How old are his brothers? They might be too old to volunteer for the games, or they see Peeta as old enough to have a chance to survive. Prim was 12 and in the book was said to be soft-hearted and kind. There was no possible way she could have won the Hunger Games. Meanwhile Peeta is older and stronger than most the boys in the district being the son of a baker. He had a large enough chance of winning that his brothers could justify letting him go

This video doesn’t take into account the fact that Katniss went into the hunger games already possessing amazing wilderness survival skills. This already gave her a huge advantage and was a major part of her strategy. Since she could survive off the land all she had to do was stay away from the other tributes and wait for them to kill each other starve to death. That’s why taking out the career packs supplies was so important. The careers learned mostly combat skills and ignored wilderness survival
While yes this is true the arena changes every year they talk about this in the books one year they said it was a frozen waste land where everyone but the victor froze to death and in haymitchs hunger games everything was poisoned except for the food at the cornucopia
@@brianwolf399 you’re totally right but in this specific year, Katniss was in her element. It was a Forrest environment which is a place she is very comfortable in.
Plus, in the books it was explicitly mentioned that Peeta and Katniss focused on survival skills in the training phase. Making knots, camouflage, edible plants, making fire and stuff. They didn't want to do combat skills, because they wanted to hide their best skillsets and loose their advantage of surprise. Plus strengthen your weaknesses is always a good idea.
In the books, the mutts don't eat Cato alive, they maul him and rip him apart while keeping him alive for hours until he begs to die. Katniss finally mercy kills him with an arrow and only then do they leave. Also the mutts are made out of the bodies of dead tributes. Katniss actually fights one that was made out of Rue's body. The Capitol is fucked up
It explains in the last book that the mutts weren't actually the dead tributes, but the game designers intentionally gave them similar eyes and faces which is almost as sadistic
@@lorcanorourke8822 I'm surprised that the capital didn't have mass surveillance like they have in China. That could have easily prevented the rebellion as you can kill of anyone who speaks against you.

@@hadi8699 if you read the book, they do. a whole subplot of the book is literally that they have mass surveillance. the only reason why the rebellion happened is because district 13 was annihilated by capitol bombings in the dark days, and the capitol assumed they all died, however they just went underground.

Also, the whole point of 'performing' for the judges was that they are given a grade depending on how dangerous they are deemed. This is super important to sponsors, public and to the other tributes. They can strategize who to target or stay away from. Because of her stunt with the apple, Katniss is given the highest score of the bunch, becoming the target of the career tributes
They basically changed Katniss from „frilly dress stupid girl“ whom she’d probably ignored for a bit to „please end this person“ with their rating
I don’t think the game makers will let tributes just hide 90% of the game anymore

Yes, they don’t want too many days with nothing going on, but at the same time they don’t want everyone super injured at the finale, they want people recovered and strong enough for epic fights. We can see that after the fire, where the gamemakers allowed Katniss like 2-3 days of no disasters after she and the careers + Peeta were stung by tracker jackers. It is assumed the other careers might have had nightmares and spent some time asleep as well, and since by this time a “Katniss vs Careers” drama was building up, they wouldn’t want Katniss dead by sending mutts towards her just because the games are boring, they’d give her 2-3 days to heal up

Peeta shows one hugely important way of surviving the Hunger Games: Give the viewers and sponsors a show and keep them keen. It's a reality TV show, and they need narratives to pique people's interest. From the get-go Peeta starts getting their attention (waving from the train), and he helps Katniss seem interesting too with the 'star-crossed lovers' story. He's quick-thinking and know how to turn the odds seriously in his (and Katniss') favour. Katniss is no slouch when it comes to physical combat, but Peeta uses his brain to get them closer to the win.

Assuming the wasps make a nest much similar to ones we have, like was depicted in the movie, wouldn't it have been much easier to cut the nest off the branch directly? She was going to risk getting stung cutting the branch so shouldn't one quick firm slice through the top of the nest accomplished the same thing? My gut says that the probability of getting stung would either be less or equal to cutting the branch.

3:16 The problem with Gale volunteering is that he had to stay behind to feed not only his own large family - which is why he needed to enter his name so many times - but he now had to feed Prim and Katniss’ mother as well. Only one tribute could win and there HAD to be a male and female tribute.
If he volunteered for Peeta in order to protect Prim in the arena, thereby dying and leaving his large family to fend for themselves, he’d risk Katniss being reaped the following year, thereby again dooming his family AND hers.
Even worse is him volunteering for Peeta to protect Katniss, risking them both dying and leaving their families to starve.
They had to play it the way they did. It was Gale’s last year in the reaping so he was free and clear if Katniss lost, which was likely.
Arguabley Rue's death was more beneficial than her survival. Rue would've had to be killed off in the end leading to people seeing her as a murderer, whereas they instead view her as an ally, plus Rue's district probably hates the other group now, due to killing Rue. Overall there's less deadweight and a reputation gain instead of a reputation loss. Pog

the book explains a bit more about why katniss immediately climbed down: she needed to grab the bow and arrows from glimmer's dead body before it was taken away with it when the gamemakers clean it up. considering the bow and arrow being her best and only weapon she can use effectively it was a gamble she was willing to take

Actually in the book Rue lit three fires in three different places so that the careers were confused. Also it takes time to get the smoke to actually go into the sky. Rue also put her special leaves that were on Katnisses wounds on the third fire wood to show that she was there but not able to light the fire. I also think you should have mentioned when Peeta saved her from the careers because she thought it was a hallucination but Rue tells her differently.
1st Peeta did not run away from the cornacopia in the book, 2nd he went to the career pack to protect katniss (he did not get caught by them). Also in the book Katniss and Peeta did not ignore the survival skills they went to rope tying, recognising edible plants, camoflage, fire starting and more.

I’m honestly surprised that Thresh didn’t win. I think if Rue never saved Katniss and Peeta died then Thresh would have won the games. He’s very strong and big and he had so many supplies. He’s also fast and the only reason he died was because of Cato. I don’t think Cato was fully fit to win the games
His fight for three days against Cato and lost. So we dont know how the fight went. But if Rue and Katniss never teamed up. The other career tributes would survive and they would hunt him together. So his chance would be smaller as fighting only against Cato
I thought he had a stalemate with Cato, and then Cato survived by retreating on the top of the cornucopia while he died because he was vulnerable out in the open with the dogs?

Please enlighten a person who hasn't read the book or watched the movie but I interested enough in the movie to watch clips 😅
In the books a couple of these problems are accounted for.
The fire happens before Katniss gets stuck in the tree, so when she cuts the wasps down they're subdued by the smoke and only a couple sting her, then she does wait for them them leave before dropping down.
Her and Rue's fire distraction plan is better, too. They plan a full route with 3 bait fires and rendezvous point far away from all 3 of them, the plan is for Rue to be constantly moving and for the three fires to be a distraction for most of the day as they're very spaced out. Also, Rue is poor and a farmer, she probably knows exactly how to start a fire with a flint or sticks
Also, the mines are too far apart to blow the whole thing up with one mine, that's why she used the apples, that many at once sets off a chain reaction
I died at the part where Peeta just runs the hell out of the cornucopia. That would be me lol🏃💨

Why would they put landmines that can trigger a chain reaction so close to each other? She doesn't need a distraction, a couple of apples can trigger it, wait till the tributes are there shoot an arrow. Win the game.

In the books they’re placed In a way that won’t trigger them but the apples fell on the land mind causing some supplies to explode and then some of those supplies landed on other land mines

@@pauledwards2052 I think he means in the movie the land mines triggered eachother. In the book they needed the supplies to fall on them to trigger. If she just shot the land mines she would have killed maybe one or two, not everyone. Maybe it would have worked, but sneaking up initially would have been difficult as well. I can see it killing one person.
Katniss has skill as a hunter and an archer, far better than what I could do, I've shot some bows before, and it's not easy at all, the fact that Katniss has the ability to think and act under pressure while working with a difficult ranged weapon like this means that Cinema, as much as I like their videos, is not giving Katniss as much credit as she deserves
We had an archery unit for 8th grade PE. You need to be STRONG to be able to draw an arrow and properly aim it.

29:31 A lot of small details from the books were left out of the movies. The mines were spaced far enough apart to where setting one off wouldn't trigger the others. She had to blow up multiple mines at once in order to cause the chain reaction

peeta was a genius to the audience, he constantly waved and smiled at them despite not agreeing with the hunger games. in the second movie, his “if it weren’t for the baby” line was so smart and paired with katniss who has amazing survival ability and skills, as well as her rebellious side. they made a great pair and im honestly not surprised that they won

Honestly I feel like Rue’s death was a big advantage to Katniss. Because think about it, if the game revolves around getting people to like and sponsor you, imagine how they would react at the end when it’s only say Katniss Rue and a few others left. Seeing Katniss kill Rue would totally make the public want to turn on her. You run into the same problem when you’re in a group because not all of you can survive. And even if you know only one can survive, after spending so much time with these people you’d unfortunately develop an emotional attachment to them making them harder to kill. Cato, who was left at the end with Katniss and Peta, is proof of this because he mentions/hints at his affections to Clove his district. Imagine if Katniss hadn’t have killed her… *would he truly be able to kill her? And even if he could.. imagine the *PTSD that would come from that. Idk maybe I’m just reading into this too much 😂

But at the end of the game they don’t need sponsors or people to like them. The sponsors are to survive during the game but at the end it’s just them alone so that doesn’t affect it.

The way Peeta used camouflage is bizarre to say the least. It looks so realistic that even an individual with a high intelligence level could be fooled! If I were him, I would use that realistic camouflage to wait out the rest of the game.
Seeing as 2 victors before already won doing that, the gamemakers definitely would not have allowed it. Along with the fact that it's boring, they would push a disaster to bring him to other tributes.
in the books katniss knew the risks of irritating the wasps, by then it was also clear that luck had a huge part in the games. Later a few of the stories of other winners even directly says that they won because of luck like the cliff shield rebounding a weapon at the attacker and people dying of hunger while trying to track an avid survivalist who never even fought (I think I remember this one).

One of the things that set the Hunger Games apart from other death games is that your skill and preparation matter much less in the end. What matters is the narrative; if your personal story throughout the Games is compelling and/or relatable enough, you win, that simple.
Not really that simple, I do agree that it does help when you have a good narrative like Katniss and Peetas first game or even Finics. But there is skill involved and you do have to prepare. Gotta survive to the point where you can tell your story😅. Either way, I believe it’s of 50/50 importance

I feel it would have been incredibly cruel for Katniss to use Gale's affection to make him volunteer. Being in a group has it's advantages but the bad side of being in as group is that eventually they would have to turn against you.
i agree. its wrong to make anyone feel like they must go into the games with you or instead of you. Them choosing to volunteer is their own decision though

In the book, it shows that only a female can replace a female and a male for a male. In the book, the volunteering system is also viewed as a formality because it was almost never used.
Isn't it more common in the career districts? I think it's said in the books that teenagers in the career districts train in the event they are selected. Considering how eager the Career tributes are to fight, it wouldn't be a stretch for some of them to volunteer in the event a 12 year old is selected.

It's obvious a girl can't volunteer for a boy or vice versa because they say more than once that each district's tributes are always a girl and a boy. Can't have two of the same.
Peeta is one of the only characters who doesn’t need plot armor to survive
It seems like he did there at the end though, when it was him vs Katniss. See, she had the long range weapon, whereas I'm pretty sure he only had a knife. There is no logical reason at that point for her not to kill him, retire, and live in luxury for the rest of her life. Am I missing anything?
@@midnightshadow1491 Katniss is too compassionate for her own good. She wouldn’t want to live knowing she killed him. He did need plot armor at the end but I’m just saying Katniss couldn’t kill him.
@@badname7684 I dunno. You bring up an interesting point. To play the devil's advocate, she had already killed a couple people. One guy she shot in the chest with her arrow, though that would probably fall under the classification of self defense. She also executed Cato with an arrow to the head, which was a mercy killing, but it was definitely a direct kill. She also indirectly killed the golden hair girl by dropping a nest of deadly wasps on her, so I'd credit her with that kill (on the grounds that her actions were performed with lethal intent.) One could also make the case that by blowing up the stockpile of rations and supplies, she rendered the sentry's life worthless, and was indirectly responsible for his death. However, that might be a bit of a stretch, so we will not count that as a kill. Therefore, Katniss has three confirmed kills. Because of this, I would presume that she certainly could execute Peeta if her life depended on it. However, as you pointed out, she is quite compassionate, and probably wouldn't like to execute somebody who had surrendered. However, if she could turn off the empathetic part of her brain, she might be able to loosely classify this as a mercy kill, as he had the circulation to his leg cut off with her emergency field dressing, though again, it's a bit of a stretch. I guess it just depends on whether she considers her survival important enough to warrant an execution.

The wasp point: she did know that they were tracker jackers. Also the venom only got out of her system because of Rue’s interference. If she had remained tied in the tree, she would’ve been passed out longer, leaving her open for someone to take her out.
The gift: they did think it was a trap, but Katniss decided it would be worth the risk. Also there was nothing at the training facility to suggest they were teaching them how to cauterize a wound.

The problem with getting Gale to take Prims place is that there has to be 1 male and 1 female tribute, and only the respective gender can volunteer as tribute. Gale loves Katniss, but he probably loves his family more at this time before he has watched her endure the games alongside Peeta, so relying on him to take the place of the male tribute and protect Prim is not something we could communicate to him or something he would be willing to do, not just for his own survival but for his family. He is the bread winner of his household, and if he died then that entire burden would be placed on our shoulders as Gale's partner in crime. The best case scenario after Prims name is drawn is that she has a good friend at school who would take her place, but that doesn't happen, and so we're the only person left to save Prim.
I think the idea is for him to offer tribute in *Peeta's* place so he can *protect* Prim in the arena.

Gale was protecting Katniss' family during the hunger games. Assuming they are equally capable, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to provide for both families. Unless you mean the guilt of sending him to his death. Then yeah, I'd feel pretty bummed out.
@@datzeusboi7784 ah. Gale is like the oldest that can compete and Prim is the absolute youngest that can compete. The only reason the romance idea came up was because Peeta had a crush on Katniss for a long time already. I doubt Gale could stomach making goo goo eyes at his crushes sister let alone making out with her on camera. Or continuing that relationship. It'd scar prim for life.
One major mistake when referencing the fire distraction for destroying the supplies. Katniss is from the poorest distract that produces coal, and Rue is from another very poor district. Although the districts do have electricity, in district 12 it is sporadically available (outside the Hunger Games broadcast) and Rue's district probably likewise has interruptions in their electricity. This means fire is probably the way most food is cooked, hence making fire is probably a skill the poor districts would have over the rich districts. Fire-making is survival in poor districts, and taught at a young age
I think this brings up a question. What method is taught. It would realistically range from flint, and steel to lighters.
Doing it from scratch is still kind of unnecessary. Though it wouldn't be unrealistic to find flint. Steel could be recycled from something else.

It’s like a lot of the players dumped their stats into 1-2 categories of stats representing survival strategies. Peeta stat dumped hard into INT and CHR, the careerists dumped into the STR, AGL, END. Fox face dumped into INT and AGL. Katniss split her points more evenly, Rue spec’d medicine.

@@StagedCaptivityt’s a joke based on rpg games, particularly of the fallout series. Think of each character as having a different build and play-style. STR=strength, PER=perception, END=endurance, CHR=Charisma, INT=intelligence, AGl=Agility. I’ll give you a few examples on what each attribute means and how that relates to each character.
Take Peeta, he’d easily lose a physical fight with the careerist’s(who I said would have high physical skills like strength, endurance, agility), however what he does have is high intelligence(shown in his fieldcraft and strategic thinking like when he formed a temporary alliance with the careerists as they know he’s a savant he can buy time to think of a better plan while having their protection, also goes into charisma) and charisma as he’s the more out-going gregarious out of the duo with Katniss and plays on the capital audience’s expectations and sentiments(when he pretends katniss was pregnant with his baby in the second movie). Peeta thinks in the future while most other characters think in the present. Whether that’s out-thinking the careerists and playing on the pathos of the crowd which nets him and Katniss in-game gifts.
Like I said the careerists(Glimmer, Clove, Marvel, and Cato) would have at least average intelligence and personality traits but would be high in physical aspects. They’ve been training their entire lives to dominate the hunger games so they would be very high in physical traits like strength, endurance, agility, perception etc. they’re more average on the cerebral stats since they’re just as smart as the need to be but like I said about Peeta, they think in the present moment which would be hunting down other contestants. They don’t really need to think ahead though since they can merk 99% of the other contestants. But somebody with high intelligence and charisma like Peeta can out-think them like he did when he convinced them to not merk him right off the bat which bought him time.

She was the shyer of her district’s duo(her male counterpart handled most other interview) so lower charisma but she’s also proven she’s as smart as Peeta when it comes to wildlife/plant recognition and field craft and I gave her high agility/endurance as she just straight Usain Bolt sprints to the cornucopia and then the forrest the minute the game starts(and intelligence, she knows that the rush for the cornucopia will get half of the contestants merked in the first minutes alone which is what happened) and INT/AGL on display once again when she safely crossed the minefield to get a few more things from the center. In the end nobody catches her(I do believe she merked herself by eating the poisonous berries instead of being unalived by the careerists as again she’s shown to again be intelligent and knows a lot about plants). But again like Peeta, she would not win a physical fight and it’s probably what would of happened to Peeta if he weren’t protected by plot armor.
Katniss as the protagonist has more middle of the road stats and a good slightly above average all around stats/build. She’s better than some but not as good as the careerists which why I called her the Jack of all trades. She has pretty good agility and intelligence(just not as good as Peeta/fox face), she’s more physical than most but not as good as the careerists. If you had Katniss on the character attributes selection menu like in a video game(1=worst, 10=best) it would be like Katniss has a 5,6, or 7 in each attributes(probably a 4 in charisma since again she’s not as talkative or engaging).
The joke about rue is based on rpg video game aspects like perk/skill selection. It’s like saying you spec’d into guns to become a gunslinger or melee weapons to be a sword-master. Saying rue spec’d into medicine was a way of saying she’s not that useful at anything but that(which she didn’t need to be, her narrative point was to be a sacrificial lamb to motivate Katniss into dismantling the system) such is a min-maxxed character. Which is putting all your skill points into one aspect so that your character is a savant in one area but useless outside of that specialized area.
Rue's death made me sob out loud in the movie theater :'( . I knew it was coming, but I cried anyway.
I’ve always wondered why that girl from District 5 didn’t take all four bags to prevent everyone else from getting them, and if she would’ve have had enough time, Katniss should’ve at least taken the bag for District 2. Not only would it prevent the other tributes from getting what they need, but there’s a chance that whatever was meant for them would help us as well.

If you see someone in a tree like Katniss was, the best way to kill them instantly is to take fire from the fire wall or make a fire using sticks to burn the tree and the player in it to death. They’d have no other choice but to go down so you can kill them too.
Cato had one of the most brutal deaths in the books. He had some special armor on that protected him from the bites for the most part. Katniss and Peeta had to listen to him scream for hours before the blood loss ultimately got him.
You forgot to mention why the Game Makers started the forest fire to get Katniss to move. She was getting close to the border so the force field and because of Haymitch using the force field to win his Hunger Games they make sure no one else can do the same thing. Also the mutts didn't kill Cato, Katniss did because they mauled him for hours and he didn't die from the armor he was sponsored.
The mutts were genetically designed to kill as painfully slow as possible it wasn't mainly because of Cato's armor.

A lot of people always clowned on Peeta, but he knew what was up more than anyone.
I've thought Peeta was the best player of the Hunger Games for a while. Katniss is a warrior and uses her considerable strength and physical skill, but Peeta uses his brain to play the game and secure an advantage by presenting an interesting story to the viewers and sponsors. Peeta is no fool and does indeed know what's up.
In the book it's explained how Katniss takes care of Rue because Rue reminders her of her little sister, Prim. That's why Rue's death effects Katniss so much.

All in all you are right about most things. The best plan is definitely NOT to volunteer as tribute, lol. I do have 2 gripes though. Katniss And Rue didn't know about the buried explosives, and didn't even know that the mounds were buried explosives until Katniss saw the Fox-Faced Girl jumping around them. Rue also wasn't supposed to defend herself against The Careers. I imagine she was going to climb a tree and hide, which would explain why it took her some time to get back to Katniss when she was calling for her. I can understand the plan of sticking together though, especially being the only person with a ranged weapon and the skill to use it.
The second issue I have is when Katniss finds the injured Peeta. She couldn't just cauterize the wound, because she saw that he had blood poisoning, and knew that nothing she could do would stop it from killing him. That is why she took the risk of going to the Cornucopia for the medicine, even after promising Peeta that she wouldn't. In the book she even gives him something to make him sleep so that she can sneak out of the cave to go and get it. It both played on the love story they were setting up and the underdog story, with her risking everything to save him.

There's actually a mistake in the "1 in 1000" odds for the reaping ceremony. An eligible candidate can sign up for what's known as a Tessera. In exchange for a years supply of oil and grain, a candidate can have their name entered in an additional time each year until they turn 18. Many in district 12 do this to help feed their families. Katniss herself has done this 3 times each year since she turned 12, meaning she gains 4 entries per year (ones from last year stay, making older contestants more likely. Which makes Prim's single entry choice probably closer to 1 in 10,000 or more
That's a pretty dumb rule, they could just have every single person in the district do this every year, and nobody would have any worse odds of going than when they started, but the entire province just gets to sit around on permanent vacation 24/7. They're not dumb and they made those rule to show you that the odds is never in your favor, and you only lived because the Capitol want you to.
@@gavinjenkins899 You're forgetting 1) the rule of the entries piling up over the years AND 2) the rule that makes it so the maximum Tessarae portions you can take out is the number of family members you have.
1. A twelve-year-old will ALWAYS have a slimmer chance of being picked than an eighteen-year-old, if they take out the same amount of Tessarae. If everyone agrees to take out one portion a year, then at twelve you will have 2 slips, at thirteen you will have 4 slips, and so on.
It's not realistic to expect everyone to only take out Tessarae once in their whole lifetime (at age twelve) in a district like 12, and even if they could somehow manage that, it still wouldn't make things equal because one slip is always added each year regardless of if you take out Tessarae or not.
2. It's really hard to make everyone take out equal amounts of Tessarae. Someone like Gale, who has four other family members, can take out a maximum of five portions a year and add that to the one mandatory entry per year, means that he will add six slips of his name every year (which is what he did in Canon because he has 42 slips in the bowl when he's eighteen). Katniss however, will only ever have her name entered up to four times each year with her family of three.
There will inevitably be kids who are forced to take out more than one Tessarae portion per year. Kids who have younger siblings under the age of twelve, for example.
The rules have probably been made with ideas like yours in mind. There aren't many loopholes that can be exploited, and they aren't dumb at all.

To be honest, I think blaming Rues death on Katniss was a stretch. Sure there were some holes in the plan. But not major holes. Like you said, the fire would've taken time to enlarge and the smoke to rise. This gives Rue time to make a run for it before the career tributes even notice a fire is there. With Katniss already by the pyramid, it gives her the most amount of time possible to destroy it because she can immediately start firing at the apples when they leave.

Gotta disagree about the tree with the wasps. If she passed out safely in the tree her pursuers would of returned. The first thing to do is always get out of a dangerous scene, I think she had very little choice.
Also, in the book it’s stated that the bow and arrows would be taken with the body left from the wasps (forgot her name lmao). Katniss definitely made the right choice taking the weapon and risking the wasp stings rather than losing the opportunity to get the best weapon for her and being in a horrible position.
She also had to abandon the rope when fleeing from the fire (or at least that is very likely). So no way to tie herself in place in order to not fall off the tree when she passes out. Or not enough time to get it out and coordinate it around the tree safely even if she managed to take it along while waking up to an approaching fire and running for her life.

Yes!! Because Cato DID come back. He saw Peeta yelling at Katniss to run away, and then slashing his thigh. Even if he couldn't reach Katniss in the tree, he would still know exactly where she is. The Careers were clearly better off than Katniss, because they were up and about (making the supply pile trap) way before Katniss, who had Rue taking care of her. If she'd stayed in the tree, she would've been right back to where it started, only now without Peeta or Glimmer.
