  • The colours that you like to wear are an important piece of the 'wardrobe' puzzle. I hadn't really given it much thought, proper analytical thought, up until about 10 years ago when I realised that my closet was a mismatched collection of random colours, and way too much black!
I now know that I don't really like black at all and that navy and brown suits me better as neutrals. I have discovered that I suit white rather than cream. I know what colours work for me, and what shades and tints of each colour give me a colour palette to buy, thrift and make for a cohesive wardrobe full of colour!
To help me to make this colourful wardrobe, I have created a colour palette for myself on my computer and I carry a business card case full of fabric scraps and pieces of yarn in my handbag at all times. That way, I am always prepared to check whether a piece of clothing, fabric or yarn will coordinate with the other items in my closet. After all, you never know when you'll accidentally stumble into a fabric or yarn shop! Or come across that perfect vintage item when scanning the rails in a charity/thrift shop :-)
    DEFINITION OF A POCKET FARM

Love that idea about carrying the fabric swatches in a old business card holder

What I always do, if I'm considering a garment or a piece of fabric, is to hold the edge of it against my skin (underside of the forearm is probably best) and look exactly at the spot where the fabric and your skin meet. Your eyes will be drawn to one side or the other (either to the fabric or to your skin). If the fabric draws your eye, then that's a color that's going to overwhelm you or wash you out. If your skin draws the eye, then that's going to be a great color for you. It pretty much never misses.

Your "fabric swatches in a business card holder" idea is brilliant! I went fabric shopping at the weekend, specifically to find some jersey to make a top to wear with a pair of burgundy trousers. I took a small offcut of the trouser fabric in my purse and whipped it out every time I thought something might work. Quite a few didn't, but eventually I found the perfect thing 💯 Without that scrap I might well have bought the wrong fabric.
I get so annoyed with the "colour of the season" nonsense, when all you can find in the shops is lime green or dayglo orange or whatever. I want to buy the colours I like that suit me, not what some random fashion guru decides everyone will wear! But then, I've never followed trends. I prefer to plough my own furrow. That's why sewing my own clothes is such a perfect hobby for me. 😊

I totally get what you mean by "complex" colors. I too like colors that are not 100% saturated, and not 100% pure. And at the same time I don't want anything "muddy" or pastel. Cool, but not icy. Bright, but not loud. And I like green but it only certain cool greens, like eucalyptus (a cool olive green? or a forest/pine green. I think some people would consider these "deep" colors.
I love the idea of considering what are the items that were worn the most/the least.
I finally accepted the fact that solids work best for me. Maybe a stripe or a pin dot. I have tried and tried to make florals work for me, but they look horrible (except in scarves).
So yes, looking back at what has worked in the past is very helpful, though I find my colors are changing a bit with age, I don't have such a high contrast any more.
And yes on the white/off white/cream dilemma! I can do off white and even beige sometimes, as long as there's not too much yellow in it. It's hard to describe in words, but one's eye can tell right away.
I really enjoyed switching over to fall/winter clothes and seeing a pretty clear color palette. I have that picture in my head and keep it in mind when considering adding anything. Doing it earlier in the season helps with planning. Mainly because I can see I don't really need any more clothes 😂
But still trying to sew through my stash and focusing on good basic garments.

I loved this. Hadn't thought too hard about this but now I am. I just had a huge cleanout of my closet. Honestly, I didn't have much to begin with but now even less. I have decided to be intentional about my wardrobe choices and sew them to fit me. Color is important.

You are delightful in your "waffling"! Thanks for sharing your tips. I've used paint chips (what we call them in the US) for many years, but your swatches in a tiny box is genius.

The funny thing for me is that the answer is neither. For the most part, I won't wear clothes with a white or cream ground. They've never suited me and it's because I'm the approximate colour of skim milk. But what I have noticed recently as I get older is that I am drawn to navy blue over black. I've worn a lot of black all my life, and I've never worn navy because my mother had an irrational hatred of it. Finding navy blue now is like a fresh love affair, and I'm quite pleased to have a new neutral to build into my wardrobe.
What a clever trick to look at tints and shades of colours! I will have to use that.

Thanks for another great video. I need to do a deep purge on my closet and will use the info in your videos (past and future) to help me build a more cohesive “collection” that I actually want to wear and is primarily “me-made”! Currently my closet is filled with clothes that don’t fit, or are things I loved but no longer wear because I am no longer working, or a few items I wear all the time, and a smattering of impulse buys that I hate.

Fabulous video! ❤❤❤ adore the business card case full of wardrobe swatches! Someone else asked and I’m seconding it: what is the wool used in you gorgeous green cardigan? I want that green but always find darker or mixed greens that aren’t as lovely as this! Please do spill all on what type of yarn you used for your card! 😅 Suzanne

I also like to get paint chips based on the colors I like and punch a hole in them and make a color book for when I buy material or shop. It’s nice to know what colors look good on you that you love. 👍❤

I loved this video, colour is also very important to me. Many years ago I had my colours done, there were no surprises, I loved all "my" colours. I needed cool, clear and deep colours. I also suit pure white as opposed to cream, In fact anything with yellow of any shade makes me look ill. I loved all your sewing videos, the patterns, fabrics and designs you chose were fabulous. I understand exactly when you said you like more complicated shades and tones of a basic colour.
I love your cardigan, I'm busy searching for just such a pattern for winter knitting. I enjoy Aran, it is timeless and doesn't go out of style. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Lol, I will wear true red or burgandy if it leans cool, but yellows, oranges, golds, and even most beiges dont look great on me. I do like chocolate brown at times, but it doesn't wind up looking great with other colors in my closet. I like jewel tone type colors.... grape or eggplant purple, teal, raspberry, sapphire blue, burgandy.... but cool leaning bright red, hot pink, bright cerelean type blue are good too. For light colors it needs to be mostly white with just a dab of color so sort of icy rather than a medium range. But I get those dirty so quick. Lol.

@@sona.alexandra yeup... they are a little trickier to get right than deeper colors, but much better than the dustier colors that would work well on a summer.

Very interesting.... I avoid both because we have hard water but I guess white would be the better option for me. Black works for me but is a bit much by my face these days. Im switching to more navy now. I generally go with winter colors as Im just off of nuetral to the cool side. Although honestly I love the universal colors the most. Lol.
