    Hi Abbey, as a PhD candidate in protein biochemistry and studying proteins for a living (I mean I do it 24/7) I cannot agree more with everything that you’ve said. No haircare product can speed up hair growth and no amount of essential oil can cause your hair to miraculously grow down to your butt. Once damage has been done to the alpha keratin in the hair, only a bond repairing product can replace those bonds and even then, that protein structure has STILL been altered and will never be the same. Our hair, from my perspective has been designed to withstand stressors, which is why we have so many layers (cuticle, medulla, cortex) but when we introduce physical damage such as bleaching and perming that’s when real hair damage really starts to show, and bond building products have been designed to help with this type of damage. But at the end of the day, once that protein structure has lost its structure i.e a loss in the hydrogen, disulphide and salt bridges that form, your hair will never be the same.

      @KA that is true, but it's only one study from what I can recall, so there isn't "concrete" evidence that rosemary oil is going to work for everyone. Some that have used rosemary oil complain about excessive hair loss, which to me shows that the results are variable and not reliable. Pumpkin seed oil has been shown to promote new growth, but that's taken as an oral supplement and not applied to the hair

    YES! No amount of keratin/collagen is actually going to improve hair unless you're already deficient in certain amino acids. We all have an "amino acid pool" so we eat proteins, our body breaks them down into individual amino acids, and then uses those amino acids to build new proteins. Ensuring you're eating enough and a variety of proteins is really all you have to do to make sure your body can make those proteins!

    I'll admit that I did fall for the "clean beauty" gimmick when it first became popular, but when I really started to think about some of the claims and did my own research on ingredients, I quickly realized that it was exactly that, a gimmick. Now I know what to actually look for and don't pay much attention to "clean" marketing. I also know what ingredients agree with my body and what don't, i.e. I can't use toothpaste with SLS (it irritates my gums and makes the inside of my mouth peel) but that doesn't make SLS a bad ingredient.

    • @user-du7if7xq3k

      I never “fell” for clean beauty, but I did gravitate toward products that had the marketing because the ingredients tended to be more what I was looking for. I want to try to stick to ingredients I recognize (not always “natural”, I’m all for “chemical” sounding names as long as I know they are safe). I know some people really roll their eyes at the clean beauty thing, but I am so grateful for Ulta’s clean beauty label, because a few years ago a study came out showing something like 80% of mascaras in the study, and majority of other makeup products contain specific carcinogens (PFAS) that build up in the body and have a tendency to stay there or take a long time to be excreted. Companies don’t care about us they care about money- they will make a new compound and find a use for it, and say that it’s been shown to be safe- because it’s only a few years old so there is not evidence to show it isn’t. It happened with radium, it happened with thalidomide. I’m not scared of “chemicals”, but I wouldn’t be quick to embrace a multimillion dollar industry that profits off you

    OH! I forgot to tell you I'm on my 4th application of Epres. GURL! So, I'm growing out my grays and my hair is half-gray, half-red. The red has been dyed and dyed and dyed and dyed and color stripped. You can literally close your eyes and run your hands down my hair, and tell where the gray stops and the red begins. The texture changes from soft and silky to crackling straw. The first use of Epres, I noticed, well, nothing. Second use, the feeling of silk extended much farther down my hair shaft. Third, even further. Today's wash day and my 4th (and final because it takes 1/2 a bottle to treat my long, thick hair), it's just maybe the last two inches of hair that still feel not quite silky. And even they are softer than they were! I'm definitely re-ordering it. It smells like someone left mothballs under a carpet in the 1970s, but I cannot deny the results.

    I would agree with everything except for the part about the FDA. In America it’s known that the FDA has little to no regulation on the cosmetic/haircare industry, so it’s so important that you research the ingredients yourself and don’t just trust a label that says “clean or natural”. Clean ingredients don’t make a product superior it just makes it clean. And all products try and say they are “superior” that’s the whole point of marketing.

    Hey Abby, so quick question. If I have died my hair loads and it’s damaged… if I was to shave my hair off and let it come through again naturally, would the new strands coming through still be damaged? Or would they be like new xxx

    • @ducklingscap897
      @ducklingscap897 Рік тому +3

      why would new strands be damaged? They have never seen bleach/hair die. So unless your diet is really bad your hair should come out healthy.

      If you are losing hair due to age, the only thing that can stop it is minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine. Maybe some supplements like Viviscal or Nutrafol, but the vast majority of supppements will not help either. I would start by consulting a doctor.

    Dr Dray did an interesting video on rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil for hair growth if people want to check that out - she is a board certified dermatologist. Claims that oils don’t help isn’t necessarily true just because there isn’t enough research yet to back up either claim - which is wild because I would think by now there would be more

    I used the Redken extreme length for the past 3 years. Yes it made my hair hella long but boy did it thin my hair. At first I thought my holy grail shampoo then after a year my hair started breaking off. At the time i was barely using any heat...so it wasn't that. I stopped using it in January and I'm having a ton of new growth....hmmm🤔

    It’s always made sense to me that putting something on the bottom of your hair won’t affect how the hair is growing out of the top of your head. But then what about every time I get my hair cut and I’m told it will grow faster if I get it trimmed every six weeks? That’s bogus, right?

    • @natmya243
      @natmya243 Рік тому +3

      The point of a haircut is to trim off the split ends so they don't split up the hair shaft. It's not that it makes your hair grow longer as in literally from your scalp it's to keep the ends healthy to stop them breaking off and splitting upwards from the bottom which would stop it getting longer overall. Anyone who colours their hair knows it's growing because the roots come through. It's about maintaining any length that you get. Products can help with this but split ends cannot be reversed (they can be kind of sealed to stop spreading) but the only way to rid them is to cut them off. If they are cut off but practices are not changed to maintain lengths and reduce damage the hair will split again.

    • @personmcdudeguy
      @personmcdudeguy Рік тому +1

      Every six weeks is overkill unless your hair is damaged very easily or already in bad condition. But regular trims are the difference between thick healthy ends and raggedy see-through ones, even if the total length isn't changed very much.
