Elvis was too modest and humble to accept the king title. He felt it insulted the black musicians who inspired him such as Fats Domino and also because of his spirituality. He felt Jesus was the only king worthy of that title. And I can understand his point. But as far as entertainment and who broke racial lines and opened doors and broke all records prior to him that alone made Elvis the king.

Elvis didn't like being called the king...he would tell people " im not the king there is only one king and his name is Jesus Christ im only an entertainer"
Elvis was very very humble and never seen himself as anyone special or better than anyone else.

Great quotes. As far as being called “king” goes, he would also sometimes respond to that by saying the real king of rock and roll was Fats Domino, who, like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, was one of rock’s black founding fathers.

As I've stated before, if Elvis were truly racist, James Brown and Muhammad Ali would have had nothing to do with him. Elvis was friends with both icons of Black Power during the Civil Rights Era. He was also generous and kind to his black household staff. Please watch part 2 of this. Another recommendation is Baz Luhrman's interview of Sam Bell, one of Elvis's childhood friends. BTW, he didn't like the 'king' title. His avid fans just started calling him that, and he responded, " Jesus is the only king." He seemed to remain humble. Great reaction!

Elvis and Martin Luther King were well acquainted as well. Elvis was in Washington in 1963 in support of Dr. King. But, like President Kennedy (who met with Dr King in the Oval Office the day before) and Muhammad Ali, they didn't want to take away from the message with their appearance. The 3 came to town in support, Dr. King met all three a day or 2 before. I can not find anything of Elvis met with Kennedy that week (although I know the president and Elvis had met and had a mutual respect for one another) or if Ali met with Elvis or the president. Elvis' "If I Can Dream" is in tribute to Dr. King and Senator Robert Kennedy both assasinated in the spring and summer of 1968, respectively. Elvis performed in live on TV, December 3, 1968, the first time the public heard the song. Elvis was a big supporter of Dr. King and Senator Kennedy's bid for the presidency.

If you can find Part 2 of this video, you’ll hear what James Brown, Whitney Houston and Eddy Murphy thought of Elvis. Whitney’s mother was a backup singer for Elvis for a time with The Sweet Temptations. James Brown sang spiritual with Elvis and admired him greatly. Having grown up in the black community, I believe that Elvis drew inspiration from them and it became part of his life. Some posters here have said that they cannot find Part 2 except as posted by another UA-cam user. Elvis raised the awareness of artists like Little Richard by singing their songs. Elvis appeared on a then nationwide TV Entertainment show called the Ed Sullivan Show. Within a year, Little Richard made his first of many appearances on the TV entertainment programs.

Everyone covers to this day each other’s music. The rap group that combined In the Ghetto with their music is the same as Elvis loving Black music but got so criticized because of it. If you watch the new ELVIS movie you will learn so much about him you never knew. BB King and he were good friends. When Elvis died they had to pull James Brown out of Graceland several times he was so devastated. He and little Richard became close friends. There’s a U Tube interview and Little Richard is saying about Elvis. He was my baby, I loved him and they’ll never be anyone like him again. His generosity was almost to a fault. He’d buy his black cook a house, and her own car. She wrote a book about him that was so touching, I cried at times. He bought a lady with no legs who was using a scooter to get around a brand new electric wheelchair & she didn’t even know who he was. Most of his charity was anonymous. Unless by giving money and others would give more money, then he’d let them know. He has been so maligned his whole life. He wasn’t perfect, but he was a humble, shy, introverted funny & loving man. When he’d get on stage, he’d come alive. But in between he was quiet and very spiritual. If you do want to see the movie, it’s rented or sold on Prime Video, Apple TV app Xfinity App streaming, HBOMax and even rent or buy on U tube. I like the one on Apple because they show extras at the end. Thank u for opening your mind even though you may have thought differently of Elvis. I’m sure you’ve heard about his only child’s death this week( Lisa Marie… age 54). He died at 42. Her son committed Suicide in 2020 at age 27 and she never got over it. They’ve had fame and fortune and Elvis worked all the time because he loved music. Now 3 generations are gone and 3 grandchildren are left and they are Elvis’s blood but don’t have his last name because Lisa Marie had two children by 2 separate husbands. She was also married to Michael Jackson for several yrs. They felt they were the only ones who could love another and understand that level of fame and trying to navigate that iconic level as a solo artist. Bless them all and give them peace to endure what is yet to come ahead. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

In The Ghetto was written for Sammy Davis Jnr, but he declined and said he knew the perfect person to sing it - his good friend, Elvis Presley. EP sang it with conviction because it was his story as well - the white boy from a black Mississippi ghetto.
We, all of humanity, cannot deny this man the dignity and respect he deserves for fulfilling his purpose on Earth. He never saw skin color, nor treated anyone any different to what he would hope to receive himself.

That’s all he knew he didn’t have a prejudiced bone in his body. He broke through so many barriers, he refused to leave his female singers behind when they told him to….he wasn’t gonna show up if they couldn’t go with him and he’s done so many other incredible things and a lot of it we don’t even know because there wasn’t paparazzi out there and he wanted things that he had done kept private. He didn’t want it in the newspaper glorified, he earned everything he got in his life he paved the road for so many artists then & to this day. Thank you for really seeing who Elvis was. Elvis was born and grew up in a Ghetto In Tupelo Mississippi. He was a little boy when he found his first Baptist Church and Gospel music, he didn’t know he was the only whites person in there, he didn’t see colour or race.
His first love was Gospel music, it owned his heart and he recorded over 220 Gospel songs. You can tell by his voice when he sings Gospel how much he loved it. James Brown used to come to his house a couple of times a week and they sang Gospel until morning. When Elvis died James spent hours just sitting next to him. He had to be helped to walk and get home because his friend was gone. The world needed Elvis longer and it needs him now. If Elvis heard anyone call him the King of anything he corrected them. He told them there was only one King named Jesus and he was just an entertainer. Jesus was the only person held above his Mother. And she taught him to show respect for all. All of his friends parents loved that little boy because he always used Ma’am and Sir when he addressed an adult, he did that until he died.
They said he was racist because he had a black cook. She was loved like family, she was paid high wages and he bought her a new car and a house. She didn’t like to go home in case he got hungry later so he gave her a reason to want to go home. He took her to see the house but he never told her it was hers until she said she liked it.
Did Elvis really grow up to copy black people? Or did he grow up to do the only thing he knew how to do?

They felt it was black music because it did have soul & was a more bluesy kind of rock & roll. Not the Rolling Stones kind. And, if you have not watched him sing 'In the Ghetto', you need to check it out. Powerful stuff. And Elvis was considered the king because there is not a human in the civilized world who doesn't know who he is & know his music. He sold millions if not billions of records. He did so many beautiful songs. His gospel will make you cry. Blue Christmas is stunning. I could go on & on & I'm not some kind of super fan. Just stating facts. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were.
He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Elvis always gave credit for the rock’n’roll music ,to black people. ❤️He said where it oroginated from . That it was an amalgamation of gospel ,rythm and blues and so on . I don’t remember the exact wording. But he actually says that ,in the 1968 tv special . There are different video clips of that . And Please ,Please react to that part in the special with the gospel sequence!❤️
I love that so much . Its so Beautiful. 😍

And Elvis presley thought he would be forgotten. Its moving and fantastic to see that our younger generations are realising how he changed and helped to unite folks through music ,he was definitely a one of a kind human being. Reactions to Elvis is keeping his passion for singing alive so hopefully still will inspire our youth of today, so they too can create better material to guide the folks on the right path . Because music is a very powerful tool done the good way no violence,or hash words . For exsample Tom Mcdonald's brilliant rap ,welcome to the System now that was clever . Elvis new what to sing ,he got a lot of stick and some didn't want him to sing in the Ghetto but he ignored them and sang it anyways and it became a big hit. Music is great for the soul when it is a wise guide that inspires not dark or angry attitude like in sadly alot of youth music today. Anyways said enough peace ✌️ love and respect 👊🙂 to u all

Elvis fortunately was not like those with backward thinking. I grew up as a military brat, and we were taught to respect everyone. Regardless of their ethnicity, social status or economic position. Thank you for representing Elvis with the truth. Elvis was more of a product of the black community that he was of the white. That's one of the reasons he was so great. Love your dive into Elvis. I am glad this video has opened your heart up to a different narrative about the career and the man. Part 2 is worth watching though the editing is very choppy. I have read many accounts over the years about Elvis’s career. Here is what I know.
Rock and Roll as a genre of music did not exist before the 1950s. Rock is a fusion of country, r&b, and rockabilly. Elvis came along during a time of deep segregation. Basically, there were white radio stations and black music stations. “Black” music (referred to as race music at the time ) was not played on white stations. When Elvis’s single came out, white stations wouldn’t play it because they thought he was black. There were DJs that got fired for playing it. When Elvis was first coming up it was the white establishment that blasted him. In the media. The schools. The pulpit.
There were many artist that contributed ( black and white) to the creation of Rock and Roll. Due to the the societal structure at the time, Elvis was able to help bring it into the mainstream. A whole population got to hear music that they had never heard. Little Richard in an interview once thanked Elvis for opening the door, so other artist could walk through.
MJ is considered the King of Pop. There was not a mail in ballot to determine that title. Due to his contribution to music, the public on there own honored him with the title. It is the same with Elvis. He is considered the King of Rock and Roll because of his contribution to musical history. Elvis actually hated the title. When asked about it, he stated that there was only one King- Jesus Christ.
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. In fact, I see you have one about Angelina Jordan. Love her. Off to watch that one.

Looking at what elvis did, he added something to R&B, and that was Country Music. His version of Rock & Roll became the standard, blending different styles.... if you compare Elvis 1953-1955 original Sun Studio covers of R&B (even his Country covers) and then listen to the original R&B and Country versions, you will see what I mean. I read the reason being, that it was just much too difficult of a song for him to sing, considering all the effort it took to record it. So, he only did it for the comeback special twice, which he wore a black suit and a white suit, and once live in concert somewhere. It was just too difficult to sing, it’s been said of him.

I think the "King" name was given to him because he blew up the genre and was able to cross those barriers of unacceptance of the music. Just as pop music was around when Michael Jackson was named the King of Pop... because of the massive numbers and popularity he created that set his songs apart... no one could top him. It's basically the same sentiment, not that Elvis created the rock genre. Great reaction.

The whole "king of pop" crap was nothing but fandom commercialism to promote him. Lisa Marie was not happy about MJ calling himself the king of pop either. She let him know it too. Elvis never considered himself the king of anything, in fact he shunned that "title", he had nothing to do with that whatever. Not only that but he always gave full credit to those who came before him and he also resurrected several of their careers, giving them a boost they never would have gotten otherwise. Later on the Beatles and other English superstars also give these pioneers full credit for their beginnings and later successes.

46 years after his death, people are still calling Elvis the King of Rock'n'Roll, but he didn't like that title, he believed that the only king was God and he actually told this to his fans several times, he said: I believe that God is the only true king.
I think that Elvis is and only the king of Rock'n roll, he is the king of music because he can sing very well in any genre, but what do you think, is he good enough to be called a music king?
Elvis was really in my mind, the King of GOSPEL and other music, no one does it better then him, he is best known for making Rockn roll famous, so he was called The King of Rockn roll, but he never liked that people called him that.
He repeatedly stopped fans who said that he was the king of rock'n roll, telling them:
I'm just an entertainer and singer, God is the only true King!!
Elvis was born in the poor parts of Tupelo Missisippi and it was mainly Afroamericans living there, at the place where Elvis family lived there only lived 3 more white familys, the rest was colored people, his family was dirtpoor until he became an artist after singing in a mainly colored peoples church during his childhood.
Did you know that he had several friends that where Afroamericans, one of his friends where James Brown, yes THAT James Brown (The King of Soul), another artist was B.B King, yes that B.B King...
He also was a good friend with Mohamed Ali, yes the GREATEST boxer of all time, he even had a Robe made for him, but it was to much bling on it so Ali wouldn't where it more then one time to a fight.
He really admired Martin Luther King very much, Elvis felt that all people are equal, unfortually he never got to meet him, that would have created to much problems for both of them at that time.
He had several medical problems, Glaucoma, sleeping, irritable bowel syndrome, things that affected his real life and made him need medication to function.
Yes, he took medicines that today are considered to be called drugs, but at that time doctors prescribed it to him and to ordinary people, they did not know of the problems it could give people (side effects).
He never took any so-called street drugs, but unfortunately he did not realize that those medications would be a problem for him, he thought that they where ordinary medicine because his doctor prescribed them to him and to everyone else that needed it.
Many of his relativs died at a relatively young age, so even if he wouldn't have the medication, he might have died at about the same age.
He could never be alone and thus himself, at that time the word superstar did not exist, so nothing could prepare him for that kind of life.
Did you know that a big group of white poeple actually smashed his records and wanted to ban his music, just because they called it so called N... music, that is so painfun to think that some people actually can think like that, skincolor is just color and nothing more, when will people realise that?
There are some videos of when Elvis joking and messing up, he loved to joke around and pretend that he did not have control, but he had total control, he acctually conducted his musicans and back up choirs all the time !
He is the only person to have 2 records gone to sell Gold and 2 to to sell Platinum since he died.
Elvis is also in almost every genre of Music Hall of Fame (5 that I'm sure of Rock 'n' Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly and Rhythm and Blues), if Gospel is a genre in Music Hall of fame, then he should be in there to, but no one else is in more then perhaps 2 genres.
Not bad for someone who never took a single singing lesson, yes he sang in church so perhaps he learned a little there, right?
Something else that people tend to overlook:
He always conducts his musicans and backup singers, he never gets credit for being able to do that.
Imagen you are a singer, you have great musicans, you have great backup singers, no Guest Artists, no Autotune, no Lipsinging and no Fireworks, now all is about your skill, could you handle that pressure?
At the time when Elvis started, then Autotune did not exist yet and when it became availible, then he still did not use it, he did not need to, he always sang so that you could hear every word that he sang, the Fans always felt that he sang to just you !
That is what Elvis did in over 1600 concerts (during his 20 years as an artist), despite having problems with his health, like his Glaucoma, the headlights must have hurt his eyes like crazy.
He sang over 800 songs, I wonder how he could remember them all, he never vrote a song himself, so he had to remember other peoples lyrics, well that is amazing in it self.
By the way he had Glucomea and that must have been difficult being in the headlights all the time, that could be why he sometimes closes his eyes, but also sometimes squinting !
This unfortually made him temporary blind after the shows, that is why they led him of the stage and into his car, that is something that not many people knew about Elvis.
Elvis suits was made of 100% Polyester, or 100 cotton (I'm not sure witch one), it was originally a karate suit, it was very light, but it was hot, so it made him sweat a lot, he got some bad press about that, but if you give it all then you will sweat, it should be positive, right?
About the deep basevoice JD Sumner (a member of The Stamps Quartet) he is the Basso Profundo, I think it's called that, it is the deepest base singer there is.
A video about him helping others, look at this: ua-cam.com/video/CrJ1c9tm-C0/v-deo.html
Elvis made a show where all the money went to build the Memorial after Pearl Harbour, he talked to the nations about taking the Poliovaccin, Elvis took the first injection himself, he helped by donating a big amount of money to St Jude hospital, they fight against cancer (especially children with), he also gave away juwelery, gave away cars, he even gave away some houses to total strangers.
Elvis started an organization that helps people to get out of Homelessness (Presley Charitable Foundation), this organization helps people even now close to 50 years after he passed away.
A thing that you perhaps did not know: Elvis ALMOST NEVER did a show OUTSIDE OF USA, yes he did sing a few times in Canada: 4 concerts, 2 in Toronto, 1 in Ottowa and 1 time in Vancouver (during the 50:s?).
When the Aloha From Hawaii (Live in Honolulu 1973) was showed it had 1.5 Billion viewers from around the whole world and 3.7 billion people lived on earth at this time, so it was close to 1/3 of all of the population on earth that wiewed the show, it was the first time a single artist was shown LIVE around the globe.
Video of Mohammad Ali speech after Elvis died:
    ua-cam.com/video/PO8Kq_3KTyI/v-deo.html
I have to say that I loved being at Graceland and seeing his home, first we were at the house in Tupelo where he lived in his early years, he was born there !
You don't have a guide taking you on a tour, you can go all over yourself, but stay outside of the ropes and do not attempt to go upstairs, the outside is huge, so is the house, but you don't realise that from the front of the house.
I don't regret for a second that I was there, or that I stood at his grave site and said out loud that this is for the humanitarian Elvis/the person/the man and then I gave him a military salute, the others there just looked at me and asked if I didn't like his music.
So I told them that he was clearly one of the best singers and artists ever, but I loved his big heart more, he helped so many people without getting credit for it, he didn't want the credit of helping others, he did it out of love and respect and to me that is what true charity is all about.
This PLACE (GRACELAND) should be a protected part of music history and also American history forever, I think that people will keep coming for years and years and years to come !
Elvis did lots of things for America to, he helped to avoid getting Polio (he took the vaccin in a tv show that made the intrest for taking the vaccin go from 0,6 % to 80 % in 6 months), he also helped in the figth to defeat Cancer by helping to build up St Judes children cancer treatment clinic, he also helped to build the Memorial over Pearl Harbour and many other things!

Love to the music, he never called himself King! That came from the awards given for all three gospel, rock and roll and country. I believe no one else had done that.

It's wonderful you were able to make up your own mind upon hearing and seeing things like this. I'm from England and have been an Elvis fan for 50 years and there is no way I would be had been I ever suspected that he was a racist in any way. It should occur to people that he employed the best people for their jobs from, singers to housekeeper's, maids, to cooks and nurses regardless of where they were from or the colour of their skin. Don't forget he grew up near Shake Rag listening to blues guys singing on their porches and later in beale street outside clubs listening to balck musicians like BB King. Where did you people think was going to get his 'thing' from? Thankyou again for your open mind and a brilliant video, god bless you xx

Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, and the 1950s Doo Wop were the beginning of Rock N Roll - mostly Black musicians. Elvis and Billy Haley were in that group (although White)

Ironically, Elvis hated the nickname “the King” and would not allow it to be used in his presence. If someone called him the King to his face, he'd say “No, no. Jesus Christ is the King. I'm just an entertainer.”

Elvis never wanted to be called The King. He said there is only one King and that was Jesus.
