Hi Abbey, as a PhD candidate in protein biochemistry and studying proteins for a living (I mean I do it 24/7) I cannot agree more with everything that you’ve said. No haircare product can speed up hair growth and no amount of essential oil can cause your hair to miraculously grow down to your butt. Once damage has been done to the alpha keratin in the hair, only a bond repairing product can replace those bonds and even then, that protein structure has STILL been altered and will never be the same. Our hair, from my perspective has been designed to withstand stressors, which is why we have so many layers (cuticle, medulla, cortex) but when we introduce physical damage such as bleaching and perming that’s when real hair damage really starts to show, and bond building products have been designed to help with this type of damage. But at the end of the day, once that protein structure has lost its structure i.e a loss in the hydrogen, disulphide and salt bridges that form, your hair will never be the same.
Absolutely love learning this information from you!!! Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Ally: QQ - If I shaved me head, do I get a fresh start?!?
But isn't it true that certain oils do contribute to hair growth? There is a study comparing rosemary oil to minoxidil
@@itsmoiaj yes, you do, your virgin undamaged hair grows back
@KA that is true, but it's only one study from what I can recall, so there isn't "concrete" evidence that rosemary oil is going to work for everyone. Some that have used rosemary oil complain about excessive hair loss, which to me shows that the results are variable and not reliable. Pumpkin seed oil has been shown to promote new growth, but that's taken as an oral supplement and not applied to the hair
If only I could convince my mom that "natural" and "clean" and "organic" (when it's one single ingredient in an inky list) doesn't mean "better"... ugh. Thanks for your content!
My mother in law is like this. 🙄
I have the same issue with my mother, and I'm 33 ffs! Some things will just never change.... 🙄
YES! No amount of keratin/collagen is actually going to improve hair unless you're already deficient in certain amino acids. We all have an "amino acid pool" so we eat proteins, our body breaks them down into individual amino acids, and then uses those amino acids to build new proteins. Ensuring you're eating enough and a variety of proteins is really all you have to do to make sure your body can make those proteins!
YES vote for a part 3! Love these videos, Abby! Thanks for all your hard work and research ❤
youre the only youtuber that i trust when it comes to hair
Thank you for trusting me! ❤
I second that!!! 🤩
Same here !!!!!!!
I'll admit that I did fall for the "clean beauty" gimmick when it first became popular, but when I really started to think about some of the claims and did my own research on ingredients, I quickly realized that it was exactly that, a gimmick. Now I know what to actually look for and don't pay much attention to "clean" marketing. I also know what ingredients agree with my body and what don't, i.e. I can't use toothpaste with SLS (it irritates my gums and makes the inside of my mouth peel) but that doesn't make SLS a bad ingredient.
I never “fell” for clean beauty, but I did gravitate toward products that had the marketing because the ingredients tended to be more what I was looking for. I want to try to stick to ingredients I recognize (not always “natural”, I’m all for “chemical” sounding names as long as I know they are safe). I know some people really roll their eyes at the clean beauty thing, but I am so grateful for Ulta’s clean beauty label, because a few years ago a study came out showing something like 80% of mascaras in the study, and majority of other makeup products contain specific carcinogens (PFAS) that build up in the body and have a tendency to stay there or take a long time to be excreted. Companies don’t care about us they care about money- they will make a new compound and find a use for it, and say that it’s been shown to be safe- because it’s only a few years old so there is not evidence to show it isn’t. It happened with radium, it happened with thalidomide. I’m not scared of “chemicals”, but I wouldn’t be quick to embrace a multimillion dollar industry that profits off you
I hope other creators watch this video. The amount of misinformation being posted online is irresponsible. Thank you for doing the research before suggesting products!
This very much appreciate it! I used to have thicker hair, and is thinning out pretty bad, so you have no idea how much your channel is helping me!! Thank you
Yes to part 3. I didn't know what to believe about collagen powders and thank you for clarifying. I really appreciate that you research product claims and tell us what is bogus.
Collagen is great if you have major surgery. Idk regular stuff. I had a bilateral mastectomy in October. It was recommended for wound healing.
OH! I forgot to tell you I'm on my 4th application of Epres. GURL! So, I'm growing out my grays and my hair is half-gray, half-red. The red has been dyed and dyed and dyed and dyed and color stripped. You can literally close your eyes and run your hands down my hair, and tell where the gray stops and the red begins. The texture changes from soft and silky to crackling straw. The first use of Epres, I noticed, well, nothing. Second use, the feeling of silk extended much farther down my hair shaft. Third, even further. Today's wash day and my 4th (and final because it takes 1/2 a bottle to treat my long, thick hair), it's just maybe the last two inches of hair that still feel not quite silky. And even they are softer than they were! I'm definitely re-ordering it. It smells like someone left mothballs under a carpet in the 1970s, but I cannot deny the results.
I just wanted to say, I've been following your channel for a while now and its made me so happy seeing your channel grow & randomly see your tik toks on my fyp!!! And a lot of it is due to videos just like this that dig deep into products and the 'why' behind the ingredients
I agree with the whole biotin thing, I can't believe people actually believe that. I know people take supplements but it doesn't make sense topically, same with topical collagens. Some things are better off oral. I don't believe in the whole "clean" beauty thing, it's a massive scam.
I've learned so much from you. You explain everything so well, and I so appreciate your content. You obviously work hard at what you do, and I'm so grateful to have found your channel.
Thank you so much for watching! Grateful to have you here ❤
Could you talk about the marketing used for black hair or for curly/coily textures? In your course were there differences in the different textures discussed? I want to learn more about scientifically what my 4c hair needs and not be swayed by predatory marketing
I think that’s the marketing scam right there. That universal products don’t work for us. I have theeee most coily textured hair (Nigerian) and all her advice is relevant I just adjust for a dry scalp.
Gave this one a like for speaking truth on the science! There is SUCH a sense of superiority particularly around clean and natural language in beauty product marketing (and sometimes from people who use them 👀 ☕️) but I so appreciate cutting through all that and just saying “but what does the research say??” 🙌🏼
Hi Abbey, I would like to see a Part 3
I love the knowledge and honesty of your content. Thank you for making it easy to understand and unlike some creators, not condescending. I never feel stupid, but always feel as I'm learning. I appreciate all you research and hard work💖💖💖
I am ready for Part 3!!!
Yesss 🎉
When it comes to strengthening formulas don’t cheap out. K-18 is pricey for my taste but has completely saved my hair. Can’t thank this channel enough for recommending it.
Ty for pointing out the multitude of false claims out there❤
I love K18! They have two new shampoos now as well. A peptide prep detox shampoo and one for your normal shampoo days. Just started using them and they're both amazing!
@@sharonharris9782 thanks! Gotta try em
Collagen peptides daily have truly helped my skin and speed of hair/nail growth somehow. When I stop taking it, my skins and hair get so dull and my nails thin out and crack.
No amount of keratin/collagen is actually going to improve hair unless you're already deficient in certain amino acids. We all have an "amino acid pool" so we eat proteins, our body breaks them down into individual amino acids, and then uses those amino acids to build new proteins. So if you have a good diet you shouldn't see a stark difference. And if you see a big difference then checking your diet should be your first step.
Also I wonder how something you take internally could make the hair and nails already outside of the body change in any way. Doesn't make sense to me. It could be the placebo affect, or a coincedence.
@@personmcdudeguyje
i always get so excited when i get a notif that you uploaded!! thank you for repping us people with a love for both haircare/beauty and science!💖
🥰🥰🥰
I take collagen vitamins for a different reason, but I have noticed my hair and nails grow faster since starting them. No change in how strong they are or anything but definitely a noticeable difference in speed.
Hey Abbey! Would love to hear your opinion on collagen supplements in regards to skin health! I’ve watched videos from the budget dermatologist that swayed me to give them a try.
Also would love to hear your thoughts on rosemary oil for hair health too! I know Dr. Dre has made some videos on that topic as well.
Thanks for all that you do! 😊
Would love to get an answer to this as well! Great question.
Abby coming through with the FACTS 💪🏽
Hey abbey would you ever consider doing a video about your closet, every time you film I’m always wondering where you buy ur clothes they are so cute . Also love the scientific evidence you bring to videos I’m a bio major here ❤❤
Hi! Almost everything I have is from Abercrombie & Aritzia! Nothing from this season though I haven’t shopped in a minute 😂
I agree! It's too good to be true!
Hi Abbey, This was very informative video. When I was young I believed a lot of these claims but with age, trial and error and of course age I realized most of these claims are false!
Thanks for watching!
I just recently got the k18, L’Oréal bond repair (working on purology), the coconut oil pre shampoo and the ordinary hair serum! 🙏🏼 hoping to be consistent and see results! Do you recommend using Olaplex 3 after k18 for 4 min or is that too much and just go to conditioner. Thank you! ❤
Hi Abbey, thank you for this informative video🤍. I'd like to know what's your opinion about Pura D'or mask for thinning hair!
Yes please give us part 3.
I love all your content! I’m wondering if you would do a review on Monat products. And go through some of their top ingredients. I am so curious what you think about that brand. 😊❤️
Thanks a lot ❤ I always wonder if other types of supplements are actually going to work
I get so excited when you upload hair videos!! Makes my day 🥰
I do like products that don’t contain parabens, phthalates or DMDM hydranton bc it’s literally formaldehyde. So I disagree with you about more natural products. And many like myself are allergic to added fragrances, so I try to stay away from that.
I very much appreciate how much research you do! It's why I follow your channel. How do you incorporate purple shampoo into your routine? I would love to see a video going into depth on purple and blue shampoos.
I don’t! They suck the warmth from my hair and I am loving the golden tones so I don’t want to ruin it! I did used to love the Pureology purple shampoo though
In middle school I used drugstore shampoo and conditioner, my hair was long shiny and just gorgeous. Then in the beginning of highschool and ever since I have been using professional shampoo and conditioner and it literally made my hair break off. I'm even a 3rd generation licensed hairstylist lol. Been thinking of going back to non sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and maybe even trying out the older drugstore brands I used to use. Because my hair is so thin on the bottom when it starts to get past my shoulders but I know it has amazing potential because people used to say my hair was so long and shiney, they said it looked like a hair models! I miss it.
Would you be open to buying Function of Beauty again and seeing how you like it now that you're more conscious about your hair and could select your goals better? Also, they came out with a styling primer that they didn't have when you first tried it! Would love to hear your thoughts
Yes, please do a part 3, thank you 🥰!!
Hi Abbey, love your channel! I've had a full highlight done on my hair twice now in the last four months and my hair is now very different. I never struggled with tangles and now I feel like I need to brush my hair every couple hours so it doesn't turn into a rats nest and I have to brush out half my head! I would love any advice or opinion you may have ❤️
But I do agree with nothing we put on our hair helping it grow. People fall for too much of that stuff. I love your videos! Thank you!❤
Can you do a test on any Aveda lines? Nutriplenish? Botanical repair? Invati? Love to hear your input
Hi Abby I love your videos and take your advice very seriously. So saying that can you Review the e.l.f. Hydrating Core Lip Shine, and the Heritage by Mindys new scalp care line with the blue packaging. Thank you 💗
Please do a budget dupes for skincare and haircare products that you like or use.
Part 3!!
Regarding strengthening hair: is it safe to use colourless henna on thin/brittle hair? (Not coloured or heat damaged)
I'd like to try it as people say it coats the hair making it look and feel thicker + I have this annoying parting that appears at the back of my head, and I'm thinking it could make that not appear on day 2 after shampooing.
Your brows look amazing here!! Did you find a replacement for the nudestix?
Part 3 please
Question…What shampoo/conditioner do you suggest for very thick straight limp hair? Thanks and great video! ❤
Would love to see a reaction video on those scalp spa videos
Hey! I just found a Marc Anthony Bond Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. I was wondering if you have tried this or what your thoughts were on it?
Thank you for all that you teach us!
What is your opinion on botanical hair gels vs regular hair gels... like eco styler for example. Are the botanticals better/more nourishing for the hair?
I agree you are so smart and accurate..thank you
I'm old, and not a "hair" person. I leave my hair alone and it leaves me alone. I have used and liked the Hask Biotin leave-in conditioner, simply because I like it--like the smell or whatever. It's fine, I guess, no tangles. However, while playing around, I tried Hask Keratin leave-in conditioner, and that made me feel like my hair was sort of sticking together, and harder to comb. Just thought I'd mention that.
Hey Abbey, what do you think of the Iles Formula products? Will you try them?
Hi Abbey, Is it bad for the hair to use a bond repair shampoo and conditioner whenever I wash my hair (3-4 times per week)? I’m using the Amika The Kure everytime I wash/condition my hair.
Hi Abby can you try the Curlsmith co wash shampoo it’s fantastic and cleans the hair well. Even on straight hair also can you try the Curlsmith air dry cream. It’s also amazing I would love to see a review on this brand xxx even though it’s aimed at curly it’s also for Any hair type.
Happy weekend, Abbey!❤
I appreciate your honesty and all that you have studied to bring this content to everyone You have changed my entire routine of shampooing and conditioning
Same goes for collagen in skincare ..
Hope you have a great weekend Abbey! 💕🤍
Great video as always! Was wondering if the popular Nutrafol hair supplements fall into this category as well
I have tried many hair supplements for my thinning hair - Foligain, Revita, Iherb brands, nothing worked but Nutrafol. The price is unfortunate, but it started working for me in as little as two weeks.
@@elainepang9349 Did you try Viviscal? I was thinking of trying that but I wouldn't pay for Nutrafol.
@@personmcdudeguy Viviscal didn't work for me either. Just try one bottle of Nutrafol and see if it works for you. The results were really that quick for me. Take their online test to see which one they recommend.
I'd be SUPER interested to know your thoughts/ingredient breakdown of the Rodan and Fields haircare line that just came out- I'm not a seller of it but I've seen it everywhere and it's expensive compared to other brands so I'd be curious to know if it's worth it
Can you please make a video about Aspergillus ferment (Terabond) and how it works on the hair? It claims to repair bonds but also has a lightning effect on the skin. Will products containing this ingredient lighten my hair over time?
I would love to learn more about this also! ❤
Growth is internal. Taking collagen works for me. It's everywhere now. Some claim biotin vitamins too.
Have you reviewed amika The Closer Instant Split-end Hair Repair Cream? I wondered if has ingredients to do what it claims?
Hi Abbey! I love these videos. What is the hair science course you took?
Was wondering what blush/bronzer you are wearing in this video. So pretty :)
Can you please do an update on epres and your sisters hair. Also any new research related to it
I love watching your videos, and have learned you gotta read the ingredient list. If I don’t know what it us I look it up.
Hi Abbey could you tell be what product is cheapest and effective as a bonding product for bleached hair as im on a budget and from UK
I used Bondi boost after suffering alopecia and my hair grew back in my balding sports and also new growth… worked for me so
How long did you use it for?
I would agree with everything except for the part about the FDA. In America it’s known that the FDA has little to no regulation on the cosmetic/haircare industry, so it’s so important that you research the ingredients yourself and don’t just trust a label that says “clean or natural”. Clean ingredients don’t make a product superior it just makes it clean. And all products try and say they are “superior” that’s the whole point of marketing.
Yes part 3 please ❤
Thanks for the good reminders. Just because it's natural doesn't make it helpful. Poison Ivy is natural, too.
Then what is a natural clean shampoo you recommend? And there’s really no shampoo to help grow your hair? Vegamor wouldn’t be one?
Thank you for this it confirmed so much for me 🎉
Definitely part three please and a look at the baby in every video 😂❤😂❤
The baby will not stop being featured 🥰
Literally served a briogio density ad immediately after watching this. They highlight ✨biotin✨
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Any scalp recs for hair growth? I always hear nutrafol pills…
Omg! Fable & Mane made my hair fall out, I stopped using it and hair fall stopped. Tried using their oil again and same problem, hair fall again 😢. Never using that again.
I tried it as well. Really disappointed to say the least especially for the price. It also smells like old mouldy pot pourri which is really gross.
Hey abbey can you do a review on foligain shampoos please!!
I’m having trouble with your lipstick link.. it doesn’t show what color you have on
Hey Abby, so quick question. If I have died my hair loads and it’s damaged… if I was to shave my hair off and let it come through again naturally, would the new strands coming through still be damaged? Or would they be like new xxx
why would new strands be damaged? They have never seen bleach/hair die. So unless your diet is really bad your hair should come out healthy.
Hey Abbey, Love the Freakin Heck outta you too. I am 60 and my hair is thinning a wee bit. Would you be able to go over some catch phrases or marketing gimmicks to look out for as I search for a product to grow some new hair.
If you are losing hair due to age, the only thing that can stop it is minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine. Maybe some supplements like Viviscal or Nutrafol, but the vast majority of supppements will not help either. I would start by consulting a doctor.
I finally grabbed a couple Vaseline lip therapies that you recommend while at the store. 😱 one night. My lips were moisturized, super soft and supple this morning.
Does this apply to all hair types?
Wondering about the densifying claims ? I bet it's the same claim as strengthing? I would love to hear thoughts on aging hair ? You are the "Hair Whisperer".☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
I covered aging hair in my last hair myths video! Ahhh hair whisperer I love it 😂❤
I wanna know about Vegamour. I suffer from mild-moderate hair loss and I desperately wa t something to help grow it back
Hell yeah. I'm a dude trying to navigate this stuff crazy hair world, this helps lol thanks
So what about that claim that drugstore shampoos and conditioners are horrible for your hair and that only salon products are the way to go? 🤔 Sounds kind of like a ploy for salons to sell their own products to me.
Dr Dray did an interesting video on rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil for hair growth if people want to check that out - she is a board certified dermatologist. Claims that oils don’t help isn’t necessarily true just because there isn’t enough research yet to back up either claim - which is wild because I would think by now there would be more
I use all natural shampoo Because natural shampoos avoid polluting chemicals like phosphates and sulfates, as its rinsed down the drain, it won't harm the environment.
My hair is damaged from treatment like keratin and protein can you make a video about product that can help my hair ?😊
I used the Redken extreme length for the past 3 years. Yes it made my hair hella long but boy did it thin my hair. At first I thought my holy grail shampoo then after a year my hair started breaking off. At the time i was barely using any heat...so it wasn't that. I stopped using it in January and I'm having a ton of new growth....hmmm🤔
I wonder if it's better to rotate shampoo every other day, rather than use a single one constantly.
Wow that’s nuts. I’ve noticed this in some shampoos I have used. Hmmm 🤔 what’s really going on I wonder what’s making our hair go thin than before when it’s supposed to be good for our hair. Wow!
Happy Friday beautiful! The weekend is almost here!!! 😍😘
Just bought the Redken Extreme Lenght.....oh no
It’s always made sense to me that putting something on the bottom of your hair won’t affect how the hair is growing out of the top of your head. But then what about every time I get my hair cut and I’m told it will grow faster if I get it trimmed every six weeks? That’s bogus, right?
The point of a haircut is to trim off the split ends so they don't split up the hair shaft. It's not that it makes your hair grow longer as in literally from your scalp it's to keep the ends healthy to stop them breaking off and splitting upwards from the bottom which would stop it getting longer overall. Anyone who colours their hair knows it's growing because the roots come through. It's about maintaining any length that you get. Products can help with this but split ends cannot be reversed (they can be kind of sealed to stop spreading) but the only way to rid them is to cut them off. If they are cut off but practices are not changed to maintain lengths and reduce damage the hair will split again.
Every six weeks is overkill unless your hair is damaged very easily or already in bad condition. But regular trims are the difference between thick healthy ends and raggedy see-through ones, even if the total length isn't changed very much.
Does hair vitamins actully work?
You are my favorite UA-camr of ALL TIME. no joke. Thank you Abbey ❤️
Ahhhh an honor 😍 thank you for watching ❤️
You cannot grow more hair follicles than those you are born with. This is another old wives tales about hair thickening.
