You can’t beat the gas Honda with the twin blade micro cut system ! I have both ! The Honda is my go to mower ! The electric ⚡️ is my spare !
I have both a Honda Hru194 bull and an ego 21”. I used to run a lawn business and the Honda clocked 4000hrs no issues and did serious tough work.
These days I’m retired and just maintain my own place. I bought the ego for convienience but here in QLD Australia on QLD blue cooch. It struggles in summer and cuts out. I mow religiously every 5 days at a height of 1.5”
I’ve had it a year and the electronics shit itself. At winter growth it’s fine and is a good finish.
The bagger is just hopeless. I just replaced my old Honda with a new HRU194 commercial and it is brilliant so hopefully I’ll get another 4000hrs our of this one. But the cut on the new one is just brilliant very impressed
In 1 month my EGO self propelled function failed. Also when the grass is damp forget about mulching. The EGO leaves tracks and clumps behind. And it is not do to my error. I move slowly, take 1/2 cuts, cut every 3 to 4 days and still leaves tracks. I thought I would like this but it is not a mower for wet climates like Pittsburgh PA in the Spring. I will be returning this 1 month old mower!
I want to add that double cutting helps. But who wants to cut their yard 2 times every 3 or 4 days. Neighbors probably think I am nuts. I cut my grass 2-1/2 to 3 in high and never bag.
you need the Honda then!!
I have owned the Ego for 4 years and it's great. My yard is a bit larger than yours. I have several batteries because I own the mower, older handblower, and backpack blower. I wouldn't go back to gas if you paid me. No gas storage in my garage, no filters, no oil, no noise pollution. Too many positives over gas for a littler more power to matter.
Rob J I'm 100% with you on that
Rob J I can't wait for the day this becomes a standard for contractors. Hopefully a recharge station with charged batteries can exist where contractors run out of theirs on the go, to continue working all day. 👈 One day
Mow Better Lawn Service
I believe Dewalt already has a charging station...maybe it's more like a station with about 6 batteries that can be tapped for power. that being said, no other manufacturer cam touch Ego mowers or batteries.
I know it'll be hard bringing contractors over to the battery side but we all know...it's coming at some point.
Rob J Milwaukee made a strong push this year sending their battery products to some well known landscapers here and it looks promising, they also like it. I'm for this and would help starting and ending the day sooner and later in areas with tighter noise restriction.
Mow Better Lawn Service
You are totally right. The workday could start sooner with the great reduction in noise the tools would make. Also it would be a good marketing to say that your company has gone green.
I just got the newest version of ego self propelled mower and it has 2 blades like the Honda. It is amazing.
I just got it too. Did you leave both blades on? Not sure if I should.
I love my Makita, Milwaukee, and Dewalt battery powered tools. However I have a push mower with a Honda engine and it’s 23 years old. Cranks on the first pull. I just bought an HRX 217 with blade stop. Not sure if these battery mowers can last like the Honda’s. Thanks for the review.
I'm not sure if it was already answered but the height settings for that mower is for the 20 inch. The 21" mower is adjustable from 1.5" to 4" in six 1/2" steps
Amador Cortez thanks!
I would just measure each setting, get the sharpie out, and write the measurements on the mower.
Amador Cortez sounds right also one hundred dollars per notch @ six notches (plus tax ofcourse)
I have the ego self propelled. Had it a few months now and do love it. I have a relatively small yard, about 2.5k sqft, and can get 3 cuts with a 7.5ah battery. It drops slightly if I use the self propel. Only negative I have with it is when I use the side chute it leaves a small trail of grass. It doesn't seem to really disperse the grass as well as my gas mower.
I have the Self driven 56v EGO mower and really like it. I really liked my Craftman 6.7 hp 21" and had zero problems with it for 20 years but I got tired of the gas and oil requirements. I also noticed that the EGO does not have the vacuum pull and does not leave as "Clean" a lawn but there are so many other benefits (headlights, folding and standing on its end, 90 lbs weight, easy tip and clean the underside, and short battery charging time) This was a great review for this new technology, thanks Grass Daddy
Thanks for watching! I'm hoping I'll get to test out the Craftsman battery mower on my lawn. I played with it at their launch event but that wasn't on grass. The vacuum / clean cut really depends on the deck and blade design so I'm curious if Craftsman having decades on Ego for design will have a better battery version.
the vacuum is great - picks up the grass and not the rocks - I can mow over rocks and not worry
Great video. I learned a lot. Small suggestion though: please lose the whistling soundtrack thing in the background. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was just a moment or two in the intro, but it was maddening to listen to throughout. I know that might sound lame or snarky or troll-like, but I don't mean it to be. This was a very helpful video and I really appreciate you making it and posting it. Thanks!
Yeah I think I figured out volume leveling now. I also realized my speakers and headphones have the music at different levels so I was adjusting with the speakers that you couldn't hear it as much so I put it too loud =p
You're the man! Again, thanks for the good video. Wife and I are looking to replace our Honda gas mower (stolen last fall) -- and we're considering a battery powered one. I think we're gonna do it. Your video really showed how quiet it was around the 6:17 mark. Crazy! Anyway, thanks again!!
Waiting for Honda to make a battery mower with the best features of their gas mowers, such as the throttle control and the door system for bagging or mulching. If EGO did that it would be great too. I see that their newest mower has dual blades.
What about the battery replacement cost? I have used my Honda for 23 years. The engine will never die. However, the deck is rusting out from the Florida humidity and only one wheel turns now with the self propel system..... but 23 years with very little maintenance. Just oil changes as needed. I like the idea of battery powered, except from the reviews I read, the batteries need changed every few years and cost half as much as the mower itself. Some people are saying they replace batteries almost yearly. If that is true then it becomes not very cost efficient.
i have several ego tools for over 3 years and all of the batteries still work great. The batteries have a 3 year warranty
Bought the ego self propelled last year and I will never buy a gas mower ever again 😎 l was also so impressed with the ego mower I got the ego leaf blower last fall and it did a fantastic job. And yesterday I got the ego chain saw and auto loading weed wacker. So I guess that makes me ego friendly 😁
hehe yeah it's pretty good tech!
I’m wanting to know how it is now. You commented this comment over a year ago, and I’m wanting to know how it is after 2 years. 😌

How’s the ego if you bag Your clippings? The twin blade on the Honda is great for mulching and bagging.
LOVE my EGO. Have mine going on 4 years ZERO problems. Also bought the hedge trimmer, also works great.
I mow tall fescue at 3 to 3.5 inches with a Honda HRX217 just like yours. I typically have to double cut in the spring when the grass is thriving, plus it makes for a cleaner cut and gives an opportunity to cross cut. I love my mower and would have a hard time switching to a cordless electric/ battery powered mower. I do like how quiet the electric/battery powered mowers are, but that seems to be the only plus for me with the Ego.
I’m going with the Honda HRX217.
I see you have Stihl trimmer and blower and Fiskars lopper.
Same as I have.
You know which equipment is good.
The numbers should definitely correspond to inches of height.
To me the lawn doesn't even look cut very well with either of them. You didn't mention but I think one can tell that the cut path is wider on the gas mower. The electric ones typically have a narrower cut path which would be OK for smaller lawns. What is that roller thing at the back of the Honda?
It's a striper, you can really see the effect when he does the side yard.
I gave up on the Old idea of having a green lawn. I grow more fruits and veggies than I do the lawn. But I still have a Need for the Ego plus it's on my List.
We have almost an acre, I put in A strawberry Patch and a quarter acre garden, so I could cut down mowing. I also Believe heviliy in the Idea of Water conservation, So I use Cocnut Coir to save moisture in my soil.
Only thing I "regret" is not getting a house with more land. My wife grows a ton in our small garden but we could grow so much more if we had more space ;-)
I have .48 acres and I need to charge my battery about 3/4 of the through the cut. I'm also not a fan of the mulching and bagging of the EGO. I'm going to be buying a HRX 217 VKA shortly. That being said, the EGO is super quiet...and light...and not gas and oil changes is great. But I'm looking more power and the ability to finish my lawn in one go.
I absolutely LOVE my EGO. I don't have the self-propelled version, but the thing is so light it's rediculous. And I don't have asthma either. Mine seems to do a great job with mulching, even at taller thicker grass levels. I don't regret this purchase . I have burmuda (front) and zoysia (back) grasses.
awesome! it's a fun mower for sure, feels like I'm pushing a box fan around hehe
Grass Daddy 🤣🤣😂😂
I just bought an EGO self-propelled for the beginning of this season. LOVE IT. Never dealing with gas, sparks, oil, carburetors again. And it cuts/mulches just great. I'm sold forever.
Take the wife; leave the mower!
Yeah I want to do a "how to winterize the ego mowers" video, where we push it into the garage lol
Bosch cordless mower
I have many EGO products, weed eater, blower, hedge trimmers, along with gas of each. EGO's are convenient, but I have been finding out that my EGO batteries will show green for a charge, then go dead within 5-10 minutes. Batteries are expensive as heck as well. I thought I would never go back to gas, but I still do use gas on most occasions.
@@VaporheadATC Check the warranty, believe the battery/charger is 3 yrs. Mower is 5.
Spend your $$ in gasoline at the store ...
OR
Spend your $$ in electric bill to keep charging those batteries ...
Its no different than a Gasoline engine VS a Tesla ....
Thanks for the review. I purchased the Ego mower and can validate everything said here. The thing is dead easy to use. It is also very quiet.
Great review!... i am thinking about starting a little lawn business... lets say 3-4 average yards each day for some extra money..i want to just use electric equipment since i think many customers would like the quiet factor... i did this 40 years ago for many years... question is since this video was made is there a top notch electric mower now that matches a 6.5 hp gas push? also i really don't want self propelled either... I did go in a store and see 80 volt electric 21 inch mowers for $250... clerk had no specs... thinking 2 batties could handle 3-4 yards a day... but thats just a guess... i already have electric string trimmer, which i love... its 5 years old and still works perfect...but i see they have really bad ass electric trimmers available compared to mine also... any help is appreciated... thanks
what’s interesting is the Honda actually gave me a lower db on my tester… when you played the cut far away the Ego was quieter, it’s a different type of sound though. Gas is a lot quieter than it used to be. I have a Greenworks 40V and a Husqvarna 160cc (Honda engine), the Husqvarna does seem louder but not much different. I actually found the motor whirring sound of a battery powered device more annoying… also with a mower the motor is running full all the time whereas battery has an over-drive mode which can seem quite loud
Thanks for that input.
Do you by chance have any experience that would tell you how an Ego would compare to a Honda gas mower at shredding leaves?
From what I have gathered it kind of sounds like electric mowers have a slower blade speed and don't mulch as well so I kind of assume they would not work as well.
I shred all my leaves (I just lay a layer out and run over them 4 or 5 times) in the fall and put it on my garden beds. I have a TON of leaves so it's a pretty big deal for me.
what a nice guy sharpening Happy Hippies blade for him.
Justin Ledvina they were in rough shape but happy hippie dont know how to use tools
Grass Daddy
He knows how to use them but why would he when other people do it for him? ;)
I am thinking of getting a battery powered mower to replace my 21 year old toro, but concerned because my backyard stays wet longer so it grows quickly and is thick not sure how well the ego would plow through a tall damp lawn. Any idea of the life expectancy of a battery operated mower? I am on 21 years with my gas Toro so am a little hesitant to jump to battery power . I may just wait a couple years for battery mowers to get better
Which mower do you prefer now after you've been using them? I'm not sold on cordless and I'm highly considering a new honda mower over an electric. The mulching alone is a big deal.
My son's and I have honda mowers. I mow 3 to 4 yards in South Florida. No problems either with my son's or mine. When I first mowed, one of my nephews had an electric. It was light and quiet. But charging was an issue. Since my yard owners only want biweekly mowing, the electric had problems with mowing to height. The battery died midway through a 3 hour cut. The Honda does whatever I ask it to do.
The honda mowers are far and away the best for the money if you stay in the lower models. The replacement GCV engines are cheap and the deck design is fantastic for mulching - plus the engines are timed correctly and actually start easily. Even after a decade and a half on mine.
I think a lot of able bodied battery mower purchasers are missing the boat and should be mowing with a reel until the battery mowers are better. A good reel costs $130 and needs to be adjusted and honed about once a year at most. You do have to mow a little more often with them, but one pass with a scotts classic is faster than one pass with a rotary mower, so it almost balances out. Your neighbor can have a conversation next to the fence while you're mowing, too, and the only thing you'll hear is "we love your mower - we can still talk to each other while you're mowing".
The electric mower target audience is home owners. If you're mowing multiple yards or doing 3 hour jobs then I'd stick with gas. But for most of the lawns around here, especially for women, the electric are hands down better.
I had a Honda HRX217...it lasted 6 months in my commercial mowing operation. Engine governor blew and the trans seal went out. I took a gamble and replaced it with an EGO. I’ll never go back. The EGO has been flawless, cuts beautifully and is so light I can throw it in the back of the truck along with a trimmer (Ego) and a blower for small yards and not have to take the big trailer. I’m adding the newest dual blade version to the fleet.
And much quieter for the clients!
Good to know. I have a honda and it seems every year i have to buy a new lawnmower in the spring. I didn't realize you had to winterize them. New to this. Well, i like the ones with the start key and they were out so i have an ego coming Wednesday. I bought a spare battery. At $355, i probably should have bought the trimmer instead. I like the idea of the lighter weight going up slopes. We will see what happens. Will probably end up buying another honda too
@@douglasvilledarling2935 You are using the ego for commercial work? Nice! I'm not a professional, but I'm curious about your battery rotation and how all that works out. I'm just getting into ego products and absolutely love them so far, but haven't pulled the trigger on buying their dual blade lawn mower just yet.
Nice review. I have the Ego self propelled, and love it. I mow Bermuda and St. Augustine twice a week, it really does leave a carpet like finish on the Bermuda. You pretty much nailed it, both mowers are top of the line in there respective categories (gas powered and battery powered).
+bando v'real I had someone ask me about bermuda and I wasnt sure how it would handle it.. thanks for posting!
bando v'real I have the original EGO 20". It gets bogged down in my thick grass so I have to bag it. For. 1/3 acre that takes me 2 hours and about 6-9 bags of grass. So I had to buy the Honda and do a hybrid mulch and bag. Better results. I'm curious how the newest EGO compares with more power?
I suspect the standard blade on the EGO is a compromise since they want it be able to bag, mulch and maybe side discharge. Would a dedicated mulching blade make much of a difference in performance?
I have a 22 yo Honda HR216 and cut zoysia. I would love to go to electric. This video was useful to make a head to head comparison of Honda gas to Ego electric.
Thanks!
I had a WORX mower for 8 years and just switched to a Honda gas mower. I noticed the power gradually weaken with the battery powered mower after 5 years. But by then, the battery powered mower had paid for itself because I lived in Hawaii then San Diego, where gas was so expensive. I did love the ease of use and virtually zero maintenance. I am now enjoying the gas powered one but am worried I won’t keep up with the maintenance.
Nice! I just got a Worx to review!
Yea, my WORX got very sad. Didn’t hold a charge that well the 5th-8th year. The price of the battery deterred me from getting a replacement.
Does anyone have any experience on shredding leaves in the fall with an Ego vs a gas powered Honda?
I lay them in a shallow pile and run over them 3 or 4 times then put another layer and repeat it. It works well but I'm worried an electric is not going to mulch as well.
I have huge amounts of leaves so it really matters how fast and well it does it.
When I become a homeowner, I would grab a cordless electric mower from my HD. No gas, no fumes, and no worries. I would blare some ODESZA and other relaxing electronic music from a Milwaukee M18/M12 jobsite speaker while using my electric mower.
I hope you have a great night and I love your video and I love your blog
I have two mowers that I use. First is the best. Ego 21 inch self propelled. I’ve had it two years now. Quiet, don’t need hearing protectors, no fumes, no handling gasoline and oil.. One charge handles both 75 x100 foot lots easily.
The other mower is a Fiskers 18 inch push reel mower that I use frequently until I get tired, then Ego comes out. Mostly the Fiskers is an exercise machine for my 78 year old body. Talk of quiet! Fiskers with no power is quieter than Ego. But I am very satisfied with the Ego.
I don't like the sound of a vacuum cleaner coming out of my mower. Plus, I like the fumes because I'm a savage. However, if I was going to go battery, EGO would be my choice. Great video bro.
The Lawn Care Nut thanks! its a weird experience for sure so quiet you think its not doing anything
What's up, LCN.
I'm sure all Ego mower owners can attest to this. You're out mowing and someone is walking by. They are about 75 feet or so away from you and they see you mowing and you see them slowly approaching you and staring the whole time. Finally they get closer and they stop to talk and they tell you that they were wondering what was going on. From what they saw, it looked as if you were cutting grass but they were amazed that they didn't actually hear the mower going as they expected to. It's great being able to actually hear birds chirp while cutting grass.
I agree it;s neat, but I've yet to see an electric mower that can make it through thick St Augustine without killing the guy or gal pushing it. When and if they come out with a battery mower that doesn't force me to sacrifice my comfort in mowing with a combustion engine (including the power to easily self propel) I will not be moved. Mowing is therapy to me - I don't want it to feel like work.
I hear ya. You're still a gas person. I know that battery power still has yet to prove it's worth to many. My lawn is mainly TTTF and that's not as hard to get a good finish on like St. Augustine. My Ego isn't self propelled and I've just gotten used to providing the horsepower myself at this point. It's better for the ole waistline. When i'm out cutting my lawn, which has huge hill on one side, IT MOST DEFINITELY IS WORK.
The Lawn Care Nut the 21" self propel model has a more powerful motor and the variable speed transmission works like a champ. I just wish my striper wasn't so darn hard to keep attached on the odd shaped handles.
I’ve had my EGO self propelled for about 6 months now, going from a gas mower I can tell you know I don’t suffer from my usual asthma problems anymore, you mentioned in your video your asthma was acting up on that day.
Please try out the self propelled version and I’m sure you won’t go back to the Honda :)
Love your vids !
Thanks! Actually my asthma is from lyme disease. Check for ticks! I'm not even in a woodsie area and got it 😐
My grass is very healthy and thick. I mulch so my concern is cut quality with electric mowers.
Great videos. I have the Ego mower and I like it a lot that is probably the only thing I dislike. The mower cuts from 1 1/2 inches to 4 inches with a half-inch change on each notch.
Yep, that makes sense if the 4 setting is 3 inches (out of 6 settings).
LOVE me EGO...buying the newest one this spring and giving my old one to the inlaws.
nice! let me know what you think comparing the two
Wow so quiet! The first video that someone finally showed what it actually sounded like without the audio leveling! Thank you. Now I feel I want to buy it. I often wonder if I'm disturbing my neighbors when I mow. My gas Honda mower is loud and I have so much yard that it takes forever, mostly because my Honda is so heavy, bulky and difficult to maneuver.
Yeah they keep getting better each year. I tried the Worx one as well and it was very similar to the Ego. Very quiet, light weight, easy to use.
The 2020 version with the double blades and they moved the self propel!
Plus the newer battery. 7.5 battery!
I just got a Stihl electric mower. The self propelled version, and I love it.
It actually does a better job than my old Briggs and Stratton gas mower.
EGO owner also. It looked like Grass Daddy was a bit biased to begin with. Watch the expressions of apathy he has toward the electric. I bag with my EGO and send the clippings to a yard waste recycling. I have no issues with left over lawn. I used the mower to collect leaves and it also did an awesome job.
+Richard Miller it is close but not there yet for mulching, and I exclusively mulch mow ;)
Is the electric mower really that much quieter? They both sound pretty loud on video
I am a fan of electric mowers. I got tired of oil , gas, filters, fuel stabilizer etc.
Yes - I'm struggling to get one of my gas engines to start right now...
@@GrassDaddy get rid of it and go green.
@@crazyamericangamer7036 Except there is nothing green about it. Read about how they make that battery.
Would this work for a landscaper ? My thing is the charge. Dnt think it will last long enough and it might take longer for it to charge. I like the idea of not dealing with gas and such things . Which is why i hesitate to switch. Is it worth it in the long run ? Battery cells die after every charge . Is it going to cost much more afterwards?
For landscapers no way, not there yet. Landscapers would need a bank of batteries and they'd get wicked hot in the trailer
That makes sense
How not to tighten the blade bolt. By placing the wood on an angle, it exerts pressure on the blade. Enough pressure will bend the blade.
Going on year three the ego is great I have self propelled it speeds up in hi grass . I also have weed walker blade anger stick badge trimmer I used gas my whole life I would never go back!
2 blade vs 1? Damn, Ego is amazing. Maybe EGO should add a 2 blade system. Probably eats up battery though.
Too big of a drain - they're already scraping for power and can't afford to beat the clippings around more than they need to. The honda mowers are masters of keeping the clippings up in the deck and dropping them as tiny bits without getting too bogged down in the process. Functional horsepower is probably at least 3 times that of the battery mowers when you need to draw on it.
That'll change over time, though. Battery mowers are way ahead of where they were 6 or 8 years ago, and I'll bet in another 6 or 8, they'll be a match on small yards.
EGO just launched a two blade version called Select Cut in December 2019. You can buy it at Home Depot now for $650.
They have one now: the 2135, dual blade with 7.5 amp/h battery.
@@daw162 looky there who has a 2 blade now. This aged like fine wine
1 blade vs. 2 blades. Going to see a difference just right there. great video
I've owned the Ego self propelled mower now for two years and I will never go back to gas again. It folds up to the size of a suitcase, when folded I can easily carry it with the front handle and store it in the house (no gas no oil), you can lay it on it's side and you don't have to worry about oil and gas leaking out, it starts every time with the push of a button, it's light so it makes mowing around objects very easy, it has headlights so I can mow at night when it's nice and cool and it's so quite it doesn't bother the neighbors at all, and I don't have to wear earplugs when mowing. If you are thinking about buying one you will be happy you did.
I've owned and used both mowers, side-by-side for a LONG time. I have a Marathon Kentucky Bluegrass lawn, with one area of St. Augustine. There's no way the EGO cuts either type of grass as well as the Honda. BUT, that being said, the SIMPLICITY and CONVENIENCE of the EGO product won me over. It is well-built, and super-easy to use. The single battery and charger can be used with their entire line of yard care tools. I sold the Honda to a neighbor. He's happy with an excellent used gas mower, and I'm happy with my EGO cordless electric.
I bought my ego a year ago and for the most part I do like it. There are several smart things about the design etc. I have a couple rentals where I transport the mower and the way it folds up and is light weight is really nice. I think your review is fairly accurate. The biggest issue I have with the ego is when in thick heavy grass it does come up somewhat short. The power band is slow to kick up to a higher speed in heavy grass and too quick to power back down. For example if you hit heavy grass it takes a few seconds to power up, and if you come to the end of a run and want to turn around, it has already powered back down. It won't hold that higher power level thru a turn. I cut my grass shorter than you do in the video so that challenges the power too a bit. Good advice on buying a self propelled. I did and it's worth it.
There is a blade height measuring device, made of plastic, available in all hardware and big box stores that you place the mower on a flat surface, slide the measuring device tip under the blade and raise the tip to the bottom or the blade and read the blade height on the measuring device. Costs about $7. Good thing tho have.
It's on my list of something to get at some point if I can remember =P
Would it have cut the same of it had 2 blades as the Honda?
You should check out the new model 60 plus minutes run time and dual blade also comes with an extra blade in the box that's better for mulching (uses up a bit more power though) from the reviews I watched the only gas mower that beats it on cut performance is the Honda or commercial mowers. I just bought mine today so hopefully when I get to use it ill see if it lives up to the hype so far the build quality is excellent though
Yes I've heard about them I gotta get my hands on one!
I like that you sharpened the blade and measured the cut height, to give a FAIR comparison. well done. That you cut next to each other +++, it is an impartial assessment. good. Questions: how ling did the EGO cut for? I have 300m2 of similar grass to cut.
I bought a DEWALT 18v X 2 mower the DCMW564T2-TE and it died after cutting just 225m2 while showing 2 bars on the batteries. Very unhappy with that so returned it. Now I am searching for a GOOD cordless mower. (the Dewalt build is nice quality, the wheels roll well, everything about the mower is good except the batteries are a FAIL.) cheers
Would prefer to see a low cut or long grass. But a good comparison on short grass thanks
Thanks for your time brother; but, if you need to come to south Louisiana and try cutting some manly St. Augustine for a real test. Honda makes a great mower if I had to buy a walk behind it would be a Honda!!!
In my area, the grass is very spongy and the ego bogs down so easily that if we were able to return it, we probably would
Where is the EGO manufactured?
What I concern once to replace the battery that would be very costly almost 2/3 of the mowe or more. No doubt about Ego is very quiet to the gas mower and maintenance free. I am still favorite to gas mower. Honda 217 is my best choice, newer model in the market with some good features. Please comment!
I still would take gas all day long, because when you need to do it again all you do is fill the gas tank up and you’re good to go. Sure with the electric you could swap the battery out but I still don’t like how they are. And you’re totally right about the price. How do you carburetor on average would cost about 15 bucks? @@H2inthehtx Your old school, today most people can not fix anything and do not want to, so they end up paying a lot on maintenance - over $100 to solve fuel system issues that can be fix with an $8 carburetor + time. I have had ego tools for years with no maintenance cost. I ego tools are also so quite that they do not damage my hearing witch is worth more than money can buy. Saving your hearing alone is one of the best reasons to go to battery power tools
22 Years on my mower, changed blades once and that was before I just started to angle grind them once a year to sharpen, oil changed twice now, park plugs twice, and filter first time. Winterize!!! I put it away and I bring it back out in spring...has worked for 22 years. Looking at reviews for new mowers as it's starting to show age..last 5 years I been running it on premix because I have a dirt bike and I'm lazy and don't want to store two types of fuel...LOL I hate to say it how long will a battery really last? Maybe 5 years! That is my only concern with electric.
It depends on the type and quality of the battery cells. I've been using A123 lifepo4 cells for the last 6 years and over a thousand cycles on them (that would equate to 10,000 lawn cuts. It has only lost about 10% capacity since then and it is still very powerful. Now, all these cordless tool packs are using a higher energy density cell, which should be good for 600-1000 cycles before dropping below 80% capacity. If you treat batteries properly (don't store at full charge or charge them when hot, or let drop below 20% charge level), they will last more than most people expect.
From other reviews with the self propelled EGO. They say that it’s able to propel itself with out the main motor spinning. So there are two motors. One for the blade and one for the wheels.
And with respect. When you compared the clippings between the two mowers. It was basically apple to oranges. Because it was two blades vs one blade. Had nothing to do with the power from the engine or motor.
+Robert Steich doesnt matter how many blades, its comparing results ;)
Grass Daddy you mentioned both in the same sentence as if the motor and engine was what made the difference between clippings. Besides, was the mulching blockage thing in its spot on the EGO? It’s possible that it wasn’t and that could’ve skewed the results.
Still, you have to admit the ability of the self propelled EGO without the blade motor running is awesome. Especially to move the mower back to it’s parking spot.
The ability to move the mower without the blade running has been true of the two different brand cordless mowers I've owned previously and I agree with you it's a nice feature.
Thanks for the video was wondering how electric stands next to gas mower.
thanks for watching!
i still use my 1986 honda HR214, and i dont think i'll be upgrading anytime soon :P
Here in the subtropics, on the east coast of Australia, if I where to mow my grass down to 3 inches high I’d have to mow it again the next day!
When I mow our lawn (couch grass) it down to about 1” and still needs mowing again after about 5 days at the peak of summer.
I also work in a hardware store here in OZ, where we sell the full range of EGO power plus range, and more and more of our customers are switching to the EGO 56V battery powered garden care range and 99% of the customers are very impressed with their EGO purchase(s)
I personally own a EGO blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw and line trimmer and can’t fault them, especially as the wife loves her garden and loves how easy they are to just pick up a go with them. Worth every dollar for a “Happy Wife - Happy Life! “ 😄
Only reason I don’t have an EGO lawnmower is that our petrol mower is only about 3 years old, but I wouldn’t hesitate a second, if I where in the market for a new lawnmower, to buy an EGO lawnmower. Especially with the 5 year warranty on the mower itself and 3 year warranty on the battery and charger.
Put the mulching blade in it then compare. The Honda has mulching blades where as that ego blade is the standard one
They have two blades, the regular and a high lift for bagging. I was using the regular in this video.
4:03 love that single lever height adjustment that puts that 4th wheel off the ground on a level surface... too much plastic... snapper is going strong after 12 years.. thanks for the video
With all the advances in technology why has none designed a spindle lock for changing mower blades?
I just bought the Honda twin blade Hrr216vka which is probably just under the model you tested. We've been having a lot of rain in MA in May and my grass was 15 inches and thick. My Honda mulched it great. of course with the grass that high it left some grass clumps about 2 inches wide. The grass was wet at the bottom. Cutting height on the mower was set at 4 inches. No way the EGO or any battery powered mower does this. I'll take my honda self propelled mower any day. Filling the gas tank and changing the oit is no problem. I'm old school 64 and remember when the mower I used just was a basic push mower with a rope you used to pull start it. You would have to wrap the rope around the engine yourself. Until the batteries last longer and come down in price, it's a gas mower any day.
Great point! I definitely prefer the Honda but my friend still swears by his Ego. Then again his yard is the size of my driveway lol
To me it seems more like the the mulch improvement for the Honda has more to do with the extra blade and not more power. I would be curious to see if there are any twin blade electric mowers, if that one will take the twin blades, and if it makes a difference.
I have craftsman 7.5ah mower and honda high end. The cordless one isnt ast great as ego but i can attest woyh you a few things: you never get completely one or the other. The ego is good for light cut, small yard with regular schedule. I have a vacation house. Every time i stop by the grass is around 24 inches high and thick too. The honda will handle well and hard but throw any cordless on in will be suck! I stopped due to the thickness of the grass (and wet). However. If i stop by regularly then my craftsman mower works fine. It is lighter and less noisy but it is not heavy duty! Well. A down side of gasoline one is you have to maintain well or it wont fire up!
Bottom line: get what you need. Lots of guy praised the ego very well. Even the professionals are biasing in their review too. Also keep in mind that is expensive to keep batteried mower. It will change and die out over time. I have to stop several times because the battery could not keep up
The pros use gas mowers for a reason. They are powerful and work better. Electric is good if you live in the city and have a small patch of grass to cut.
There are pros that use electric. They even have electric robot mowers the size of cars ;)
@@GrassDaddy Yea I've seen a few use electric.very rare. As big as cars. Hahahahaha . Haven't seen that.
IMO, It also depends upon lawn size. Ours is not as large as yours and it takes no time to cut. In fact, I think I can mow our lawn twice before even recharging the battery. I should probably use a push mower. Maybe that'll be next if this one ever craps out.
Can you do a blower/trimmer comparison with gas vs electric too?
DaBantot4 yessir!
Totally unrelated to the purpose of your video.. BUT what grit are you using on your angle grinder to sharpen the blades?
Nope, not unrelated at all, a totally valid question!
You have any idea how long this thing will stay charged?
One hour fully charged.
@@jonathangomez8539 that's a deal breaker for me right there.... it takes me longer than that to cut my lawn... and that's with a 22" mower
If you have a large yard than yes you would either need to wait and charge it or have a second battery. I have had it for over a month and had no issues. Only negatives is the self propelled handle is kinda flimsy and is in an awkward spot. The other is that the mower is so light that you might pull back on it while it cuts giving you uneven cuts. But that one is just while you adjust.
So for larger lawns you'll want to look at a "system". If you have the trimmer, blower, mower, chainsaw, etc and they all come with a battery then you can easily rotate batteries whlie you go. I have the full Craftsman line and now I've got 5 batteries so it would last quite a while.
@@GrassDaddy Well yes and no, I have the trimmer and mower however the trimmer has a smaller capacity battery which is about half the power of the normal mower battery.
I love the Ego best lawn mower I've bought. I can cut my yard 3 times on one charge.
You must have a small yard. I have to switch batteries 70% in.
@@lijie6431 you should look into the 2142. Single blade but 2 batteries. Comes with 10amp (80min runtime), but if you have 7.5 amp batteries it will take it for 15amp/h total.
Did you instal the Ego Mulching insert before mowing?
key point
I find I want to mow really early and don't because of the noise. I'm leaning towards this now.
Good call. I could mow right now at 7am with electric and nobody would care.
I prefer mowing in the evenings, when the grass is as dry as possible. The morning dew makes the grass wet, and it tends to clog the chute leading to the grass catcher bag.(I always catch). Bagging the grass uses less motor power, and will increase the area of grass you can mow on a single charge. It doesn't make nearly as much difference for gas mowers. Catching also reduces the buildup of thatch.
The Honda was the best mower I ever bought, but I would buy the ego next time just to forgo the gas trips.
I could listen to grinder in fast motion all day
No, the meeh Sun Jole you can mow all night but this one sounds fairly loud compared to it. That said I buy based on power. ... time is money.
Have you tried the new Steel Deck Ego model? Supposed to be much better but I've yet to see a video done on it yet.
I haven't, would be fun to try out!
Went to Home Depot to get the electric start Honda mower ($499) and ended up with the Ego Self Propelled mower ($549). It's quieter but not that quiet so wear ear protectors. It's light but not that light. Spend $100 more and get self propelled. I like the Ego but here is why I am considering taking it back in the 90 day return HD period. At times it would scalp a donut with a green center in my Bermuda grass here and there. I figured out why. It's lighter therefore it is more prone to bouncing over rougher terrain causing the donuts. Also if you turn the mower on it's rear wheels and let it down too hard it will again bounce and scalp a donut in the yard. My yard being new has more than it's share of rough terrain. Also if you miss a mowing or two and the grass is thicker and longer, it will suck the juice right out of that battery that lasted the whole yard last time you cut it adding a couple of more rechargings for an additional two hours in yard time. So, I like the convenience BUT what to do? What to do?
if you aren't happy with it, go back for the Honda! it's nice that they have the 90 return period. some people love the Ego and some people don't, seems it's more a user preference or "local conditions" than anything.
Love it bro , I love the ego we have one and use it here and there when needed
The warranty is pretty great. Only bad thing was it took ego 5 weeks to get it back to me.
It's impossible to install the EGO Mower Blade upside down as it will only be installed one way only because of the shape of the blade itself. Can't make this mistake.
The problem with the EGO is the price of the battery replacement, it is 50% and more of the mower itself.
Yikes! I didn't realize it was that much!
This isn't entirely a fair statement however. While the battery isn't the "motor/engine" in a sense it kind of is. The engine on the mower is the bulk of the cost. To the point that if it goes bad, you buy a new mower. You also can't take that motor and put it in your trimmer or blower. With electric, your motor is lower cost and generally more reliable, so the battery is the bulk of the cost, but you can then buy the other tools at a lower cost without the included battery, and swap between. And when the battery goes bad or wears out, you don't have to buy a whole new mower.
And . . . . . Worth every penny.
claude lachapelle I realize this is an older comment. I am just getting into the Ego line of products. I just ordered a lawn mower, trimmer (power head model with changeable heads), and backpack leaf blower. I plan on getting additional heads for my power head, a trimmer, chainsaw, and a snow blower to fill the void from when I want to use my big two stage unit.
I agree batteries can wear down with use and age. I have watched several videos where people take the batteries apart and test individual cells. I am slowly purchasing my tools so that I get enough batteries and my purchase are spread out. Once I get enough batteries for my need, I can purchase tools without the batteries which greatly reduces their cost. Battery life is not too hard of a problem to work around. I also know extra battery parts can be purchased on sites eBay. There is also a battery replacement/repair shop close to my house. I would have to ask them if they would rebuild these batteries. If they could, I am sure there are other places that can as well.
All of the videos I saw where people disassembled Ego batteries the people said they were built really well. If I was going to get any battery operated tools, it would be the Ego line just because of the build quality of their batteries (heart of the devices). Heat is the enemy of lithium ion batteries. Ego has their batteries well ventilated (all the slots on battery compartment) so that they remain cooler as an effort to help them last longer. It is also a reason they have fans on their chargers. Ego went further than that though. They added a chemical wrap around each cell. The chemical wrap is also supposed to absorb heat from the cell during use and charging. That chemical is a solid but converts to a liquid when it gets hot BTW. Ego also spaced their cells apart better than other comparable battery units which allows the cell to dissipate heat better. The electronics in the battery are also sealed against moisture unlike some other manufactures. The wires Ego uses in their batteries are also more substantial than a few other battery makers I have seen (less heat of resistance build up). From videos I have see, Ego definitely makes the best batteries and implements the best protection to help make them last.
Jeffrey Obadal I just saw that Ego came out with new batteries. They have a true battery strength indicator now. I wish the tools had a battery life indicator like the mower or snowblower which would be visible during use. I also imagine battery prices will eventually come down. Currently, most of the price is due to the technology, and I believe a price drop will occur when they become more mainstream.
Waiting for milwaukee to start making a mower!
You and me both bro! Milwaukee fan and owner to the extreme!
Me too
I gave up on gas engine lawn equipment 10 years ago. No oil, no taking spent oil to a recycle place, no gas, no spark plugs, no air or oil filters, no pulling a cord to start. The EGO does and equally good job as a gas mower. The electric equipment is quiet.
I have an EGO self-propelled mower and 15" EGO trimmer (for 2-3 foot tall weeds on our slope), a B&D 40V blower and vacuum, a 6" chain saw, 10" chain pole saw, a B&D trimmer, a B&D hedge trimmer, a pole hedge trimmer, all battery powered. I have only one AC powered tool which is a leaf blower/vacuum that I use in the fall for leaves. Otherwise the battery powered blower does the job the rest of the year.
For me it's a no brainier. Battery electric is my choice and I'll never go back to gas.
I'd keep the Honda
Yeah me too, the electric is nice for a certain market but I'm in the gotta have my twin blade gas powered Honda ;-)
@ even then they have commercial electric zero turns now!
Excellent video, thank you. One of my neighbors has the EGO, another has the Lowe’s Kobalt; both said they should have long ago gone battery. At the end of last season, 2018, my gas mower took a dirt nap thus I went with RYOBI 40V self propelled. Now I completely agree with my neighbors, battery is the way to go. Comparing cut quality these three appear the same. Battery runtime seems to be the difference. Each mower have their special features that may make one purchase one over the other.
It is really cool how many options there are out there now, and from what I hear everyone is happy no matter the brand!
OK, here is my review. I purchased that mower few weeks ago. I have Bermuda grass lawn, if I mow on the 3rd position it can cut the grass well thought quality of cut is very uneven (one side is higher) so I have to do an overlapping all the time. If I try to lower the setting to the 2nd position it bogs down and scalps the grass. It can't mulch. Suction is sucks. What else... The battery seems to have enough capacity to mow for an hour or so. That's it. For $600 is not what I would expect.
edit: sorry I have another model, I have 21 self-propelled.
This is why I bought a Toro Super Recycler instead of The Ego and it cost me $499.00. It's one of the best mulching mowers one can buy, self propelled and has a aluminum deck that never seems to clog up even when cutting wet grass. The build quality is excellent and I expect this mower will easily last 10 years if not longer without any problems.
My victa is 31 years old , starts first time ,
