You’re way too kind Rhett! I’m humbled and honored you took the time to make this video. You rule!
You're a guitar beast with a great first name! Thank you for years of wonderful inspiration and endless humor...you rock my friend!
Love u man!!
I've just got exposed to your art by this video, and I loved every bit of it. You really have an incredibly unique style and sound, I love it! You've just got a new listener.
Dear Greg , He is just fucking right!...i quit playing guitar 40 years ago.... I got a new Tele in 2018, took out My old 100W Amp full of spider webs from storage, because of You... I hate You :D!
The thing is... You can just play anything...and that's what I always wanted as a kid but could never come close to.
Would be great to see You jam with Jeff Beck as You two have this thing in common of creating sound with any part of your hands flesh, as if actually it was your body creating sound rather than the instrument.
Love your personality Greg...you are one funny dude, a great player and have that midwestern zing going for you!!! Also, have purchased guitars from Wildwood. Blues/Rock/Country-on, my brother!!
Greg’s versatility and technical abilities can be easily overlooked because of his charisma and humor, but once you stop laughing at the jokes and really listen to what he’s doing, it’s unreal. A one of a kind talent.
TBA, love your channel, too for that awesome Texas Blues instruction ala Stevie Ray Vaughn and other Blues greats!!!
He is amazing. Watched his for years. I also watched TBA for years too. 🎸👍👍👀
I hear Danny Gatton every time I hear him, but even better and more entertaining.
Perfectly stated and absolutely true!
THIS!
The perfect combination of virtuosity, confidence, fearlessness… and humor. Greg is THE MAN.
Greg guitar playing is so good that it makes you either want to stop playing or makes you appreciate the guitar like it was the first day you got your first electric. He always makes me happy when I hear him play.
Yeah, it's that either/or thing-he's so good that that sometimes there are thoughts of this is pointless why bother? But he's so inspiring that he does make me want to improve and do the work. Robben Ford is also a longtime favorite who does the same thing. Yes, we are blessed that Greg is out playing and knocking us out with his brilliance!
LOVED Josh Smith’s expressions in the background. You could tell he was really enjoying what was going on right next to him.
Yeah… I think it was the “I know I’m pretty damn good, but this guy ➡️🤯” look! 😜
It never gets old 😂
Josh is from another planett too.
they both complement each other perfectly. josh is another beast
You mentioned a few guitarists but the one Greg reminds me of most is Guthrie Govan. They both have that scary facility to play absolutely anything but also the very rare ability to play with a sense of humor.
yeah I was thinking the same in the intro piece. Guthrie is the one other player that I can think of who can play just about anything
listen to Greg Howe's first album.......to hear Guthrie Govan 30 years ago!
(GG sounds just like GH!)
I hate all the shredders, but Greg Howe was the only one throwing in JAZZ and chromaticisms while everyone else was going neo-classical. (ZZZZZ)
I was thinking of Guthrie and Scott Henderson
@@jonbongjovi1869 What in the world are you talking about? GG sounds nothing like Howe!
Came here to say this. Cheers from Memphis!
THE KOCHNESS MONSTER !! I saw him live this summer . During the show I got a lil emotional cause I knew I was witnessing greatness . The promoters for the show didn't promote this show . There was 30 ppl in a 300+ size venue . Greg and his band mates Dylan "Big Deal" Koch and Toby "The Tickler" Marshall still played like their life depended on it .
At the Westside Bowl? Yes, in the presence of greatness. And what a cool human being. I stood outside the venue talking with him and Dylan for quite a while before the show.
Love the nickname-ha ha. THAT is a keeper! Sorry to hear about the bad promo, I swear if promoters and record companies had any clue about what they're supposed to be doing, maybe musicians of Greg and his band's caliber would be much better served. And better paid! And yes, it doesn't surprise me that they still killed with only a small crowd. They are totally dedicated, love their music and that's what it's all about!
I remember the day I stumbled upon all those Wildwood videos. I watched them for literally hours, crying with laughter and being blown away by his playing. Truly a one off human-being!
Crying with laughter indeed. The funniest musician I've ever seen, and as everyone can see, what a player. Remember Festus McCorkindale and the All-night Pounders?
Greg is a Wisconsin legend. I have been in the scene here for many years and he has a rabid fan base from many walks of life here…especially in all of the music and band circles here in Wisconsin. I have seen him play with a number of different artists and, despite his incredible guitar chops, he still knows how to serve the song and the artist he is playing with extremely well. He is also so ridiculously funny. We are a blessed bunch here that we get to enjoy the musicality and guitar “guru-ness” of Mr. Greg Koch!
Cool to hear your info, I didn't know he was from Wisconsin. That explains it doncha know! Yeah, not only is he a virtuoso guitarist he is so funny he could be working stand-up! (And he basically does when he gigs anyway-ha ha). I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know about him until 8 months ago and how is that even possible? My loss most definitely. Saw one of his live vids and, of course, was completely blown away! There are alot of killer players who play legit chicken pickin' country but not many of them can play superb blues/rock too. Roy Buchanan comes to mind, Tom Bukovac too. I'm sure Brad Paisley or Vince Gill could destroy with some serious rock riffage if they wanted to. Of course there's always the possibility that many of the telemonsters can play rock convincingly but don't often get the opportunity/gig to do so. I played a year of straight country and woah, did I get an up close and personal educational experience! Gained a total appreciation of the style and country musicians are some of the nicest people around!
The Wildwood highlights of him goofing off are some of the best things I’ve seen
Metal Poppins!!!
How many players can you say surprise you every time you see or hear them? A truly, truly phenomenal musician.
Greg Koch is truly a guitar God! He's way to humble to ever place himself in that category, so I'm thrilled Rhett that you are doing this video! Great job sir.
I was fortunate to meet Greg last Wednesday in Livonia, MI at Rock City music. Such an entertainer, but more importantly just a nice person. Very humble and cool to hang out with. A lot of jaws dropped to the floor watching him play for an hour.
The thing is, he's never showing off, but joyfully exploring, and it's obvious as he emits that energy. We're fortunate to be in Milwaukee and have been taking in his live performances for decades. Humble guy who knows what his fans want and he delivers - every time. He can mimic all his influences with perfection. What knowledge base. Happy the internet has expanded his reach. As a guitar player, I love that he shares so much content.
Greg is such a monster player and in many ways reminds me of a young Danny Gatton. Such a unique and masterful style, nearly impossible to copy or duplicate.
Just by the intro and description, I immediately thought “Danny Gatton.”
I thought the same thing! Lol
Also some Roy Buckhannon sprinkled in..
Josh's expressions in the first clip tell us alot. Josh is no pushover in the guitar prowess dept. So when a guy like that smiles and almost gets giddy hearing/watching a dude like Greg play, you know it's genuine and special.
That man is a beast on the guitar. Finally saw him live in Charlotte NC. recently. Face, melted.
Greg is great, funny as hell and always inspired. He’s not just some knock off, sure he is an encyclopedia of the great players but he always puts his own unique spin on all of the styles he plays. Most importantly, as a stylist he brings an incredible physical/technical prowess to everything he plays and sounds like nobody else even while evoking his heroes. Go see him live if you have any doubts!
Encyclopedia is a very apt word. Hendrix? He has no problem conjuring Jimi vibes, Danny Gatton, Buchanan, Chet Atkins, the three blues Kings etc etc. he's assimilated all of those players styles and has his own rather jawdropping style as well. Very good point on how he retains his individuallity while evoking his heroes-spot on sir! And he wears his Nudies western shirts-so cool!
Oh yeah. Love me some Gregory Kochery! Been blowing my mind for years! I've played guitar for over 50 years and his level of skill is beyond comprehension.
It's so nice to see real pros like you react the same way like anybody else. He is just nuts.
Welcome to the Gristle Gang, Rhett! 😛 It is something special when you drop by Greg's live streams, for sure. Great episode! 🔥👍❤
I just knew I'd see you in these comments, ^5 ! 😁
I had no idea who Greg was till I saw him on a Wildwood Guitars video several years ago. I was stunned. I can't think of more than a few guitarists who could come close to what he does. He is simply amazing to watch and hear.
From the early demos for Fender in the eighties, up to THAT: Greg is a beast. A one-man unequaled wizard of the Tele fretboard. VERY underrated. I'm a long time fan...
He’s definitely another level! Thanks for posting Rhett
Greg is such an unbelievable player. His guitar language is out of this world
There are guitar players and then there are the true monsters of the instrument that when you watch and hear them play, you just cannot help but smile. Guess which group Greg belongs to. And he's got arguably the most interesting, wickedly fun spoken vocabulary in music. GRISTLE BABY!!! Truly a giant, gem of a human being.
Greg is truly is a musical treasure that we’re lucky to have.
I sold Greg some strings at Guitar Center in Danvers, MA probably 15 years ago. I don’t remember the conversation, all I remember was the dude had me cracking up laughing. Everything he said was absolutely hilarious. He was super cool. And he is a MONSTER player, for sure.
Saw him at the Fender Roadshow in Durban, South Africa quite a few years ago. Extremely talented and has the humor to go with it. Was an absolute treat to watch a master of the craft at work.
Greg is honestly such a unique player. He's got this Ringo Starr groove to his playing; the guitar notes are falling down the stairs, in key, with all the frills and gristle. They explode off the fretboard. I can't describe it other than... Juicy.
The way way Greg catches the guitar on harmonics just before it’s feedbacks it’s amazing. What a sick detailed guitar player.
Yeah, he is a total master-Roy Buchanan was also really good at that. I love it when they play in and out of feedback off of harmonics sometimes letting it go full bloom feedback, then there's those volume swells. It's dazzling! Greg has all the goods!
Greg is everything you said and more. Part of his secret sauce is the fact that he is 6’8”. His reach on the keyboard is other worldly. The size and strength of his hands makes it easy for him to forego a wiggle stick. He does it all with his hands. He is always good for a mood upgrade on a tough day. Thanks Rhett and Mansquatch!
Yikes...I meant fretboard. Sorry Toby.
Some of the most humorous, goofy, fun, and virtuosic playing every. Truly spectacular and leaves you with a huge smile. Rock out with your Koch out!
Really enjoying these analysis type videos!
There is SO much joy and humor in his playing. CRAZY stuff and a super cool guy.
I saw SRV twice in concert. The only two players I've seen play with his ferocity, passion and intensity are Greg Koch and Eric Gales - told Eric this at the Dallas Guitar Show a few years back. Truly inspiring. Greg has been has been a great supporter of my Lava Cable's and I got him a gig here in Tulsa a few years ago.
I’ve also been watching him for years, mainly through Wildwood videos. It is uncanny how versatile he is and how his fun, comedic personality comes through in his playing! It’s like you said, he tells jokes with licks
The man’s a machine! One of my absolute favourite players and he’s easily the funniest musician out there…..legend
Love it when the Gristlemaster gets recognition! Awesome, Rhett!
Greg is such a guitar hero. I remember catching him at local demos at Milwaukee shops as teenager. Now I'm managing a shop in the same city and I know Greg played a part in that. So inspiring!
His playing is astonishing
It’s as natural as breathing to him to play at that level with that skill with that field, he is unmatched on all levels
Met Greg in Melbourne Australia. He is a monster. The power of "Gristleman" is amazing. Ask him about Festus McCorkindale....
Thanks for putting language to what I've felt for years! Greg is a living legend. Thanks for helping to define some of those "Greg-isms," Rhett. I'm full blown addicted to your channel man - thanks for reigniting my passion for guitar!!!
I Just started your Barebones Guitar Course. And the First Chapter Alone is a Gamechanger. I can now remember most of my Fretboard easily.
Greg definitely helped keep me going during lockdown.
Greg is definitely a player with tons of personality. His note choices are often “humorous”…and I mean that in a good way. He has literally made me laugh with his playing; I love that! He’s also a fricken comedian; the Wildwood videos are just hilarious! One of my favorite musicians.
I've met Greg several times at guitar related events here in Dallas and what you see is what you get! He's as nice in person as he comes across in videos and there aren't words to describe his playing. Thanks for the video, Rhett!
I just found out about Greg about 2 years ago. Since then, he is at the top of my bucket list of guitarists I want to see live.
He's got the gristle!!!
Greg always leaves a smile on my face, what more can we ask?
Exactly…!
In addition to Greg's insane leads, the way he comps during Toby's leads is jaw-dropping. It's all non-stop changes and unexpected harmonies, but is never intrusive or overshadowing. It's almost like Joe Pass with a sense of humor on rhythm guitar.
Yeah, dude is a monster on the guitar. Doesn't have to hide behind a ton of effects pedals, just plays his heart out. Wish I had 1% of his talent, I would be 500 times better than I am now.
I've got more than 1% but probably well under 10...he is a monster. I know exactly how you feel...everytime I watch him the guilt of not practicing enough seems to always hit me.
Perhaps not a ton of pedals, but his amp has reverb, three or four different overdrive stages (with a certain combination coming across as a fuzz) and harmonic tremolo. Effects are effects regardless where they come from. He also uses delay pedals.
Really good vid brodda! Big fan of both of ya's
You are preachin' to the choir Rhett ...He is phenomenal and funny as hell !!! Been following him for years and he never ceases to amaze and entertain !!!
Been watching him forever on wildwood for sure. He is pretty incredible.
he was great on those wildwood demos, but he's such a distinct guitar player that after a while any piece of gear he plays sounds the same
Great stuff!! that reverend 12 string video gets rewatched at my house every couple months! incredible!!
Glad you highlight him. He never fails to amaze, even when noodling!
I absolutely love seeing how lost you get in it! You’re doing a show and can’t stop the vid of him playing.
That is cool sir!
Feels criminal to be this early.
Greg absolutely deserves the highest praise, an absolute monster player with a great sense of humor.
The funk tune is not improvised, it's one of his songs called "Foolish Mortals"... which we all are in His presence!
PS: We are all still waiting for his broadway show - "The Metal Poppins Experience!" :D
Cheers!
HM
I've been completely mesmerised by Greg Koch for several years now. The amazing thing about what he does is how he inspires. He does things on the fretboard that most will never be able to do. Some guitarists make me sad or frustrated in that case. But with him, it's so entertaining that it just makes you smile. And it always pushes me to try something new. Great video!
Wow he is great . Thanks for posting this video Rhett .. I really enjoy watching him play . I need to see if Greg will be appearing near me .
That phaser thing is not that hard once you figure it out. Could be wrong but I always thought of that as an EVH thing at least that's where I picked it up. But yeah amazing player. I think I first saw him on a Guthrie Govan video and I was like "who's the other guy?!"
I always think Randy Rhoads and the beginning of Crazy Train.
I first stumbled on Greg's playing when checking out his demo of Mateus Asato Signature Suhr guitar on Wildwood channel.
His ability of noodling, amount of vocabulary and the way he come up with ideas and connect them so smoothly is just out of this world.
Pure genius.
Got to see him at NAMM 2020 and then caught the trio that weekend at a small club. Mind.totally.blown. And yes, super nice guy that would loan you his power washer if you needed it.
I live in the Milwaukee area and have been following Greg for years. Seen him many times & it never gets old. He’s a monster in both his playing & physical stature. Real nice, humorous human😎🎸🔥
An ever flowing fountain of creativity. A surprise around every corner. Never boring.
Glad you made this video! Greg is the MAN!
Rhett - new to your channel... dig your genuine approach and honesty... as a big SRV fan, totally agree on Greg and his personality... he is kind of nuts and I love it! Would love to hear more about your new amp!
The best video you have ever posted! Insane. Frisell mixed with Guthrie, Buchanon, more.
Wow. Greg is awesome! I've become a fan and a subscriber to Greg's channel. Thanks Rhett.
totally agree with you rhett. been amazed with him for years.actually met and talked to him briefly at a clinic he did near me a few years ago. he is awesome and very inspiring.
One of my favorites of his is his series of demos for JAM Pedals, just pure DOMINANCE and prowess and extremely fun
I love those demos. Laughed so hard and my jaw just dropped from his playing
Rhett you perfectly summarized everything I love about Greg’s playing, personality, professionalism, and panache! Thanks for shining light on a true superstar!
I agree... At times Greg does have a sound like SRV. I've lived in Dallas all my life.
Stevie was short... (The hat and Boots will trick the eye to make one think otherwise) But, he had ridiculously large, strong hands. If I recall correctly he played tens or 11s. Just like Greg there was an absolute fire that drove that intensity for 90 minutes. I was blessed to get to see him in the fall of 1989 and the dichotomy of the show and watching Jeff Beck open with Stevie as the headliner was absolutely amazing. Both were unbelievably good but the intensity that Stevie played his guitar was unbelievable.
Thanks for sharing some Greg with the folks Rhett, he is just incredible!! Cheers brother!!
Great video Rhett!
Love Greg! We (my wife and I) watch him in the orange room every Friday after work! 🙂
He's a beast, I've learned so much from him and not just from his guitar playing, he's a SUPER nice guy and person hands down!
Thanks for all you do here and for posting this Rhett!
“What even is that?” That’s what it’s all about! What every musician is shooting for. Soul, feel, passion, dedication, musicianship just oozing out his pores!!!
Rhett I listen to Greg with my mouth as it's always hanging open when he plays. The man is soooo good it's hard to comprehend the mastery. I also laugh and chuckle as it's so fun and you know that is exactly the reaction he strives for and achieves.
Totally agree.
He is a phenomenon!
Love to see him play, and always amazed over again..
Great video!
Love seeing Greg get some well deserved attention
"Outstanding" comes to mind, he can completely transpose his personality directly on to a guitar.
He's a treasure of inspiration unlike no other.
Love Greg!
Very astute observations Rhett. A great tribute is a wonderful gift to the man himself but also very helpful for us!
I saw Greg in Rotterdam (Netherlands), performing at a shop and I was impressed. Since then I follow him on FB. He's a great player. I even bought a Tele (not only for Greg, but he did inspire me). Hope to see him in the Netherlands.
Great video!
Amen Rhett! Greg is everything you say along with having so much dang fun living life and playing the guitar. What a treat and a blessing. Caught his show in San Diego last year in a small venue. I consider myself fortunate to have caught the show. The Koch Marshall Trio melted faces and slayed the stage. I can dig it always!!
Greg is outrageously awesome… have to say I also loved Rhett facial expressions in the video, especially on the funk playing.. fantastic channel this. Love it.👍👍
I saw Greg and the Koch Marshal Trio in Edinburgh a few years ago and it was hugely inspiring and LOADS of fun!
When I ran across Greg on Gristletime recently I was blown away by his style. Now I watch him every time he puts out a new video and dream about having those guitar skills.
I used to read his columns in the guitar magazines in the 90's. I'm definitely going to check his channel out, the guy has incredible talent.
Niyze demo of incredible augmentic feelings and expression, loving the results. Thanks for the good demos and.. :)
One of my favorite guitar players hands down!!! really gifted!!!! Keep it up master!!!💥🔥
Just caught one of Mr. Koch's videos of him and in a three piece and I must say he is outstanding to watch and hear, super cool and fun , great tone, great chops amazing player , never missed a bass player, the keyboard and drummer rounded out the sound perfectly. Smashing!
Great video Rhett! There's only one thing about Greg that I think is missing on the video: he is a great writer and all his albums are filled with great songs. I specially love "4 days in the south".
I really enjoyed your pentatonic mastery course. I might pick this one up, too.
One of my fav moves he does is when he frets a chord and the highest pitched note or two are fretted by his index finger (and that is all that finger is doing,no full bar) and he then keeps the lower notes static as he slides the high notes up and down with the index.
Spot on, Rhett. Greg's a living legend.
Cheers..
We saw Greg live in September down here in South Florida at The Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton! What an amazing show!!!
Every time I watch Gregory Kochery rock out like a pagan warlord of the night, I simultaneously want to practice more, and sell all my guitars… a monster player for sure, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen. And don’t even get me started on his tone, his rig is just down right dripping with it, between his Signature pickups and his “The Greg” amp.
My favorite Greg performance on YT is “Way Back Home” live in Milwaukee. He’s playing his Greg Martin 58 Custom Shop LP. I go back to that video for instant smiles.
Appreciate the insight, new Subscription added. The "Since I've Been Loving You", performance in Dallas from this year. Mind blown
Hey Rhett, I really enjoy your channel, and this takes it to a new level. Showcasing Greg Koch is so overdue! I talk to a lot of my musician friends who have never heard of Greg, which is a shame. Time to bring awareness of his abilities to the masses!
One thing I love about Greg is that he ain't scared of pushing it to the limit. He's not scared and ventures into chromatic madness and pulls it of with a natural elegance all of his own.
