    FYI: I'm not saying that all frizz near the root is breakage! What I'm referring to is what you see on Kim K in the thumbnail of this video. Lots of short broken pieces that at first glance look like frizz. You'll commonly see this on people with over-processed hair because their hair is already extra fragile. So using styling tools can make their hair snap easily. Some hair types are definitely just prone to frizz at the root and small hairs at the root could also be new growth- but that's a different convo 😊

      Hey Abbey ! my hairdresser tells me that you should never use coconut oil on bleached hair. I'm afraid to use ogx oil because I bleach my hair every 4 months. can you help me ?

      I am glad you have mentioned that it is potentially new growth. I've not processed my hair in well over ten years and I also dealt with telogen effluvium a few years ago in the midst of a nexus of stressful events. It's been a long process but I have a lot of these short hairs at varying lengths but my hair journey is legit and intentional. I am certain that it is new growth. I try to remember to take photos of the progression and it shows in my photos.

    I have been doing hair for 15 years. To add to the “frizz” discussion: it could also be new growth. I’ve seen many times people who are dealing with this, and I ask them if they went through a period of intense shedding 6months to a year prior. Often the answer is yes. They had a baby, they had surgery or an illness or intense stress. Many different things can cause us to shed excess hair, and then once we are healthy and able it (hopefully) regrows. That can look/ act like frizz because it’s a lot of hair that isn’t the same length as the rest of the hair.

    Yes!! After my emergency total hysterectomy at 53, I was fine. I was fine, I was fine. 3 months post operation, I was NOT fine. My hair was falling out in clumps. I habe very fine, thin grey hair. My pink scalp was much more noticeable. I went to my OBGYN and got on hormone replacement therapy. She told me, my hair loss was normal after a stressful situation. I said, I wasn't stressed, I was fine with the surgery, I'm much happier without the pain, cramping, bleeding, etc. She said, no, the surgery was stressful on the body, not mentally for me, but physically.
    Two years later, my hair is now back to it's normal, still thin but actually has a little more density. I believe it's because of balanced hormones!

    I’m glad you mention Biotin. As someone with a thyroid imbalance, it’s very common to lose lots of hair because of it. I’m hyperthyroid so my shed and growth cycle is sped up resulting in lots of shedding but also a lot of new growth which looks like frizz at my crown. Many people with thyroid issues take Biotin thinking it will help from losing the hair…the danger is taking Biotin 3-4 days before a thyroid test can give false testing results. Most people with a thyroid condition don’t need Biotin, they need to get their thyroid numbers dialed in (which is it’s own monster)

    Itchy/flaky scalp problem is very complicated in my opinion. I’ve tried many shampoos for sebum control, dandruff, calming shampoos, clarifying and so on, non of them helped. But then i’ve tried a more nourishing shampoo that ir more milky in color than clear, and also without sls. Helped instantly, and did not had to wash my hair this often too. Also gentle scalp scrub once or twise a month helped me aswell to go longer between washes :)

      @@janjay3319 Honestly I am still experimenting 😁 I’ve tried The Rituals- Rituals of Hammam shampoo (really liked it, but not every Rituals store has this line tho), and also The Rituals scalp scrub was amaziing on my hair (highly recommend! Other one i want to try is the Davines Nourishing shampoo (yellow line), it claims to be for dry, dehydrated scalp and damaged hair (which sounds exactly what i’m looking for). I have also tried Maui nourish & moisture shampoo (blue one), and it was not bad but it definitely felt weird washing my hair because the shampoo is very thick, but in my opinion if you have the money you could try their line since it is not that expensive (where i am from at least). And my last recommendation would be Oro Del Marocco Nourishing shampoo and conditioner, this duo made my hair feel so lightweight and bouncy while still being nourished, especially if you have fine hair and low to medium porosity you might love it since the conditioner detangles very nicely but also is very lightweight!

    I am 60 and have long hair. I find if I wet my hair and put it up/braid it, then rinse again after swim it tangles less. Hair can only absorb so much water. So if it's wet before entering it pulls less pool water.

      I work at a pool. You are correct.

    • @friendsofeli1318
      @friendsofeli1318 3 місяці тому +4

      Ps, you can use a conditioner or an oil. Please do it at least an hour or so before going into the water because the oil freshly applied to hair will immediately come off and float in the pool, and if everyone does this the water will get an oily film floating on to and will cause build up on the sides of the pool and filtration system. Not enough for you to really worry about but as a pool employee, I can tell and i get to clean it. But if you allow the product to absorb in you hair for a while before hand: It will help your hair be protected from the chemicals in the pool and the sides of the pool won't get so much build up. Also, same applies for sunscreen. It needs time to absorb into your skin 10 or so minutes. Otherwise, you are just rinsing it off.

  • @acarcarazza
    @acarcarazza 3 місяці тому +15

    Usually when the ends of my hair are really sticky it’s build-up from leave-in products, and I just solve that by squeezing excess shampoo from my roots all the way down to my ends and very gently massaging it the next time I wash it. I use a super gentle shampoo for this. I’ve never found that applying too much conditioner (or even a mask) can do that, if it’s a rinse-out product, and I have very low-porosity hair.
    About your second point: I don’t think your advice is wrong necessarily, but sometimes I wish you addressed the fact that people with very sensitive skin or allergies may not be able to use those sulphate shampoos etc., sometimes because of the sulphates themselves, sometimes because those shampoos typically contain other irritants and allergens, such as fragrances, and the same can be said of the conditioning products from those same brands.
    I also want to say that silicones don’t work for everyone. My experience has been the exact opposite of yours, I used to use silicones and my hair started feeling dry and brittle and actually breaking off at the ends. I remembered that when I had really damaged hair (from bleach) in high school I used to use ‘all natural’ products with incredible results. I have recently switched back to those kinds of products and seen a huge improvement (I did also chop off almost 3 inches of dry, damaged ends). 🤷‍♀️
    For people who might have a similar hair type and skin concerns, I want to recommend this ingredient: coco-caprylate. Look for it in serums and oils especially. It’s an ester derived from coconut oil and it’s a very good ‘natural’ alternative to silicones, as well as to coconut oil, if you find that it’s too heavy on your hair and/or can clog your pores. You can also buy it pure if you like to make your own hair oil by mixing different oils together, and add it to your mixture. It’s really good if you want to create an oil-based serum to apply on dry hair that won’t make it look greasy or weigh it down too much. You can use it pure, by itself, as a serum as well. I’ve never tried that, but if you find that all oils, no matter how little you apply, make your hair somewhat greasy this might be a good alternative.
    Also, the best oil that I’ve found for hair that can’t usually absorb pure oils very well is Camellia oil, if you want something that can be applied to dry hair without making it greasy. I literally use one to two drops and apply it to the ends and lengths of my hair, focusing on the tips and working my way up. I brush it through with a boar-bristle brush and I don’t find that my hair is greasy at all, just shiny and conditioned.
    I still use other oils, like Argan and sweet Almond oil, at night, so that’s another tip for low-porosity hair: apply your oils at night (still, only use a couple drops, as described above) so that they have time to absorb. Usually when I do this my hair isn’t greasy in the morning, there is no visible residue from the oils. I do it every night, as it also helps protect my hair from friction etc. If that still doesn’t work for you but you want the benefits from those oils you can try looking for/making a coco-caprylate based serum as I mentioned above, or just using them as a pre-shower treatment, which will help protect the ends and lengths of your hair when you wash it. Be careful though, still only use a few drops, you don’t want to create build-up! That can lead to the sticky hair issue mentioned at the beginning of the video.

      Thank you this is very helpful! I had really severe scalp psoriasis (controlled by medicine injections now) and I still have to be careful with my scalp or I’ll be sooo itchy. SLS and other primarily strong surfactant shampoos dry out my scalp just way too much. Silicones don’t work for me either, especially dimethicone. It’s so heavy on my hair and makes my curl pattern appear looser too. I’ve tried to go back to silicones and it just doesn’t work for me.

    Hi Abbey, regarding Biotin supplements (as in the oral tablets), what a lot of people don't know is that they can throw-off your thyroid function and lead to an over-active thyroid. So, as you correctly pointed out, you really need to be advised by your GP to take biotin orally. This happened to me recently, I had been taking biotin supplements daily for about 2 months and when I got my regular bloods done my results came back indicating an overactive thyroid. My clever GP - guessing that I, like many peri-menopausal women, might be taking biotin to help with hair loss - asked me if I had been taken biotin supplements and immediately told me to stop. She said I would be better off taking iron (as my ferritin levels were low) in addition to vitamin D (in Ireland we are all chronically low in Vit D as the sun NEVER visits us!). I am about 2 months in and already my hair/skin feel and look healthier AND my anxiety/mood has improved dramatically. So just a quick side-note for everyone (not just peri-menopausal women!!). xxx

    • @yeahumkay
      @yeahumkay 2 місяці тому +1

      Biotin doesn't actually affect your thyroid, but it does interfere with the results of thyroid tests (the markers they use) - so your doctor can improperly adjust your medication, which would definitely affect your hair (and everything else) (edited for clarification)

    Regarding scalp itching, I also get that from products that contain ingredients I’m sensitive to like sodium chloride, anything comedogenic and coconut oil. I have a dry scalp but immediately get itchy and also break out on my scalp and face when I use these products. Unfortunately almost every drugstore conditioner has sodium chloride in it so I’m struggling to find a budget friendly conditioner I’m not allergic to but also makes my hair soft.

    You’ve helped me heal my hair. I use many of your tips. I now scrutinize ingredients. I started dealing with androgenic alopecia a couple of years ago. Minoxidil helped, but wouldn’t get me back to a good place. Menopause is a bitch. Finally went to a derm and got topical combo of monoxidil/finesteride and a separate topical of Spiralactone. So much going on now! In 6 more months I know my hair will be in a much better place. In 6 months down, I have so much growth and it’s getting long. But, I have to use one in the am and one in the pm. So now I have to wash every other day. Using the ogx coconut oil prior to shampoo and using k18 and good conditioners have helped make my hair so soft, and keep my new growth healthy.

    I love when you talk about scalp health ✨ I think we have a lot of content/knowledge on taking care of our strands but often times the scalp is neglected!
    It'd be interesting to know about what you think about popular methods like scalp oiling or microneedling (as I've seen some claming it is a "miracle" hair growth method for both men and women with bald spots or for someone who wants to increase the general health of their scalp)

    For those with naturally wavy hair: I alternate between gentle shampoos and once a week or every two weeks a sulfate shampoo and this works well for my wavy (2B, low porosity, somewhat fine) hair. The only ingredient I avoid at this point is the accumulating type of silicone - dimethicone (this really is not good for my wavy hair). So I follow Abbey's recommendations and leave out what I know does not work for my hair. what I still haven't figured out is that my hair really does not seem to like blowdryers, it almost looses the waves if I blow dry and becomes very very dry, but becomes almost curly when left to air dry and looks much better - now this has some obvious issues interfering with lifestyle and etc. btw when it comes to "natural hair care" - conditioners containing shea butter are too heavy for my hair for example.

    I will say this too about a dry flakey scalp… sometimes it’s ingredient sensitivity or allergies! I’m one of the lucky folks actually allergic to SLS & it took me sooooo long to figure it out. In soaps it made me dry and itchy, I’d even get a rash around my mouth with some toothpastes (yes it’s in tons)… so sometimes switching to a gentle shampoo (I double cleanse) can help narrow down ingredients that are better tolerated.

    To add more possible confusion but solutions to the mix, another reason for itchy scalp is dietary. Many many MANY people range from intolerant to allergic to things they consume daily. If you do it long enough you may not even realize diet is the issue. And unless you do an elimination diet, you’re not likely to figure out the culprit. That said, common aggravators: egg whites, coffee, grains (oat, wheat, rye, rice, etc.), raw vegetables (cooked less likely to trigger), et cetera. If you regularly get flashes of hives or intermittent itchy scalp, pretty strong indicator of dietary issue. Something to test. ❤❤

Haven’t colored or chemically treated it in over 10 years. I don’t sleep on wet hair. I do use a silk pillowcase. Any idea what it could be from if it’s not from heat/styling?

I have noticed that some shampoos and conditioners will exasperate and I will feel itchy almost immediately after my hair dries. Other shampoo I can use and go days before I start To itch. Baby shampoo has actually been the best option for me so far. My face is very dry also and I need layers of a richer moisturizer. I am also postpartum…😅 and also acne prone! My hairdresser told me if I’m coloring my hair that means it’s damaged. But every time I use a shampoo and conditioner for damaged hair or a bonding product, my hair feels even drier and lifeless. Also every time I use products with a lot of protein my hair feels drier yet I’m told damaged hair needs more protein. But when I use products without protein or it only has one protein like argan oil, my hair feels softer. So I’m confused. Does that mean I’m really not damaging my hair from coloring it? I’m also 57 and have dry hair from hormones, post menopause and medications.

    I'm so happy that you freed me from the shackles of sulfate free/silicone free products. It's just a bit unfortunate as a Type 4 natural haired black woman bc the majority of black owned products are marketed as sulfate/silicone free. To be honest my hair is growing more & is easier to manage with the products I was using when I had a relaxer (containing sulfates & silicones). While I will be natural forever, I think the natural hair products aren't for me as they caused a lot of breakage & scalp issues. I think if you have Type 3-Type 4 hair try experimenting with adding sulfates & silicones back into your routine & see if you get positive results. I actually used to use Pantene & Aussie Moist when I 1st when natural (in 2013) bc all these products were't out at the time. I regret making the switch to natural products bc I lost a lot of hair. It's growing back but the past 2 years of using these products took me from brastrap length to chin length bob.

    There's a topic that is talked about very little, I think, and many hair problems are incorrectly "diagnosed" because of this. HARD WATER! I recently had a terrible experience with this. I went to my stylist in a panic because my hair was dry, brittle, like straw. I use hydrating shampoo and conditioner, a leave in conditioner, heat protectant, hair oil. Nothing worked. My stylist even told me my hair was completely stripped. I came home and changed the water filter in the shower and..., voila. Problem solved. So, many people will say your hair problems are because of product build up, heat damage, or what have you... but they aren't necessarily. Something as simple as hard water can cause the same symptoms as other hair problems without it being those problems. I'd say the first step to good hair care is a good shower filter to address hard water.

    So if conditioners and masks are essentially the same thing, why do you recommend applying conditioner after a mask? 🤔

    Hi! I’ve been following you for a while but I’ve never heard you talk about keratin or Botox for the hair. I live in Florida where most people here do some form of these treatments as the humidity is so bad. 6 months ago I stopped as I had a feeling the Botox was actually thinning my hair. Can you please do a video discussing these treatments? Thank you!
