- Steve Wariner’s crazy musical odyssey is filled with characters with names like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Reggie Young, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Mark O'Connor and many others that are either titans or demigods of the music world. In our Truetone Lounge interview, Steve discusses all of the musical giants above, while also taking us from his early years in Indiana, all the way to commercial and artistic success all over the world. Along the way, we cover his mentorship by Chet Atkins, and the struggles he faced to have the opportunity to play on his own albums under the then current “Nashville” studio system. Wariner then takes a moment to give credit to the great Reggie Young, who played additional guitar parts on many of his albums through the years, and how he was greatly influenced by both his playing and tone. He then breaks down the intro and guitar solo to his hit single “Lynda,” showing us how he came up with the solo, and how it works over the song's chord changes. Steve then talks gear, focusing on his Glaser built Strat, red Glaser Bender guitar, 1954 Telecaster, and some of his favorite effects and amplifiers.
Steve is VERY UNDERRATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Picker
From one tele picker to another: Steve Noel, you are awesome brother. Nice guy too!
A guitar player that can give an interview without constantly playing-a rarity.
What a GREAT interview with a very humble but very talented man, Zac! Also, like someone else below mentioned, I would also love to see you do a TrueTone Lounge interview with the legendary (& newest member of the CMHOF) Marty Stuart! I've been a big fan of his for years and actually learned about Clarence White through Marty's ownership and use of Clarence's '54 Telecaster with the original B-bender.
What a great guy. Great player whom I think never got enough credit for all he has done for Country music.
Amen

Very generous and giving interview by Wariner. Zach is the best interviewer bar none. I used to see shows at the Crazy Horse since I lived nearby in Tustin. I grew up near the Fender factory in Fullerton. Rickenbacker was based in Santa Ana. Quite a scene in Orange County and Los Angeles. Wariner continues the heritage.
Excellent Excellent interview Zach.
Steve is so down to earth and humble.
You can’t help but smile through out this video.
Wow, what a nice guy. Very down to earth!
Had an opportunity to see Steve's brother Terry Wariner live about 10 Or 15 years ago. MONSTER player and singer as well. Steve's dad got up and did "Rose Colored Glasses" and brought the house down! Steve is right his dad was an amazing singer and was probably 70+ years old then. It was really something special as Terry brought him up because he hadn't played onstage with him in years he said. Terry and his dad were both just as nice as Steve and stayed to talk and signed autographs to every fan that asked. Such a talented family of great human beings. Sorry to hear his dad has passed away.
David, thank you for watching and sharing your experience with the Wariner family. They are a great group of people, we were honored to get the chance to speak with Steve. Zac
I live in Steve's hometown in ky.. I've always been a Steve Wariner fan.... Im friends with Terry, we use to drive old back roads and listen to music and drink cold beer.. this was the 80s ... Still see Terry in town every once in a while.. a great guy!!! One more thing. My moms cousin from Indiana is married to One of Steve's Teachers in Noblesville In. Mr.Hypes...he still remembers Steve and Terry from when they were in school...
Wonderful interview and fine example of a Hoosier, makes me proud to be Hoosier! Thank you.
R.I.P Reggie you will be missed...…...
Steve is a legend. Thanks Zac , I really appreciate these truetone episodes. It's my favorite thing on UA-cam. It's great to have these interviews documented on video. They're all full of Priceless stories and information.
This is great. I love how honest Steve Wairner is, and I LOVE his song SAILS. I live in Indianapolis and have many relatives who live in Noblesville and no doubt Steve knows some of them and vice versa.
I played Chet Atkins style for years and met Chet Atkins twice. This video is amazing because Steve went that extra mile and made it where I was too humble. Chet let me go on stage with him when I first met him. I never gave Chet my phone number or any way to contact me. I was just too humble and thought it would be disrespectful to give him my personal information. I have sure wished I'd given him my contact info and some of the songs I wrote.
I take my hat off to Steve and I LOVE this video.
What a cool dude! Steve is a genuine and talented guy. He definitely has some awesome stories..
Steve mentions the Gretsch white falcon that Chet gave him. Just a little trivia. Billy Duffy of The Cult uses a white falcon also. He’s also I would say a CGP.
This guy's a beast. I didn't know he existed a week ago and now he's already one of my favorite guitarists. Talented, of course, but the style and the good humor and humility. Also, his frickin' control. And a soulful voice. It's nuts that it's taken this long to find out about him.
I met Steve the day he left for Nashville my brother in law played drums for him ( Dale Greene ) I remember thinking he is not flashy enough to be star, soft voices, but what a humble person. The only famous person I met in person. Ric from Greenwood Indiana.
As a guitar player in a country band in Dallas Texas in the mid to late1980's, you HAD to play a Steve Wariner song. ANY Steve Wariner song, Why Goodbye, Lynda, on and and on. I was honored to meet him at his gig in Midland, Tx. Great singer, guitar player, great man!
I've loved Steve for decades. Go look up some of his older stuff. So talented on every level. You're right. He's a beast.
The smile on Steve's face when he's going through the pickup sounds, he truly loves that guitar, sometimes the perfect combination just comes along. Great player, great guitar, another great video Zac!
Used to make me mad when Brent and others played guitar on some of STEVE'S RECORDS.... glad that was mentioned. 😮
Great interview, Steve is truly one of the nicest guys, and what a monster player and singer. Thank you Zac for doing this program.
Wow Zac, another wonderful interview. Isn’t Steve the nicest guy. Not only a terrific talent, but one of the good guys.
I'm a rocker but i love 80s country. Steve w is my fave from that era. The weekend. Great song
Ditto. I liked country in the 80s and early 90s a lot.
Man that guitar has an awesome tone- rich and beautiful-- S.W. has talent running out his ears
CGP....enough said! But being one of the most humble and nicest people in the music business means as much or more. What a great human being! God bless you both!
Thank you, and may God Bless You. Zac
What a nice upbringing he had. We should all be so fortunate.
My Blackface Fender Bandmaster had two twelve inch Utah speakers in a closed bottom. Put Altec Lansing speakers in their place. What a fantastic interview. Love Steve's playing, humor and stories!
What a HUGE blessing to have Steve on. Man this guy is so under rated. He's absolutely brilliant. I grew up on this guys music and I love him.
I really hated for that episode to end! So fortunate to have met Steve last year. He really is the nicest guy in the biz!
He is! Zac
What an awesome player and a great guy; so great to have these videos available to hear these masters talk about what their careers are like and where they came from....pure gold for musicians .
Thank you! These are so much fun to do, and we love learning about these players and passing the info on. Zac
So glad to see Steve on Truetone Lounge and thanks to Steve for the shout out. Steve is a gracious friend and I always learn from him. I'll never get enough of his stories from his extensive experiences.
Zac and Bob - well done!
Thank you Jeff!!! Steve was a joy to interview, as were you. Zac
I always remember Steve with his black Takamine cutaway acoustic electric guitar playing his tasty soulful licks live
Steve is so knowledgeable, so willing to share music insights, technology and personal stories. A humble genuinely nice guy. The interviewer is exceptionally knowledgeable and respectful, too. Good job by both.
Thank you so much. Zac
Hey Zac why did you not mention Doyle Dykes? Are you kidding. Steve great playing and thanx for all the country music you brought. Truly a CGp. ❤😊 Props
What an Awesome Interview!!! Steve is Such A Great Player, Writer, & Singer!!! Thanks Zac!!!
Yeah, that was awesome. Steve is as humble as he is talented. Great stories.
Saw Steve and his band in Merryville IN touring for Burning the Road House Down release. He was opening act for George Straight. His playing and his band blew away George's. Tight , Musical and crisp, one of the best live country acts I have seen
He always has a killer band that is well rehearsed. Zac
Zac, knocked it out of the park again. This is fabulous. Steve seems like such a neat guy and what great stories (and playing, of course). I know his reputation but not his music that much. I am certainly going to head over to iTunes and rectify that! Thank you.
There is a wealth of great material out there. His hits for RCA, MCA, Arista, Capitol, and his later, more guitar-centered albums that he has released on his own Selectone label. Zac
When I played on the Canal Boat tours in New Hope Pennsylvania one of the best songs I did was "Hold On". The audience always loved the beauty of this love song. Steve is such a great writer & vocalist. Always one of my favorite musicians.
Steve’s the best
legend...every little lick or phrase he plays is pure magic....perfect gentleman and guitar great
Really digging this channel!
I found it by searching Elliot Easton guitar vids and now I'm learning all about the History of country music just listening in on some interviews with musicians I've never heard of, being that I'm primarily from a Rock based background.
LOVE the guitar lingo & the discussion of music theory as well as technology! Keep up the great journalism, it's SO important to capture this History in the making and sharing the information from the musicians involved.. whether Legends or underground virtuosos and session artists.. there's always fun and often educational stories to be told in music!
I admire your interviewing style having the background in music that you can break down leads in songs and have discussion about what is taking place in a song..like on the fret board!
Steve has always been a favorite player of mine. He's also a great singer and songwriter. I remember the first time I heard There's Holes In The Floor Of Heaven, I was hooked. I'm from Indiana and he sure made a lot of us proud that made Indiana his home. He seems like a very humble and likable guy. This was ANOTHER GREAT interview by you, you do so many great ones really, it's always a pleasure to watch them. Kudos
One of my all-time favorite guitars is Ricky Skaggs’s purple Glaser tele. Put it right there with Clapton’s Brownie, Brent Mason’s grey tele, and Brad Paisley’s ‘68, ‘63, and the original Alcohol tele. I vote to add Ricky to the list of future Truetone Lounge interviews! If it happens, please insist on him bringing his purple tele.
On to Steve, what a great guy and picker, and those Ron Ellis pickups sound amazing in that guitar! This red tele is one of the first guitars I remember - next to Merle Haggard’s signature tele and Waylon’s leather-bound teles.
Once again a great interview, Zac! This was my third time watching it.
I have been trying to get Ricky, and I would absolutely have him bring the purple Tele. I agree Wariner's Glaser is one of the iconic Telecasters. Thanks, Joshua! Zac
These professional guitar players always have the coolest guitars. That red Telecaster just has the look.☺☺☺
Steve will always be my favorite balladeer!! One of the best voices I growled up on !! Miss old country
Man I have always been a Steve Wariner fan just came across this interview ,thanks so much Zac . Your are a guitar mans guitar man!
I would love to hear the great Steve Wariner and one of blues greatest , the awesome Robin Ford play and sing together . I would be elated !! Wow !!
Awesome interview and nice to the Sharp amp too. I love my ‘65 Deluxe also. What an amp.
One of my heroes! I credit Steve for making country so much better! Life's Highway with Jerry Douglas on dobro is still one of my all time favorites!
That was an incredible episode! What a down to earth guy Steve is! Not many players have done more for country music then he has, and there certainly is not a better picker out there!
Amazing Talent! Genious! Love him! How sweet he met all the greats and played with them! What a great life! Cant imagine knowing all of those artist as friends. Blesse life for sure. Steve is Awesome!
Steve Wariner is my all time favorite guitar player
Hey Zac! I’m just devouring your older posts - and they’re so good! (you’ve lost some weight as you’ve gracefully aged! I’m 64, so I’m pulling your leg pretty hard - lol. I knew about SW’s work and his CGP certification speaks for itself - but I knew nothing about the man. I get a heavy Chet vibe from him - he’s humble, smart, experienced and insightful.
What a great interview and introduction to Steve as a person.
Thanks
Peace
Don't pull my leg, it might fall off!
I was at a taping for a TV special in Austin with Chet, Steve, Earl Klugh, Eric Johnson.
Steve is a Legend.
Why would anybody give a thumbs down to an interview like this?
What's not to like? Zac
Someone who has no interest in the content.. they're not "hip" to how cool it is & probably can't even understand what these professionals even talk about!
Yes!!!! Let’s honor this man…
I've always been such a huge fan of Steve since discovering him in the the early 90's and listening to his RCA greatest hits on cassette. It had all the great songs on it such as "Your Memory, Kansas City Lights, All Roads Lead To You etc. I've got email letters from Steve that he responded to and have them kept in a file. I always go back and listen to those recording and own many of his CD's. Truly a great artist and such an inspiration.
Thank you for sharing that. He is an inspiration to us too. Zac
What a classy guy and an absolute Master of the Telecaster👍
Great interview Zac. Steve is an awesome player and an amazing person!
Great interview and Steve is so nice.Great player as well. Would love to meet him. Thanks
Another great interview! Thanks for doing these.
Both of these guys represent only the very best of what we can be when we conduct our lives with integrity, honesty and passion!! Thank you indeed Zak AND Steve for all the magic:))
You are so welcome and thank you so much for the very kind words. Zac
Live hearing you play Steve xoxo miss playing since a stroke but music still is in screaming to come out 😢
Another outstanding interview in the books! Keep it up and thank you much!
This interview may have been 4 years ago .... but it's SOLID gold !
Steve, I don't know if you monitor this feed but man, what an inspiration you have been. Thanks for all you do!!!
Great job as always! Thank you! 👍🎸
Wonderful interview. Thanks for sharing. I loved 80s and early 90s country including Steve Wariner. The Q&A brought back good memories of dancing at the Yellow Rose in Sacramento (Citrus Heights), back in the day. Named one our cats Spiderman from "Lynda." He showed up one day in our backyard, climbed up the side of our house, and looked at me through the bathroom window when I was shaving. Ended up adopting him. He was a cool cat.
Great interview. Thank you so much.
man, you're killin it with these interviews, so entertaining and you learn something from each one. I loved the Brent one and this is so great. thanks for doing these. jimmyc
Thanks, Jimmy. You are so welcome. Zac
Steve is the man- saw him one time , there was maybe 50 people there- what a killer player and influence-
Another great show Zac. What a great story and interview.
Amazing man....amazing talent.....
Bravo! Thanks Zac!
What a great interview, and what a great and talented guy.
So glad I got to meet Steve a couple times. One of the nicest guys I ever met. Zac is so knowledgeable, the greatest interviewer.
Wow! What a great interview!
I’ve seen Steve play live quite a few times since the early 80’s and I’d look forward to it every time he’s just such a great musician and vocalist….👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Lovely interview and what a beautiful sounding Telecaster.
What incredible stories!
Your interviews are always a treat, thanks so much! Loved it!
Cheers!
Thank you for watching! Zac
What a great down to earth guy and a great guitar player.
Another terrific interview
Again Zac, a fabulous interview with a fascinating subject. Thanks!!
Thank you Colin! Zac
Ernie brings back memories for me my dear gran bless her always asked me what the words were ,as her hearing wasn’t great. Convoy reminds of my dear Dad . And funky moped ,magic roundabout.**** off said Florence lol 😂 . Happy memories.
I have been a SW fan for many many years and have tried to have seen them all and this is the by far one of the best interviews. Steve's talent and his brilliant gift and impact to country music has always been underrated. But for some of us lucky ones that have followed him throughout his journey on Life's Highway have known we were witnessing a legend and this interview proves exactly that....AWESOME STUFF from you both!!!
Thank you for the kind words. He is a brilliant musician, singer, and songwriter, and is secure enough to give credit to people like Reggie Young, who made sizeable contributions to his albums. Zac
Awesome job Zac!
Greet interview...thanks
What a great man. And when he just casually played a lick it was a sound to die for. How that guitar soynfs was unbelievable. I watched this over and over, never get tired of listening to him pkay and talk.
Steve is still one of the best songwriters of all time not to mention the talent he possesses on a guitar.
I was watching some other videos then this popped on. Makes me emotional hearing Steve talk about Roy.
Roy taught me how to play before he had his stroke. I’m thankful for him and what all I learned from Roy!
love steve the very best!! phrasing...knowing when to be simple and every note is so damn COUNTRY!!!!
Great lesson thanks for sharing
Love his voice and playing…..grew up wearing out his cassettes and CD’s.
Top shelf as always!
Could listen to him all day , these guitar players are such great guys .
awesome episode
Once again, an awesome interview!
Thank you for watching Tim. Zac
Steve is awesome! And humble and kind!
One of my good friends is Steve's mgr.
I got to meet Steve in Nville through B.@ a Halloween Party on the river at a Bryan White Concert in 1997.
Steve was dressed up as Frankenstein when he walked onstage and no one knew who it was.
Got to meet his wife and son,who actually sat in and played a couple with Bryan and the band.
Steve and his family are really nice folks.
I cover a few of his tunes.
Monster Guitar Player!
Monster Player!
Great interview! I've been a Steve Wariner fan for many years, really enjoyed this Zac!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a truly brilliant interview. Thank you so much!
Thanks for listening
