Tyson has him beat in terms of raw punching power, but Jones ain't no slouch either. If he can control the ring and use distance to his advantage, Jones can take this fight easy. Even in his age Jones still moves fast enough you'll think you're surrounded. Tyson never knew, but he STILL forgot.
Roy went on too long because he absolutely adores the sport of boxing, but those defeats at the end of his career shouldn't take away from the absolute beast he was in his prime. Probably my favourite fighter ever ❤️
I first learned the left hook years ago from my taekwondo instructor. He taught me to throw it with my palm in and subsequently developed a very good left hook throwing it that way. When I transitioned to kickboxing I had an instructor tell me to throw the hook palm down. Rather than being arrogant and tell them I knew better, I decided to keep an open mind and throw it the way they taught. What happened was I ended up jarring my wrist and had to stop training for more than 3 months. Needless to say I never returned to that gym.
Shane! Thanks for having Tom and Roy on your channel. Please just leave it with what the time tested experts said and keep the thumb up. Great vid and then you finished it off by saying the palm down is harder? Everyone can make power many ways, but to say that GGG throws a hook like that for power purposes might not be accurate. From my experience as a pro Boxing coach I believe he uses it as a way to come over the guard and slip in hooks that land in unique ways. I would say that is the most definitive use of the palm down as well as just what a fighter does sometimes. Roy’s point about the pull vs push really made sense to me. I tend to throw mid to low hooks thumb up, but throw head shots palm down. Gonna try to start working em all thumb up and see how it feels. Great vid!
I switched from palm down to palm inside after I injured my thumb (mma-gloves with no padding for the thumb) against my partners forearm. I started analysing the pros and cons of both versions and found the palm inside/thumb up to be the best choice for bareknuckle, self defense. The biggest point for me though was that the structure is the same throwing the hook as a palm strike; just open the hand and land with the base of the palm. Same strike.
Look at Russian Boxing Coach Frolov he teaches the correct way in throwing left hooks with palm down his method is landing with the two big knuckles to avoid hand injuries
Man I have always wondered how he could do that multiple hook with so much power. Thanks @fightTIPS for getting this out. I've been looking for a video explaining this for a long time. Much Respect.

@H-town281 A I agree your better off learning both I think when you throw palms down it can give you a chance to frame off your opponent and then maybe even switch stances since you already landed and then throw another shot with your full weight behind it I think Roy’s hook is better for if your just trying to make sure you land your more likely to land if you throw multiple then that can lead up to a combination they both good
Oooh this is gonna be a good one Edit: alright, this video was really helpful, and I enjoyed seeing Roy letting those hands go, can't wait for the 28th!!

You can still do palm down. It’s really good for sneaking around the guard to the back of the ear. Thumbs up is mainly for multiple/power shots. Best to practice both.
If you're an amateur boxer, keep throwing it with your palm down. USA boxing recommends it because the palm in, thumbs up hook is illegal in some countries because boxers slap like that.
Don't feel like it's wasted dude, Gennady Golovkin uses palms down when he throws his left hook over the guard, it allows for an interesting angle that can slip between the shoulder and the guard and catch the chin at a very specific angle.
