They also conveniently forget to mention that the Lexus is using a CVT. That's a lot of money for a vehicle that will most likely need a new transmission after 60,000 miles.
Prev Volvo owner: when I replaced my XC60 2 yrs ago with a larger vehicle I almost bought RX350...glad I waited and when CX9 (Sig) came out got that instead. CX9 was very comparable to RX in terms of ride quality, features, reliability, fit & finish but just didn’t have the luxury badge the Lexus had. Of course practicality won over with 2 more seats and $10K less. Point being I cross shopped a premium brand with a mainstream brand...it does happen!
My Mazda CX-5 Signature has backup guidelines and a 360° all-around view. The one annoyance is that they are the optional views and you have to select them by hitting the option button on the touchscreen. The standard view is the rear end camera. I came from an four year old Acura RDX to this Mazda. The new RDX is very nice but it has the same problem now that the Lexus has - sticker bloat. I got the Mazda for $20K less than the Lexus and it is $15K less than the new RDX. Yet feature by feature, the Mazda is the equal to the other two cars. Interior aesthetics is a subjective experience. Personally, the busy nature of the Acura - so typical of Japanese brands in general - annoyed me to no end. The Lexus is the same. Mazda definitely went to the Bauhaus design school in keeping the cockpit clean and simple. I prefer it that way.

A Lexus fan here, and I am looking to update my sedan to an SUV this year. I droved both of them( NX 300 F sports package 2 & CX5 Singniture). I have to say the current NX 300 F-sport makes me feel so disappointed. What NX 300 offer is really outdated, and Cx5 is roomier, it feels faster and definitely feels better when you turn. Cx5 is the winner even though it is not Nx's direct competitor. I also drove 2019 RDX Elite, it is a much better choice if you are looking for a luxurious car compare to NX 300. I will wait until the end of this year, if 2020 NX still not provide a significant update I will go and get an RDX or a Cx5.
Jim xu I owned a Mazda a few years ago. They rust so easily. If you are looking for reliability, Lexus has down the #1 for reliability. No comparison. Mazda’s interior feels so cheap.

Worst review and comparison ever, you can see clear as day how bias that old dude is towards the lexus, he clearly came out with the intention to down play the Mazda and that gets a thumbs down from me
I didn't try nx300, but I tried CX5 and everything in that price range. Nothing comes even close, so I bought it last year. Couldn't be happier so far. If cars are that close yet the price is waaay different, how on earth can you recommend nx300?
Got my Mazda CX5 2021.5 as my first car as a gift from myself for my 26th birthday. BEST PURCHASE EVER. Both my parents always had Lexus cars and they both love my car and sometimes they will drive it and they love it. My dad says it’s better than a Lexus for that price point. He knew a guy at Lexus who wanted to give me a $2000 discount but I could only get the basic model. My Mazda has all the extra options I wanted so it’s even better. All my friends who get into my car are always surprised at how nice it is and didn’t know Mazda made such nice cars. Now my brother wants the same too … either CX5 or CX30
Clear winner in my book is the Mazda CX-5, who cares about driving refinements.Once you drive a Mazda everything else feels boring to drive. Mazda actually combines quality and fun together. I own a 2017 Mazda 3 GS model and previously owned a 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0T AWD. Having driven both Cadillac and Mazda. I can tell you Mazda drives much much better and definitely more fun. Mazda should be considered a luxury brand.
Here in Europe people are not delved into Japanese brands. But as prices of the new Mazda models are slowly rising and second hand models keeping up their value really well. This is now resulting in people getting confused and therefore checking the brand out! So since 2018 I see more and more Mazda’s on the road (especially the CX-5 and Mazda 3). It is funny that Mazda does not state that they are now focusing more on luxury.. but journalists and people are doing that for them!
Drove both (and RAV-4, Honda Passport, Acura RDX,) money was not relevant in my decisionand Mazda won easily. Better engine (way more torque than the NX300) , better cabin, better driving dynamics. My CX-5 does have rear view & 360 cameras, heated rear seats. The NX300 was not enjoyable to drive (slow, pokey, weak), the CX-5 was a blast.... I ended up buying two CX-5's one for me and one for the better half. I will be kind to you guys and simply state that your review was less than accurate ...
Sigor Ezz, the CX-5 has a 2.5L Turbo and MUCH more torque than the NX300, Look it up or test drive both as you clearly haven't done either. So, who's the idiot now?
You dodge a reliability bullet with the RDX. The Buick Envision 2.0T is putting down a faster 27.5s figure-8 time vs 2019 CX-5 2.5T and 2019 RDX 2.0T at 27.7 in Motor Trend testing. That continues in an Emergency Lane test by Consumer Reports that has the Envision 2.0T doing 55.5 mph while the CX-5(non-turbo) did 54 mph and the RDX 2.0T can only go 52.5 mph. For 2019 Envision 2.0T gets a new 9-speed and 295 lb-ft of torque, 316 lb-ft of torque on overboost. The twin clutch and torque vectoring AWD is something that Mazda cannot match only able to use brakes on a single on a wheel for torque vectoring. The Hiperstrut, as also seen on Honda Civic Type-R as dual axis strut, eliminates any torque steer under accleration. At a discounted $35K the Envision Prem ll offers heads up display, adaptive high beams and articulating HID, adaptive cruise control with full stopping, tri-zone climate control, sliding rear seat, 12-volt outlet, along with Buick's longer warranty than Mazda.
@@anonymous00117 They probably do have a job...shilling for Buick. Or at least I hope so, because if they're regurgitating this much Buick propaganda on every other car review on UA-cam then the joke's on them. If they keep up the spambot copy-pasta comments it'll have the opposite effect of what was intended for Buick.
It’s not cheaper. It’s $10-$15,000 more!!! Total morons. No one would buy a Lexus NX300. There are at least 20 SUVs better than it. And a Mazda at the much cheaper price is a much better buy. If you want luxury go with the Audi Q5. Lexus IS just terrible like most Toyota models just trying to overcharge and trade off their name.
@@rogerc23 i dont think he said the lexus is cheaper. He said even if it was cheaper. And audi is more luxurious but dependability and resale value compare to lexus👇
Go ahead the Lexus will last wayyyyy longer not to mention that rust will eat up that mazda but then again your probably the type of person to drive a complete rust bucket
I used to work at Lexus and drove these every day and didn't like it the cx5 works just as good and the interior doesn't look cheesy like the Lexus. ugly grills
Hey, the CX5 looks much much much better than the NX300. That alone will convince some Lexus NX300 buyer to switch over to CX5. In a couple of years the spindle grill will become an eye sore for sure.
Just wasted 6 mins of my time watching Lexus fan boys.. Hahaha..I was hoping an unbiased comparison.. They were comparing mazda cx 5 from lexus without riding the vehicle first..
Seen both of these physically put together in Fukuoka and Hiroshima. But the result is odd. The CX-5 platform is significantly newer and has a lot more effort put into weight reduction and stiffness (this chassis broke a tensile steel record which it still holds). The NX-300 is built on an ancient RAV4 shared platform (that has thankfully now been replaced). Lexus is about attention on materials but not details. Ergonomics are a lot less fussy and actually a lot went into placement. Kudos to Mazda for packing so much into a more affordable package. It’s the drivers pick and the value pick. Lexus is the badge pick.
I just happen to have both vehicles priced under $40k. They are both fine vehicles with the Lexus feeling more luxurious and with a better infotainment system. Mazda is a very close second choice with great handling, lots of features and fun to drive characteristics. Happy with both!
Did you guys do your jobs?! You mentioned that the Lexus has a 360 overhead view like the cx5 doesn’t, it does. You mentioned that the cx5 doesn’t have rear heated seats, it does. Damn it guys, do your jobs before comparing these vehicles. Your spreading misinformation!
Here in Europe people are not delved into Japanese brands. Terrible review. This video screams of bias. The material quality in the Lexus NX is actually quite bad compared to the Mazda. The Lexus does not handle as well, does not have apple CarPlay, engine is weaker, radar cruise is not as good, not as roomy, not intuitive to use and they still chose it over the Mazda? These guys should be ashamed of themselves for reviewing cars.

These guys bailed on the Mazda as soon as the video started. There’s a huge price difference. At least try to be open minded and not have a pre determined opinion,
I never read anything bad about Mazda. Everyone who has one loves it. They are definitely a very interesting bridge category. Between Toyota/Honda/Nissan and Lexus/Acura/Infiniti, but closer to the latter trio.
Crazy I own Mazda 3 2020 Gt and cx5 but I would take the cx5 because I own one quality wise are identical Japanese 100% but the Mazda CX-5 it’s more fun to drive and more comfort and its luxury enough inside outside body definitely the cx5 is the winner I love the Lexus my sister owns one f spot pkg but trust me guys the Mazda is way more comfy to drive and fun to drive and it’s nicer body I am a Mazda loyalty customer jut for future records Mazda quality as good as Lexus trust me I drove Mazda and maintaining it is low just oil change and go Thanks
Having sat in both and considered both to purchase.... this was a biased review.... if you can call it a review. I chose to go with the lower priced CX-5 Signature. I felt both performance and comfort were a step up from the Lexus and at a lower price. That Mazda is noticeably more roomy in the cab, which I did not expect. One thing not mentioned was the headlights at night. I absolutely LOVE the Mazda’s lighting. It’s perfect for night driving.... very bright and perfect colour range!
Had 2015 Mazda cx5 and now have 2017 lexus nx. I prefer the mazda cx5 even the 2015 version. Mazda blows Lexus away with handling and overall driving engagement. Lexus is just vanilla. Soft suspension and It feels claustrophobic. Once my lease is up I am going back to mazda cx5.
The NX300 would win it for me as a true luxury car, the Mazda CX-5 is great for those wanting something that's better than it's mainstream competitors like the CR-V & Rav4.
If you don't have a need for speed....test drive a 2020 Santa Fe SEL model with the 2.4 engine. A real bargain in todays market, roomy, X-lent ride & handling with all the safety features of more $$$$$ SUVs. It can be purchased for $26k...Another big plus is it's overall styling and long warranty over other brands. Also has a 8spd non cvt

3 minutes into this video and all I can say is lol.... this review.... First of all for the price, the Mazda blows the Lexus out of the water in almost every aspect. Build quality and reliability aside, as these can be subjective topics. And lastly the PRICE differential! No one is cross shopping vehicles in this category that have a 10k price difference! Mazda hands down here. Little take away for Driving.ca, It’s not always about the badge gents. You didn’t provide one solid reason why the Lexus would be your pick other than “it held its own”. The Lexus didn’t show up to this fight to “hold its own”, it was supposed to dominate. But it didn’t and the proof is in the pudding. I feel bad for Mazda, such an underrated product.
The problem is the material quality of the lexus way better. Even the weight of the doors and the way they close are not comparable because the mazda is cheaper build. Its like comparing a vw tiguan with a audi q5 and saying that because the tiguan has more features for way less the price it should be better, but it does not work like that way. The lexus is better isolated less roadsound and silent and give you the premium feeling that mazda will not be able to give. If u want to compare it, the mazda should be compared to the toyota rav4 not the lexus.
The interior of the CX5 needs an update. The new Mazda3 and CX30 have nicer and more modern interiors. Otherwise, it’s a great value priced below a NX or RDX.

I prefer the old CX-5 infotainment over the new 3 and CX-30 infotainment tho. Instead of a nice QWERTY keyboard in the CX-5 you know have to circle all the way around to the letter you want which makes it unbelievably slow.
Great review! Thanks guys. In terms of overall value, there is no question the CX 5 wins that outright. It has comparable power, superior driving dynamics, more room and similar fit and finish. Yes, the Lexus has a few extra luxury features but when you factor in the cost it isn't close. If you cover up that Mazda logo, you have certainly got a premium small SUV.
Ewen MacDonald The thing is, here in the United States, the Lexus NX F-Sport model actually comes with less amenities than the signature version of the Mazda CX-5. In the US, the NXF sport models do not come with rain sensing wipers and any of the features you can get on the luxury package on the regular NX. Also, the gentlemen in this video were incorrect, the signature Mazda CX-5 does have heated rear seats, and it has HUD. These are things that the substantially more expensive NX does not have available in it, and believe me, I am a Lexus fan. I’ve been driving an RX for nine years. No one can deny the value that Mazda has put in the CX-5
Eleanor Massaro thank you , I let my Lexus driving friends drive my new Signature and one did dump theirs for a new Signature . They thought it handled better, rode better and had nicer touches than their Lexus. The others don’t drive cars, the ride to the country club and look at labels.
However, when you compare the prices, the Canadian model is 8000 CAD cheaper for the missing parking sensors and surround cameras. I'd pick the better value.
I would take NX over Mazda anytime. But the dilemma occurs when compare between the basic NX300 vs Mazda CX-5 Signature. That is because the price point is very close
These guys gotta understand how the game works. both cars get positive final opinion from different reviewers that way both cars win. Also gotta get those facts tight
This Lexus has a CVT. That immediately knocks it down for me. Granted, someone that will pay 60 G for a vehicle probably doesn't care if the transmission will fail at 60,000 miles, but for some others, it does. I'll take the Mazda.
Au Contraire, my 2019 CX-5 GT Reserve has heated front AND rear seats and cooled front seats, like the Signature. And the CX-5 has the best body design, by far. Plus the CX-5 has EQUAL the LEXUS reliability which is amazing. Lots for the money with the CX-5 Signature.
Lexus IS Toyotas Luxury brand..their is still Lexus on road from the early 90’s late 80’s..Mazdas reliability have onjj looks been credited in the last 5-6 years so that’s to soon to really be making the claim of equal reliability..plus Mazda value plummet in 1-2 years Lexus hold value far better
I was really disappointed to see Lexus won. I never saw that coming. Lexus NX is literally a RAV4 but a different badge. There is no way Lexus could come close. Gosh such a misleading and biased review. In Australia, CX5 is the best compact SUV whilst Mazda3 is the best compact sedan. I’m sure this is not coincidental win for Mazda.
Another idiot comment saying Lexus is a Toyota with a different badge! You probably have never driven a Lexus. Try driving both! It’s night and day. I know this because I have both of them!!! Lmao
Please be sure to add $8000 on top of NX's base model price when doing the comparison. Otherwise, you won't even get basic features like a parking sensor on the NX. They wrap essential features inside expensive packages and that's how they make money.
I'm a Mazda fan but among Lexus SUVs the NX model is the one I love. If it is the same in price and specs, I would definitely choose the NX, if not Mazda is the big winner here because I like all Mazda design and driving dynamics.👍 👍 🏎 🏎
I have never liked the styling of the Lexus - sort of looks like what Zoro would come up with if you gave him the design keys. For me, Mazda knocked it out of the park on exterior design. I also prefer the Mazda interior. Lexus, whacks an analogue clock in there with a trackpad that everyone hates and says "Look, it's premium!". There is do denying they are both good cars but with Lexus you are buying a badge......and to be fair, that matters to a lot of people.
I realize this is just their opinions but they sound like a couple of badge snobs.. To them Lexus= premium so the nx is better. They didn't even really research the Mazda.. No heated rear seats? Did they even look around? I drove both and liked both but the mazda in my opinion drove better. Mazdas offering more for your money. If you go with a Grand touring reserve you get the new turbo for a few thousand less. Not sure which one I'll end up with.. New Mazda or a 2-3 year old lexus nx.. Kinda like the lexus aggressive looks but the mazdas classy look is nice too.
I'm currently 564lbs and the Mazda accommodates my massive girth reasonably well. If my size continues to increase to beyond 600lbs I will need to consider other forms of transport.
You guys said the CX-5 didn’t have heated rear seats, if you’d have bothered to pull down the center arm rest you would’ve found the rear heated seat buttons along with two USB ports.
This CX5 sig would be a clear winner here... 20K dollars of difference and savings would get me 2019 Mazda 3 😁 at nice 4K discount local dealers now offer as 2020 have rolled out....
It's a marketing mindset thing... if you care less about a "luxury name" the Mazda CX5 wins hands down for the money... maybe even win overall if a driver doesn't know which brand he's driving...
Disappointing "comparison." I thought I'd see a real review of two cars I'm actually considering. All I got was faux argumentative banter and subjective opinions. At last blush, this wasn't a comparison, and I'm not subscribing.
Jerkier action, reliability score is about 7x lower on the interior parts/ electronics although the engine is on par, and even though it has all that power the Lexus is not a turbo therefore winning on many fronts, turbos also need rebuilds quite often and power is not always available unlike lexus, to me that is not luxury. Lastly obviously the lexus is much quieter inside, the interior mazda design is nice looking but materials are cheap, so piano gloss black really just means cheap breakable/dirtiable material that looks cool. Lastly things like the Lexus ease of use from Trunk being automatic and non automatic if you want. Also lexus has a big steering wheel and insanely soft suspension which means comfort as opposed to Mazdas sport suspension.
You guys are delusional and horrific reviewers. The Mazda blows the nx away in ever category. I have the RX and I rather drive my wife's 18 cx5 and that lacks the turbo. It's all leather where the nx is plastic bullshit for 50k. The Mazda drives way better. It's more fun and sporty. It's better then my Rx and way better than the nx. I drive the nx when I get a loaner and it's overpriced crap.
No one should listen to you when even average car enthusiast knows that Mazda has rear heated seats, 360 degree view and so on? At least learn something about cars and than post a video. Mazda has much better handling, steering and engine...
Our CX-5 Akera which is the Signature model in your market most definitely has heated seats at the back, 360 overhead camera with trajectory guides for front and back as well. Bit more research needed before slamming the "underdog" wouldn't you say? Oh and that Lexus console although is a bigger screen is hideous.
Test drove the 2021 Lexus Nx F-sport and was disappointed, very sluggish to say the least../ test drove the cx-5 Turbo Grand touring signature felt more solid than the lexus, drove better and the rims are nicer.
Went to the Lexus showroom and sat in the NX. I would be ashamed to put my guests in the second row of the NX because their knees would be hitting the rear air con ducts and this is called luxurious? The CX-5 cheated a little by shortening the rear middle seat but at least the rear aisle was still wider, not luxurious but tolerable
Further, to state that the torque in the Lexus is better than the Mazda is laughable. The 50ftlbs+ of torque difference in Mazda's favor is undeniable.
Where is the Android Auto and Apple Car Play , Lexus? The NX is a little dated. I drove the Lexus and compared to what Lexus use to build this NX and RX are lacking.
I think all the Japanese products are the best in the world not just cars. That's because Japanese people have morals and dignity not like European or American companies

Luxury brand? that's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever read.
@@mutaal5770Kindly keep your unwanted comments to yourself.
Same way Acura, Lexus, Audi are luxury brands. Its about time Mazda gets that class also.
@@Alboravin Buick Envision is No. 1 in segment according to Consumer Reports.
Even if NX is cheaper, I'd still get the CX 5.

I agree. CX5 is awesome.
Don’t agree. Quality of the video info not the best. You need to do your homework. CX5 Signature has heated seats. :(.
I used to work at Lexus and drove these every day and didn't like it the cx5 works just as good and the interior doesn't look cheesy like the Lexus. ugly grills
Ain't Lexus/toyota engines will out last that mazda engine?
Hey, the CX5 looks much much much better than the NX300. That alone will convince some Lexus NX300 buyer to switch over to CX5. In a couple of years the spindle grill will become an eye sore for sure.
I disagree
Just wasted 6 mins of my time watching Lexus fan boys.. Hahaha..I was hoping an unbiased comparison.. They were comparing mazda cx 5 from lexus without riding the vehicle first..
You're totally wrong about the Mazda , this car car is an overall winner !
Its not an overall winner its an absolute winner
I test drove a Mazda CX 5 Signature and they definitely do have rear heated seats and 360 birds eye view camera...
I own a CX 5 signature and the reseats are heated.
But as prices of the new Mazda models are slowly rising and second hand models keeping up their value really well (I sold our CX-3 after 1 year with a €2000,- loss to get a CX-5 GT-M 4WD).
This is now resulting in people getting confused and therefore checking the brand out! So since 2018 I see more and more Mazda’s on the road (especially the CX-5 and Mazda 3).
It is funny that Mazda does not state that they are now focusing more on luxury.. but journalists and people are doing that for them here.
The Lexus spindle front grille has gotten old. Never was a fan from the beginning actually.

I like the CX 5 more than the Lexus in and out .
I never read anything bad about Mazda. Everyone who has one loves it. They are definitely a very interesting bridge category. Between Toyota/Honda/Nissan and Lexus/Acura/Infiniti, but closer to the latter trio.
Mazda is better! Hands down. Can't wait for it to get the new interior. ❤❤❤❤💯

My Mazda CX-5 GT has heated seats in the back,??
U.S. spec CX-5 Signature has heated rear seats and 360 camera...thought the Canadian spec version had heated rear seats as well.
Yes, my Canadian model has heated rear seats but no 360 camera and parking sensors for an equivalent of 31000 usd. That's around 8 to 9 K usd cheaper.
How can you compare a Mazda and Lexus?

@@fikofikret1522 Knobs in the NX feel cheap and plasticky.

U..S. Spec CX-5 signature has parking sensors and 360 camera. Canadians get shafted.
Why comparing a luxury vehicle to a regular vehicle.....they forgot to mention the price difference.
I'll take the Mazda.
reconeix No it’s a six speed transmission lol
In 2022 Premium gas is at 5.59 per gallon, so if a turbo requires premium, you must keep this in mind. Regular gas is about $1 less per gallon.

You can't compare expense Toyota WITH Mazda..MAZD #1
I'm a Mazda fan but among Lexus SUVs the NX model is the one I love. If it is the same in price and specs, I would definitely choose the NX, if not Mazda is the big winner here because I like all Mazda design and driving dynamics.👍 👍 🏎 🏎
The new Mazda 3 desperately needs that engine!
Mazda wins
Cx5 is so amazing.
The Mazda CX-5 has heated rear seats
Only category that Lexus does better for me personally is hybrid options. I love my CX5 but damn I wish Mazda had a hybrid version of it.
I feel that you were not impartial to the Mazda right away. Also the Mazda does have heated rear seats.
Just wait til mazda makes the in-line 6 who in turn will be used by Lexus
5:40 I wonder what the 'flaws in the refinement' are?
60 GRAND? Plus tax tags. NOPE!
Here in Singapore NX300 is price S$100k or USD75k above CX5. Anyone in the US will pay this delta for the NX?
Lexus NX 300 f sport ...FTW!!!
And mazda signature does have 360 degree cameras....
And the cx5 interior isn't crazy busy and ugly like the lexus
No Android Auto or Apple Car Play on the Lexus is a real miss! In 2020, you HAVE to have these things!
Test drove the 2021 Lexus Nx F-sport and was disappointed, very sluggish to say the least../ test drove the cx-5 Turbo Grand touring signature felt more solid than the lexus, drove better and the rims are nicer.
luxury car vs sports car comparison lol/
I don’t understand the remark about the Mazda interior feeling like it was added on.
Lexus anyday
Nice bias in how you overlayed the spec sheets for the cars opposite each other too. You put the Mazda spec sheet over top the Lexus and vice versa.
Further, to state that the torque in the Lexus is better than the Mazda is laughable. The 50ftlbs+ of torque difference in Mazda's favor is undeniable.
Very annoying, very biased. Your opinions were made up 2 days before this video was filmed.
The two don't compare, the NX is more luxurious, but it didn't help having not cleaned the Mazda before having the two compete.
Where is the Android Auto and Apple Car Play , Lexus? The NX is a little dated. I drove the Lexus and compared to what Lexus use to build this NX and RX are lacking.
no Android Auto or Apple Car Play ? .... Practicality eats Luxury every single day !!!!
Lexus looks like a huge Prius and Mazda is more quiet than.
