krauss. So what's your point?
He's killed it over the past 6 years, however, 2016 was very much Axl at the top of his game, fronting two juggernauts and hearing the AC/DC tunes, in standard tuning, with Axl singing with a vintage growl was immense to hear in person. My two pence, GNR's best album is Chinese Democracy and features the greatest vocals Axl has ever recorded. FYI Justin, Guns N' Roses played Walk All Over You last night. Give it a listen!
My first impression when hearing Chinese Democracy was that Axl really worked hard on improving his voice. I think he had extraordinary range before, at least 4 octaves, and I think he managed to increase it. I love that album. The band probably should have been called Axl Rose rather than Guns N' Roses, but don't let that take anything away from how well done it is.
Definitely agree on Chinese Democracy. It's mind-blowing how it's always talked as a total dumpster fire. The album has some of Axl's best work for sure and has a very unique sound to it. There are some misses on the album too that I always skip, but overall it's a great album. To be honest part of me is a bit sad that we never got to hear a follow up. The reunion ofc is amazing too, but at the same time the band has become a bit of a nostalgia act.
I gave the album a listen while setting aside all pre-conceived notions. It’s actually really good. It’s funny to think that I hated it so much before. To be fair, it shouldn’t have been called G’N’R. It is something different that stands on its own merit.
@warrenrose68 In the 90’s his voice was one of the best in the world. Sadly, his voice has deteriorated quite drastically. That is life though. Be grateful for what you have today, you never know when it may be gone.
I’ve just been to see them in London and They were absolutely fantastic. I really don’t know what all this BS is lately about Axl,s voice he’s 60 year old ffs, the blokes a legend. Do people really think he’s gonna look and sound exactly the same as he did in the 90,s. It was a dream come true seeing the greatest rock band in the world. I’m just glad there all still alive and rocking it. So many of the great ones are not with us anymore. Enjoy them when there still here
Amen brother! I wish to see him one last time and I pray they come back and tour the USA again after South America is over. I had the privilege of seeing him back in the day with Metallica in LA. It was an amazing show.
My god man, I just have to say this: I could not possibly care any less about Axl Rose than I currently do, but here I am 14 minutes into this video, and planning on finishing this and several more. You're great! You're the best. Please keep these coming!
He is IMO---MOST talented rock vocalist of all time His ability to project, and switch seamlessly through different registers is just God-given [PLANT prob. Close 2nd]
Not to mention people that dont know Gnr when they hear different songs by Gnr sung by Axl they think its a different singer, ie its so easy vs WTTJ or Mr B vs SCOM Or even patience.
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain do you think Axel is more iconic than Steven Tyler? Personally I think you can even add yourself to that category! Your voice is instantly recognizable. 👍🏼
For me the most amaizing thing about Axl Rose that he's always ALWAYS sing live. Even on tv. I really can't remember the show when he'd just open his mouth with playback above his voice.
It’s fascinating to hear how you describe music and a bands sound. I’m a hobby player and only been in amateur bands. Anyone that can publicly bare their soul is a brave person. People that are negative about artists, should have a go.
i saw them a few years back in Montreal. he was a bit all over the map in the first few songs but he was belting it and nailing it after 3 tracks. he got better as the show went on and they played for 2 and a half hours. incredible
GNR is one of the greatest bands. Axl is a phenomenal human bean. He was hitting notes that a lot of singers could not hit. I use to think there was two people singing and it would be him. Just a phenomenal singer. Regardless of his age he still out there doing it. What a true legend he is. I will always love respect him.
Steven Adler is one of the best drummers...he was overshadowed by Slash back then but Adler was a beast and his fills etc. are still iconic and just epic.
God, I love this guy. I missed out on The Darkness though I was aware. Too involved with my own work to care to my loss. Justin Hawkins is just incredible. Wish I had the pleasure to have crossed paths in the rock journey.
I was on GnR concert yesterday in Stavanger in Norway, and i just can say that it was amazing..Great sounds and performance..Both Axl and Slash are almost samme kevel as they were in 90s..So it was fantastic to se them again..I really enjoyed..Thank you Guns n Roses !!!

I found you on Sam Ryder’s page!!! I was so obsessed with you in your 80’s/90’s !!! I played it on repeat constantly! I am following you now that I know what your name is, lol!
Axls voice has been horrible imo. Seen them three times on never ending reunion tour and 2017 he was great but 2019 and beyond he seemed tired. Will give him credit for not using backing tracks
From 87-90 I was the biggest GNR fan. Even more than Maiden. They were the band I had dreamed of in my head, Aerosmith meets Metallica. '91 saw them become a bloated affair and, seeing them twice in '92, I realized this wasn't the same band I'd known and loved before. My disinterest continued to grow until it couldn't even be measured in a thimble. Purchasing "Chinese Democracy" never even entered my mind. The World's Most Dangerous Band had become The World's Most Boring Band. And I blame it all on Axl and his bloated ego. That being said, "Appetite for Destruction" is still a top ten album.
What ever do you mean? These youtube videos dont do justice to what an actual show sounds like. Unless you have been to a few not sure why you come call it sad. These are people uploading videos with their phone from varying angles and at usually shit quality. Sure he doesnt aound like he did when he was 20 but they sound very good live
I saw Guns n' Roses a couple of years ago on their Not In This Lifetime tour - BLOWN AWAY. Including Axl's vocals. Unless something drastic has happened since then, there's no reason AT ALL to pack it in, he was frigging amazing.
And his vocal coach was Ron Anderson, who recently passed away and who taught half of the successful singers out there, including Myles Kennedy! I had a lesson with him and he was amazing and spoke fondly of Axel.
Great video as always. I’m developing a real appreciation of you, I’ve also delved deeper into the Darkness back catalogue. Very very impressed. Keep keeping on dude.
The ACDC show with him was incredible. He was on top form! I feel he doesn't push it too much these days with Gn'R so he doesn't wreck his voice on tour.
If you read old interviews with them you will find when many of these songs were recorded Axl made comments about how it was so much different and harder to perform some live. Many think AC/DC would be harder but because of the various ranges Axl uses and often times in the same song it's much harder vocally to embody that over and over for 3 hours nightly. I dont think it's fair to say he gave all for AC/DC but doesnt for GnR. Plus I have seen them live it sounds nothing and I mean nothing like these youtube videos at all. Even the small bit I recorded I was surprised how different it sounded to what was really happening. I'm not saying that AC/DC isnt hard to sing cause it is but it's still understanding the areas of confortability one can take his voice consistently for long term.
Saw him yesterday in Dublin, he was absolutely brilliant, I thought he was gonna sound like he did back in Brazil but noooo dude, he was and always will be GREAT! ❤️
@@maniacrecords6220 I guess it's age and health issues, they canceled Glasgow due to illness conditions and I guess it was him who was sick, he kept his hand over his chest when he wanted to sing a high note!
Saw GNR back in october 2022, it was a great show, the band was spot on and AXL's voice while changed, was still distinctive. But the thing that I appreciated more about the show was how much he has grown as an artist, he bowed to the audience when they sang the choruses, he arrived on time, he was a showman that displayed respect for the audience. Let me tell you, that didn't happen in 1992.
I've recently discovered your channel and I'm already hooked. You have a swagger and casual intelligence regarding all things music that I'm just absolutely enthralled with. I concede that I'm late to the game here Mr. Hawkins, but you're an utter gem of a man. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

Man at his peak, his vocal range was unbelievable, something like F1 to Bb6 depending who you believe. Either way, it was gargantuan. Edit: 3:45 Oh come on Justin, you could hear that was the original key. You're just messing with us. Edit 2: 8:38 I'd be disappointed he didn't come out in the plaid kilt. Edit 3 11:29 I couldn't help but notice the Habs jersey and I'd say it's almost like coming off the bench to replace an injured goalie to face a penalty shot. Kinda.
Axl is a vocal mystery really. When he reappeared in 2001, he sounded like a different person. His voice wasn't deep or powerful, but sounded thin and high pitched. And he never had the classic Axl-voice after the early 90s. He did sing great sometime in 2006-07 and 2010, when he had the power and rasp. These days he's changed his technique or has had some kind of vocal injury or surgery. Odd thing is if you listen to the song 'Hard School' live, it's like he has no voice in that range. In the studio years ago he sang it normally, now he has to go into head voice/falsetto to sing it. For a professional singer it's strange
yep. we don't what happened for real with his voice, was it injury, surgery or sth else? I wish we could hear from him what happened, because it's very sad when you read wave of criticism. I'm not a musician, I don't know much about voice emission and I count all the time that someone will explain what happened to Axl with voice some day ...
Axl never really sounded that great live. It's the energy he puts out in a live show. Listening to him live on you tube is not the same as being at a show
I think you should do a video on the changing physiology of the voice box as you age. There is a theme on social media about older singers that sound terrible in comparison to their younger self. And I think it’s poorly understood by fans as to why they can’t sing like they did. Do it!

He is one Of the greatest Rock vocalista ever. We should be grateful Of having him performing nowadays. He really tries his best.
He's very much influenced by the great James Mangrum (aka Jim Dandy) of Black Oak Arkansas - they all took a little bit from him - David Lee Roth, Axl Rose - nothing wrong with that cause in his heyday Jim Dandy was second to none!!

You doing the spitting coffee out gag had me cacking up. Nice.
I was born in 79 so GNR was my first great musical loves. Slash is one of the reasons I play guitar. I’m sorry to say his voice is not the same but God bless him for still rocking and rolling!
If Axl has time to rest his voice, he’s still capable of absolutely killing it
How do you explain how he sounds worse after 3-6 months off between legs then? plenty of rest to be had there.
Is there a video of it by any chance ?

Best city I’m not biased I promise

Amen

Agreed
All too often the YT videos are the worst performances mainly to get views and likes.

What’s he doing with the jacket? Camille Vasquez?
I saw them twice on the Not In This Lifetime Tour, and I gotta say, I was shocked how good Axl actually sounded - like he'd been working to get his 'voice' back. Songs like Mr. Browstone were just about perfect.
Saw GNR in 2011, 2016 and 2018. Each time they played well over 2 and a half hours and the shows were a musical onslaught. Some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Axl is great, he’s not what he used to be, but he’s still a legend and he’s trying his hardest, his voice isn’t what it once was but after singing some of the notes he did it happens, he still can put on a hell of a show
Loved this. Axl is true legend. Love your appreciation of this performance.
Justin, I originally posted a rude indictment of Axl’s effort but, after viewing your positive interpretation I am forced to reconsider. It’s Axl Rose and he hit the stage on time and sang live, unadjusted. Bravo.
I'd love to see Hawkins look back at some of his old music and analyse it how he does with others - would be interesting to see what he says!
Look, Jon, he was just having a little fun. I'm sure Bon Jovi is still an excellent show

nice that you mentioned his acdc work. also found it very matching!
I think you were very generous to Axl here.
Axl Rose was a joke performing with AC/DC that was a huge injustice to music it was pretty embarrassing glad I got a refund and didn't attend any of those shows
@@dye5915 Nice troll job. He did them back better than current Brian Johnson.
Singers have to warm up. Those who don't end up like Robert Plant.

You convinced me. I am going to give Chinese Democracy another listen.
Gee it's not rocket science, his voice is not the same

Axl is truly a legend. He lives and breathes Rock and Roll, he needs to keep singing.
It's sad. You watch him in their early days and he is fantastic. Their early concert at the Marquee Club was brilliant. Age hits us all.

Love the 80's English alternative(ish) guitars in the intro and verses before the C clamp on the nuts vocals kick in on the chorus.
If you go on tour at 60 y.o. without practice exercise or recovery your voice people payied ticket could think you have no respect.
Just like Lars Ulrich fails
Wow. Cry a river.
He sounds way out of range. Probably not even the same guy

Do it!
I agree!
Maybe so, but these poor attempts at revisiting Their old standards as opposed to adapting and writing new music to suit his vocal is just pitiful.
Yes he should. Voice is still amazingly durable, but the GNR set list has always incredibly difficult. It’s time.
