The best complete tutorial and especially the last green screen part was awesome as I have been searching out ways to rander a transparent background in opentoonz so that I can easily use my characters many times.
this is the best tutorial I've encountered today. Thanks for making it looks easy to learn now! I managed to something like this after watching your video! again thank you !
You should move to Tahoma. It's an OpenToonz fork that contains a ton of bug fixes and some new features you may find useful. Most of your OT skills will transfer directly to Tahoma too, which is a nice bonus.
Been looking an entire day for this kind of video. Thank you alot man. top class video. I do wonder, do you have a video about how to make an effect of "talking mouth" for that kind of animation? (like.. same puppet only with talking mouth animation?). thank you once again.
Actually, you can export as PNG with a transparent background frame by frame, and with any video editing software, you can put everything together to make an animation.
Just curious, what software do you use to create the drawings that you imported to animate. Is there a way to create a drawing in opentoonz that you can then just animate from there? I've been trying to find ways to do that but I keep getting error messages saying that the plastic tool can not be applied to a column. Any thoughts and help would be great!
I drew the pieces in Sai. If you're looking for something free, Krita is good, but there are a lot of other good free art programs. Did you press "Create Mesh" before trying to animate with the Plastic Tool?
Thank you for the tutorial, it's incredibly helpful. Do you know if there's an option to "reset" the positions of the joints in the timeline ? I'd like to reset it if i ever forget to make a key beforehand.
I tried this and can't seem to get keyframes to work. Frequently if I change the skeleton in frame 9 e.g. it changes for all frames, even If I set a keyframe on frame one. But then sometimes it works. I can't figure out any rhyme or reason. Anyone seen that?
@@bayanihannetwork9312 Actually I eventually figured it out. I was setting keyframes in the table. However it didn't work until I went into the plastic tool (X), then chose animate, then right click on the skeleton and set a global key frame / global resting key frame to start with. After that I was able to animate the skeleton. The keyframes should be visible on the table column for the mesh layer.
Okay so, I'm having trouble with animation. My character is just snapping by key frames and not smoothly moving how yours was, I followed step by step. Any advice?
So to make things clear, when you build the bones, the image just bends according to it's direction? Edit: So, in trying to rig my own puppet, I keep heading into some problems, like my pngs disappearing once I move them, to them being too big that I would run into the first problem
I think the Level Strip window might be how people organzise their puppet assets? Sorry I really don't do anything too complicated so I can't help too much, I know there are other tutorials that go more in-depth though. Maybe they have some files you can test with too?
You need to have ffmpeg installed, the docs have a good tutorial for that opentoonz.readthedocs.io/en/latest/using_ffmpeg_with_opentoonz.html EDIT: put the wrong link woops
This tutorial was very helpful, but whenever I try to export it says that there's been a error that says "The statement in the 0x0000... made reference to the memory in 0x000... The memory can't be read" and then when I click Okay the program closes. How can I fix this?
Krita doesn't support tweening as of right now. You can deform images with points, but then you'd have to manually deform every single frame which would take way too long and probably wouldn't look that good.
you need to manually add ffmpeg (there's tutorial how to do this in the docs for ot) or just use fork of OT called Tahoma (yes, like the font and no, I don't know what the developer of Tahoma was thinking either). Actually, you should use Tahoma as all OpenToonz tutorials still apply (though the certain options may be somewhere else or be named differently) and Tahoma comes with a ton of bugfixes over OpenToonz and several nifty tools such as the perspective guides that make drawing easier.
What tools exactly? Some tools can only be used on a vector layer. You may have made a raster layer and tried to use those tools on the raster layer, so you'd have to make a vector layer to use those certain tools.
My mesh shifts a little bit to the right and therefore cuts pieces of the drawing. But the display before creating the mesh is correct. Can you help me fix that?
Did you move the original drawing with the animate tool before making the mesh? I think when you do that, the mesh gets made where the image was when you imported it originally, but I'm not super sure.
I personally have been using it for a year and i can say it can be daunting for beginners. I recommend looking for more opentoonz videos before diving in, I recommend DarrenT the most, he even has a great discord server with animation challenges and help chats.

You should make more Opentoonz tutorials. This was clear and well constructed. Very helpful -- thanks.

aaa thank you for this
not related to the tutorial but your drawing style is so cool I love it
I never knew, ty!
Is this a raster level or a vector level? Great tutorial.Thanks.
I imported the image so it's raster I guess. But you can make a vector layer and still do this kind of puppet animation.
Very helpful! I will try tomorrow for the first time in my life!
THIS IS EVERYTHING I WAS LOOKING FOR THANKS😭
