WoW was a social network before we really had much social networks. The reason we can't have that emotional experience anymore isn't just because the game lost its touch (which is definitely has), but the sole reason it was such a phenomenon was because it was a virtual social hub with a side of fantasy rpg. Not really. Blizzard dialed back ALOT this expansion on the mechanics. The game is alot simplier in terms of what you need to do once you cap. At the same time, you have the the fact that MMORPG simply isn´t that overly popular that it was 15 years ago. Back during 2004-2010 WoW was a massive phenomenon because there weren´t any real alternatives and the genre was super popular.
Now-a-days you have the league of legends, fortnites etc that draw alot of players.
I do believe, that If blizzard keeps making the game simpler moving foward it might be enough to draw more people, however I agree that right now the game seems hollow.

I kind of think retail wow should remain fast paced and fairly complicated, just so that it can contrast the classic versions that are also available. I mean, if it all was the same there would be less options for people.

Classic is nice because you start as a nobody and as you level you truly feel like your character is developing. The fact that you’re a random citizen of your capitol city who is now forced to get stronger by fighting wolves, raptors, panthers, etc. Every piece of gear makes you truly feel like you’re growing in power. And eventually you get strong enough to take on monsters, elemental lords, dragons, and more. It’s true rpg.
Retail starts you as a god. Being able to pull 20 mobs and wreck them easily. You get everything handed to you. There’s no reason for community. BOA gear makes obtained gear feel like nothing. You get a free mount right off the bat. No true rpg elements imo.

I play retail until the story is done and then I basically quit. I wish they added more world content and by this I do not mean worldwuests but just more areas, more exploration. The experience you have playing the game expresses to me, that you are one person playing the game, a loner. MMO's are based on the players who want to experience the game with others, who may share the same interests. Let me tell you something, you can not make everyone happy, long enough, in the game. My fun in the game is experiencing the game with others who share the same goals as I do. I know I can play alongside these individuals; because they are great people to be around with. As a leader of a guild, you have to decide what to do with the time that is given to you to do, for them. Finding good players is easy. Getting them to communicate, coordinate, collaborate & work together as a team through some team speaking app, is the challenge. No matter what happens, what pain we face, and in death, the Wheel keeps turning. Always.
Sad will be the day when every man is absolutely content with the life that he is living, with the thoughts that he is thinking, with the deeds that he is doing. Even though the scripting of the bosses and everything was much better and everything worked properly. It didn't give me that feeling that my actions were recognized or even mattered on the server. On that private server I was playing on, you could make a name for yourself, especially when it came to pvp. And Alliance and Horde were beefing 24/7 always fighting each other over turfs or invading the main cities. You could literally organize raids by yourself with random people without being in a guild, and you could also organize pvp parties with no problems. Not to mention that there were always discussions on the forums about who's the best hunter or warlock or tank on the server etc. When I came to retail everything kind of felt lifeless. Instead of talking with people before partying up, you had dungeon finders and stuff that would automatically pair you up, no talking needed, it's just weird man.

See the profession system for example, there is no need to be that complicated. Make the WoW simple again, so everyone can enjoy playing it without having to search wowhead, icy veins etc for everything that he does in game. Make it again simple, make it again fun.

It takes the thrill out of it. Ignite the MMO and change the mob pathing - add a few random elite rares around the world and buff the mobs like Asmon said so the people expecting it to be the same classic to be reintroduced to the true classic hardcore. They could make it feel like a whole new world which is the most important aspect for an MMO. It could ignite a whole new genre of WoW if they do it right. Good Takes imo. Listening about hairy man got me thinking:
DK in Cata is so much better than Retail:
    1) You have snapshotting, meaning cool decision-making mid-fight;
    2) You have a lack of resources even being geared, meaning making decisions mid-fight.
The DK in retail is a joke. Yes it looks cool, but
    1) No decision-making what-so-ever.
    2) Overflooded with resources for no particular reason.
    3) In Dragonflight I couldn't take half my toolkit cuz some genious at Blizz decided that's a good Idea. For example, no Epidemic. In War Within they freaking left us without an interrupt (in PvE) for zero reason.
    4) I really wanna see this person who invented Breath playstyle. Same goes for unholy AOEing while standing in death of decay. Man, are you okay, dude?
    >>> DK in Cata feels miles ahead in terms of satisfactory gameplay. I was contemplating maybe I'm that old guy, but no, it's just not a very good design.
    The good things are:
    - Death Advanes makes you immune to throw-backs. Very unique and tematically interesting.
    - Apocalypse is cool.
Been playing DK since inception, cutting edge PvE and PvP glad.

11:00 - It's not just nostalgia for "the way things used to be."
A lot of older MMORPG games, perhaps World of Warcraft most of all, had a fundamental change in design philosophy that affected new and old players alike.
In making the game too easy to grow in and too easy to attain max level, game developers made it too difficult to "get into."
Or maybe better stated a different way: in making it so easy to level up and hit max level, game developers made it too difficult to care about your character and the world that you're supposed to feel a part of.
So, when you hit max level in Classic WoW, you feel like you did back in the day when you hit max level. It took time. It took patience. It took cooperation with other plays. You had to learn, and grow, and figure things out. You were challenged. Other players helped you out, and you helped them out. You got to feel a part of a larger world, meet more characters, hear more tails of the legendary lore characters of the game, and so on. In modern WoW, you can get from 1-60 or even 1-70 in just a couple of days as a new player. And you'll be referred to be all sorts of titles along the way: "Champion," "Maw Walker," or even simply "hero." But it all feels hollow, because you never accomplished anything, and you never really felt like you were a part of the world over those 50, 60, 70 levels.
In Vanilla, TBC, and Wrath Classic, I went through dozens and dozens of different regions, towns, cities, and dungeons just to get to level 50, another several to get to level 60, another several to get to level 70. And I felt like I was in a 'real' living world, that my character's actions and growth mattered, and that the people I met/helped along the way were a part of this story too.
I don't give a damn about my modern WoW characters, because they're just sitting at max level having not really done anything except for just my first character. And even then, I only marginally feel more a part of the world. (Having started in BFA content right as Shadowlands launched as a new WoW player.)

Classic WoW really felt like an adventure it also forced you to interact with other people, both Horde and Alliance in a way that really emphasized the MMO part of MMORPG. You spent most of the time walking until you got a regular mount at 40, but even then it forced you to actually interact with the world rather than just flying over it. Quests were difficult, leveling was SLOW, STV was a nightmare of ganking plus the size meant that especially at lower levels you often died making it feel exciting. Later WoW felt like an RPG that happened to have an online component. They speed leveled you through so all previous content and zones became obsolete, they added a ridiculous amount of races, mounts, armor, etc. etc. Before it felt exciting and like an adventure last time I played it felt goofy and lonely.

When Corona hit, I had nothing better to do than try WoW (I've played it before on various private servers, but didn't feel like it should) so I took a shot to try retail. My first impression was out of words, couldn't even grasp the huge world that I had yet to experience catching up with the previous years I was playing on private servers. I played for approximately 2 years until I got burnt out. I'm almost in my 30s with a white-collar job and a wife, I do game from time to time, but what you mentioned there about being fast-paced, complicated, and getting more and more difficult is what hit deep into my heart. It's been over a month since my sub expired and I decided not to continue, at least for now. My pleasure it's to enjoy every single bit of existing pixels, but I feel rushed up, forced by the masses to hit the end game and be part of the elite (which I never intended to nor tried). I will compare here two other games that I play on a regular basis, Modern Warfare 2 and Hell Let Loose. One it's a fast-paced, energy-draining shooter, and the other one it's a strategic WW2 simulator that requires tactics and patience. There you have it, retail vs classic. Maybe for some people, the new patches lack activities or content, but for me, they're way too fast dropped and by the time I get to enjoy some new mechanics, they're already obsolete and I'm 2 updates behind already. Make this game more enjoyable by taking away the dumb-down mechanism. (Yada-yada, go play classic, yada-yada) Really want to play Dragonflight with less complicated tricks, that's just it.

I started playing on MoP, just changed to vanilla hardcore, so no nostalgia bias.
Here are my reasons why classic is better:
    1) World seems more organic. You do not see every man and his dog carrying ashbringer around (like in legion).
    2) It is harder. Leveling is a challenge and not a mindless grind.
    3) Lore and gameplay are grounded. You do not see random Tyrande falling out of the sky and blue Uther running around with wings on your 3rd time saving the world this week.
    4) Slower pace. It takes time to think, and not just spam 3 abilities with no cooldown while mobs around you die.
    5) Later expansions became a sad parody of WoW ever since Arthas was defeated.
No more lich king ? guess what, a huge dragon appeared, and also some island with pandas.
    Time travel time!
burning legion attacks again and we all get artifacts for free, to kill the sense of value just in case. Now there is nothing to strive for anymore.
    Sargeras decides to stab.
Now each one of us is a choosen of Azeroth and we fight for some random crystal that is very important all of a sudden.
Next expansion: nobody cares about it, now we have a dramatic trainwreck that involves every character from WoW.
    Now dragon furries.

Some people wanna collect their 10 millionth mount as they cleave through mobs while listening to their podcast in the background after a hard day at work. Not knocking it.
I just wanna hop on a horse and venture into dangerous lands.
One game can't cater to both.

I have logged into retail once in the past 9 years. I loaded up, got excited to see my toons. I mounted my Ashes of Alar, because I hadn’t seen it in years-big nostalgia trip. Then I got about ten whispers telling me to stop showing off and that I should kill myself. So I uninstalled that garbage lol

maybe this is a bad take but i think a good version of retail wow mythic+ wouldn't be needed.
you do normal dungeons, heroic dungeons and then raids. i feel like thats how the progression system should work. it feels more natural.
you shouldn't get better gear from dungeons than from raids. with a few exceptions maybe like a trinket or one armor piece.
and dont get me wrong mythic+ can be absolutely enyojable. but it kinda destroys the natural progression.

Ive been saying it for years... make WoW 2. Kill Azeroth with that giant sword in Silithis thats been there for 5 years now and let us remake the Horde vs. Alliance storyline on a new planet. We all go to a new planet and just fight for territory to survive. Take us back to Vanilla with better graphics

I think that was the point, after Shadowlands and the back last that got I think they wanted something simple for Dragonflight to make it like a fresh start again. And it seems to have worked as the expansion as been really well received from what I’ve seen.

Why do people pretend WoW was this dark gritty story the entire time? It wasn't, it certainly wasn't ever since WoW launched in 2004. DF story telling is pretty well done, especially compared to the previous few installments.

@@Halikarz31 Bro, the Undead were capturing humans in Tirisfal and infecting them with plague. Just stop with this 'we were always good guys" shit. Stormwind asks you to take out Van Cleef, a guy who wanted payment for the work he and his men did. It was always tonally grey. The tone shifted around 2009/10 with WOTLK.

@@Halikarz31 huh? Have you ever paid attention to the quest texts? Do you read the quests? Most of them are pretty dark, and youre frequently cutting heads off mobs to bring back to someone. No one is saying its a super dark story, like diablo or something, but to pretend like the tone is not completely different in modern wow is just ignorant.

i disagree with a lot of what he said. DF is the best expansion to date. The mythic affix tweaks going to make S2 mythic plus a lot more enjoyable and what was annoying is gone (for the most part) the Raid fights in vault were not very difficult IMO and had decent encounter design. Dragon riding is fucking awesome. Im used to having it so much that NOT having it going to old world feels bad but I see this as a permanent feature by the time DF is over. I did not do PVP so I can't speak for it but the story and questing all felt nice/fun. I have time for few hours each night so maybe not playing 8h/day is preventing me from getting burned out.
