  • Welcome to part 1 of the Complete guide for lip-syncing in OpenToonz. In this we cover the drawing of the mouth shapes, setting up your character for lip-syncing, and offer a general introduction to the drawing tools in OT.
    In part 2 we demonstrate our converter tool which has been integrated into OpenToonz as of version 1.2. Here we will show you how to join your mouth shapes to lip-sync patterns created with Papagayo.
    Part2: 'Lip-Sync Made Easy':
    • Lip-Sync Made Easy
    At the end of these 2 tutorials you will have a grasp of some of the basics of OpenToonz, and be able to create your own talking character with ease.

    BARRICADOS YOU ARE AMONG THE FEW GREAT TUTORIAL CREATORS I'VE EVER SEEN. YOUR TECHNIQUE IS BRILLIANT. IT IS CLEAR, COMPREHENSIVE, ARTISTIC AND EFFICIENT. For instance, using the Papagayo tool (speech/text/mouth synch) is not just about loading a file, there are number of obscure steps which you visually explain, and other teachers don't, expecting the novice to know. Please keep up the good work. YOUR TUTORIAL SERIES HAVE THE POWER TO BOOST OPENTOONZ USEABILITY AND POPULARITY TO MAKE IT GO VIRAL. I was worried how to pay Adobe $73 a month forever (plus future increase, as it was increased from my student start at $29 p.m.). At first OPENTOONZ scared me at having to give up Adobe After Effects to take on a new learning curve. BUT not now, after seeing your tutorials. If and when I can generate my first income through my art, I will want to make a donation to you. Thank you for your generosity.
    Please see my website at poppycockplace.com to see what I'm doing with children's cartoons (using After Effects) and Soundcloud music tracks (using Logic X) or UA-cam "Biolo Dingli Primeval Symphony".

    Hi barricadoes, why is my vector column bucket tool color always black when I click on another column?(it only shows right color when i click on the column)

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jeff! Yep it does that.. every new column creates its own colour palette, which by default contains 2 colours: transparent and black. And so you can start drawing right away, it sets the default fill to black. This can be tiresome if you have a custom palette of colours in one level and want to use those same colours in another one.
      A handy tip is to find the icon on the bottom left of your level palette - the one that looks like a grid of squares with a mini arrow (and on hover says: Click and drag into Studio Palette). So, on the level with your chosen colours, drag this icon to the Global Palettes map in the Studio Palette window on the left. It will add them to the small default list that is already there. Double-click to give it a nice name.
      Now you can drag the green icon which you just named from your studio palette into the level palette window for each new level/column. OT will add your palette colours to a new tab in this window. Hope that helps!

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Geo! You can only edit points on a line like this if you are using a vector layer. If you have chosen a raster layer then this tool won't work. So, right-click on a column in the timeline and choose 'new level' (in OT layers are called levels). In the 'type' drop-down menu, choose 'Toonz Vector Level'. Here you can draw and edit your lines np :)

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  4 роки тому

      @@owusuaboagyecartoons1908 Hi SESYtoons. That's a good, but tough question.. how to go about being successful in the world of animation? I can offer some tips, but the road to success is unpredictable and different for everyone.
      My first tip would be to stay true to your own style. Learn from others for sure, but do not try to copy them. Develop your own way of drawing, of animating and story-telling. Listen to feedback and keep going. As long as it flows, it will work - there is no single way to animate.
      Secondly, animating is a lot of work, and after so many solo-projects it will be time to work with others. You'll need something to show in order to start collaborating with other people, but at the end of the day this is the most rewarding. It's no fun going solo forever. So, try to work together with other animators, musicians, story-tellers etc. It's more fun and you can learn and achieve much more.
      And finally, the route you take to get where you want is not always straight. Maybe it happens automatically through UA-cam, by gradually making cooler and better things and getting more hits. But maybe it requires working for an animation studio first.. starting at the bottom and working your way up, learning as you go. You can develop a lot of skills this way and people are generally happy to share their knowledge.
      There is plenty of free software available to help you make your animations. OpenToonz is one of them, and you can do a lot with it. Although you can use OT for putting together your final films, I generally prefer to take my OT animations (as png sequences) and put the final story together in a film editing program. You no doubt know of a few.. I've recently been playing with the free version of DaVinci Resolve which is pretty good. Blender is also one of my all-time favourite free programs, although the learning curve is relatively steep. I may be releasing some Blender tutorials in the future.
      I've spoken to many people around the world who share your passion and your dream, and developing their own style and embracing the (online) community that follows has served them well.
      So, good luck with following your dream! Start with making some animations, put them online, and let the journey begin :)

    Barricados, you are manna from heaven! I followed your steps in drawing my own talking head and succeeded forming the 10 mouth shapes. As instructed I started tweaking the head shapes slightly one at a time so they match their respective mouth shapes, but then tragedy struck. I don't understand why the color of the head shapes changed after I nudged their edges. I made sure they were closed paths and tried re-filling them with the original color -- to no avail. The thing is -- the head shape color of the other frames also changed. I tried doing revert scene but the unwanted color just won't go... Am I missing something or is this a bug in the program (OT 1.2.1)? Thanks for your help and may the universe reward your generosity!

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! Yes, it sounds like you are using the wrong type of layer (or levels as they're called in OT). If you right-click in an empty frame and choose 'new level', you 'll notice that you have a choice between 4 different types. You want to choose a vector level in this case (the top option). You can now make vector lines which are easy to move around or adjust with the C tool. Good luck^^

    omg i finally found a vid on how to do this i have one question, can i import images ive drawn and work useing them to do this?

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  3 роки тому +1

      Yes you can :) To import images (I'd recommend transparent pngs) simply drag them onto the OpenToonz stage and choose import (or load if you wish).
      When you drag your assets in, each will appear in their own column. However, to work with the lip sync tool you'll need collect all of your (10) mouth-shapes in a single column.
      To do this, choose a column containing an asset, and in the levels window, right-click on the level thumbnail and add another 9 level frames (to make 10 in total).
      You can now select your imported assets and copy/paste each one of them into their own level, in this column.
      Hope this works for you. If you need any more help let me know. Good luck!

    Brilliant, brilliant tutorial, although I have been stuck a few times and managed to sort myself out. However, one place I've been stuck at is from 8:37 with the second mouth shape. When I double click the second frame in the mouth level and try changing it to 2, OpenToonz renames my mouth 0001 to 0002a, and deletes 0001. Either I'm doing something totally wrong or it's because I'm using OpenToonz 1.3
    Either way, any help would be most appreciated.

      Figured it out at last. So, if anyone else has the same problem, resolution is to: drag and select Mouth Frames 1 through 10; Right-click; select Edit Cells numbers->Auto Input Cell Numbers; Click Overwrite. Seems to have worked for me.

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  5 років тому

      Thanks Mad Dog :) What you describe certainly shouldn't happen. I can't think of anything that would cause this behaviour and I'm not able to replicate the problem you're having. I can only assume it's a bug in OT 1.3. Maybe try a reinstall, or revert to a previous version if you can? That should fix things - OT is usually a very reliable software, and you should be able to change the frame numbers easily as in the video. Good luck! I hope you can fix it.

      I think I'm doing that. I am selecting the level itself on the sheet, then clicking on the "single frame" in the right-most column. I press Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V but nothing happens. I'm not using a separate mouth layer at the moment. I have 10 copies of the whole face with mouth shapes for the moment.
      imgur.com/a/LBHxrpF

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  6 років тому

      Ok I see the problem. You'll notice the text 'single image' under the frame that won't copy. This is because your level is linked to your imported graphics file.. it's being treated as the single imported object that it is. The solution is to make a new regular raster level by rt-clicking the timeline > new level > Type: Raster level. Here, select the first frame of the level window and copy and paste it 10 times. Now move back to the level with your drawing, and click on the level frame so that the drawing appears in your main viewing window. Choose the selection tool (S) and drag a selection box around your drawing in the main window. Copy this and paste it into the frame of your choice on the new raster level you made earlier.
      Let me know if that sorts it out. Best of luck.

    • @onedaydev
      @onedaydev 6 років тому +1

      Really appreciate the extra guidance. I was able to piece together a process to get the needed result. For your reference, and anyone else who might need it:
      Load all graphics via the Browser so they're each in their own column
      Alt-N to create a new level. From: 1; To: 10; Type: Raster Level.
      For each loaded column, copy the single frame, then select the corresponding frame in the raster level and 'Paste Into'.

      @Barricados  6 років тому

    • @Barricados

      Try this: click on the first frame of your mouth level - it should have a red outline with the number 0001 under it - and then use control-C and V to copy and paste it. This should duplicate your first frame, including its contents, and give you a new frame numbered 0002. Do this until you have at least 10 frames. Right-click on these frames and you should see a menu with more options.
      Use the selection tool to copy your imported mouth shapes and paste them into the correct level of your mouth-shapes column. Good luck and let me know if this helps :)

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  11 місяців тому +2

      Hi Gage! The easiest way to fix this is to make a new regular raster level. Right click on an empty column and choose New Level. In the type options choose Raster Level and hit OK. You now have a new column and in its level frames window you will see the level strip number 0001. Copy and paste this frame in its level window until you have the number you need, in this case probably ten. So you now have a new column with 10 empty level frames.
      Next, you need to copy and paste your imported graphics into these empty frames. So, navigate to the column containing your first imported graphic. In its level frames window, click on the thumbnail that says Single Frame. You should now see the contents of that frame in your main window.
      Using the Selection Tool, select the contents of this window and copy with Control C. Now navigate back to the raster column you made, choose the first frame numbered 0001, and paste with Control V. Your imported graphic should now paste into level frame 0001. Repeat this process for each of your imported graphics, copying and pasting them into the frame level numbers in your new column.
      Hope this helps.. let me know if it works for you^^.

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  6 років тому

      Thanks Giovanni, you're most welcome^^.
      When you've made your talking head and wish to use it in another scene, you have a couple of options. You can render the head scene (eg. as a transparent png sequence), and import it into a new layer.
      Or.. a more flexible option is to import the head scene as a Sub-xsheet. Open a new scene. In the File menu choose 'Load as Sub-xsheet' and import your head scene. This now appears as a single (purple) layer, and contains all of the head scene data. You can expand and collapse this layer using the open/close options in the Xsheet drop menu.
      Hope this helps.

Unfortunately now i'm stuck at the beggining of the scene of walking because i cannot modify my head in this mode: i'd like to change the sizes of the layer to make them fit with the rest of the body. Can i modify it as a sub-xsheet or i have to come bach to the earlier scene?

      You should be able to scale the sub-xsheet layer, but to modify you'll need to open it. Select the layer and choose 'open sub-xsheet' (in the Xsheet menu or short-cut button above your columns as of version 1.1.3). You should now have full control over your head and its bits.
      Once you've modified stuff, just close it again to return to a single layer. The changes you make here will not affect your original head scene.. so yes, you can modify as a sub-xsheet.

    2:56 I can’t select the mouth. Why?

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure why.. it should be straight forward to select the mouth. Are you using vector levels?

    why i cant merge columns help

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  Рік тому +1

      If you want to merge columns, select the columns you want merged and choose Xsheet/Collapse from the main menu, or use the icons at the top of your columns window. This merges your columns into a new (purple) 'Sub-Xsheet' column.. as OpenToonz calls it. You can open and close this via the same menu or using the handy icons.
      If you just want to transfer an item from one column to another then use copy/paste. If you want to add levels to a column (I use 10 for the mouth shapes), find the level thumbnails and copy/paste as many as you want. (You can copy and paste content between these as well).

      Make sure this file has the .dat format, and if you're making it in Papagayo then make sure the MOHO option is selected when you export the voice.

    Why can't i use the point tool.. it's showing "u cannot use this tool on toonz level" Wtf is toonz level?? Arghhhh help me...

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  3 роки тому

      Hi Janvi. An OpenToonz level is another word for a layer. In OT these are ordered next to each other instead of on top of each other. If you add a new level (by right clicking on an empty frame in the timeline) you can choose from different types. To use the point tool you need to add a Vector level. The other types are called Raster levels, which are handy for photoshop style brushes, but you can't edit the points on a line with these. So, create a new Vector level, draw a line with the brush tool, and then you can use the point tool to adjust your lines. Let me know if this works for you. Good luck^^.

    • @Barricados
      @Barricados  5 років тому

      Sorry to have lost you! What we're doing in this part of the tutorial is removing the cloak from the head layer. Because some of the cloak is in front of the head and some behind, we've placed some of it in a background layer (relative to the head) and the rest in a fore-ground cloak layer. While doing this we're closing the shapes for the neck and cloak so they are filled as we want. Hope this helps^^
