Your review is AWESOME Are you gonna do Smashes & Thrashes, Killers longer version than what u did ? & Revenge ? Have you by chance might have done any of them already ? Links ?
And the 1981 Interview in Mexico is there anyway to get the full interview with the Interpreter MUTED For God Of Thunders sake ? ? I guess at worse case scenario ? The close captions I could only find one video full length but NO CC Close Captions ?
And 1 day at work a different version of Calling Dr Love came on & it was studio i never heard that version at the time & never heard it since can't find it & I have every kiss album ?
I love the 2nd part of Only you when it opens up reminds me of Rush
Right on, this is good stuff man. I listened to the oath track listing and man when under the rose came on, I was in space... Hell of a trip. Anyway this year was the first time I listened to the elder album. I stayed away because everything I seen or heard about this album was negative. I found out that I did not share that same opinion man. Sadly no tour but fkn a man, Fridays!!! Holy moly Ace Frehley on lead guitar! The oath my gawd sir! Anyway later taters
Yes another Elder fan! Thanks for replying and checking out our show!

Here's what I would LOVE To see you do. The Metallica What if Songs the user did this. Here's a example he would take say a song from 1983 Metallica & redo it in the musical style of 1991 Metallica !
So what I'm wanting is to get you to do the same thing. From redoing a whole album to separate Songs. So let's start out with this & see if it's something you could do please ?
Full Albums to do ? Not saying ALL These albums done at once there just some to get you started. You can pick whatever 1 album you want to try out ?

The Canadian cassette of (Music from) The Elder had a yellow spine and there was no black below the album cover -- the album art covered the entire front of the insert. The tape itself had a green label, and the running order was the label-imposed version which rendered the entire concept of the story incomprehensible.
Great info! Good to know!
@@anywayyousliceitreviews Happy to contribute! One other thing I recall is that the gatefold picture of the long table with the brief story synopsis was not included with the Canadian cassette. The story synopsis WAS included, printed in regular writing on the white background of the cover insert. (It doesn't get any more "deluxe" than that!) As a kid I absolutely LOVED this album -- less so now, largely because of the sloppy and muddy production. Still, I give the band credit for trying something new, and that's a rare thing in their oeuvre.
Absolutely complete credit goes to them at the time for thinking and acting outside the box.
Too bad they depise it now. It's great stuff!
Who rears the ship through the stormy sea?
You do....my friends. You do.
Rock on
Nice of you to say, thanks man! JF
I still have my original LP with the frosted transparent sleeve. I will NEVER forget how I picked this album up on the day of it's release and ran into my room to put it on the turn table. From the moment the needle dropped, I just sat there on my bed dumbfounded. But I will NEVER forget listening to the lyrics of Odyssey and this reference to a Stallion standing on top this mountain and thinking " What the hell are they smoking?" Then years later I see that infamous interview with Tom Snyder where Paul makes reference to always wanting to fight crime while sitting on a stallion overlooking the Long Island expressway with his hair blowing in the wind, and it hits me... That fruitcake figured out how to pull that imagery into a KISS record. LOL!
You know I've heard all the reasons for why this record was created and how they were musically starved for something different (like they hadn't been doing that already with Dynasty and Unmasked). But the one side of it that always miffs me is Paul Stanley's depiction. He's so quick to shame everyone onboard with the product - Ezrin was in the midst of a cocaine addiction; Ace was succumbing to drugs and alcoholism; and the list just goes on from there. But you know who that reflects on the worst? The two guys who were straight through all of it - Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. At least the alcoholic proclaimed it a mistake before they could.
Personally I think the Elder was KISS' last foray into that pretentious exercise of self-importance which led them to believe they could make anything and it would sell. They were always the last to know what was going on because they were in this bubble of yes-men telling them what they wanted to hear. Thats why Creatures was their wakeup call. Unfortunately they had no audience left when they got there. Thats the real tragedy of the Elder. It ran off people who still wanted to believe KISS had a good record left in them. KISS were just one record too late.
Great insight man, and well articulated!
Keep in mind Paul did not write Odyssey so the stallion mention is pure coincidence 😉
@@anywayyousliceitreviews Thanks! I know Odyssey is essentially a cover song from Tony Powers. But I can't help but think Paul saw the correlation between the cinematic quality of the song and his delusional image of sitting on a stallion like a hero. I'm confident the image crossed his mind. And he thinks Ezrin and Ace were out of theirs? LOL!
Exactly! If anyone likes this LP, then they have got to be a big dorks. By this time I was into Ozzy, Maiden, AC/DC etc…
The music stands the test of time for me its the songs themselves from the imagery of the lyrics in the The Oath to the stirring epic Only you and the Odyssey the solo passages in Only a boy that chorus is musically brilliant. Under the Rose is epic the dissonance in the verse hollow sounding clean picking guitar the chorus riff is heavy I mean idk what else ya want a World without heroes is a finally crafted Crosby Stills Nash n Young esque offering every bit as good imo
Another fitting review. I had to mature into Elder, never gave it a chance as a kid/teenager, was in my 30s before I gave it a proper listen. It is a great album, just made at a horrible time for the band. Mostly agree with the track reviews (I think "Mr. Blackwell" is pure schlock from Gene), and great insight again overall. A discussion on the demos from that time would be great - a few I've heard on YT sounded very interesting. Great job again gents, really enjoying these!
Totally appreciate all that. Yeah we try to mention some demos here and there, but a proper show about demos may be in the cards. So many great ones from that period indeed!
A great album!
Very excited for this episode. Elder and DTK are my 2 faves.
Good stuff. Your videos definitely make me contemplate how differently people experience music. I doubt I know anyone that appreciates music more than the guy one the right. I don't now much about the guy on the left but he looks like King Buzzo and he clearly knows his s***. Keep it up, guys. You made me listen to this album for the first time. I give it a shakey C- but I give your channel a solid A
Thanks man! Yeah The Elder isn't for everyone. Even some of the most die hard Kiss fans despise it. NOT these guys who both appreciate music beyond belief!
GREAT EPISODE! Keep it up. I subscribed.
Thank you Ralph! That means a lot coming from you!
The last KISS album that was on Casablanca records was Animalize, here in Australia. The Mercury label started w/ Asylum.
Oh wow thanks for the info Mate!
Anytime. My cousins in New York are originally from the Bronx...they lived in the same apartment complex that Ace's grandmother lived in. So they met Ace when he was still in KISS and nobody knew what he looked like. They saw pictures from Ace I believe, of KISS related things obviously. I remember one of my cousins mentioning how ugly Ace was Lol. Coincidentally, they moved to Westchester, a place called Yorktown Heights...Ace had his recording studio in the same town.
Wow, cool to know!
😂 the phoning/ mailing it in line
Great show by the way...😊
Good stuff...
Thanks man. Thought of you a lot during this one. So many Kiss memories with you it's crazy.
Looking forward to this 👍
Hope you enjoy it!
Great podcast/Keep it up/Yeah Mr Blackwell is total badass/🥇
We appreciate that!
Loved it guys, I got a few laughs too.
Awesome, thanks!
Love the show guys and the album !
Everyone says Gene's hair was cut really short but it's not,he has it tied back in a metallic ponytail - just look ! Thanks again guys for another great show
Thanks!
"Metallic ponytail" haha.
I am glad you like the album. I was there suffering through the solo albums, unmasked, dynasty, double platinum and The Elder was just too much. I am still a fan but focus more on The Ace Frehley Piano Trio more. Very rare albums that the rumor is that Bill Evans tried to stop with Paul Motian. UFO stole the master tapes. Nixon lied!!!
I remember first buying it in Nov.1981 nyc and seeing the cover a bit odd but figuring something special inside that Awaits me.
Got it home and feeling befuddled & confused like this isn't my band as I'm sure many did then, it took a bit of adapting to it (like the borg) to understand it or why....I quickly noticed nobody liked KISS much after that and supporting them wasn't popular in 1981.
I think in many ways it’s a more honest record than Umasked! It falls in the middle of my album rankings. Odyssey is an absolute embarrassment, Under The Rose and A World Without Heroes are 5star gems IMO!
Yes especially Under The Rose!
I love fan fair and its role on the album but I’m into the concept stuff
It definitely serves its purpose!
hey guys luv ur show. reading book about the elder. just ordered the crazy nights book. cant wait to see u do that album. keep up the good work
Thanks man! Yeah Crazy Nights will be done soon for sure.
Are you from the NW too?
@@anywayyousliceitreviews from texas. the first band i got into in 1978 by cousin. had the ace picture album and mini unmasked bubblegum album. 8 tracks dynasty and unmasked for birthday. looking forward to more soon.
What I really dig and appreciate about your reviews is the amount of research, analysis, and passion that goes into each episode! When listening to THE ELDER, I'm always reminded of an anecdote Terry Gilliam tells about something mentioned to him in regards to MONTY PYTHON'S MEANING OF LIFE: The c*@p bits make you realize just how GREAT the good bits really are. Whereas I and MR. BLACKWELL make your back teeth hurt, songs like UNDER THE ROSE and THE OATH (Which is one of my favorite KISS songs across all albums) shine as the masterpieces that they are! As always, great episode, you guys!
Thanks so much! Yeah we like to be prepared so we don't look like idiots on screen haha. We actually know most of the stuff before hand, but definitely like to study up leading up to the show to refresh our minds. Glad it's appreciated.
Yeah we're kinda weird cuz we love ALL of the Elder but certainly understand your point!

Again - great show with very interesting background information 🤘👍🤘👍
Before I share my song list with you - a few more thoughts:
1. Ace Frehley had warned against making this album at this time because he felt that after Unmasked a heavy metal album had to come in order to win back the lost base fans - and in my opinion Ace was 100% right.
2. If an album had been recorded in the style of Creatures, then Ace would most likely not have left Kiss - Ace has said this in numerous interviews.
3. Music from the Elder failed not only because of the compositions, but also because of the producer.
Bob Ezrin was extremely high on drugs at the time.
You can notice this in the arrangements of the songs and the immature production.
My list:
Escape From The Island
Dark Light
The Oath
Only You
A World Without Heroes
Under The Rose
Mr. Blackwell
Odyssey
Just A Boy
Fanfare
Keep on rocking and greetings from Germany 🇩🇪👍🤘🎸
The Unmasked costumes are the dynasty costumes. Of course Eric is a new thing, but the rest are the same save for pauls new dark Purple jacket with black feathers and new boots. no more "tear drops"
LOved it from the day it came out Euro metal scorps priest, rainbow went Kiss And Kiss went eruo metal. Both nights at the troubadour front row/Amazing shows!
Right on! Seen the Revenge tour twice myself. JF
Lovin' the show and content. Very informative
Appreciate that!
@themusicofkiss4531 also check out if you haven't already a song called What will we be singing in the 80's by Aussie band The Monitors. It has a slight Kiss connection.
Just checked it out..very cool. These days, they'd get sued for using the make up like that!
@themusicofkiss4531 I'm glad you liked it. It's good to share things that some people haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time. Peace.
Definitely. I probably never would have heard of that!

It's funny, the European released cover I have is not gatefold just a single LP cover so I guess different markets had a different one. The cover reminds me of Gentle Giant's Free Hand (1975).
There was nothing stopping Kiss from doing a concept album. As you mentioned, their ties to Bob Ezrin probably made the prospect seem very appealing. But, there was a big faction of the Kiss fanbase that they didn't consider - the fans didn't want this kind of change. As mentioned before, I was still over 30 years away from becoming a "fan," and when this came out, I was a senior in high school. The Kiss "boom" started when my brother was still in high school, the make up was wearing thin to non-fans, and post "Kiss Meets The Phantom" from a couple years prior - something was definitely going to happen with Kiss - it had to. I understand it a whole lot better now, thanks to your videos. Being a snarky high school musician, my buddies and I just chuckled and said "sell-outs." Then turned our backs. Fortunately, I turned back!! Thank you Jason and Peter.
Thank you Mark for watching as always, and your wonderful insight! You're never too old to become a Kiss fan! Glad you wisened up haha😃

I was a huge Kiss fan by this point. Saw them twice in 77 and once in 79. Loved Dynasty and liked Unmasked. In 1981, I went into a music store that sold instruments and some albums. I saw the Elder and had no idea what it was so I bought it because I bought everything KISS, I never heard of any news or promotion for this album. How did they expect it to sell if no one even knew it was released? And I live in NY where it was a huge market for this stuff.
I think that just proves how excited the record company was about the album...like..not at all. 🤨
Great show guys, not sure if anyone pointed this out in the comments but there were three versions of the elder inner sleeves, the most common was the transparent sleeve with the credits, then the more rarer one than the transparent sleeve was the one in the re issue, a white sleeve with the lyrics, and the very rare one came with just a sheet with the lyrics on it, it wasn't the sleeve but just a piece of paper. So yeah ,three separate releases all American but with three different inner sleeves.
Good info! The first clear sleeve is the one dear to our hearts. But good to know, and thanks for watching!
I love the Elder. I loved it when it came out when I was a kid. I was really big into D&D and this album just had that feel to it. Plus it was KISS, and we seemed like we waited forever for this album. This album shows all the things that KISS are capable of. Sooooo many awesome songs. LOL I used to think they said 'and we'll drink to Ace" as well. Funny how we can hear the same thing sometime. Awesome video guys.
Thanks Brant! Us Elder lovers need to stick together. It really is a masterpiece to us, so we were more than happy to praise it's glory.
@@anywayyousliceitreviews & @InMyHead
For me The Elder was a hard next slapping in the face, after Unmasked. Musically Ace and Eric Carr saved the record. In Germany the LP flopped and also nobody was interested in the single “I”.
What annoys me the most is the fact that it would have been possible to make a metal album. In any case, there was enough song material written.
Just one example: "Breakout" (later on Frehley's Comet / Car Jam on Revange) would have been an excellent metal song that would have even made it possible for Eric Carr to sing lead vocals for the first time.
I'm happy that you love and enjoy listening to "The Elder" and of course I respect it!👍👍
But you can certainly understand how people like me who love hard rock and heavy metal feel...it feels like a second (after Unmasked) punch in the face.
Maybe Austria was an album behind or something lol

Yes, MTV primarily played power-pop, and new wave videos....
but artists like the rolling stones, meat loaf, billy squire, blue oyster cult received major coverage as well.... I can remember one of MTV's first and almost only commercials was a poster endorsing the tattoo you concert promoting the stones at the time....
KISS'S popularity was over shadowed by the likes of the police, and Adam ant....
About the time this album was coming out to the public, the Pop charts were dominated by the Olivia Newton-John song Physical, that single was #1 in the states on Casey's countdown for 10 weeks, how does KISS compete with that? They release a concept alum that goes nowhere and means nothing to anybody. Lots of changes at Casablanca, management, Bill Aucoin and the band were not seeing eye to eye at times. Gene and Paul made decisions for the band and Frehley's vote was never considered. Eric Carr had no vote, he was not a full fledged member and was more an employee.
This had good intentions, I find it off putting that to this day, Gene and Paul still are embarrassed by this album. Well yeah their names are on it, they put everything into it, but there's a lot of us who really appreciate it. It is a great effort, it never became what it was supposed to be, the album that never was. But all these years later, I can't believe those two are still not willing to forgive and forget the crap they took, from record excecs and who ever else razzed them back then. Peers or promoters, for once the critics liked their effort. The public has sort have come around, a lots of people get up and scream when the band leads off into The Oath, which they do on their cruises sometimes.
They did AWWH on Unplugged, so get off the bad bandwagon and have some fun with a few of these forgotten tunes. If you watch the Fridays performance and or listen to the album, you can clearly hear it's Simmons in falsetto, not Stanley. He's up there a bit, but he's overpowered by Simmons with the higher voice. Bob Ezrin was a good idea to bring in, he was all fucked up on cocaine, but he'd just just finished with Pink Floyd's The Wall, could lightening strike twice? NOPE!
I like that for once, KISS' music for this recording is listed as Progressive, Prog Rock KISS??? Like Rush, or Genesis?? Let's not get carried away here, but it's not Hard Rock either. American radio stations didn't want anything to do with Unmasked and once they were given AWWH as the first single they just put it away and then I was put out as a single, nope, that's not a hit. The Oath was a single in Japan, it might have lasted a week on the charts here, it is heavy, it grooves and it's out there lyrically. But at the time we were waiting for the movie, the words to the songs were for a film, but the details of that were hush hush. After a few weeks it was plain to us, there wasn't gonna be a movie.
Also the reason some of the elder vinyls from other countries have casablanca labels is because that's all they had when the record was pressed in that country so they usually had to use them up, a lot of countries did that. And the reason your Austrian version has another opening is because the first pressings came with a poster that's very hard to find.
You rule with this info!
It still blows my mind that that they made a KISS concept album that's not about KISS.
Haha yeah never thought of it that way. Would've been any more self-indulgent !
Bob Ezrin did make a masterpiece with Two Steps From The Move. Hanoi would have ruled if not for Vince. Huge fan here.
Agree 100%. Love Hanoi.

Kiss on Fridays!
I did like it when it came out, but I was one of those fans who was waiting for a KISS album that sounded like side four of Alive II. Yes I loved the solo albums, Dynasty, and Unmasked, but I was ready for some back to basics KISS..... but now, like you guys, I think The Elder is a masterpiece, an underrated album in general. The critics missed out here.
1981, I bought this record and it's the original gatefold with no lyric sheet, which would have been great, but I heard The Oath kick off the album and thought this is AWESOME!!! I had read the mags of the time, they told us it was gonna be a soundtrack for a movie and all I hoped for was don't let KISS act in it, LOL!!! I wasn't surprised to hear orchestrations or boys choirs on rock albums, but on a KISS album this was newish. Pianos, strings and horns was a new step and dimension for the band to travel into and what the hell, it's a soundtrack, not a regular KISS album, experimental and it's got some great stuff going on here. I was a big fan of this album back then and even thru today. I was really taken by surprise by the Japanese CD I bought of it back in around 1989 and some other Japanese Burrnin' collection cds, at the local record store, they had a great import section, the songs were in their proper order and there was a bit more chanting between songs to ties it all together. Of course I learned how to play most of these songs back then and still grind them out cuz The Oath is fun to play! Gene's and Paul's songs are top notch, writing, structure and singing, they tried to do their best, Frehley has great solos on this album, I would love to hear the full sessions cuz we all know Bob Ezrin chopped his solos, probably for time issues. Ace's Dark Light is a JAM, don't know where it was going in the story or what it's all about, but it did give a showcase to Ace and his guitar solo with drums only keeping the beat, that was neat! Simmons shines on A World Without Heroes, vocally, for once, in makeup on Fridays! he didn't use his "Demon" growling gurggly vocals, he used his real voice and did it nice. The use of song writers like Lou Reed and others had me wondering, What would Lou Reed contribute to a KISS album??? And speaking of Fridays, as a lot of us did, I saw it on tv that nite and saw Pauly play the solo in AWWH and was like OH WOW!!! That is a great solo!!! So much to go on and on about this album, the sound effects of Mr. Blackwell, the sirens being used in Escape From The Island, what island? The brilliant orchestrations of Odyssey and they way Gene & Paul sang, not the usual screaming. Eric Carr's pounding beats and vocals and what was going on in his mind back then, "I thought I joined KISS..." I bet he was thinking. I hold this album high and proud and wave it to my friends and say, I bet you don't have this one do ya!!!!! And they all say, never heard it, and I reply, well too bad for YOU!!!! So there!!! :)
Yes, you get IT. The magic of the Elder. Like yourself, I loved it back then as a 10 year old . There are adults now that can't wrap their heads around it. Too bad for them. It rules!

I loved this album when it came out and my appreciation of it has only increased. They took a chance and it sounded fresh. The production is stellar and the songwriting is top notch. The only problem is that by the time it was released the remaining fan base just wanted a straight up rock album. Timing was bad but not the album itself. Stanley should own this album for the diehards that bought it and stuck with the band through out.

Yes, I also loved "Music From the Elder" back in '81, especially after "Unmasked", which I absolutely HATED! To me, "The Elder" was a return to Rock, even though I'm sure lots of Kiss fans would disagree with me about that!
By 1981, I had also really gotten into Rush. I loved epic songs like "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", "The Trees" and "Closer to the Heart". So, for me, "The Elder" wasn't so much Kiss trying to make "The Wall", it was Kiss making their own "2112".
I'm also totally with the record company as far as track order goes. I never really needed the album to tell me the story...that was what the movie was for, right?! (Yeah...still waiting for that to happen! Lol!) "The Oath" is the perfect opener, kinda brings to mind Dio-era Sabbath to my ears ( the great "Heaven and Hell" had come out the year before ).
Looking back on it now, it's all a bit silly, but I'm glad they made this album. It's an interesting failure that's a bit "over-hated".
Funny thing about the Fridays performance, too: I used to watch that show pretty much every week, but, for some reason, I had no idea Kiss was going to be the musical guest that particular night and went to bed early. When I woke up on Saturday morning, my older brother, who wasn't a Rock music guy, was like "Hey, you missed Kiss on Fridays". I was FURIOUS that he hadn't woken me up! Ha! So I made sure that I watched every episode without fail and finally saw it as a summer rerun!
Thanks for another fun video, dudes!
Thanks for sharing all that!
Peter and I are huge Rush fans as well. The whole concept album/more progressive approach was/is right up our alley.
Too bad you missed Friday's originally! It's not like these days when you can pull it up immediately on You Tube so I feel for ya.

Also nice to know our Elder episode is still getting some love.
Solid Gold performance Dec 81. Watch for Ace's bad ass moves!

I think The Elder is a great album.
I took it as the story was loosely based on Eric being chosen for the band.
While I prefer OG vinyl for sound I like the intended song structure found on the 2014 vinyl (and CDs).
In ‘81 I didn’t understand why the songs were out of order.
Paul is great on lead and I get the struggles with Ace but I didn’t like Paul taking on the leads in performances. It just didn’t fit with what the band had been since day 1 with each guy having their role as a character and as a musician.
My third favorite Kiss album after Creatures of the Night and Lick it up.
Frank Zappa discovered A.Cooper Bob Ezrin make him.
This is true!
The Matrix before the matrix
They wanted to be taken seriously by the critics and they failed. Bob Ezrin just did the Wall so they decided on a concept album. It was not them ata lol.
…..and Bob Ezrin was not that much extremely on drugs when he produced “The Wall”, I think.
This album was so bad that i had to go to the public library to get it lol
Jason and his gather round ppl thymes of yore
I'm very communal when I want to be😊
Oopsie, that Austrian version does start with The oath -PT
Then there wasn't gonna be a tour either??? They just disappeared. Nothing about them in the mags anymore. The merch was gone, no commercials for new products. It was a big build up to nothing. It's said they were getting a budget for a tour, but it was not to be. Not even in Europe this time where the album was at least on their album charts. It was over a year before they did the Fridays show. We never saw them in their new costumes and look other than black and white pics in magazines, no one put out color pics, years later I found posters and tons of mags in a bin at a convention of some sort and it was all color pics from 1981 & '82, Killers promotions.
That's bad when your own record company turns their back on you and won't promote you anymore, the red tape bullshit that the excecs know more than the artists. Gone were the days of the private jet, the champagne 24/7 flowing freely. It was clear they had to redeem themselves, somehow someway.
They had to dig deep and come up with some new songs that would appeal to the older fans who had given up on them. They had to push the little kids away even though those parents were spending a lot of money for t-shirts and concert tickets, but without American tours now that was null and void. No one saw them, we didn't hear about them, they were just gone, I can't put it any other way, they were out of sight and sound, again.
Just a wierd album that misses on every angle. Even the rockers sound uninspired or odd due to the singing style and lyrics. Dark light is probably the only real sounding kiss song.
Elder is the sound of a confused band trying to find it's way in a new decade. A lot of established bands were having that issue in the early 80s. Alice was in his blackout period for the same reason. Black Sabbath was in their post Ozzy years. Etc etc.
Not a bad album but disappointing.
No! Only kiss was having issues. This album just sucked ass!
Hearing the demo for Loves a deadly weapon and a few others off the Creatures box set makes the Elder laughable. Those songs were better especially Its my life and the 4 on Killers. Should of just release a regular rock album. Possibly would of helped their sales. I like the Elder but not at the time of the release of it. Watched them on Solid Gold and their image/looks drastically changed too much and I lost interest for many years
I can't deny those songs you mentioned aren't all killer. It's My Life is easily my favorite unreleased track. One of my biggest Kiss mysteries is why that was never released!
Worst Kiss album ever.
I don’t really like it too….but there are 3 or 4 that I dislike more.
Think maybe it was chicks didn’t dig it so guys didn’t care as much?
Yeah a lot of the die hard guys think it stinks too though. Fools.
