You know singers actually always have water close to them on stage. Like just a little bottle on the floor of the stage that they drink a bit from before the start of every song. Gotta moisturize the vocals my man.
I have had more than one voice teacher tell me not to clear my throat, but they never told me why. This video explained it very nicely. Thanks for posting.
I'm a vocalist with asthma. When I try to sing through it, or past it, when I have a tickle or phlegm I cause an attack! I will try the warm ginger tea, thanks!
Add some cloves (2 or 3), black pepper (3), bay leaves (about 3), I use agave instead of honey, so with the ginger this works wonders for me when I'm singing, plus the ginger gives lots of energy.
I'm currently fighting to overcome silent reflux and exercise-induced asthma. But I discovered your video series and now I have more motivation to win the battle so I can learn to sing for real. Thank you!
I took montelucast and leveocitrizine every night and got excellent results. Also, I did all that acid cider vinegar and stomach friendly foods to stop reflux. Now I am much better❤
As a singer, I knew I wasn't supposed to clear my throat but I was never told why, so thanks for the reasoning behind why a singer or maybe almost anyone ought not clear their throat. Also, I am glad you mentioned warm tea for you throat. I was told warm liquids are good for singing and cold liquids aren't. Sometimes I have used hot sauce for limbering up my throat. Not super hot sauce but mild hot sauce. I think the peppers numb the throat and relax it. I don't know if it is actually a bad idea, but it was something I used to do when I was playing and singing in Dive Bars years ago. It seemed to work for me.
This comment is very old, but just thought that I’d share that I have a tea that has chili flakes in it for this very reason. The creator of the tea made it for someone who is a voice actor, so they need to keep their voice healthy. I definitely think hot sauce works

Hi Freya! Just stumbled upon this video and I’d like to thank you for your tips - they work for me. Learnt about the tea drinking technique from my hospital voice specialist but not about vocalising to dislodge phlegm. You filled the gap.
Phlegm is usually caused by allergies or dehydration. If and when your going to sing it's best to hydrate the day before and have a room temperature bottle of water close to you when you sing. Its never *moist* when its cold out. The cold air is incapeable of holding moisture like the hot. Your body is likely overproducing phlegm in cold to lubricate. -- Edit: also sinus drainage from mild infection/sickness and over lubrication seems to happen in the cold. Starlet D, A hoarse speaking voice can be caused by so many things. Your best course of action would be to visit a qualified ENT and have a laryngoscope.
I blame mine on smoking and drinking way more than anyone. You look like you might be one of us who use lots of substances. Marijuana dries out my body so badly and seems to be the worst.

My opinion is that clearing our throat is not bad. If it would be so bad, then everybody would have vocal chords problems because we all do it sometimes when needed. I think it becomes a problem when it becomes an habit and you clear your throat every 5 minutes or so.
My voice gets bad phlegm when I sing alot and I clear my throat to the point of tasting that blood taste so I know it'sdoing some damage but I just can't get rid of it. It's frustrating
Ever since I got over an upper respiratory infection several months ago, my low notes sound phlegmy and weird. I am not sick anymore. Can a uri cause permanent damage to vocal cords if you sang while you had it?
After respiratory infections, what tends to happen is that whilst the original infection has cleared, it leaves your throat, vocal cords and vocal folds irritated and inflamed. There are 2 things you could try, 1) get a small empty plastic bottle and a drinking straw..Half fill the bottle with warm(NOT HOT) water. Then put in the straw, and gently on a count of 5 blow through the straw to make the water bubble, then gradually go up to 10 and so on. This actually massages the vocal cords and soothes the inflammation. The other thing ( probably better known anyway, are steam inhalation, followed immediately by a warm steamy drink, to moisturise the throat mot to mention replacing the fluid lost through breathing in steam. Lots of warm drinks will help anyway, at any time, BUT if in about week you're no better, you need to see a doctor or in the worst case scenario if eg you're preparing for a concert or whatever an ear nose and throat specialist. Your solution is stated by you: Stop talking so much. Protect your voice.
Talking is bad for singers. Many professionals when they have concerts, don't speak at all the days before.
Rest your voice. And also, you need to go see an ENT doctor and do a stroboscopy to see if everything is ok with your vocal folds.
Oge Happiness .. It’s probably Spasmodic Dysphonia.....ask your ENT dr. I had same symptoms and it was a strain to talk...if you have Spasmodic Dysphonia, you will be advised to take speech therapy. Google Spasmodic Dysphonia and you will see your symptoms. I know how annoying SD is.
