I love these side by side comparisons. Can't really go wrong with either of these mowers.
Really can’t! Appreciate the feedback Smallblock! Have an awesome weekend bud!
Hey GarageGear, love your channel! I've watched many of your videos. I have a dilemma, I've been researching quite a while now on lawn mowers and have been trying to find one that isn't self propelled (For a summer mowing business). I came across the Honda HRN216PKA, but people claim that the PKA models and some of the HRN series mowers miss spots and leave patches in the grass. Do you have any recommendations? Should I look for a different mower or what do you think about the PKA? (I'm not looking for a self propelled because my father said it requires more maintenance and is very annoying when it breaks down, but after watching your HRN216VKA videos, I doubt it, what do you think?)
Does the HRX have the same plastic camshaft?
Thanks for all of the great videos. I own an 11-year old Husqvarna HU800 AWD (with Honda motor). Been going through it replacing parts. Got new wheels, dust covers, need a new blade adaptor as nipple star ring shattered when I went to sharpen the blade. It needs a new belt which is a job I am not looking forward to as the mower is at the age such that when you take things apart they do not want to go back together. Watched your video about the last of the Honda mowers. Thought about it a lot and headed off to Home Depot early this morning to snap up a Honda HRN for less than $600 on sale. Just put it together based on your specs. It's a nice mower. It could be more heavy duty but I can't complain at the price. And it's the last of the Honda mowers so get 'em while you can. I checked for the green dot based on your video. Much appreciated. Celebrated by buying a Garage Gear tee shirt. I enjoy your content as it is educational, on point and isn't pandering to the algorithm with a bikini clad sidekick. I like my lawn. neat and tidy. Not as fancy as yours but it's ship shape. I do struggle with when to let go of an older piece of lawn equipment. I may be guilty of putting money into them at the end of its life but after 11 years the Husqvarna doesn't owe me anything and there is a lot to be learned from a veteran mower.
You got it Joseph! Some mowers can be a lot of work as they age. Enjoy your new mower! Appreciate your kind words and thank you for supporting the channel! 👍
I love my used HRX 190 cc i got last year.....
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Awesome video. Love my HRX. Should be good for a while
Oh yeah. Enjoy the mow this season.
I absolutely love the detail you go into without wasting time. your reviews are so streamlined and well made. thank you!!
Hey Tom! I like giving the viewer what they came to see. Thanks for being a cool fan 👍
I love my older HRX
Awesome mower! 👍
Do you need to look for the recall stickers on the HRX 200cc model?
Yes you do! 👍
The self propel recently went out in my old mid 1990s Honda HR 215. During my searching I saw Honda push mowers were on sale at the Home Depot during Memorial Day weekend. So I went with the HRX217HYA. Just waiting for it to arrive to the store so I can pick it up. Hoping to get a good few decades of mowing out oof it.
Awesome enjoy the mow josh
I've had my HRX 217 for over 12 years now, and it's still going strong.
The only issues I had with this model initially, was starting. I opted for the electric/key start feature.
This turned out to be a no-go. After experiencing failures of the electric start and/or the pull start to work and exchanging the mower for another one, ( several times through the Home Depot I purchased the first mower at, plus having the starter worked on by a local Honda outdoor shop, ) I resigned myself to the fact that at least electric start was not in the cards for me. I had a mower with everything else working great on it, so I stuck with that.
I eventually discovered another local shop that specialized in lawn equipment and was an authorized Honda service center. They've been really great all these years for servicing my Honda.
Despite the initial headaches I had with my Honda mower, I wouldn't choose any other brand.
Thanks for sharing! This is good to know and helpful for others contemplating buying a Honda.
I have the key start, I find myself having to pull the string more often than turn the key to start. you really have to charge the battery to use the key
I’m really leaning on getting one of these mower’s pretty soon.
Grab one my friend! You won’t be disappointed
@@GarageGear As of today, it looks like I’ll definitely be doing some lawn mower shopping being my craftsman 6.0 mower deck is all rusted to hell.
Wow awesome video ! I was litterly just going to make this same video on both mowers.
Haha wow! Crazy! You make it I’ll check it out! 👍👍
This is great...I was just looking at both of these models. Probably going to go with the HRX. Hope it lasts a decent number of years
@@kellrockets101 I got the HRN. Showed my brother in law and mowed his grass with it. He bought the HRX a couple days later !!
Considering the new Stihl 655 or 756. Do you have any experience with those yet? Thanks
Not yet! Would like to get my paws on one
I have both mowers and the both leaked oil from the valve cover. I had to pull both out, clean up the old sealant and put new gasket maker on both to stop the leak
Appreciate you sharing this with the community MV
I bought my HRX in 2008 and it starts and mows just as good as it did when new.
Can’t beat em!
The thing about a lot of plastics is, that over the years they can become very brittle. I don't know about that type of plastic, but case in point...I grabbed an old funnel yesterday to pour some cleaner from a bottle with a bad sprayer to a new bottle and when I grabbed the funnel it split on one side and completely broke off where I had grabbed ahold of it. In the trash it went, lol. On the other hand, I have two more just as old but they're both still flexible and pliable. Steel may rust, but it takes a really long time to rust through a good deck. That old push mower I told ya about that I bought back in 2000 was stored outside under a wood deck its first ten years as at the old place we didn't even have a shed...it did eventually rust through but it took about 20 years before it was even noticeable.
I had a 25 year old hrx. The motor burned oil, the bearing were shot in the wheels. It had a 3 speed trans that finally gave up. The plastic portion of the deck must be some sort of uhmw. It was good for another 25 years.
Thanks for sharing as always rebel!
My stihl 024 av 25 years old no problems lots of plastic. My 2018 HRX motor blew up after 3 years don't have to worry about the plastic Honda is not like they use to be.
The Bag Mulch Lever can be Difficult to move if you have Dried Grass under the Deck
True! Best to keep it clean
Seeing as they are rear wheel drive what do you do when making a turn ? On my front wheel drive mower I lift the wheels off the ground and then make the turn or the wheels chew up the grass.
Hey James! When you approach the turn, you let go of the smart drive handle and the wheels stop. You then make your turn and hit the smart drive again. Think of it like your gas pedal. Brake into a turn gas out of a turn!
Can you put the mulch and bag half way on the hrn?
Not on the HRN! Only on the HRX
Both have exactly the same blade systems so both cut grass awesomely.
Only important features HRX has over the HRN is incrementally adjustable bag/mulch lever rather than only one or other and better quality wheels. It does have a bigger engine, but both engines are great for normal yards so I don’t think its a massively noticeable difference unless your mowing long lawns all the time.
On the other hand its heavier, its harder to pull backwards due to its drive system design, has plastic deck, has corner adjusters for height which are more annoying and a weird round knob to adjust speed so no feathering the speed controller when manoeuvring like you can in the cheaper model.
Both are great machines but I dont see the extra cost justified with the HRX and prefer the HRN. Thats just me though.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Like you, I have the HRN and it works just fine.
I have both mowers which are very reliable for sure. I like the hrn for the light weight. You can't go wrong with a honda.
is that turtle wax ceramic spray I see on the work bench? That's what I use on my stuff....
Hey Don! Yep a friend gave it to me! Use it to shine up some equipment!
HRN is the best lawnmower I ever own !!!
Thanks for sharing dewayne!
Love my Honda HRN216 VYAA
Thanks for sharing bryan
Thanks for the info!!
You got it my friend!
I just purchased the HRX217HYA at my local Honda Powersports dealer. They matched the Home Depot sale price of $799 mentioned in another comment. I based my decision off of many reviews including yours and also the fact that it is the only decent mower left with a blade brake clutch.
I used it for the first time today in a 50/50 mulch/bag configuration. Nice clean cut and the hydrostatic is smooth. Loved being able to empty the bag and not have to restart the mower yet still do it safely as the blade is stopped.
The only issue I have is that the valve cover has a small oil leak. It might not have been sealed properly when the cam issue was fixed. I also think the blade doesn’t stop fast enough, but not having used one before, I have no point of reference.
I will now be cleaning up my John Deere JS40 that has served me well for 18 years and will be selling it. It’s time for someone else to enjoy it.
Use the warranty while you have it they will fix it at no cost
@@ivanguzman9156 I will be contacting the dealer after the holiday. I will bring it in for them to repair, or, if Honda will be so willing, they can just set me up with a tube of Hondabond and a service manual. I’ve been working on small engines since I was 9 or 10.
Hey Bobby I would have them look at it under warranty
I just bought my first single family home with about a 1/4 acre. I went with the HRX217!! Amazing mower. First time in eight years I’ve had to cut grass since leaving my parents home. 😅
ROCK ON my friend! Enjoy the mow!
@@GarageGear Thank you!
I needed a mower since my Honda 216 was at the end of its life thanks to me neglecting cleaning the underside of the deck after 15 years or so. Sad to see Honda throwing in the towel here in the states. I debated getting a hrn from HD but I opted to shop small and I got a Toro Recycler MAX. The Toro is certainly no Honda but as long as it lasts for 10 or so years I’ll be happy. I’ll be cleaning the deck every cutting that’s for sure.
Thanks for sharing lj!
Wish they made a 22inch version like Toro.
That would be nice!
I bought the HRX last week after watching your video comparing it against the Toro Super Recycler. I was torn, but ultimately you were the deciding factor, thanks JB!
Glad I could help you out Rick! 👍
Do you still recommend the graphite spray for the plastic deck of the HRX?
It’s worth a shot!
@@GarageGear Thank you. Watching this, I have gone and purchased the HRX217 from HD. SO far your recommendations for Snow Blower (Ariens 24" deluxe) and Generator (Harbor Freight Predator 4000) have not let me down. I have learned a lot for upkeep of my equipment from your videos, Thank you.
@@Gregwing ROCK ON Greg! Glad these videos are helping you out!
Are the wheels interchangeable from the HRX to the HRN?
As far as I know no. They would throw off the height of cut too if that is important to you
I have 2 HRX models which I use commercially. The 200 cc engine is unstoppable, no comparison. I have cut grass 4 feet high, that is the truth. I set it at the highest setting and the slowest pace. It is incredible how it chews it up and don't bog out. After the 4" cut, I run over it again to clean it up. My HRX has the same transmission as the snowblower. It is incredible. It can crawl at a snail pace or you can trot to keep up.
The only thing I noticed, that you didn't mention was the valve cover on the HRX. Both of mine started to weep oil in a very short period, the ES model lost the spring that holds the forward motion handle in place. The 3rd thing was the speed cable had to be adjusted as it had slowed down quite a bit.
It is currently June 1, 2024 in Newfoundland Canada. It has been raining for almost 2 months straight. The HRX completely packed the grass bag full and then some. The grass was very heavy.
The forward motion lever is completely different on the models that I have than the one in the video.
The HRX is an absolute beast of a mower. I wouldn't part with it. It is heavy having to haul it backward up a hill.
I purchased these Honda mowers to replace the AWD Toro models. I can honestly say 100%, Toro does not come close to the quality of the Honda HRX. 10 inches of damp grass and you will be lucky to fill the bag 1/3rd, if you can keep it from stalling out.
Love the videos, I always check to see if you have a review or maintenance tips of any lawn products I purchase.
I am on the south west corner of Canada in BC and you ate right on all points...!
I had to learn to pick up the bag with 2 hands when it's full of wet grass.
Appreciate you sharing your experience with the community my friend! Good Info for people to see!
I love my HRN216. JB would you consider doing a quick tutorial for a general tune up. Oil change and blade sharpening no problem. Carb stuff, I have no idea. Thanks Dan 🇨🇦
That’s a good idea! Thanks for sharing this! I’ll add it to the list.
I saw your video on treating the mower with slip plate. I may purchase the hrx. Does the hrx nexite deck need treatment for grass buildup? Thanks
Every mower can benefit from it. Thanks for watching!
Great videos!
So I have been researching new mowers for awhile now, to replace an older one that I am just not interested in spending more money on to get back to solid working condition. The Toro 21462 22" is a strong candidate, and so is the Honda HRN model in your video. In your opinion, what would your recommend? I have reservations about buying the Honda due to them pulling out of the US market. I would hate to be at a point where either parts aren't readily available or the tail end of my warranty is in jeopardy. But I love what the Honda offers, especially hearing from other owners that love theirs. Any insight would be great.
For reference, I have a medium sized lawn. I never let it get too long. No inclines either. Very easy to navigate and maneuver around as well. Self-propelled is nice, but it isn't a feature that I absolutely need (or at least it isn't one that I need the best "version" of).
PS. Keep up the awesome work on the channel! Thoroughly enjoy the content 👍
Hey Jordan! Hondas are built better than toros in my experience. Parts should still be around for a while considering they are still made and sold overseas. Thanks for being a cool fan!
@@GarageGear That makes sense. I am starting to lean toward the Honda. Just want something that I can get some serious longevity out of, so I am not having to worry too much about it over the year. Something that proper maintenance will keep running. I appreciate response! Always nice to have channels that give sold feedback and information 👍
@@lttlejordan23 you’ll get some longevity out of that Honda. The latest toros have issues backing up. Big pain in the neck.
Is it possible to put the HRX wheels on the HRN?
I don’t believe so! Definitely would affect the height of cut!
Is the electric start worth it for the Honda mower?
It’s a nice feature to have! 👍
Got a question for JB, I've got the HRX217 and have noticed the handle makes a loud buzzing and vibrating sound when going over bumps. I tried to tighten down the hex bolt but discovered it is welded to the frame. Any way I can quiet this?
I would check your handle bar adjusters to see if they are the problem there.
Do you know if you can put on the rubber wheels on the HRN model ? Thanks
I don’t believe they will match up and they will throw your height adjustments off.
@@GarageGear gotcha that’s what I thought. I wonder if they make rubber wheels the same size as the HRN plastic wheels 🤔?
@@troybuiltadventures5481 it would most likely be easier to retread them like I did👍 lasts longer too!
@@GarageGear yeah I googled it. I did not see any rubber wheels for the HRN
Do you know if the HRX 217 can be stored vertically like the Toro models?
No it cannot be stored vertically!
@@GarageGear thanks! I looked all over Honda’s website and the manual. I bought one! I am sure I will like it better than the FWD Toro Super Recycler.
I was able to snag a hrx217HYA with blade stop and hydrostatic trans for 799$ from Home Depot. It’s actually ready for pickup right now 😂
Nice! I love mine. Been a great mower for me. I picked up an HRN216VKA as a spare. Both are excellent but the HRX with the hydro is the Cadillac.
Awesome koston! Enjoy the mow!
That's what I paid 5 years ago for the exact same model. You'll love its cut quality and ability to suck things up! The hydrostatic transmission is awesome, too!
I got the same deal Memorial Day weekend sale 👍
I could hug you right now for making this comment. I ordered the hya on Wednesday. Paid $999. It shipped and arrived Thursday. I mowed today. Came here today and saw this comment. Contacted home depot and with a little convincing was able to get them to price adjust my purchase to $799
Purchased an HRX about 4 years ago. Its been a great mower. I was am considering the Timemaster since I have a over a 1/2 acre.
I would get a rider or a zero turn and save yourself the headaches.
I wonder what the wheel axle diameter is on each. Maybe you can get ball bearing wheels to replace the plastic ones on the HRN.
Ben! We have to hang out some time! You’re the king of ingenuity! 👍
@@GarageGear haha absolutely! Come on down to king island sometime. You’ll like my garage 😇 I’m an engineer, so I’m cursed with always trying to figure out how to modify stuff lol
You should test out a hrr216 I have one that lasted me 20 years so far many more to come 🎉
Specifically 2004 model
I’ll have to keep my eyes out for that!
HRU216 is best, mostly because of the cast bore.
Big win there!
My neighbor purchased an HRN a few years ago. She is retired and loves mowing her lawn. Unfortunately, her mowing days came to an end after bypass surgery. The mower sat in the backyard for a few years she called and gave it to me. I had told her we were looking for a used mower to do parts of the yard I couldn't get with our riding mower. I cleaned it up, got old gas out, and replaced the carb and it runs great.
Awesome krazyj! Perfect mower for what you need!
Hey JB, turn RPM up to 3,350 on those two mowers and transform your cutting experience and end result. I own both of those lawn mowers and was amazed at the difference. My previous HRXs ran happily for a decade at that speed until I finally sold them to buy the new ones. Steve
Hi Steve! Thanks for sharing this good information. Appreciate it! Good machines you have!
I would love to figure out how to do that on my Honda after break in.
@GarageGear you're welcome buddy. Side note,my Toro 21564 has a TSB out that replaces the carburetor with one that doesn't sputter. I learned this just today through my local Toro dealer, and they are ordering me one up under warranty!
@AEAC good to know thanks for sharing
Was the recall issue fixed in the current inventory? Looking to pick up the HRX217VKA from Home Depot but didn't hear much news on the recall status
Home Depot is only selling the repaired models at this time!
I just got my HRX from HD a week ago. It is not the modified cam version. No green dot on the box, and no stamp on the engine. Either it slipped through and wasn’t fixed or it was already fixed in production. The box has a blue dot.
@@johnwalters878 pretty sure the blue dot means the same as a green
FYI, my local Lowe’s and HD are now fully stocked with Hondas. Issue is all fixed

What gas you use?
@@blackhawks1870 Only tier 1 brands and octane depends on what I have on hand.
Love my GCV 170, but have had to Honda bond the valve cover after only a year. Bummer
Did the same thing on my hrr216 and my parents hrn 216. I used permatex right stuff sealer. The Honda bond sealer isn’t good, I don’t know why it starts leaking after only a year of use. What I do know is that mine will never ever leak again with permatex right stuff!
Thanks for sharing geometry wars. Interesting you had to do that!
@@michaelmaier2113 Apparently it’s very common on these unfortunately. Really disappointing Honda doesn’t change their manufacturing/building processes.
From what I’ve read Honda Bond is actually the gold standard. The issue seems to be that they don’t put enough on the valve cover to bond properly. My valve cover had almost none and even one area which didn’t appear to have any.
Since redoing mine it’s been fine. I will keep the Permatex in mind should it fail again. Thanks for the tip!

Hahaha yea my he sure is!
Okay, dumb question. Can u swap HRX rubber tires in place of an HRR 216? Or any other Honda mower?🤔 👍
I don’t think you can but that would make for an interesting test. The height of cut would definitely be different
Awesome video as always JB! ❤
One thing that came to my mind, a video that I haven't seen on your channel and one that I don't think you have done. Cleaning mower bags.. Perhaps not the funniest video to make, but you must have cleaned one sometime right?
I've been struggling twice now with my lawn tractor where the collector bag just pops "off" or open, killing the tractor.. I figured out yesterday that.. hmm, the bag was too dirty 😂😋 After cleaning it the tractor works perfect again...
Thanks for the positive feedback, my friend. I mentioned it one of my lawn mower cleaning videos in the past. You can hit it with a hose or a pressure washer in the future. You can also hang it in a fence post and rinse it that way. Glad it came clean for you and worked again. Thanks for being a cool fan as always.
I love my HRN216VYA but when the bag is full, it barely has any power to self propel
Thanks for sharing rover! Have a great weekend!
Mulch better for the lawn and faster
@@christopherblack4520ya I understand. But house I bought came with dallisgrass. Mulch is the last thing I want to do. A yearly pound of free nitrogen (mulched grass) isn’t gonna kill me. I’ll dig it all up this coming winter. Dallisgrass is no joke down here in Tx.
Plus, bagged looks way better, in my opinion. Clippings go in my garden.
My local home depot still have honda mowers for sale
Thanks for sharing Juan
I switched from new hrx217 to timemaster after 2 years, only complaint is no side discharge on Honda mowers. Love my timemaster, no problems after 2 years
Thanks for sharing Bob
The Timemaster is an excellent finish mower. That’s why so many landscaping companies use them. Over the last few years, many features of the Turfmaster have migrated to the Timemaster
I have a new HRX and an older HRN. Both are great and have the blade stop tech. My only wish is that I would have purchased the HRX with the hydrostatic drive.
Thanks for sharing jarrett!👍
I have 28 year old 536HRD with hydrostatic drive, it works great, even after 28 years and low maintenance. greetings from Belgium.
I’ve had both and prefer the HRX over the HRN.
Thanks for sharing
@gmrtg1414 - Would you please explain why?
@@furballbear The number one reason is the wheels on the HRX are a rubber vs hard plastic. If your yard isn’t smooth the HRN seems to bounce around a lot.
The main problem with these new GCV engines is that the entire cylinder and head are not serviceable in any way. Once the piston rings or components in the head wear out which is inevitable with how little oil is used in these engines, the entire engine is financially totaled. With what it would cost to replace those parts, you could easily buy a replacement engine for the same price. And of course there is also the plastic camshaft that is guaranteed to wear out and break after a certain amount of hours of use. And those were just the ones that didn’t have the compression release failures that effected over 400,000 units, that was the final nail in the coffin for these engines and the rest of Honda’s mower lineup. Their outdoor power equipment factory has been converted into a UTV factory where they’re building Pioneers and Talons. It’s a real shame to see what has become of them, now all we have is Briggs, Kohler, Kawasaki, and the countless number of Chinese Honda clones to power equipment now.
100% spot on here! They are plagued with their fair share of problems. I still find them to be better than most. Thanks for watching as always BCSERK!
The vtec joke caught me off guard 😂
I have the HRN thanks to you. Best investment i did. My complaint is the lack of traction of the wheels
Hahaha still waiting for it to kick in! Throw on some bike tires for added grip! Works great
I love the crab grass seeds on the table 😂😂😂
Those are for the annoying neighbors! 😈😂👍
I have 3 HRX's, all the 190s in excellent condition. Purchased off Facebook marketplace for $100 each. People let them sit over winter and the carbs foul, hence the cheap price. I love sitting on 3k worth of mowers.
Oh wow! What a deal!
Honda's still making engines, so it's not a total loss. The sad thing is we don't get them in Canada anymore either because for some reason, our mowers are made in the same plant as the American models. That being said, I never had any engine that worked like a Honda. I mean, clones and Kohler Command Pros are pretty close. I have the HRX217HYC, with the traditional Honda handles that is incredibly similar to the HRX217HYA. I also have the HRC216HXC, the commercial model similar to the top of the line American HRC216HYA and it also has the similar handle bar setup. They're both great machines and wouldn't trade them for anything else. However, if they wear out, I may look into a Scag SFC21 or SFC30.
I agree! Hold on to those bad boys! 👍
Can the Honda mowers be stored vertically to save space?
No they can’t.
In my experience mowers that stand vertically don’t usually stand up to the test of time.
Awesome video!! I know a guy trying to sell me a used one time basic HRX that he bought last fall. And now he has back problems, so he’s selling it. For $400. I already have a HRN I just bought this year and my older HRR that’s in great condition. I don’t need 3 push mowers 😂but I sure do want an HRX. Only because Honda is not going to be making anymore!! And in 10-15 years everything is going to be electric ⚡️. So I’m thinking about buying it and just put them all 3 in rotation… My wife thinks I’m crazy!! Can you tell me your thoughts 💭?? Anyone chime in please. I need some advice to tell my wife. Why I need 3 Honda mowers. lol. By the way the slip plate spray is not working very good on my mower. Grass sticks like crazy still. That’s for the great advice.
Hey my friend! Tell your wife I have 4 lawn mowers and I’m thriving lol! Many subscribers have told me they have bought another Honda and put it in storage. Perhaps consider doing that and storing it in an attic somewhere.
The HRX comes with a 5 year warranty for personal use.
Thanks for sharing
Didn’t they say they were gonna discontinue production?
They are selling off what’s left.
My only question about using the HRX bag on the HRN would be "does the 170cc engine have what it takes to fill the higher volume?"
It may not have the power to fill the bag up since it’s bigger you need more force, why don’t you just mulch it’s better for the land anyway
I would say it does! The hrn has plenty of power
@@GarageGear Okay, I think the fact that the HRX can bag/mulch might be the reason they went with the 220cc since it requires more power to mulch and push grass in a larger volume bag at the same time.
Hrx 217 has the better cutting system
Thanks for watching and sharing shangril! 👍
There's only 7 left @ home depot so I bought the hrx. The hrn had 50. Hmm
Hmm….🤔👍
I got rid of my last Honda because you couldn't change the self-propel drive belt without pulling the engine. That was a mistake on my part as the red bull I replaced it with is the worst mower I've ever owned. But I do wonder, is this one a little easier to replace consumable parts on?
Some mowers are like that where you gotta get the engine out of the way! Thanks for watching
Tough call.
Sure is! Guess it just comes down to assessing the needs of your lawn and what youll need out of a mower!
Honda makes a great mower,England and Australia have battery mowers, hoping Honda brings them to the U.S.A.
Thanks for sharing
i have a HRX217. after i think about 15yrs, one of my workers back the zero turn into the Honda and crack the shell. time to buy a whole new mower
Oh man what a bummer!
I’ve had 2 front wheel brackets bend on both of mine. Any upgrades to resolve this issue besides no abuse of course
Whoa how bumpy is your lawn?
HRX’s sold out by me. But they have lots of HRN without the self propelled. My lawn is about 5000 sq/ft and I’ve never had self propelled. Do you think it’s a necessity?
Hey Darren it’s definitely a plus to have the self propelled version! Perhaps try expanding your search window! I have a feeling you’ll find one!
Thanks. Love the channel!
@@darrenk3433 appreciate you Darren!
yet again another banger. Love your videos man, call me weird but they always motivate me to go and actually cut my grass lmao plus they are super entertaining and informational. keep up the great work
Appreciate you lol gas tank! Thanks for being a cool fan!
Great comparison JB! I think you know what I chose. Haha. I’ll let you know my thoughts comparing the new one to the older one. Any plans for the holiday weekend? Cheers my friend!
Hey Jay! Thanks bud! Let me know how yours compare! Probably jumping in the pool tomorrow hopefully! How bout you bud! Grillin?
Probably grilling or smoking something tomorrow. Watching the grandsons this afternoon! Enjoy the weekend! Cheers!

I just got a new house on a 1/3 of an acre with a large walkout basement 🇨🇦. I'm still trying to decide what would be the best long term investment in a mower for durability, performance and reliability? I'm leaning to the two here in your review and the Toro super recycler unless there's something better to consider? What are your recommendations and why? I keep reading mixed reviews on these Honda's and the super recycler what's the truth? (I'm not that handy yet coming from condo living so reducing repairs and easy maintenance and joy of ownership are top of mind. Thanks again for it insights
Hey gearhead! I would go with the HRX! You’ll have plenty of trouble free mows. The super recycler cuts great but has drive issues. 👍
What do you think about going the electric route with the new Toro 60v super recycler instead? I'm not setup with tools or the skillset for dyi home repairs and maintenance coming from years living the condo life
@@gearhead-do1xh you’re just asking for more problems with that battery mower. They still have the same drive system and back up issues even if they have a battery motor on top.
Thanks for your insights. Keep up the great contend ☀️

I said it before, I'll say it again:
I ❤ my old Hondas!😊
Can’t beat em dizzie!
My HRX217 from a few years ago has lately last season and seems worse this season, has been leaving random blades uncut!!!!! Been driving me up the wall!! Yes, blades are newer and been sharpened!
How fast are you mowing with it? Typically I see people mowing full speed and then they say it’s missing blades.
@@GarageGear walk pace. A tad over half. Ive even slowed down to see if that was the reason, nope. And its very random blades not tons but random pieces. Wondering if belt?
@@craigorlikowski2507 ok thanks for sharing. Also how often do you mow? Once a week or twice perhaps. If my lawn is overgrown mine might miss some blades
@@GarageGear oh no, about 3-4 days.
@@craigorlikowski2507 ok I don’t know what the story may be perhaps try some different blades on the mower and see what happens

Hey sell these at local home improvement stores!
👍👍
Thanks for watching ECT!
My HRR216K9VYAA has a chronic problem of drive wheels locking up when pulling the mower backwards due to corrosion in the drive shaft at the bushings. Has Honda eliminated this bad design in these newer generations?
Haven’t seen issues backing up with either of these mowers!
Excellent video!! 👍👍
Appreciate you Anthony
"Deck suction" is important factor when choosing a mower...and a girlfriend. 🤣
Good video, JB! Glad you were able to work in another one of my one-liners. Forgot to tell you though, only the first one is free. 😝🤣
A lot of truth in that statement! lol! I actually went back and re shot that line. Fit perfectly there! Have your account manager send me a bill lol! Appreciate the humor help my friend! 👍👍
Get the HRX while you still can - I finally fixed Honda's issue with too low Hydrostatic fluid, and NOW the machine is a little beast going up my moderate hills. Looks and feels like it's pulling just like a commercial mower now. Just make sure you have a competent dealer nearby that can do that transmission service under warranty if needed. In addition to the decompression valve fix.
Thanks for sharing Matt!
how long does it take you to mow 10k sqft with the HRN?
About 50-60 minutes. 👍
@@GarageGear Can I ask why not get a 30" and save time?

Alright Garage Gear…tell me how I did today
Bought a 3yr old HRX217HYA for $400. Came with spare blades, air filters, gaskets, belt, 3 Amsoil bottles, 4 cycle TruFuel bottle, winter cover and bagger.
Previous owner took religious care of it
You my friend, hit the jackpot! 👍
I’ve had my HRN for 3 yrs and the back tires are smooth but again the mower has been through the ringer and always starts first pull
Thanks for sharing luke
If you could only have one new mower, would it be the HRX or the Super Recycler? I've been struggling to decide for weeks.
I have both. HRX is 15 years old and cuts like the day I got it. Mulches and bags great starts with one pull. The Toro SR is another great mower. It will leave clipping when you end a run and also will leave clipping if the grass is a little taller. HRX can handle higher grass and really chews up the grass. I suggest using bagging blades on the HRX you get more lift.
The Toro SR is lighter and much easier to maneuver.
If it came down to getting rid of one I’d say the HRX. My Toro SR has the Honda engine so it should last a long time. My opinion is my 2 mower are the best 21” mowers on the market and can’t go wrong with either. Toro will be around awhile and Honda is getting out of the gas mower brand.
HRX hands down. See my previous videos on the Super Recycler
@@GarageGear Just got back from picking up an HRX and I made sure it had the green dot as well thanks to your videos. Very much appreciate your content!

Home Depot has the HRX on sale for $699 on their website if anybody’s interested
Must be a Memorial Day sale ! Thanks for sharing
Damn it. I got HRXHYA for $899 with my military discount last month. Should have waited as now it would cost $719.
For the algorithm!
UA-cams hiding these from me. 😂

Did anyone notice that Home Depot dropped the price on the HRX to $699?? Dang!
That’s what I heard! Thanks for sharing
So now we need a ranking between ariens, Honda, some of your other mowers, etc. of what is better. My son-in-law is buying a new one and I don't know how to advise him
Go Honda! The Ariens is cheaply made.
