This is my first video by you,and your choice of song today is amazing.Tomorrow is MLK's birthday and he did this song as a tribute to him.MLK was a huge influence in his life and he was devastated when MLK was murdered
He preformed this song a few weeks after Bobby Kennedy was killed.
It was performed it in November 1968 as part of what became to be known as the 68 Comeback Special. Originally slated to be a Christmas special, Elvis didn’t want to sing Christmas songs. If I Can Dream was his protest/statement song in response to the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK as well as resistance towards the Civil Rights Movement.
This was the original mic drop moment. Elvis was supposed to sing a Christmas song. He told the network that he was going to sing this song and they would not regret it. People in the studio said he walked on stage dropped this all time masterpiece on the American public in one take, turned around and walked off. It was said that he went back to his dressing room and broke down and cried, he literally put every drop of emotion that he had into this performance.
@@rachet0708 he actually did it in 3 takes. ua-cam.com/video/e0Oav2kppI4/v-deo.html
@@greenhorn3170 Damn!! I was repeating what I had seen in a video interview with one of the Memphis Mafia years ago. That just shows how things can get twisted.
Its a tribute to MLK 🙏💙 after he go assignationed
Elvis changed the world……..Elvis is the only performer to be in the Rock-Country-Blues-Gospel Hall of Fames.
The greatest performer ever!
And the Rockabilly hall of fame (5). 👍
So was johnny cash
React to “In the Getto” and My Way
Still miss him!
@@Gin0827 and karate hall of fame, that makes six!
Elvis was a man that never forgot where he came from. Raised with nothing in Tupelo Mississippi. A man who was heavily influenced by where and what he came from. A man known for his extreme generosity because he came from nothing. Elvis touched people of all creeds and colors. Elvis is for everyone.
His old Rock n' Roll makes Ya wanna dance, his Blues make Ya wanna cry, His love songs make Ya wanna hug your woman, his Gospel makes Ya wanna go to church! He could do it all.
well said.
Elvis grew up very poor there were only four white families in his neighborhood. His childhood friends were black, i think this is where he got the soul. He sang in a gospel choir in a black church while he was in high school. He is a very humble kind man who never forgot where he came from. Great reaction i subbed.thank you
So you're saying only black people can have "soul?" C'mon...
@@midwaymonster30 that’s literally not at all what he said 🤦🏽♂️ I swear ppl nowadays love to take stuff out of context to start something.
Humes High, baby!! 👏
@@carlosolivares6393 That's literally what he's saying. You'd be crying racism if someone said a black kid got his intelligence from growing up with white people.
Elvis sang with emotion like no one else, it’s like he lives the songs he’s singing and makes you feel it. You must check out more of his live performances and you’ll see the wide range of his vocals and styles.
Elvis and James Brown were really good friends
LOL! MAN, I HAD NO IDEA on how I was able to detech James Brown Energy
@@MugnifyRTS It was told that James Brown went to Elvis' funeral and stayed for hours, could not bring himself to leave. They respected and loved one another. Love doesn't know color.
@@MugnifyRTS
*Phenomenal Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown: “I wasn't just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him. Last time I saw him was at Graceland. We sang Old Blind Barnabus together, a gospel song. I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There'll never be another like that soul brother.”*
James was the first entertainer to arrive at Elvis' funeral. He was so moved by Elvis' death that he requested, and was allowed, time alone with Elvis as he lay in his coffin at Graceland. James recorded a beautiful dedication track to Elvis, not long after his death:
ua-cam.com/video/qG3t8NGCBEQ/v-deo.html
@@CMD315 and only 2 people were allowed to have time alone with the body.....James Brown and Anne Margret. After the ceremony people in Elvis' entourage said both had to be told that it was time to go and both had to be taken out completely grief stricken.
I am fortunate to say I saw this performance live back in 1968, televised on NBC and nothing could top that. But what amazes me the most, is 55 years after this song was released, a new set of young people are digging this great talant and his tribute to MLK!
Elvis was, the complete package!
If I Can Dream was written by W. Earl Brown as a request by Elvis because of the assassinations of MLK (in Elvis’ hometown, Memphis) and Robert Kennedy that same year.
According to Steve Binder, the producer of Comeback Special, Elvis passed out after the 5th take because of exhaustion from putting all his emotion into the song, recorded on June 23, 1968.
The special was actually recorded between June 24-30th and released on TV on December 4th.
Elvis hated racism. He grew up in a black neighborhood and went to a gospel church. He never saw color, he saw the person and treated everyone the same.
This was a gospel song. Elvis is a gospel singer who got into the rock and roll business.
You have a credible ear because Elvis grew up in a gospel church and he was, is, and will always be the king of music to me.
The pain in his voice was REAL. HE WAS MOURNING MLKs death. It CRUSHED HIM.
You'll find elvis voice changes with every song he sings that's why is unique . Elvis grew up in the black churches he loved black spiritual singers and white gospel quartets
You should try watching, Elvis and the Black community, That Echo will never die
He grew up listening to black Christian music and blues music. Also likes gospel music. No one could control their voice as good as him. He had black back up singers and a few musicians. He covered it all. My way and in the ghetto. Two great songs
I was blessed to see him perform live and he shook the roof off the building with that voice. I will never forget that performance.
Wow, just wow. That must have been truly amazing. Unfortunately I was born too late Oct 77, but my dad absolutely loved 'The King' and 44yrs later I'm still loving him. I bet he was such a powerful voice live.
Elvis grew up dirt poor in black neighborhoods and churches in both Tupelo, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee. He never forgot where he came from or the music that influenced him. His gospel music is outstanding.
He's in several different Halls Of Fame. Rock & Roll, Gospel, R&B, Rockabilly, Country, Honkytonk, Christian Music and American Pop. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
This song, written specifically fir Elvis in 1968, encompassed how Elvis felt about everything going on in America and the world in the 60's. Race relations, Vietnam and the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK. He wanted peace and harmony for everyone.
I respect him much more when he is able to stand up for people and social injustices
@@MugnifyRTS And he did that
Check out Elvis Presley and the black community that Echo will never die, and check out In the Ghetto THX
Great reaction! If your heart and mind is open Elvis will take you to church!!! Love from Texas!!!
he and his backing singers all cried after this performance. He was gospel, blues, soul and rock. The King,
I love elvis presley his music Is amazing
Elvis was beyond great 💕
No one has or ever will come close to the KING.
You should know that Elvis was a gospel singer who also sang Rock and Roll.
"If I Can Dream" is a song made famous by Elvis Presley, written by Walter Earl Brown[1] for the singer and notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech.[2] The song was published by Elvis Presley's music publishing company Gladys Music. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, just two months after King's assassination. The recording was first released to the public as the finale of Presley's '68 Comeback Special.
Elvis was influenced in his early years by gospel, rhythm & blues and country music. He put all that together in his singing style.
One of the most mismanaged best talent and voice ever. Yes, he was recognized as the king of rock and roll for that age because the greatness of his voice came through even through the mismanagement that held him back. He could have been 10 times more successful than he was. That's how important it is to be well managed and protected from the destructive and limiting influences of the industry. So few have that. Gone far too soon. Good reaction
Soul? Yeah, Elvis had soul!! Listen to his gospel songs. Dude was THE boss.
Elvis sings from his SOUL!!!!
He also sings softly, he’s the best. He grew up poor, sung in the church and did have a dream for everyone to be on equal footing. And he covered most genres
He’s the GOAT.
Theres a reason they called the King.
It is great to see the younger people are getting into the King. Elvis has gospel roots, if you get a chance listen to some of his gospel music. This is my favorite song of all time. So much emotion, and passion, and none of it is BS. Thanks for doing this my man. Goosebumps every time I listen to it.
Elvis was born into Poverty in East Tupelo Mississippi in 1935 during the Great Depression and Segragation. He Grew up in one of only four white Families in a Predominatly Black Community, just across from Shakerag, one of the Poorest Ghetto's in the Country. He Loved Black Spirituals, and the Gritty Blues of Shakerag, these along with Gospel, R&B and Country were his Earliest influences. When he was 13 his family moved to The projects in Memphis Tennessee where he was Drawn to Beale Street and the Memphis Sound. He would jam with other Greats like BB King, Little Richard, Big Mama Thorton, Mahalia Jackson, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson and James Brown just to name a Few.
So You've Got A Good Ear, You could Here the Music of His Youth, Elvis Sang in both Black and White Church's Growing Up.
Elvis is in the:
R&R Hall of Fame
R&B Hall of Fame
Rock-a-Billy Hall Of Fame
Country Hall of Fame
Gospel Hall of Fame
Pop Hall of Fame
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Elvis Presley is Still to this Day the Top Selling Solo Artist of All Time, with 1.6 Billion Records Sold World Wide 🌎

Elvid Presley - In The Ghetto
(Music Video) (1969)
This song was a tribute to Martin Luther King, MLK was shot and killed 8 miles from Graceland in Memphis. Elvis was friends with MLK and his death affected him. The biggest take away for me listening to his music is his natural passion for the FEELING that the music brings. Vegas still loves & misses you King 👑
Really, if you want to appreciate the raw talent of the man, you can do no better than watching the whole 68 comeback special. It's fire start to finish.
His voice is so powerful in the song he sang the hell out of it.
This was Elvis' tribute to MLK Jr; btw, James Brown & Elvis were very good friends
Your gonna be shocked....Elvis is the king of music...he does it all.
React to Elvis singing In The Ghetto live in Las Vegas 1970.
He used to sing with guys from the black community at the Baptist Church , real friends he had and wanted nothing of him but friendship, it showed his blues and black soul music coming through, he loved gospel music and the choir there really taught him that
I grew up on Elvis's music. Check out "In the Ghetto". He got a lot of hate for it from all races. But what he managed to do was bring attention to white folks the hardships of black folks in poverty level communities.
He could sing anything from rock, to blues to gospel to country. But his favorites had a bluesy feel to them because he grew up sneaking into the black bars around Mississippi. He loved and respected the black community and he knew at a young age that it wasn't right how they were treated. Elvis was a good man with a huge heart. He was also extremely generous with his money.
When he first came out, teen girls were in love with him, teen boys wanted to be him, and parents hated him because he gyrated his hips and made their daughters have bad thoughts LOL. He was even banned from having his music playing on stations around the US.
I didn't know he went thru all that much respect to him. I knew he had some soul in this one when he did the air grip lol I was like there it is!
Elvis's first love was gospel music, as a young child he went to black and white churches.
@@ikewp901 thank you for pointing that out. Yes, his first was Gospel.
I've seen an odd trend of bad history being spread by some Elvis fans out there in some youtube comments in the past saying - "Elvis first love was Country, then he moved towards gospel & blues later".
Nope. Country was certainly part of his influence, but Elvis himself addressed this early in his career. In 1957 interview he told the press - "My first love I would have to say would be colored spirituals" (referring to Gospel of coursel).
It's not fair to Elvis some fans came get this correct.
It's just nice to see like someone like yourself in comments actually get this right.
@@MugnifyRTS yeah the "Air Grip" Always was telling for me too 🙂🙏
@@jayviviano109 sorry if I'm naive but what exactly is "air grip"?
Elvis is the king of rock n roll. To hear more of his blues try listening to: Trying To Get To You, One Night, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, That’s All Right, Heartbreak Hotel, Mean Woman Blues.
There's a reason that to this day Elvis remains the #1 best-selling solo artist of all time.
He got his soul sound from being raised from being a baby, around amazing black people singing gospel. He just loved the emotion and sound. It shaped his voice to be the most famous voice in the whole history of music! Just proves black and white can and should be proud to be unified!
Elvis was raised in an integrated way--young friends were black, because that's the neighborhood he grew up in, swimming in the crick and snacking on apples. Shopped for clothes where the black community shopped 'cause he loved the look. And sang in the black choir into the late hours after white church was over. There's many reasons why he sounds bluesy!!! I love him more now that I've found out these things about him than I did when I loved his music. And his folks must've taught him right, not prejudiced like so much of the South.
Loved your review on Elvis. Elvis grew up singing in black Baptist churches. Wasn't a songwriter but had a friend write this for him to honor Dr. King after his assassination.
Elvis was the worlds first ever super star, no one will ever come close to him He performed a live concert that had 1.3 billion viewers...a record to never be broken. An icon, taken too early and too young. And James Brown actually went to his funeral and called him his brother
And he was one handsome SOB! Even now looking at how style has changed..He still to me is one beautiful specimen! Lol
Whitney Houston’s mother was part of his backing singers .The sweet inspirations.
@@gilliancheshire3596 yup, one member of that group had a cancer lump in her ovaries. When Elvis found out he called the best doctor in Vegas, L.A and New York to look over her before and after the show. He then prayed and cried tears for it to go away, by the next day it was gone. Dude was a legend and blessed
If you aren’t moved by this you have no soul just an amazing performance
Love your reaction. More Elvis please ❤❤
Elvis was outstanding and his drummer the late Ronnie Tutt was excellent.
You hit it spot on with Baptist! His background singers consisted of 3 gospel groups named The Stamps Quartet, The Jordonaires and Sweet Inspirations.
James Brown and Elvis were really great freinds. There is a great interview with James where he talks about how he loves Elvis.
King of Rock and Roll, he grew up on blues in Memphis, a lot of influences and he sang in church
Its sole blues and a touch of gospel
It was said he went back stage and cried and the band also. They didnt know he was going to get this deep. He miss MLK alot. Hes great!! RIP ELVIS WE LOVE YOU❤❤❤❤❤❤ He was gospel and rock. He was everything.
Penacost he grow up in holy rollers I grow up there getting the hole ghost and dancing and shooting. He has win Grammys for Gospel. Elvis Presley was the King of rock and roll he would tell you there is only one King Jesus Christ.
Elvis definitely had soul. He was born with it. He grew up in the Assembly of God church and sang both white and black gospel music.
His voice was phenomenal, but he also knew how to use it to deliver the song. He was a great performer as well. His live performances are so entertaining. Many singers only sound "good" when fixed in the studio. Elvis was the real deal. Try "What Now my love". His Aloha from Hawaii special had many great performances. Jan 14th of this year was the 50th anniversary of that special that 1.5 BILLION (that's a B!!!) watched via satellite.
Must check out “In The Ghetto” live. It’s powerful. Such an amazing kind & generous man surrounded by horrible medical staff😔💞
Elvis Presley was a musical explorer. He always sought to blend various styles of music into his recordings, which was a revolutionary thing to do during the 1950s and 1960s. In the late-1960s, Elvis Presley wanted to return to his musical roots. He made recordings in Memphis, Tennessee with musicians and singers from the budding Soul music genre. This song stylistically is a good example of what he was doing in the recording studio at that time.
He was originally the king of rock and roll and then just the King becausehe did nearly every genre
YES that is what they called him
If lions could sing, they would sound like Elvis. 😎❤👍👊✊✌
Elvis loved the coloured people he loved them gospel beautiful people ❤❤❤
All his music is great especially his gospel
Watching your reaction has been a pleasure. Thank you for doing this!
But be careful please. It's easy to disappear in an Elvis rabbit hole for a long time! 😄
My suggestions:
Trying To Get To You, 68 Comeback Special
In The Ghetto, live 1970
Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Intro... Men with broken hearts)
Polk Salad Annie, live 1970
Suspicious Minds, live 1970
Trying to get to you is also one of my favorites..but honestly. I don't think he had a bad song..I can't think of one anyway.
LOVE ALL OF IT. ELVIS DID ABOUT SEVEN HUNDRED EIGHTY SONGS. ( BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS ) IN VEGAS
LOVE MORE ELVIS💥
If youre an ELVIS fan you get it. If not , you never will.
elvis could sing effortlessly, he was th eking for a reason, he loved gospel, blues rock n roll, when we was younger he sang pop stuff, but as he grew up he became much more powerful singer
The King at the height of his powers. And there's a valuable message in there for everyone, even more than 50 years later
More Elvis please ❤️. You can start with " Elvis and the black community that eco will never die". It's very interesting
When I was a boy Elvis was already a massive star. I wasn't a fan but it would impossible to overstate his presence on every media. I have enjoyed your presentations because it makes this mythic figure more like a human than an icon.
ELVIS IS IN ALL 5 MAJOR MUSIC HALLS OF FAME....ROCK, POP, R&B, GOSPEL, and ROCKABILLY. His passion, despite being tops in Rock n' Roll, is GOSPEL, where he won his 3 Grammy Awards.
These were very difficult times and Elvis achieved a change through his music. now in these times there is no singer who makes a musical theme to calm our mind and spirit. god bless america
He was amazing and spread such great words. Another blue eyed soul man.
The foundation of Elvis is Gospel.
You didn't hear him say thank you good night. But to you. Thank you 👍 Thank you very much 🙏
James Brown was the king of soul and Elvis was considered to be the king of rock and roll.
James and Elvis were actually very close friends. After Elvis died James did a tribute song for Elvis called , James brown singing love me tender tribute to Elvis. James attended Elvis's funeral and sat by his casket for four hours after the service was over. James called Elvis his soul brother.
Subbed
Elvis was nothing but soul. When a man can sing a song in such a way that makes people break down and cry for absolutely no reason other than the emotion that they are getting from the song......he has soul.
You should go back and watch James Brown interviews and see what he said about Elvis. They were close personal friends and James always professed his undying and unconditional love for Elvis.
Elvis was the King. Period. Enjoyed your reaction. I recommend Elvis "Unchained Melody" June 1977. Six weeks before he died, but still incredibly powerful.
More Elvis: In the ghetto
There’s a little mini documentary on UA-cam called Elvis and the Black Community. It shares that Elvis sang in a gospel choir while he was in high school.
