As as Australian, our treatment of Murali always sickened me. He deserved so much better. Kudos to Ranatunga for standing up for his players and not throwing Murali under the bus. Ross Emerson is a sad, petty little man who thought he knew better than the ICC. The England vs Sri Lanka game at the Adelaide Oval would be the last international game that he umpired. Good riddance!

No he didnt, he bowled with a bent arm. They changed the rule so he could bowl, sounds like you are a sad petty little man if you think otherwise. Did you ever play cricket? I played for 40 plus years and I know the rules back to front. Emerson was right in no balling him, he bowled outside of the rules of the game at that time. The fact they changed the law is evidence of that.

    • @iankearns774

@SynthMusicFan 501 Which is why he was called for chucking. They didn't know that at the time. I have nothing against him getting accolades for what he bowled after the sport scientists helped him adjust his action. But they did change the angle allowed law to suit him. I just get sick of all the Aussie bashing, the bloke who made the clip reckons they were conspiring because they were scared he would beat Warne. Pure Bullshit, Warne never had a problem with Murali's action. One fact no one mentions is that Murali got a lot of wickets against minnow teams on the sub continent while Warne's were mostly against strong teams but you cant begrudge him his wickets however he did chuck it early on, and they fixed all that.

    • @iankearns774
      @iankearns774 2 роки тому

@Artless. He bowled with a bent arm because he couldn't straighten it. I get that, but those balls were illegal because he couldn't straighten his arm according to the rules. Two umps lost their careers over the furore and the ICC changed the rule to accommodate Murali. Re read what I said, thats exactly what I am saying. The idiot that made the video is claiming the umpires tried to ruin Muralis career so that Warne would be the greatest wicket taker. Its bullshit to even contemplate that. Murali was at the start of his career, no one was to know he would go on to take so many wickets, and no one knew Warne would take so many either. Just another idiot playing the victim card.

@@iankearns774 When they did it before icc ruling, it was fine.

@@makshay The law to allow the bend in your arm that allows Murali to be legal was introduced in 2005. Before then he was having issues as many purists claimed that his off spin ball was illegal. To my eyes it was as well but back then I didn't know he couldn't straighten his arm. All I am saying is that to the letter of the law the Umps were right to no ball him. According to some laws today Lia Thomas is a woman and can swim against women. Rules sometimes get changed for the wrong reasons.

I remember watching this game live as a 10 year old waking up at 0330am in England to watch. It was a controversial dramatic game throughout with Sri Lanka winning in the last over 9 wickets down with Murali hitting the winning runs in Adelaide. It was Mahela Jayawardenes first 100 for Sri Lanka and he went on to become one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Jayasuriya went nuts at the top of the order too - chasing 300 was a big effort in those days but his innings told England it's on....There was the controversy over Roshan Mahanama (now icc match referee) colliding with Darren Gough ? Deliberately to avoid a run out. Darren Gough went crazy and tried to intimidate him but didn't work. Ranatunga was also sledged by England captain Alec Stewart trying to take the moral highground and saying that Ranatungas behaviour was a disgrace that day. Ranatunga replied "don't you worry about that" and played an innings to help SL win. You guys should check out the highlights of this game - very dramatic.
Btw his comments about Asian influence being too high- half true it's mainly Indian influence being too much and calling the shots. So it's not as biased a comment as you may think- a lot of ppl believe india abuse their power in cricket way too much,
Ranatunga was a tough nut though - never backed down, took all the sledging he got. He had the nerve to say Shane Warne was a nobody before the 1996 World Cup and it worked, got the Aussies all riled up.

They even made him wear a cast, and did the testing, to see if that had any performance differences.
Later they found out, most of the bowlers, who otherwise appeared to be fair, were actually "throwing" and straightening their arms.
This forced the ICC to review the arm-bend -angle tule.

Murali ‘s action is very unique and to the naked eye it looks like he could be throwing. So the initial no ball calls were justified. But after the bio mech study, it was clear he wasn’t extending his arm through the bowl, but staying bent throughout, he was clear, so it was sad when he was the subsequently no balled again. As an Aussie I was sad it happened at the hands of an Aussie umpire. We love Murali and think he’s awesome. After Warne the best spinner……!

The reason why nobody had any sympathy for the Aussies after the sandpaper gate and the reason why they were advertising the new Australian team in the documentary the ashes, was because of how deep this mentality had creeped into the players from Australia. You're question "why isn't straightening allowed?"
For a fast bowler it applies more force to ball, therefore faster. It's why fielders throw the ball, not bowl it. They can get it further (boundary) or faster (runout)
For spinners it applies more torque to the ball, makes the spin faster meaning more deviation and better results. I haven't seen stats but suspect you could double or triple the rate of spin by straightening the arm through delivery.
For both types of bowlers it's most likely to occur in tight situations as players strive for that little extra (Note in the majority of cases it would not be a conscious or intentionally straighten and the player would be unaware they did it)

Leg before wicket means if it bounces in or out $ and knocks the bails off with one centimeter of the ball the leg is impeding thus removing the bails. I guess the technology is only so acuate (half a cricket ball 3.6 centimeters) but that doesn't forgive impinging on the bowler's skill when technology is available.

Australia always had some weird thing about trying to weed out bowlers who were thought to be chucking. They ruined their own Ian Meckiff for the same reason. There's an obsession with rules and laws here and making sure they are followed to the letter without any flexibility at all. I think the reason is because Australia is essentially a prison colony at heart and ultimate importance needed to be given to rules and laws or the colony would have gotten out of control. Same reason for the complete overreaction and excessive punishments for the ball tampering scandal.

shane warne was magical to watch, entertaining on the field , had a great personality and aura. Hence he is the most liked and loved spinner of all time. I too have the same feeling. But to say that warne was better than murali is being CRICKET DUMB. There is a difference between who is your fav and who is the better .
and trust me a lot of pundits, experts, commentators and fans show this kind of stupidity over and over again in cricket. Cricket analysis is more often than not dumb. The reason is that ex cricketers who become commentators and experts are biased . And they have never undergone any training to suppress their biases and practice objectivity before coming to broadcasting. So they keep on blabbering the dumb shit out of their mouth over and over again. aND INFLUENCE THE FANS TOO.
Some common examples of recent dumb cricket analysis :
    1. the overhype and aura created around a player who by any basic cricket knowledge, stats, data, technique, classs etc. is nothing more than a DECENT PLAYER. His name is BEN STOKES. i call him the most overrated player of this centuiry.
    2. Another one is that india should change its t20 approach to win the world cup. With the same t20 approach India has defeated every top side in the bilateral series over long stretches of matches. This means that for a consistent period of time and substantial sample size India has been a better team than every other t20 team in the world. All this with their own approach.
Now when they lose in crunch games at the big icc event They start blaming the approach. What experts should criticise is the anxiety, fear and psychological block in crunch big moments. But they are so cricket dumb that they start crictising the approach. And i will get the same reaction from the fans too in the comments. Because dumb cricket analysis is considered to be GOOD CRICKET SENSE thses days. TRUST ME BOTH ARE COMPLETELY OPPOSITE THINGS

      Case 1: Straight arm -
When you gain the momentum after taking the first arm swing and form your release - you take control of your resultant action and straighten your arm - you are not allowed to *BEND* your arm during the point of release (of the ball).
      Case 2: Bent arm -
Same as above and this time you decide to bend your arm - you are not allowed to *STRAIGHTEN* your arm during the point of release.
In simple terms, you are not allowed to change your arm's degree of arc at the time of release. If you start with a bent arm, you have to continue with that same degree of bent.
The loophole of the law lies actually with *Hyperflexion* and ICC never deemed it illegal because it's very rare. Players like Shoaib Akhter and Jasprit Bumrah have hyperflexion.

Posted this comment a number of times n it keeps disappearing, after testing Murali again in 2004, they tripled the percentage a spinner could straighten their arm from 5% to 15% for the ball to be legal. His testing showed he straightened his arm 14%.
I wonder how many wickets he got with an illegal action in the almost 10 years umpires were afraid to call him?

  • @ytbgaming2610

Murli's action was legal according to rules at that time but it will be illegal acc to rules that are today. The rules have become more strict and that ended the careers of many bowlers. ICC waited for murli to retire before revising their rules.

Garbage, they changed the rule to accommodate him, just as they let Malinga bowl round arm and that young feller thats bowling round today. The rules are less strict today, I umpire local cricket and you wouldn't dare no ball a sub continent cricket in fear of reprisals for racism. Its not racism when the rules are there for all to follow. My point being that Australian kids get technique drummed into them at a young age, fast bowlers arm should touch the ear at its highest point prior to release. Been that way since I was a junior in the 1970's. Obviously thats not the rule in Sri Lanka

You should diversify your knowledge base. I have no interest in defending Australia as we are guilty of a lot, I am only interested in people opening their eyes to all history.

To my eyes Murli chucked. The truth is he could bowl without chucking like when he bowled leg spin but he chose to bowl off spin. He clearly chucked and the ICC accommodated his action giving a silly justification.

In my opinion Cricket Raaz has made an extremely biased video. He has started with the narrative that “Australia was out to get Murali.” He then only includes information that supports this narrative.
This is unfortunate because it is an extremely important topic that too often gets clouded by jingoistic nationalism and never truely deals with the topic. I will attempt to give a brief chronological history of events.
1972- Murali born with a congenital deformity of the elbow that creates an optical illusion of “straightening the elbow”.
1995- Umpire Daryl Hair calls Murali for throwing. Daryl Foster who is Australian and a friend of Murali takes him to the University of Western Australia's School of Human Movement. His action is thoroughly tested and the evidence convinces the ICC to clear his action.
1999- Umpire Ross Emerson calls Murali for throwing. Again the University of Western Australia's School of Human Movement conducts testing that clears his action.
2000-2002 Marc Portus, a biomechanics expert for Cricket Australia based at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, conducted tests on 21 elite fast bowlers from five countries, in match conditions. He found that 34 deliveries from these bowlers showed straightening of the elbow between three and 22 degrees. Fourteen of those were above ten degrees, with five exceeding 15. In fact, only a handful of bowlers - pace or otherwise - during this period of testing were found to have no elbow extension (or "straightening") whatsoever: these were predominantly legspinners.
March 2002- Marc Portus’ report was presented to the ICC.
September 2003- Dave Richardson, in his role as ICC general manager, recommended to the ICC to have 15 degrees as the universal tolerance level. No change was forthcoming.
March 2004- Murali’s doosra is reported by English match referee Chris Broad. Murali again returns to the University of Western Australia to test his doosra. The testing showed a 14 degree elbow straightening. Many key elements of the Portus report had been leaked to Murali’s legal team. Pressure was applied to the ICC to make a serious review of no ball laws.
October 2004- Portus and fellow biomechanists Bruce Elliot and Paul Hurrion made separate and independent presentations to an ICC subcommittee brought together to review the matter of illegal bowling actions. Sitting on the committee were Aravinda de Silva, Tim May, Michael Holding, Tony Lewis and Angus Fraser. Portus showed footage from the AIS study, of all current international bowlers at the time, along with the corresponding 3D biomechanics numbers that his team had calculated in the study. The other presentations involved videos of both retired and active bowlers.
November 2004- no ball law changed to allow 15 degrees of straightening.

His leg spin ball was 100% legit but his offy was suspect because his arm bent slightly. They changed the law to accommodate him. Bishan Bedi who was a champion Indian Spinner of the 70's, was an untiring critic of Muralitharan by repeatedly calling him a "chucker", he found support from two other Indian spinners Erapalli Prasanna and Maninder Singh who said the Sri Lankan was given the licence by the ICC to bend his arm. This guy on the video is trying to make it an Australian conspiracy to protect Warne, its pure bullshit. Dont believe everything you see on UA-cam. This is a good example of fake news. Dont believe it guys its rubbish.

@@buddhikadaluwatte8449 Correct, but when the Umpires first saw it they could see his arm was bent so they were correct to query it and no ball him. Once tested they found he could not straighten his arm so they changed the law. They should call it Muralis law. I know he couldn't help it but the umpires were within their rights and lost their careers because of the furore. Rules are rules, play outside them and accept the consequences.

The ICC changed the regulations so that he was able to keep playing because they didn't have the balls to do what was right according to the laws of cricket.
