Greg is a living, breathing encyclopedia of guitar chords, perfect technique and style. The guy could make an elastic band on a broomstick sound incredible.
First time I hear the cameraman laughing... I, on the other hand, was crying 'cause I don't even understand what he's playing... but it sounds soooo good!
Oh man, he cracked me up-funny dude. AND I so like that he mentioned the 22 frets thing because yes, if you're in the key of B,...(as I tried to explain to some guy who was almost incredulous that I didn't like Strats with 21 frets for that very reason) Thank you Greg! What insane chops he has and it's a non-stop comedy show as well.
This is absolutely under my Top 5 Rig Rundowns! *Bollinger&Koch* is unbeatable. Besides a great player Koch is a fantastic story telling machine. He's one of the peoples i really would like to meet in person.
Last time I seen Greg he was crossing the street in Wauwatosa. I tooted my horn and waved but he oblivious to his surroundings. Greg had a smile I've seen before, he had coffee. The first time I seen Greg play was in a little bar on Donges Bay Rd in Mequon. A bad date dragged me to see him and I had no idea who he was but I loved the tone he was playing. The funny thing about life is that you never know how short it really is. Almost two years ago I was diognost with cancer and I remember that day like it was yesterday. On the way home from the doctors I decided at the last minute to stop at Cream City. When I say last minute I mean, hold your coffee I'm gonna turn real quick. I figured, life truly is too short. Sometimes you just need to slow down and smell the new guitars. Greg just happen to be there that day and I had a chance to shake his hand and thank him for what he does. Being a former New Yorker I love his accent and his guitar playing speaks for itself.
This is the most... "normal" I've ever seen/heard Greg. He must've taken his Gristle Meds. ;) This was more of a conversation, less of a rundown. Love it! Top notch!
Greg is hilarious and John can keep up with him! They let each other just be natural, and in doing so, there is a whale of a lot of information in there! One of the best rig rundowns you folks have done so far!!
It's funny how much players obsess over vintage gear being superior and then you see a player like Greg using modern equipment that corrects all the shortcomings of older designs.
I learned this in 2008. Had a popular college band. Got a Blues Jr., built a nice pedalboard, and my two guitars $350 Ibanez RG/$1k Nashville Tele. Great, except it was constant noise control. 2009 came and dropped the pedalboard for a Boss ME-70, mic’d the Blues Jr, and the Ibanez became #1. Bland pickups at home, sounded crystal clear in a bar with no hum. *That Nashville is still one of my favorite recording guitars but I gig with a noiseless Ultra Tele.
if you really look into this further, it’s not even really about the gear but the volume level. people who listen to rock and blues rock aren’t trying to listen to music at ear bleed volumes because they are in the later part of their lives and realize you don’t need volume to listen intently. all the “drawbacks” of older equipment are actually superior in live settings without a PA, because they didn’t have huge FOH systems back then. As IFD’s and stage volume became a paradigm the equipment has followed that. It’s just old music vs new performance technique, not about quality. look at kids today, their music has to be at earbleed volume and they need other people all on MDMA to really enjoy it. we as guitarists aren’t as technical as we think, we all kind of just sound like ourselves in the end…
@@petermoss208 - Good points. Hendrix needed 3 100W Plexi full stacks because in those days PA systems couldn't handle guitar. He had to fill out Royal Albert Hall with stage volume.
These two were made to connect on camera! Greg is without a doubt, my favorite soul and personality in the entire music world! Ole’ Greg got John right out of his shell. Loved it! Oh and the gear and tone🙌💪🚀
There is no one, no one, like Greg Koch, his command of technique and tone is absolutely second to none and he is able to infuse his playing with his own sense of humour, the man is a genius!
This is what happens when someone who has practical knowledge gets listened to. This rig sounds so good, is versatile, and pretty light with little to carry. Expensive but great value for a pro rig. Rick Vito’s guitar is a beauty too
Great Stuff , Premier Guitar John always does the Best Interviews, I’ve found that the other two that do the rig rundowns just don’t come across And ask the right questions. Great rig rundown
Greg you're one of those funky, jazzy, bluesy kinda' Rock-a-billy guitarists that just blows my mind. Love it! You are definitely unique in a medium that it is so difficult to be original!
@@bmorebob6624 I don't know about Mayer and Koch but John Cruz was the numero uno master builder at the Fender Custom Shop was sacked by the Fender PC Police..I believe Mayer endorses PRS guitars now and Koch still endorses Fender CS and other guitars through Wildwood Guitars..
This is the best rig rundown I have watched - and the formula is simple: cool people talking honestly about stuff we're interested in. Lots of humor and insights as well.
I began to be intrigued by Greg (can I call him Greg?!) around 2011/12 and was looking for a particular guitar review, and, of course, I bumped into his incredible capabilities on a 'Wildwood 10" video featuring ten different Fender Custom Shop guitars, as spec'd by Wildwood Guitars in Louisville, Colorado. I'm from the southwestern part of the state but had visited Wildwood a few times while on various trips to the Denver area. Incredible shop! I quickly found myself watching all sorts of Fender and Gibson reviews piloted by Mr. Koch, and it wasn't long before I started to think that he was singularly the best guitarist I'd ever encountered. And in the last twelve years, he's only gotten better. He plays on a level which I just can't understand, entwining numerous musical genres into the same video, completely seamlessly. To this day, I remain an absolutely huge fan and still believe him to be the best guitarist/musician on the planet! I hear that he's just as good a human being as he is fingerboard tactician. I can easily believe it!
Because Fender suffers from the same problem that many corporations suffer from. They hire college educated kids that think they are smart because they received too many participation awards.
For many years I've seen the kid fresh out of college that wants to make a name for himself. The kid finds a way to save a few bucks and the higher ups love him because profits are up. Sadly, the higher ups haven't a clue about the product and the kid thinks he has a clue. Eventually, the company starts to suffer because quality took a back seat. By the time someone in the company figures things out the short lived rise in profits is gone. To fix things, Johnny Neutron either gets canned or has moved on for greener pastures. Meanwhile, the company is left holding the bag and has to deal with the damaged reputation.
Interesting time to be a guitar fan. I remember Greg as a lanky, long-haired guy working at Uncle Bob's music in West Allis, WI giving lessons. I took a few. He was always great and always hilarious. And now he's a youtube star with his own equipment line. Awesome, he deserves it! We live in a prefab music era. Guitar gods would be a thing of the past if it weren't for youtube guitar culture. The Pedal Show guys, Anderton's, Koch, Josh Smith, Andy, etc are like old friends now. Carrying an old and flickering torch.
What a f#%*ing character. And so pragmatic about gear, and perfecting simplicity while simplifying perfection= that guitar and that amp. Awesome outcomes. Sounds fantastic.
You might think there wouldn’t be much to a rig rundown with the Tele straight into an amp guy, but you’d be wrong! Who needs a pedalboard with you’ve got the incredible Mr. Koch and his eponymous two-panel amp? I could listen to him talk all day but his playing is really unparalleled.

I've seen him twice now and both have been the most delightful guitar-centric shows I've ever seen. Great player, great guy.
John +Greg, hands down one of the best episodes ever!
There is not a single thing in this video that is not extremely positive! Awesome, cheers!

Two of my favourite guitarists in one video. Greg is such a nice guy. John is a great guy too, it was a pleasure meeting him in Nashville last year. 👍
I haven't played a Reverend that wasn't perfectly finished and didn't play great. They are as good as any manufacturer IMO. Greg's is beautiful.

Greg Koch is a superb guitarist and an excellent salesman. But I must admit these guitar tones are the the best I've ever heard on Ytube.
Greg is redunkulous! Always makes me smile and a lot jealous!
Stellar rundown!! Greg’s personality is the best!! Great interview John!!
Gets my vote for the best PG artist interview. That great, and hilarious.

Just look at the smile on bolinger's face while Greg is playing. Priceless.
Best guitar tone I have ever heard. I am blown away. Greg's playing and that amplifier are a match made in..... Thanks for the best rig run down ever.
His tone drives me nuts, I he had a modeling pedal!!!!!
There are lots of words about what an awesome player Greg is. Hanging out with him at Wildwood was both a hoot and a holler!
I hope John stuck around and sat-in on a few songs during the gig. Love to hear you two jam.
You could gauge this just alone from John's armpits sweating, even with the volume turned off. Amazing.
John and greg. What could go wrong? I love these two human beings
What a legend. It's like Greg Koch and Devin Townsend were cut from the same cloth!
Proud to call Greg a local hero.....AND,It's nice to see someone that knows about gear for a change.
Always admired his playing. Wow. My favourite episode of Big Rundown yet. What a super person Gregg is and now I’m even a bigger fan
I love the gristletone pickups in my Tele! Thanks Premier Guitar for sharing this! And it's Sonic Blue!!!! not powder blue. HA!

Premier Guitar John always does the Best
Interviews, I’ve found that the other two that do the rig rundowns just don’t come across

Just once I would like John to mildly disagree on anything with the player. He can be annoyingly agreeable.
Those guitars are soooooo cool. Well, done Greg and Reverend.👏🏻
1:15 harmonic tuning without missing a beat. JB cracks up
I could listen to The Greg for hours! Please make this interview a recurring thing. 🙂
Love that “question “ in the middle of that musical diatribe..!!👍🏼❤️
A great ambassador..always a pleasure.
Greg Koch is amazing. Video helped me really appreciate John Bolinger. He's a true fan of music and a real pro
Greg: "The Internet blah, blah, blah..tone woods..."
The Internet: "WE LOVE YOU GREG!!!"

Love the Greg & John comedy show.. Also a great guitar and a cool amp.. 🎸
Man i love this mans jazzy blues guitar playing so cool
finaly JB talk to someone without looking down
@Carlos because the guy is too tall
@Carlos me too
THE Rundown I have been waiting for! JB + Greg = Gristle-icious.

I got to see Greg playing in Sydney a few times when he was working with the Fender at their promotion shows. Awesome player, very funny and tall.
That retune at 1:15... smooth
But that guitar and amp combo is killer. Can't beat the harmonic tremolo.
Greg is one of my favorites. He should be a household name. He is in my house at least.

John, you're awesome! I saw Greg do a Fender 'gig', man, what a night!!!!
The skronk und schtank are strong in this one! Wundebar!!!
I'm pretty sure a 5 minute conversation with Greg would cure my depression.
I used to get to watch him play for free in a little club in Green Bay! Miss those days
Greg Koch is so underrated.... damn
So glad this wasn't 10 min. Love GK.... God he's soooooo good.
And 13 people at this point gave a thumbs down? Odd.
13 tonewood deniers
I saw DeVotchKa in that same club back in February. Great venue! And Greg's rig is fun to see!

What a great Rig Rundown, all on point. John was all over that, familiar territory and tone.
Great stuff, thanks JB and the Gristlemeister.

I'd settle for Kreg Goch!!
"Koch in your rig?" Sounds painful.

Smashing your guitar outside where your neighbors can see you is really dramatic and childish.......that's why I chose bonfire.
