    Puppet animation's main difficulty, from what I've seen, is actually building the characters. A detailed and advanced puppet has way more capabilities and is easier to express with, but you have to make new drawings for all those different directions and tricks for blending things in, like the mouth or eyes.. it takes forever, but It's necessary if you don't want your rigs to look stiff.

    • @RigTheory
      @RigTheory  11 місяців тому +4

      Absolutely. I find that it's easy to over-engineer my rigs, which eats into production time, when a simple setup can work. Sometimes I hate how exact I have to be with frame by frame, so puppet animation seems to be a smart way to make the best use of the artwork. and, yup, if I'm not diligent enough my stuff looks super stiff :(

    I definitely agree! I know puppet animation tends to get a bit of a bad reputation due to some of the movements looking too robotic or janky as a result of the animators abusing the tweening option, but I think that issue can be easily walked around given that the animators both reference real life movements more often and hold back on their overuse of tweens that make the animation look a little too smooth.
    But you really summarized all my thoughts regarding puppet animation! It’s the simplest and least labor intensive animation method out there and I think more animators should really find ways to work around certain issues that may make the final product look less that traditional animation! (not to say that traditional animation isn’t amazing!)

      I find it a bit sad that most people get used to the look of puppet animation and gradually forget how fantastic frame-by-frame animation used to look. I miss so much the factor of deformation and manipulation of shapes, bodies, facial expressions and gestures. A lot of the big shows of the last decade are limited to being talking heads with a minimum of perspective movement in space.

    Most of these are mainly 2.5D/3D with just texturing. I use puppets in character animator, which is 2D and you definitely need some drawing knowledge because you need a hell of a lot of triggers...hell sometimes you're just doing frame-by-frame animation as the 'stick figure puppet' thing just does not produce the result you want a lot of the time.

    Puppet animation just feels so lifeless
    Like the character has no soul
    While frame by frame animation looks like it actually has life to it feeling like it a real breathing thing
    So frame by frame animation is better

    • @RigTheory
      @RigTheory  Рік тому +2

      That's true. Puppet animation will never be as vibrant or appealing as well done fbf animation. But when puppet animation is done well it is really appealing too.

  • @KiKitheAnimator

    3:37 But that’s the problem you can’t replace the soul that goes into 2d animation and many people with the animation talent will slowly disappear my dream is to be an animator and ill never accomplish it if people with zero talent can do it

    Puppet animation is definitely a friend in production, but it sacrifices detailed characters and linework that makes characters feel more fleshed out and alive.. for time and money.
    There are definitely times where it works for what you want to achieve, but the majority of the time and with how the industry is treating animation, all I can see it as is a quantity over quality approach to animation and its really sad.

    • @RigTheory
      @RigTheory  Рік тому +3

      100% Agree. I don't think puppet animation should be the only approach to animation. There are shots that are really helped along with puppets and moments that really require a frame by frame approach.

    I understand what he's saying, but there's something about hand drawn animation, for me, that puppet can never achieve. Human hands are just better at making movements seem natural, fluid, and lively. For TV, puppet is fine, but for bigger projects, we should go back to out roots. All I'm saying is that I disagree a bit.

    Wow, this was an actual informative video with no bullshit.
    2D puppetry in a sense is nothing new, as the art form of "shadow play" has been a tradition of many cultures for millennia. While artists have their own preferences for how to animate, its fascinating how 2D puppetry combines elements from other methods.
    Cutout animation is even older than modern 2D puppetry, with some pioneers of animation even creating entire films using this method. Krabat: The Sorcerer's Apprentice was a Czechoslavian film from 1978 that you guys ought to check out.
    Vanillaware is another studio that excels in this style of animation.

Yes, I learn animation by skewing/rotating parts but I didn't learn how to properly draw. skewing/rotating parts is much faster and it favors the deadline of the company.

    its definatly not better than 2D, with 2D the limits are less of a problem and you can literally do anything you want in contrast to 3D, Stop motion, and cutout where you kinda have to "problem solve" during the process, you can argue that 3D, stop, and cutout are better polishwise - allowing you to get more detailed and rendered frames - but animationwise 2d is by all means the best one .
