PSP was awesome. Even though Sony didn't "win" against the DS (which itself was a great device), it still sold 80 million units and has a huge number of good games. My top 3 game recommendations: • Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake This is exactly the same as the original PS3 game but with extra content - a longer campaign, more modes, and exclusive maps. Supposedly the online multiplayer servers are somehow still up but I haven’t been able to verify that myself. • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Like Fat Princess, this is a full port, albeit the PS2 version instead of 3, but I dare say this is the superior version of the game if you don’t care about graphics. Longer campaign, and extra modes outside of it including a PSP exclusive one, all in portable form. Only downside is no Dark Side ending DLC. • Coded Arms 1 This launch title was highly ambitious for its time. It’s an FPS with compromised controls, yes, BUT: it uses procedurally generated level design. I think it’s the only game on the platform to do anything like this. While the controls can be wonky, I’ve spent a lot of down time grinding this game. My PSP experience for me is playing the _Assassins Creed: Bloodline,_ which is the most underrated entry of the series. Though, I never finished the game because the Witch boss battle used to scare me as a kid. Looking back, the Witch is not as scary than what my kid self made out to be, but she's definitely the toughest boss to beat (due to how freakishly fast she is and how cramped the room is), but at least I managed to finished the game last year (via on an emulator). That experience is such a fun rollercoaster ride.

God Eater also has co-op up to 4 players and you can share avatars, so you can bring your friend's god eaters as npc to help you besides the main characters. Some other games I enjoyed where: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, alone or with friends, Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault which allowed to divide players into complete two different missions simultanously and had more aircraft customization than other ace combat games. Then, Killzone Liberation while being underrated for not being a first-person shooter, it felt like a metal gear solid game to me with the top-down camera, many challenges to unlock lots of upgrades, collectables to unlock more weapons and even upgraded versions of them and co-op up to 2 players.
Playing LocoRoco was so fun back in the day, really enjoyed the theme and physics! Crush reminds me of those 2D / 3D Flash Games, really unique concept. Great job on this showcase guys!
I actually recommend giving Crush 3D a go: it's not as distinct as the original but it's dirt cheap, the 3D effect is nice, and the gameplay is still just as good.
The PSP's library has so many great titles that it surely would require it split in many parts. At the time, I also enjoyed SFA3 Max, THPS Project 8, GTA VCS, NFS Carbon: Own the City, Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter, Ghost Recon: Predator, Tetris (EA), DBZ: Another Road, NBA Ballers Rebound, the list goes on and on. I think emulators and PS1 games were played just the same, the PSP just have many options, even ports, if Super Mario 64 was ported over back then, it would had blown my mind, only recently it got ported, which is still amazing to see.
I should point out, in relation to Galaga Arrangement in Namco Museum Battle Collection, one major new addition to the game that you didn't mention is that you can actually get two of your ships captured, and when you get both of them back, your ship gets a second more powerful transformation. There's quite a few different ship combinations you can get, such as combining two of the same type to get a more powerful version (like a 5 bullet spread or an even faster rapid-fire ship), or you can mix up two different ship types to get a more mixed combination (such as a rapid-fire spread shot or rapid-fire "super shot" as you put it). I think at least some people who play Galaga Arrangement on PSP don't even know that this mechanic exists (if a few longplays I've seen on UA-cam of the game are anything to go by), and it's a shame since the different ship combinations and experimenting with them make the game a lot more fun to play in my opinion. It's honestly one of my favorite versions of Galaga and I tend to replay it quite often.
No Grand Theft Autos, no Monster Hunter, but that's ok. People don't seem to realize this isn't a top list or any of the sort. This is a great video of random PSP games and it is nice to see something with variety for a change.
Thank you, I think you're the only person that watched that understood that. I actually addressed it in the follow up, which is out now on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/M3YlI3MzykI/v-deo.htmlsi=toEoj-hJVTvwd73c
I liked 5, but it's definitely one of the weaker entries. Mask of the Sun, on the other hand... yeah no. I really liked the writing in the fan translation (as unremarkable as the story can be), but the gameplay... ugh. Only played a bit of PS2 Ys IV, but so far it's not much better. The map design feels more shallow and the combat system feels a bit sluggish.
@@DeskoDev Yeah, Mask Of The Sun and the PS2 remake are both frickin' awful. I've recently played The Dawn Of Ys and it's just a way better game, I'd say it's a good alternative to Memories Of Celceta
You're welcome. I wish more people would talk about Crush. I wish I could do a better job of talking about Crush. It's admittedly a little over my head, but I always knew it was quality.
I’m really loving EA Replay, lately. It has Mutant League Football, Haunting: Starring Polterguy, all 3 Road Rashes, and more! And it lets you play some of them against another PSP user without them needing to also have the game!!
It's a solid collection, but my main issues with it is some of the emulation errors. Plus the Road Rash games have entirely different soundtracks for some reason. Still, was like the 3rd PSP compilation I ever bought. I don't think most of them have ever had re-releases except for on there.
the PSP and Wii have a similar problem to me in that I love the game library but I hate using the original console, for the Wii it's the sensor bar, av cables, and finding batteries for the wiimote and for the psp it's the long load times, the memory stick not working sometimes and both systems are also really loud while reading discs
SSX On Tour is a personal PSP favourite. It's by no means a direct home console port, but it's really close to the home versions in terms of both visuals and core gameplay. Also has a fantastic selection of licensed music. Outrun 2006 is also a fantastic shout, in that it's still impressive to have a near-pixel-perfect port of a game designed for a considerably more powerful console (the original Xbox) on a portable console barely 2 years after the original Outrun 2 came out.
Damn, I spent 100h on that Got Eater and I don't know if it's 50% of the story or not. Love it so far, combat is harder than Monster Hunter. Edit: I pre-installed GE2 on my Vita and GE3 on my Switch LOL
The Silver PSP2000 Daxter bundle was the 1rst video game system I ever bought myself. Such a cool device! Loved the metalflake paint. Did eventually get the PeaceWalker 3000 when ole Silver developed some issues. Played a ton of Guilty Gear and watched a lot of AVGN on them. :)
the God Of War PSP games are also on PS3 as the God Of War Origins Collection and you can get this collection separate on PS3 or as part of the God Of War Saga set for PS3 which contains God Of War 1, 2, the bonus content for 2, 3, Ghost Of Sparta, and Chains Of Olympus, Ascension is separate on PS3, and 3 remastered is on PS4 along with 4 and Ragnarok and Valhalla, Ragnarok and Valhalla are also PS5
Technically it isn't a sequel, since the story is entirely different. It's the same game, but more cartoony and many of the levels are somewhat out of order in each theme.
Midnight Club 3 was the first game in the series to feature licensed vehicles thst you can drive, it's technically not the first gsme to feature them entirely, as the first Midnight Club game had it's intro mostly shot in live action and featured 2 vehicles driven by teo members of the illegal street racing group Mischief. Heck, even the cover for the first game featured those two cars from the group. Also, another recommendation for the PSP being Split/Second Velocity, an almost One to One port of the console namesake, but using many aspects from the E3 and Beta versions of the game, including a new track that was once planned for Split/Second proper, but was scrapped.
God of war chains of Olympus was my first psp game my dad bought me as a kid I don't know how I almost completed the main story but this game and the entire franchise will always be my favorite in gaming
I wanted to love Dracula X Chronicles, but I really wish they had had the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night available from the get-go instead of locking them behind cryptic secrets in the very difficult 3D Rondo remake
"Ys 7 best action rpg" I prefer Star Ocean 1&2, (or even better, FF7 Crisis Core and Monster Hunter Unite). I would like to add one more game, Pinball Classics, Williams Collection. It's a good pinball emulator. It's just like the original pinball machines you can find in a bar or so.
Is Star Ocean an action RPG? I own both of them but didn't get very far in them when I tested them, I don't even remember getting into a battle tbh. And yeah both the Pinball collections on PSP are fantastic, they're not included here because I think they're still better elsewhere (like on Wii etc.) and they kinda pale in comparison to Pinball FX and of course, the real machines.
@@FrameRater there's surprisingly a lot of content in it. Not only do you get a lot of customization options for vehicles but you also have many achievements to unlock. And that's not mentioning a very clear art style that the game is going for
I have very found memories of the PSP and a few of these games. There were so many basically better versions of DS games here and some decent console ports here. I would say I don't understand why certain multiplatform games came to DS, but not PSP, despite PSP being the more powerful system, but then I realize the smarter decision was usually on DS because that's where more of the money was. I used to think the PSP games didn't age as well, but really I think the handheld itself just has some issues these days, at least in my experience. I think aging has made things like the circle pad and the battery not be as good. And to answer a question about ATV Offroad Fury on PSP; yes, Pro is the better game than Blazin Trails. Pro is basically ATV OF 4, with some features taken out. But Blazin Trails is still a good one.
While I love PSP games I really don't think that the PSP itself is the best way to play them. Putting aside all the other perks of emulation just being able to play the games with a proper analogue stick is often, and forgive the pun, a game changer. My PSP still gets use because I like to play UMD movies, it's weird that I don't like playing the games on the PSP hardware but do the movies. Top three games for me would be: Lunar the Silver Star. I actually kind of regret playing this version of the game first as its made it difficult to go back to the Mega-CD or Playstation versions, which I want to do in order to keep visual consistency with Eternal Blue. Lunar on the PSP is for me the definitive version of the game. Persona 3 Portable. While having the cut-scenes turned into text panels is a visual downgrade this is another game I think is better than the console version. The game on PS2 often felt like it was wasting my time but with P3P the simplifications made to the systems just make everything more fun for me as it is a bit more immediate. Plus having the option to have the female MC is a great one. The third spot is a tough one and I'm going to go with the 3rd Birthday simply because I don't want every game on this top three being a RPG. The 3rd Birthday is one of those games that just works better when played with a proper analogue stick.
Yoooo can you please do a video analysing the cancelled Serious Sam Third Encounter (Serious Sam 2 Remake) leaked pre alpha gameplay and screenshots, had no idea it even existed until today. 16 minutes of good stuff though
God Eater Burst was something that really appealed to me, but I bounced straight off the game when I got it. Tried it again a few years back and could not get into it. Maybe Monster Hunter isn't for me. I thought I heard the Power Stones weren't great on PSP. They definitely look worse and I thought that they ran worse too. I got into Wipeout via the Omega Collection, super fun racer. Crush also looks great, love that dark gritty art style, the twisted buildings and green pallete give me Psychonauts vibes, which I love.
Power Stone Definitely looks and runs a bit worse on PSP but I think the extra content makes up for it. I didn't mention it, but all of the vmu games are available.
@@PhilipMarcYT Eh, Sony already had experience with small discs from their minidisc format, plus flash memory was still stupidly expensive in 2005. UMDs could hold 900 MB on each layer and up to two layers per disc. According to an old New York Times article I found, 1 GB flash cards cost $50-$75 in early 2005, while PSP games retailed for $40. So you’d be paying 1.5-3x the cost of a game for the storage alone. As someone who bought PSP games when they were new, I, for one, am very glad they went with discs instead of flash.
@@PhilipMarcYTFlash memory was still crazy expensive when the PSP launched, like $60/GB. Most PSP games cost $40 and were on 1.8 GB discs, so you’d be paying ~3x as much just for the storage alone. Sure, discs are noisy and power hungry, but they were also so much cheaper
I did listen to it on its own, it's not terrible, but if you have to hear that guy shouting for 20 seconds every time you boot the game or scrolling through the menus you will think poorly of it lol
The PSP version of Asphalt 2 is a remake, I would enjoy it more than the original DS/N-Gage version if it weren't for that awfully different soundtrack
I didn't know it was a remake. But the issues with the PSP release applies with the N-Gage and DS versions, since there is only one song in the menu (Lift Me Up by Moby, which is a pretty great song) and I think you can't turn it off either.
the dual SD card memory stick adapters are also notoriously fragile, mine cracked and split apart from only very, very very occasional ejections and i had to replace it with a single card
Hi! I know you've done some emulation features in the past. Have you found a way to make Portable Apple (PYAE) work on PSPs running 6.61 firmware? It crashes every time I attempt to run it.
Another PSP video for a UA-camr I like and yet still no one has mentioned the actual best PSP game. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, great combo of fighter and RPG with great customization and enough content to last you for hundreds of hours, go play it.
If you mean the arcade original no, at least not in ghosting form. I can see how I didn't explain that efficiently enough, as they do flee if there's a path available already.
Persona 3 Portable is on the list. I own the other two but I haven't played them a whole lot. I considered including portable in this video but everybody talks about it and it seems like a lot of people already know about it so I left it out.
Yeah that one's fire, I played it for a little bit when I reviewed Ark of Napishtim on my Channel. The only reason it's not on here is because I've played Seven more and I try not to recommend things I've played for under 4 hours
Not just that, but it's got some neat features that aren't in the original PC version. It's a really nice port, though it's also considerably easier than the original. The PSP version was used as the basis for the more recent currently-Japan-exclusive home console ports too (Switch last year, PS4 and PS5 last week).
@@PSPMan Personally, I consider it better than Ark Of Napishtim in multiple ways. That game's console versions were handled by Konami, and their port for the PSP was...uhh, kinda crap lmao
@@mortenera2294 Yeah we're on the same page dude, Ark of Napishtim's PSP port was horrible lol. I talked about Oath in that video cause it has very similar gameplay but runs correctly on PSP. It's still left out, but I talk about why in Part 2. Basically I'm not familiar with the series and am just now getting into it with Generations Ultimate on Switch. Plus, people already know about Monster Hunter and the goal of my entries was to showcase games people weren't familiar with. You know that the streaming $200 PS device can apparently play PSP games? Yep, guess it runs Android in the background. Instead of wasting $200 on that, buy a Backbone One PS Edition and most phones these days (Pixel 7a and so on) can play PS2, GCN, PSP, etc without any probs. Pretty cool. I didn't mention the legendary DC because phones from years ago can already play it smoothly. 😀 By the way, Apple gamers, welcome to the party even though it took years and years due to Apple's stubborness. 😜

ssx on tour on psp is basically just portable ssx 3 and that's what makes it so great
I love the PSP so much and i love that you've been covering it so well. Best handheld of all time and vastly underrated in hindsight
It's vice City stories for me, lots of good memories with that one :)
You missed a chance to talk about the mercury games. For me, those feel like the psp. I got the first mercury game at launch with the psp. Fun times.
Honestly forgot all about them, otherwise I'd have included meltdown in here.
Playing PSP games on the steam deck is the definitive way to play its library. I love seeing upscaled psp games
No, the best way is on original hardware, the way it was meant to be played, on a 4.3 inch screen.

That's weird. I never experienced any tearing when I played Tomb Raider Anniversary on the PSP.
I think they emulated these games for the vid, I played both Anniversary and Legend on my PSVita and I haven't run into any tearing at all.
@@denzelkrocker1673
Same here.
the God Of War PSP games are also on PS3 as the God Of War Origins Collection and you can get this collection separate on PS3 or as part of the God Of War Saga set for PS3 which contains God Of War 1, 2, the bonus content for 2, 3, Ghost Of Sparta, and Chains Of Olympus, Ascension is separate on PS3, and 3 remastered is on PS4 along with 4 and Ragnarok and Valhalla, Ragnarok and Valhalla are also PS5
Wipeout Pulse is awesome. (btw, you can add your own mp3's if you like.)
Crush got a sequel on the 3DS called Crush 3D that might be worth checking out.
Technically it isn't a sequel, since the story is entirely different. It's the same game, but more cartoony and many of the levels are somewhat out of order in each theme.
I would love if after you’re done with this series you’ll compile the major parts into one longer video, in the same style as your ps vita video:)
Everytime you make an extremely indepth PSP vid, I feel things
Almost a full hour of PSP games?! You guys are spoiling us, for real
Midnight club looks like it's simulating driving without glasses. 👓😅
I agree with you! God eater is fantastic!
Hell yeah brother
23:10 I remember this game ❤
I broke my psp while trying to mod it into using USB C. Too bad, because you guys absolutely interested me in some games today!
I wanted to love Dracula X Chronicles, but I really wish they had had the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night available from the get-go instead of locking them behind cryptic secrets in the very difficult 3D Rondo remake
I would put Shift Extended against Crush any day.
I hear that eiffel 65 playstation song in the back
Can you guys do this again but with the GBA?
I'd love to.
Honestly thank you for the mp3loght pluck
Another PSP related video???!? I’m eating good tonight
I think Motorstorm: Arctic Edge deserves a mention tbh. I would argue it’s one of the best racing games on PSP
True, though I've only played it a little before.
@@FrameRater there's surprisingly a lot of content in it. Not only do you get a lot of customization options for vehicles but you also have many achievements to unlock. And that's not mentioning a very clear art style that the game is going for
Great video 👍
38:15 first time I've heard anyone define Maximo Park as "butt rock" (they really aren't)
Top three games for me would be:
Lunar the Silver Star.
43:51 is that the ceiling texure reflecting off the screens? for a second i thought the screens where toasted
yeah our house has that stupid speckled ceiling texture
22:40 BROOO LEONA IS A KING OF FIGHTERS CHARACTER !!
good to know its the last good metal slug, im gonna try it.
Yeah from what I can tell they wrote her into the Ikari Warriors canon along with Ralf and Clark
Yoooo can you please do a video analysing the cancelled Serious Sam Third Encounter (Serious Sam 2 Remake) leaked pre alpha gameplay and screenshots, had no idea it even existed until today. 16 minutes of good stuff though
I've thought of it
God Eater Burst was something that really appealed to me, but I bounced straight off the game when I got it.
@@PSPMan I thought the only extra content it added was just backporting 2's new features into the first game.
Oh god. I forgot about UMD's. That noise used to drive me nuts
Sony should have just used cards/carts instead like they did for the Vita.
it's so iconic to me, one of my favorite consoles
38:15 Apply Some Pressure by Maxïmo Park, a pretty good English Indie band, I don’t think its a bad song. 🙈
@@ChaseMC215 you can turn it off + there is race music
the dual SD card memory stick adapters are also notoriously fragile, mine cracked and split apart from only very, very very occasional ejections and i had to replace it with a single card
Great video
Hi! I know you've done some emulation features in the past. Have you found a way to make Portable Apple (PYAE) work on PSPs running 6.61 firmware? It crashes every time I attempt to run it.
Unfortunately no, I haven't explored more PSP emulators since making that old video. Still using the tried and true ones though.
Another PSP video for a UA-camr I like and yet still no one has mentioned the actual best PSP game. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, great combo of fighter and RPG with great customization and enough content to last you for hundreds of hours, go play it.
Where do you buy quality psp battery
I personally used Cameron Sino battery for my 1000. You can get it online, it's worth your money.
i❤psp🐐
I think most of the Ratchet games had PS3 ports
15:20 it's also in the original.
If you mean the arcade original no, at least not in ghosting form. I can see how I didn't explain that efficiently enough, as they do flee if there's a path available already.
Wake up babe framerater dropped a new video
Very good
This could not have come at a better time, I literally JUST bought a PSP and was hoping to hack it & fill it with games!
How do you have more than 7-8 category folders? I thought it was a hard limit
Not sure, I didn't do anything special.
Hey, if you ever do a round 2, may I reccomend you cover the persona trilogy on PSP (or is it quadrology), and the Patapon trilogy
Persona 3 Portable is on the list. I own the other two but I haven't played them a whole lot.
I considered including portable in this video but everybody talks about it and it seems like a lot of people already know about it so I left it out.
@@PSPMan ah, what about patapon then?
I've thought of including Patapon in our follow-up, it was almost in this video.
@@FrameRaterwe definitely need to include them. I own all three but I've barely touched them
@@FrameRater ah, well again, if you make a round 2 vid, definitely give those 2 serieses a mention, especially persona 1 and 2
Does Pixel junk coop still work? I'd play with ya! 😂
It isn't online but you can play locally using Ad-Hoc. The updated PS Vita version might still work online.
I am sad that Patapon wasn't on the list.
Probably will include in the PSPMan channel upload.
I looked at all 3 in the follow-up, the rhythm is still stuck in my head LOL

I'd really recommend including Ys: Oath In Felghana in the next video if you can. It's a great remake of the 2D original
Oath is on my list next to play in the Ys series, been finishing up Origin and Memories of Celceta on my Steam Deck.
*FrameRater why did you take down your VeggieTales reviews?*
I use my psp as a gba XL. Lol
Its Framerater! ❤
Yeah, framerater!
where patapon?
I covered the Trilogy in part 2

The screen tearing in Tomb Raider Anniversary is the worst I've ever seen
Ridge Racer and ridge racer 2>>>>>>asphalt
yay frame rater
Prinny 2 has the worst final boss ive ever played, a turbo controller cannot mash fast enough
Wouldn't doubt that, fun quirky game but a bit mechanically flawed imo. Frustrating in a bad way.
No Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? Bah I'm so disappointed..
It's still left out, but I talk about why in Part 2. Basically I'm not familiar with the series and am just now getting into it with Generations Ultimate on Switch. Plus, people already know about Monster Hunter and the goal of my entries was to showcase games people weren't familiar with. It's the same reason none of the Persona games got mentioned (although I do recommend 3 Portable)
ua-cam.com/video/M3YlI3MzykI/v-deo.htmlsi=toEoj-hJVTvwd73c
No mention of the Mega Man games? I'm pretty sure this is an actual crime.
They're still left out but I talk about why at the end of Part 2. Basically I'm aware those games are very good, but I don't own them. The level editor in Powered-Up looks fucking sick tho.

By the way, Apple gamers, welcome to the party even though it took years and years due to Apple's stubborness. 😜
