I still bring my Vita with me wherever I go to this day. As "portable" consoles like the Switch and Steam Deck get larger and larger, people seem to forget how wonderful it is to fit something like the PS Vita or the 3DS in your pocket. I hope one day we return to pocket sized gaming.

Same, one thing many people seem to forget is that smaller screens help disguising lower set graphics. Worst experience I've ever had was seeing Ridge Racer 2 on my PSP as it were running right behind it on my 24" PC screen. Even with all the postprocessing PPSSPP offers it looked worse than the tiny version.
I understand your point. For me personally, it is a good development though, as I have bad vision so I'm happy about larger screens and don't really care if I can put it in my pocket or a bag

As a former staunch supporter of UMDs myself, the medium did have quite a few downfalls. One factor left unmentioned was how often the UMD drives would fail over a few years of use. My 2000 model's drive nearly died completely after about 300 hours playing Dissidia.
There were just so many reasons to mod the PSP and load games from a memory card. Even if you didn't want to pirate

Although GBA, DS and 3DS were certainly similar, the 3DS used regular SD cards, so it was a lot better in that respect than proprietary cards

The psps memory was shared by Sony's cameras making it cheaper which is probably why it wasnt such a issue for a psp because there was many more in circulation
Yeh, the Memory Stick Pro Duos were shared by Sony's own digital cameras as well as their Walkman MP3 players - that's already three devices you could use them with.
And with that, SD adapters already existed, whereas making an adapter for a proprietary format which is used on one device is considerably harder, especially because of the size of the memory cards. Now it is possible to hack a Vita but as far as I know the adapter is on the game port and not on the memory card port.
I loved my PS VITA, I wasn’t allowed to have a phone back then, so I used this as my main handheld, used it for games, UA-cam, Facebook etc. The only 2 physical games I ever owned for It was LBP Vita and Persona 4 Golden. Still have it to this day, I use it for Roms and Emulators.
Same here, I didn't get a smartphone until senior year of high school so the Vita was my main way of getting online for a few years.

Me too! Netflix on it was great too, all the apps worked pretty well. LBP was amazing online and so fun with friends
I'm one of the people that always wanted a vita and either never had the cash for it or just lost interest when I could afford it, so I never got round to buying one. This was a great video for helping show me what I'd missed.

He actually left some good games out, this system is awesome! Mortal Kombat 9 (first one with x-rays/PS3 port), Assassin's creed 3 Liberation, Assassin's Creed Bloodlines (PSP game/basically Assassin's Creed 1.5), Gravity Rush, Unit 13, Resident Evil Revalations 2, Flame Over, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken - not to mention a large amount of your digital PSP games/movies/TV shows are playable on PS Vita.
A portable ps3 my boy
I owned a PS Vita slim for 4 years before giving it away to one of my friends. Mainly played God Eater Resurrection for over 300+ hours, only the right analog stick was making slight noises but it was still working as intended. Played some FFX on it too and that was fun too! Racing games was GT PSP and Ridge Racer PSP that was 60fps and almost look like it can be played on a PS2! Yea.
Oh by the way, I got a 32GB card for like $50 on black Friday along with the PS Vita slim. Over 300 bucks and no game too! Fuck those memory cards to the core.
They are too expensive now.
i wanted the vita SO BAD when i was 12 years old. it was pretty much the coolest thing i could imagine. years later i got a used one and i still think its a really cool console, but i only think its worth buying if you are willing to jailbreak the hell out of it. Great video!
A modded Vita is a must have for modded console collectors. The ability to play PS1, PSP and Vita games on the go on one system is absolutely fantastic.

Sony shot themselves in the foot over and over and over again with the Vita, and I hate it. I didn't get one until 2015, but I loved it thanks to all the support Japanese devs gave it and it being region-free. The memory card prices were and still are the absolute worst. Thank God for SD2Vita. And the PS store on Vita was never NOT a trainwreck to navigate.
sly cooper thieves in time on ps vita is great. it's impressive how they managed to port a ps3 game to a tiny handheld with pretty much no differences the only differences i see is the lack of outlines and 30fps cap but other than that it's great
yeah Thieves in time as a game you play is good, the only bad part is the actual narrative that contextualizes every stage being not on par with the previous games... which is a huge shame
The load times? I’m pretty sure it takes like 1 minute and 30 seconds to load something up, it’s why I’m fine with auto popping the platinum lol
AFAIK, this was a feature designed into the PS3/Vita SDK. Apparently Sony designed the SDK such that it was crazy easy to use the same assets and code in both PS3 and Vita versions of the same game, which was why there were a lot of Vita releases accompanying big PS3 games.

Always remember the weird feature where it would tell you about other people in your neighbourhood who also owned a PS Vita. you could chat to them too.
But Frobisher Says was one of my fave games, Sony's version of Wario Ware.
I remember Frobisher had a mini-game you could control with your eyelids by blinking.

This console was my obsession betweent like 2015-2019. Got around 100 physical games for it. I loved everything about the vita. I wish sony would give handhelds another shot
nah, smartphones have pretty much killed that market. I think the closest thing we'll get to a handheld console from now on is stuff along the lines of the Switch (or like gaming phones, if you want to count those)

9:34 You can fix that. In the settings, go to henkaku settings. You'll see an option labled "spoofed version". Select that, enter 3.73 and you should be good to go.

Worth noting that the PS Vita dev kit (PDEL-1000) has an HDMI output and can play retail games. Like combining the PS Vita and PSTV into one unit.

Little Big Planet Vita is the best LBP game in the series in my opinion and it's sadly underrated😢. I hope Sony will re-release it someday on a main console
It definitely is the best lbp game, while I’m still more nostalgic to the main series, lbp vita was just lbp2 and more. Man I love it. Can’t wait for the private servers we have to bloom.
It played like an enhanced version of LBP2 which was HUGE for a hand-held game, I absolutely loved it. So sad the servers are down, I would love to one day go back and play my old levels :(
Agreed. Everybody gives LBP2 its flowers and rightly so, but Vita is the same as LBP2 but with extra features, and in handheld form. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Vita failed because of expensive memory cards plain and simple. Why no internal storage? I would have bought one if it came with a memory card. To buy the system, uncharted and a memory card was too much money for me.
I would argue that the "big disaster" was Sony misidentifying the Vita as a disaster, thus creating a self fulfilling prophesy. There could have been other cost cutting measures made over time, and it could have stayed as a relatively niche but still successful system. From actual sales and impact, it's somewhat hard to argue that the Vita was a flop. Was the GBA a flop too because it was only on the market for a few years? No, because it sold a lot of games and we remember and think of it well. Was the Vita a flop because it was only on the market for a few years? Yes, because it didn't sell as many games, and we remember and think of it well. See the issue there? I prefer to look at cultural and industry impact over just regular sales numbers, and when I do so, it's hard to view the Vita as a "disaster".
Those executives can be made fun of now after seeing the success of the switch. The original plan for the vita was similar to how the switch worked.
Fun fact: The only reason I asked for a PS Vita for Christmas was for Minecraft. It was absolutely the best version of Minecraft on the go at the time. Granted, both the Nintendo Switch and then the Bedrock version soon overtook that position, but I love my Vita. It's now my dedicated Persona console.
I would love a p5 demake on it just to have all of the games on the same system. Minecraft was so awesome on the vita too man. Good times
After all these years, everytime I'm reminded that vita exists I still feel guilty for spending so much money to buy one. Literally played like 4 games for a month and then I chucked it into a drawer xd

I loved the vita. I’m pretty sure the majority of games I played on it were from PS plus, but it was still amazing. It was how I discovered Hotline Miami. HOWEVER, I have to dock some points off for not mentioning Touch My Katamari. It’s the best Vita exclusive IMO.
The vita was awesome, my favorite console for a long time. I owned pretty much every model, the 3G, the 1000, 2000, and I even had a PSTV at one point.
For me though, the Steam Deck is the PS Vita successor we never got, so its pretty much taken the place of my Vita at this point. Almost find it hard to go back to the small screen and lack of grips the vita has. Which is strange, the vita seemed massive in comparison to the PSP. Maybe someday handhelds will be the size of gaming laptops and we'll be talking about how small the steam deck and switch were 😅
The steam deck is absurdly large. It's fine for around the house, but it would be rather annoying to carry daily unless you also use it as your laptop for work.
Right now I'm trying to figure out where different devices fit in my life. Pc for gaming and pc vr, standalone vr setup too, then my switch for Nintendo games (I prefer to play on the switch instead of the pc due to the pick up and go functionality. My phone can handle ps2 gamecube etc emulation and anything less and even output to the TV at 4k easily. So that's a perfect portable retro console with an 8bitdo controller. It's a zfold 2 so the screen is glorious for retro games. No wide-screen patches needed. The switch is portable enough to go most places. But the one device that gives me the most games in the smallest sleakest, and most exclusive form is the vita. It's the go everywhere gaming beast. It's essential

You forgot to mention the PS TV, which was basically the Vita consoleized, the one big downside is you can't play the games that required heavy use of the touch screen (without custom firmware atleast), but hey it was great to use as a device to play digital copies of PS1 and PSP games. You'd think Sony would've tried to at least capitalized on the idea since things like the the Chromecast, the Firestick and Smart TVs were starting to take off, but nope, they pretty much abandoned it as soon as it was released.
honestly for me, my vita is the most fun console i've ever owned. i got it in 2012 for christmas and used it quite extensively. i made so many friends and had a blast everytime i used it. i recently "rediscovered" it and started playing with it again. i even got a new game! it's sad that sony ditched it so early since it had so much potential.
The PS Vita was - and well, still is - my Project DIVA machine. None of the games I bought for it clicked as much as F and F 2nd, and yet those two games alone were enough to make me not bring my 3DS to school for a few months. Even after I got a PS3 to play those games on, the Vita still is the one and only way I can play them on the go. Project DIVA F 2nd and X even cross-save between PS3/PS4 and Vita!
I have both a 1000 and a 2000. For some strange reason, the ergonomics of the 1000 - with it being _ever so slightly_ thicker than the 2000 - absolutely ruin the ergonomics for my hands, and I get severe cramps after mere minutes of play. No other handheld has made my hands and wrists hurt so badly; it's absolutely nuts. I don't have this issue at all with the 2000 though, so I'm kinda just... Stuck with it.
Edit: Another detail I just remembered - when I first got the PCH-1000 (I had the PCH-2000 first), I actually had to readjust my timings in the Project DIVA games slightly due to the screen's faster response time. That faster response time actually made the notes as they flew onto the screen appear choppier, because the PCH-2000's screen had smearing that smoothed out the individual frames.

As a massive fan of LBP, you honestly had to be there back when the games had a larger community. I found out a few months ago the servers died when I wanted to go on a nostalgia trip and now they feel pretty hollow. Personally I don’t care to know what the people left on the games even plan on doing now.
I was born in 98 and really only started playing video games in the early 2010s so I have zero connection to most of what you are talking about and that’s why I like your channel I get to quickly learn about a ton of games from consoles I never experiences beyond the most popular ones.
So take any console’s library from anytime before 2010 and run through all their games especially the mundane ones and I’ll be happy

the vita is the best handheld ever made. Im not talking software or peripherals. Just the handheld itself. Its sleek, powerful, has a great OS, and had OLEDs almost a decade before they were mass marketed. Its capabilities are still respectable hardware wise and in features (camera, music player, sd card space)

I bought a cheap PS Vita 2000 on eBay, modded it with the latest firmware even so I can play online and I did indeed get an SD2VITA cause fuck paying for those memory cards. The SD2VITA is a bit of a pain to set up I will admit but god it is SO worth it.
Should've mention an option to overclock the modded vita. It slightly affects battery life (for me it was like half an hour shorter at most) but makes games far more enjoyable as framerate becomes much better/stable, plus loading times become shorter so I think It's a good tradeoff. Also there's a homebrew app that allows you to change games resolution/target famerate in some games. Combined with overclocking some games become much better. Some examples: in NFS Most Wanted you could change resolution to almost native and it would still run in 30 fps while looking on par with ps3 version, WipeOut 2048 is able to run in 60 fps and it looks fantastic, Killzone could to run either in native res 30 fps or 60 fps. Also some broken ports like Jak (btw you could also change target framerate in first game to 30 (by default it's just 20)), Resident Evil Revelations 2 and Borderlands 2 become slightly more playable, but don't expect too much from them.
I got a PS Vita mostly to support the niche Japanese games long after SONY abandoned the handheld when the PS4 was released.
I got allot of good Japanese Imports as well as supported a fair few that were also released in English localization.
Though the PS Vita much like the PSP games I treasure the most are the ones I imported from Japan, the Anime style of games that I loved the most from the Queens Blade games on the PSP to the To Love Ru Darkness games on the PS Vita.
And there are a few hidden gems like Bullet Girls to Gal Gun Double Peace and even the Hyperdimension Neptunia series and spinoff games that had good support on the PS Vita.
I absolutely adore the PS vita even to this day. I was always a ds kid and didn't get a Psp until my teens. The DS has a special place in my heart and I love my 3ds too. But after I got a PSP I was hooked and wanted a vita. I still use it to this day. Its a perfect homebrew and emulation machine and also has an amazing library spanning several consoles. It honestly has the 3DS beat IMO.

Wow, this is honestly the first time I've ever heard someone claim they actually played games on their phone instead of a handheld console. That's honestly fucking wild. The general consensus really is that the extreme memory card prices, high price, bad battery, and lack of game support really were the reasons for Vita's failure, though. We know this to be true since 3DS did not have the same problems and had plenty of success.
I mean, I had the ability to buy a Vita at the time. I just chose to buy a 3DS instead and I played it (and other older handhelds) a ton at the time.
Anyway, great video. I highly recommend Gravity Rush if you ever can. It's definitely the best game on Vita, imo.
To be fair it came out when I was in college, which was a time of being financially cautious.
Smartphones were really popping off in 2011, Infinity Blade had launched, and people thought the 3DS was doomed too… until it was clear all the app store games sucked and wouldn’t get any better 😂 It seems obvious now, but back then even the Penny Arcade guys were making fun of the idea of toting a dedicated game device.

There's a level editor in Banana Splitz and it's the most bizarre way to make a level ever. You take a photo of something and the game tries to analyze the contours inside the image and builds a level out of that. You also need to shake the Vita for a bit before it can actually build the level, because of course you have to do that, and you can continue shaking it two more times, because of course you can. I still have no clue what shaking it does.
I recently rediscovered my Vita 1000 and 3DS which were resting in a storage box for years. After modding them, I feel they are going through a second youth and, honestly, I'm now enjoying them way more than I did when they were first released. I think we are lucky that the homebrew community has put so much love and support on these devices and today it's worth it to pick one of them (or both) if you can find a good second hand deal.

I remember getting Call of Duty and being so disappointed by it. Hostiles was kind of fun to see how far you could get, but I would always have preferred they made a zombies mode instead. Portable Kino (not that god awful Android port) would have been a huge improvement, in my opinion at least.

The Vita was probably my favorite handheld of all time. My previous favorite was the PSP, and the Vita plays PSP games soooo...
I badly need to do repairs to mine though. Battery is basically shot, right stick is wobbly as hell and lacks sensitivity, left stick feels mushy vertically, one of the speakers is blown somehow and I need a new charger for it, it still works but it's worn through the outer shielding. It's not that it's low quality I just played the thing A TON.
My only disagreement on the thing though is that it's far too tiny. But I have huge hands o that's probably got something to do with it. I got the Nerf Power Armor case for it and that makes it about perfect for me.
Modding the thing is also a must, especially with the ever looming store shut down. Last I messed with it you could still play online and access the store and stuff too.
My biggest complaint with modding it is actually Adrenaline, this may have been fixed but again, last I played with it, it introduced tons of input lag to PSP games.
All that said, with a Steam Deck order coming in the next couple months, I kind of doubt I'll see a lot more use of my Vita. It didn't have a ton of absolute must-have exclusives, there were a lot of good games but nothing really hit classic status to me that wasn't available elsewhere, and in its final days of regular use I was basically just playing PSP games on it, and the Steam Deck is going to do that better, currently if I feel the need I tend to just emulate them on PC. Plus some quantity of them is coming to PS5 so maybe even that would be somewhat unnecessary, though, I would miss the performance and HD texture patches/mods.
All in all it's an absolute tragedy that Sony abandoned the Vita so early on. If they'd gone with generic memory cards and charging/comms cables, they would've likely sold a lot more of the things. Another big problem it had is there was a ton of games promised for it early on that never showed, for example the Monster Hunter series was originally slated to continue on Vita but ended up on 3DS after a long silent period, I actually bought the Vita FOR that so that was disappointing, and I basically missed the whole 3DS catalogue of MH games, wasn't at all a fan of that thing. Monster Hunter pulled the same shit with the PS3 being its target platform after PS2 then going radio silent and popping up on Wii. A lot of stuff I got the thing for also just never came out in the west, like Phantasy Star Nova (which is SORTA playable with an import but a ways into the game the language barrier becomes insurmountable in the base building system). Basically all the stars aligned against the Vita which by all accounts should have succeeded but basically nothing that actually mattered came through for it, its creators, developers, 3rd party support and marketing all gave up on it while the fanbase never did, but the fans just weren't enough.
I remember buying the 3g vita at a discount shortly after release because our local best buy was having a going out of buisness sale. I loved the thing and really wish sony actually supported it for longer. Killzone and freedom wars were amazing at the time, but i could never get remote play to work well on it. It would work ok if i was at home with my ps4, but due to the lack of range of movement of the analog sticks, it made aiming in games without gyro support undoable. Trying remoteplay anywhere else besides my home would either simply not work, or the input lag would be so bad that you couldnt feasibly play anything. The only other dissapointment for me was the absolute abundance of jrpgs on the system, as, im not much of a fan of them outside of freedom wars and persona. If you do like jrpgs or visual novels, the vita is still one of the best systems to buy

I was a hardcore vita boy. I bought one day one, got the expensive memory card, bought a shitload of the games, it was great. Genuinely the way I played Persona 4, Dragonquest Builders (which was exclusive at the time) and Minecraft. I even plat'd Hotline Miami 2 on the thing.

The Vita is such a sad story, it was like Sony wanted the damn thing to fail.
And maybe they did and that's why we haven't seen any other portable outings from them since?
If I remember correctly the PSPs memory sticks were made by brands other than Sony, that probably helped it a lot on top of there not being any proprietary dongles.

1) Talking about battery life, have you considered the fact that the console is over 10 years old at this point and the battery probably isn't at its best? Or are the numbers taken from back then? My Vita also lasts about 4 hours or a bit more depending on the game, but like yours, unless the battery has been changed, it's probably not at full capacity anymore
2) I don't know if you know, but if you search for vita guide (not adding the magic keyword because YT's filter filters this but not real spam) is the most updated way to mod your psvita, remove the update prompt and, especially, the guide for SD2Vita is extremely simple and well explained compared to the screenshot you sent in the video
Also, if someone is not aware, PSVita's analog sticks are SO GOOD because apparently they're hall-effect analogs designed specifically for the console, meaning they are way less prone to drift (if not completely immune to that) compared to the usual sticks used in modern consoles (which are made by 2 companies)
The Vita sticks are legendary imo. Only flaw was no L3/R3. Switch feels awful, inaccurate, and it drifted straight out of the box PLUS the buttons and stick barely respond unless you push them significantly more than you'd want to.
Vita buttons and sticks are all accurate and responsive. It's a great system, Soyny's last great console (that's not a typo).
@@Vulpas L3/R3 could be done by using the upper left/right corners of the rear touchpad, there's some gripshells for the Vita 1000 and 2000 that come with optional plates that attach to the touchpad (double-sided tape) and provide triggers to perform L3/R3, useful if doing Remote Play over the LAN to a PS3 or PS4 (such as playing Persona 5 Royal in bed and your PS4 Pro is sitting in the living room).
Downside to using those plates is you lose on the full function of the rear touchpad for Vita games, but with PS4 Remote Play the touchscreen replicates the DS4's trackpad.

PS Vita's expected battery life while gaming was 3 to 5 hours. 4 hours is right in line with expectations, not the result of an old and degraded battery.

For example, if you get 4 hours with all that stuff turned off and low brightness then it surely can be battery degradation. It's not like batteries are eternal anyways, and after 10 years there is no way they didn't degrade even a little bit.

I got a PSVita for my 13th Birthday. Now I am [REDACTED] years old, and I still have it. Actually, I bought a 2nd one because I broke the rear touch pad of the 1st one when trying to replace its battery.
I loved the Vita. It's a great console if you like indie games or japanese games. Sadly those kind of games won't convince the general public to buy one.
I still play my Vita sometimes, I love it. It's also the only console I can play Shinovi Vs on. The Ninja Gaiden Sigma port was outstanding on it and it had the best version of Street Fighter X Tekken
I liked that the Vita port of Ninja Gaiden 2 allowed you to switch the gore/dismemberment back on from the Xbox 360 original. We still don't got that option in the recent Ninga Gaiden Master Collection for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and pc.
As someone who runs a pair of Vita 110x's (the 3G/WiFi Phat), VitaTV (Jpn import) & PSTV (Aus Retail) - An alternate to using the SD2Vita for the 110x units is a PSVSD board to replace the 3G modem - once you've downgraded to 3.60, got Henkaku working as a coldboot install. After you got the PSVSD set up you no longer need the Vita MemCard but can still use legit Vita Gamecarts along with running downloads and homebrew off the PSVSD (you can also dump your gamecarts to the PSVSD as well).
Additionally, if you have the VitaTV/PSTV microconsole (just a Vita 2000 built to hook up to TV) - with CFW you can run the system off a USB thumbdrive instead of needing a SD2Vita. Downside is you might need a USB hub to hold the thumbdrive and a cable to plug your DS3/DS4 in to in order to resync the controller to the microconsole if it's been a while since last used.
I absolutely loved, and still love, my Vita. Tons of hours spent on the Sword Art Online games, the Chaos Rings RPGs, and it even got me into Phantasy Star Online 2, which has become my favorite game series of all time. The fact I can play PSP and PS1 games on it makes it one of my favorite handhelds ever, and I still play it pretty consistently. WAY more portable then the Switch while still delivering some great games. Compromised from their other forms, but that makes it more fun i find.

Bought a Vita at the end of January ish this year because there was a good handful of games I wanted to play on it (via hacking, because no way I'm buying all those expensive games). Turns out there was only like... around 6 ish (Vita) games I *actually* enjoyed on the system (of the ones I tried anyway), and none of those are actually exclusive, so yeah. Kinda put it down after trying everything I wanted to, but I still like to use it at times for PSP or GBA emu stuff.
Neat little system if you wanna do homebrew/emulation or play games like Gravity Rush on the go but (GR feels really cool on Vita btw)... It's otherwise kinda meh imo. At least nowadays where its better games are basically on every other system.

Love my Vita, got it in 2016 or so. It doesn’t get much play now because of my Switch and PS5, but I still have a special place in my heart for it. I paid like $140 for the OLED model and about 7 games. Tearaway, FFX/X2 Remaster, Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, Persona 4, and Assassins Creed I think. Was worth ever penny and a great deal. I’ve been a Sony guy since the late 90’s, but the way they tossed the Vita aside was horrible. I’m glad there’s still a dedicated fanbase. I wish we found out what the Vita really could have been, hell there was even a Bioshock game in development, crazy. Thanks for the coverage of this underrated and almost forgotten console.
Choose whether you want to collect and play game cards or play (and maybe but probably not buy) entirely digitally with an SD2Vita. The Vita OS only expects there to be one internal storage device, and that's where it's going to write the Home Menu's database. You can change the mount point of your Vita memory card (if you have one) and use it for the database instead, but that's a lot of trouble to go through and defeats the purpose anyway.
I turned on my Vita for the first time in ages last night, the music started up, and the nostalgia punched me right in the face.

I remember well being all excited for the Vita after having so much fun with my PSP-2000.
Then infos about those proprietary memory cards came in which were brutally overpriced... and that's how my journey with the Vita ended before it even began.

I still want to get a vita sometime. Got my modded 3ds, modded wii, Google TV for n64 and Android games and patched switch. Maybe I'll pick a vita up this year.

One other storage option I don't see mentioned very much, PSVSD. For those with a 3G model like myself, you can take out the 3G module and place an SD card reader instead. Double that with an extender that fits into the SIM card slot and you got authentic SD card function! It's worth checking out 😊
I had such high hopes for the Vita and I very much enjoyed my time on it. Eventually though I slowly stopped playing it cause while there are some good Vita originals, I ended up mainly just playing ports of other games. I got the original model Vita the day after its release. The next year, my friend accidentally caused us to fall into some water and my Vita was in my pocket at the time, so...that was that. The next year I got a Vita Slim (or 2000 I guess) and I had it for a few years. I did eventually sell it though since I hardly played it anymore. Sometime later I got another cause I missed my original, but I soon realized how much the good games cost and how much the memory cards were. I had plenty of games I could still download, but I wasn't going to spend a lot of money on a big memory card or the now overpriced games. So as of now, I no longer have a Vita. It did have a good run with me, but Sony should've treated it better.

Where is call of duty, wwe 2k series besides the bad wwe 2k18, madden NFL series, a tekken fighting game, and other games that are on other platforms but aren't on the switch? Seems to me that switch has some flaws and is a underpowered 30fps crappy kiddy toy and Nintendo now is a garbage company.

One thing that gets forgotten with the Vita is the Playstation Mobile initiative. There was a ton of games made for that, which are all but gone, unless you still have them backed up somewhere and play them on a Vita that already activated the corresponding license.
My favorites that I remember were Tokyo Jungle Mobile, Bike Rider DX, Velocity, Life of Pixel, rymdkapsel, Out of Mind, Aqua Kitty and Rock Boshers. A few got native Vita releases and Velocity even got a sequel, but most are gone.
Also shout out to Destiny of Spirits, the short lived monster collecting game that used geolocation data, and had great presentation + music from Q games.

I had the vita since launch and supported it the whole way through Sony dropped the ball with this console. It is and continues to be(with the homebrew dev scene) my favorite handheld of all time I have my vita in my car so if I'm ever stranded somewhere I have something on hand to play. I cannot say enough good things about the console... Also the vita tv was amazing as well

Biggest upgrade for anyone getting a Vita today is definately a SD2Vita card, it allows you to put a SD card into the game slot. Yes, you lose the ability to put in game cards in as quick as without one, but since you need to mod your Vita to use a SD2Vita anyways, you can also rip your physical games and put all of them on the SD card.

Anyway, I like the Playstation Vita well enough. I've got two Vita 1000s and two Playstation TVs, which nobody wanted to touch at launch but is redunkulously expensive now. Watching this well done video makes me want to go back and redownload all the games I bought digitally, but since my systems are all hacked, it's hard to get into the online store to get them. And I can't really play cart games on my main Vita since that one's got the SD card adapter. If only I got the system with the 3G feature, so I could have both an SD card and a cartridge inside!

My best friend gave me his Vita 2000 back in high school and I remember modding it that same night and loading a bunch of homebrew and emulators on it. According to my friend I got more use out of it in one night than he did in years lol. It's nice to pick up and play from time to time, though semi-recently I accidentally turned on my Vita without the SD2VITA inserted and I lost all my bubbles 😔

Back in 2017 I made the odd decision of jumping onto Vita collecting and it helped me get back into handheld gaming after the initial launch of the 3DS and the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 really soured me, kinda a lame excuse to dismiss the console but that era of handheld gaming did not look so hot when mobile phones were perceived as the next big thing. In any case, I didn't spend time at home a lot since I was always working so I didn't game on my older consoles or PC as much so I wanted something I could play at work and decided that the Vita was a good investment. This was just around the time games were getting a tad bit expensive and Limited Run were pushing out some solid Vita releases. I can't tell you how many games and imports I've collected since then, imports were especially a money sink when I learned about Asian English physical releases, and it also helped me get into visual novels as well like Danganronpa and the Nonary Games, one of my favorite handhelds of all time.
Working a game store back then, I remember so many people complaining about the PSP not having a 2nd analog stick.

It really felt like the public was just looking for reasons to despise the Vita.

And anything that wasn't perfect had 0 forgiveness. The Vita was imperfect, but never given a chance at all.
I just don't get why Sony engineered a whole new memory format when the Memory Stick M2 micro (the one used in the PSP Go) was literally smaller (both are apparently 15*12.5 mm, but the M2 is 1.2 mm thick and the PSV one is 1.6 mm thick). Of course, better case scenario would've been to use microSD (microSD had been a proven technology since 2005, with a 32 GB microSD card costing around $30 or so in 2012 according to an article I found, as opposed to the RRP of ~$120 for a 32 GB PSV card)
I wonder if choosing to go with a more open standard as opposed to their proprietary one may have saved the Vita from its sad existence here in the West.

got my Vita in January (this year) but i had to wait until my Birthday to finally use it... tried some of the Vita titles and now i mostly play any of R* titles that are either PSP or Vita ports (unless i gets some feels to play some of the games i still have yet to play through)

Even though I never owned the handheld myself, I will however always fondly remember this system for being home to what I still call it, even now, "The 2006 FIFA World Cup of Anime Games", this being none other than the horrific life-affecting tragedy known as "Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni", a game that I was so incredibly excited for, only to watch in sheer horror when my country suddenly banned it before release, and I was like "WHAT?! How! HOW CAN THEY DO THIS! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!". My hype towards the game turned so ugly, especially after its Steam version got blocked in my country only two months after release, and then even landing on the dreadful "index" only 9 months after this.......
And as you can imagine, I was indeed deeply appalled by this ban considering that the majority of the many games that my country banned over the years were violent video games from the likes of Postal, to even Dying Light, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Dead Rising etc. But banning an anime game that doesn't fall into the same criteria that the former games got banned for hit my country at an absolutely EA-like all-time low for me.
And this game is the only thing about the PS Vita that I will always consider very memorable, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

Man I loved my Vita right up until the memory card died. They're fucking expensive to replace and, at the time, there was no alternative but the official memory card.
That memory card, in my opinion, seriously held back the system's popularity because it probably convinced people to stay away from buying games they wouldn't be able to easily store, or getting the system altogether. They should have just let it use micro SD, something easier to replace.
I love the 1000 model but I started getting an error that would turn off my console and I ended up breaking something trying to fix it. So now I got a 2000 model, but I was at least able to finally get a Japanese one this time around.
Disagreed but also agreed with a few things you covered regarding the PS Vita. Overall a good video. But it sounded like you didn't care for the system and the games you had didn't enthrall you. COD and Resistance were not great but they were a competent. Probably the best shooters were Killzone and Unit 13. Metal Gear Soild collection were good 3rd person shooters. Borderlands 2 on the Vita ran slow, but okay after the final game patch. I think it averages around 30 fps, but will dip to 25ish after the patch. Then there are a lot of FPS/3RD Person shooters on the PSP that can be played on Vita with mapped controls. But overall, the Vita ended up geared towards fighters, RPGS, Visual Novels, platformers in the end. But that's the market of were it was most popular.
Crossbuy and Play. There were a lot of titles that were crossplay/buy between the Vita and PS3/4. So even if you didn't have a lot of friends on the Vita, you could of played with friends on their PS3/4s. Heck you could also have voice chat while doing so.
Well the Vita had great intital sales but it tapered off dramatically in markets outside of Japan. Like many users, I blame lack of marketing and use of proprietary memory cards.
The Vita was ahead of its time. The Vita was geared towards connectivity with friends. 3G wireless was awesome. You could text and voice chat with friends while out and about. Blutooth connectivity for microphone and audio headsets were a necessity in the city, but somewhere quiet, and the built in speakers and mic were enough. Oh and the GPS based games and program called NEAR were innovative. I made a few friends using the Near app. Was a interesting experience. It was kind of like Nintendo Street Pass but with game connectivity, leaving reviews, and meeting people to play. I enjoyed how the app tied into game play of Vita games. Nintendo Switch only recently gained the ability to have Bluetooth audio but you still need a cellphone for chat. Still no text or messaging service like the WiiU and 3DS had. Smh...
Remote play was great for me. My PS4 was hardwired and I used my cell service as a Hotspot when I wasn't home. But I think you're right, it's based on the internet service you have at home and abroad as well as the type of games you play to get the best experience. From experience, competitive esports and games with twitch reactions didn't work great.
Those who got into the system late didn't get to enjoy the system at its best. Sony stopped the NEAR service, PS Now was fun, Cross messaging and Voice Chat, and Online game play.
With the surge of mobile gaming in the West (hand held PCs) I really hope Sony releases a system like their recent patients imply.
Resistance and Black Ops on Vita were made WITH THE SAME ENGINE. I don't understand why the COD Devs didn't use their COD engine to make everything better.
To be aytch, as someone who was moreso into the 3DS during the early 2010s, I have been considering a Vita these past few years, but still have yet to act on that consideration.

I never owned an PSP or PSVita, since I was a DS kid. But years later, I feel almost jealous I never touched any of these consoles. They were incredible for their time, besides the price.
I forgot about my psvita in my drawer for a couple months and when I found it I played with it but the thumbsticks looked like they melted away and were extremely sticky and almost slimy. Wth?
