    #Mazda invited us out to Whistler, BC as a paid influencer to drive their entire 2019 CX-Line. However, all views and opinions expressed in this video are solely our own. Vehicles were driven on snow covered roads using Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires.
    After taking the sales crown away from the Mazda3 a few years ago, the 2nd generation Mazda #CX5 quickly became an instant hit with consumers back in 2017. With crossovers continuing to be a hot seller here in America, Mazda has made some significant changes to the CX-5 for 2019. The biggest change comes from under the hood, with the addition of the same #SkyActiv #Turbo 2.5L 4-cyl with up to 250 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque, the 2019 model goes from one of the slowest vehicles in the segment to one of the quickest, with an interior that is very capable of shamming a lot of pricey luxury SUV options.

    Hey guys! Just wanted to clarify, the CX-5 in the video is a Canadian spec and a 360 degree camera is unavailable in Canada, but the US Signature trim will get that feature. Hope you all enjoyed the snowy backdrop, just in time for the holiday season. Special thanks to Mazda for sending out to test this car and the rest of the CX-Line for 2019. Happy Holidays!

You're getting a lot of bang for your buck here: turbo engine AWD with up to 250 HP, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, power folding mirrors, quiet cabin, Apple Car Play...all for around $35K? Mazda is really underrated. I didn’t care for them for the longest time because I thought they were “cheap” or not as good as the rest until I recently sat in 2018 models at the mall and now renting a 2018 Mazda 3. I can say that this Mazda 3 is hands down better than the Honda Civic my mom just got. I know Honda is “known” as one of the most reliable and best value cars but now I don’t think so. We are not impressed with the Civic and should have gave Mazda consideration because I’m pretty sure she would have drove home with a Mazda.

      I've been in the 2019 Honda and the Mazda - and i disagree. They are both stunning and have great interior quality (the Mazda even more so), but the Mazda is simply too tight inside and not as fun. Adding onto that the much larger displacement which is heavily taxed in my country, the Honda is a clearly better car. The prices for the Honda Elegance 1.0 and the Mazda 3 Plus 2.0 are the exact same, too.

A lot of people have really bought into the worship of Toyota and Honda as the be-all-end-all of reliability. Looked in detail at the Honda and Toyota offerings including the brand new RAV-4 and CR-V. Researched all options extensively. Went to check out a 2016 (CPO) CX-5 Grand Touring and was very impressed with the drive, fit, finish (drove 4 others, too - all drove the same) and pricing relative to the competition. I was sold the 2016 CX-5. Then I took the 2019 CX-5 GTR with the 2.5 turbo out for a ride. Walked out of the dealership with 2016 and 2019 Signature! Hands-down the best in the class, and there aren’t a million of them on the road! Taking delivery in 3 days! Also, I didn’t want to wait for the RAV-4 Hybrid, which I will bet will not perform as well as the CX-5 Signature. Deal done.

      The quality of Mazda is NOT ok either. I bought a brand new 2017 CX5 and at 2000 miles and 8 months into ownership - the brakes/rotors started to corrode - Mazda claims this is from the cold weather and brakes are not covered under warranty. At under 6000 miles and 15 months into ownership all 4 brakes and rotors need to be replaced ($1200 with diagnosis charge). Mazda corporate essentially told me too bad when I complained - apparently Mazdas can't get wet or be driven in the snow otherwise it's your fault. This car is GARAGE kept and driven several times a week. Never had similar issues with other cars in my family (hondas, lexus, a toyota and vw). My jetta has 70k miles, kept outside all the time - still has original brakes. I will never buy a Mazda again. The premium look is paper thin - the car already has shakes and rattles in the cabin at a year old. Several trim pieces aren't hold up too well either.

    There is still one HUGE PROBLEM with this vehicle and its SPACE. The second row hardly has any at all and the boot space is downright terrible for a compact suv.
    I waited and waited for a powerful reliable variant in this segment but then Subaru just dropped a powerful engine and the previous gen is a loud car. This is perfect except this isn’t a compact car. It’s sub compact suv. The rear space is very small. It isn’t going to be comfortable for long drive for adults. I settled with Santa Fe sport 2.0t which is kind of a mid size but at a compact price. Powerful and spacious with loads of goodies like car play 360 cam moon roof adaptive cruise emergency braking. Few of these features aren’t still in the Cx5.
    What they really need to do now is simply work on a refresh and increase the rear space to match the compact space. Until they do it , it’s not going to be hot cakes. Welcome the powerful engine change though and luxurious interior but when buyers with family look at the rear space in comparison to other vehicles in segment they simply won’t get this. Even the one which are all praise this isn’t practical when they actually look inside in person. Sophian is actually being very subjective but is not objective of the typical buyers in this segment, to the point of being downright insensitive

Great ride, great handling, and a beautiful interior. We were in need of the bells and whistles, but did add AWD. The dealer Koepell Madza, was great. Threw in the I-Sense Package as a bonus. Just rented an AWD for a road trip. Love the car. things to improve: more cargo space. It was one of the biggest limitations I had with the car. Had a full car for a Tahoe trip and the storage got limited really fast.
    Add maybe 2 more inches of leg room in the rear
    the volume knob near the center arm rest is quite tucked in for people with longer arms and is kind of hard to adjust. I feel like Salt bae when trying to adjust it.
    The rear backup camera quality is terrible. It's like 240p
    Move the rear charging ports and heated seats from the rear arm rest to the center console knee area. Cannot be accessed when 3 passengers in back.
    Put the blind spot orange lights on the inside of the cabin rather than on the mirrors.
    Change the keyless entry from the button on the door handle to unlocking by placing the hand behind the handle
    Redesign the key fob (it looks like Nissan's which isn't a good thing) and consider adding remote start.
    Offer a button to turn off infotainment screen to reduce eye strain at night.
    Lastly, ADD A BIGGER GAS TANK!! I get like 320 mile range which is not good. My Accord gets like 480. And the notification for low fuel turns on with only like 25 miles left which is really low.
    That said, awesome mpg even with AWD. Averaged like 29mpg while driving 80mph
    Sufficient power with the 186hp. Nothing mind-blowing but gets the job done.
    Really sleek vehicle
    Love the seatbelt notification of the backseats
    Driving Dynamics are nice for a CUV

How unbiased can one be when they are getting paid and if they give a bad review they know they won't be invited back for any future reviews. There are various reasons why Mazda sticks with a 6-speed:
    1. Mazda's engines are designed so that they don't need a lot of gears to get good economy. Competitors that use thirsty turbos desperately need the engine to stay at very low revs to get good economy, but Mazda's NA engines (and their specially designed 'low power' 2.5 turbo) are able to operate efficiently at relatively higher revs. This characteristic is being significantly improved with the SkyActiv-X engine, so Mazda cars will have significantly better economy when driven hard vs competitors while at the same time using shorter gearing for higher acceleration.
    2. Their engines are also designed not to need a lot of gears to get good performance. They try to give their engines a wide power band (not to be confused with torque), so that even with only six gears you can stay close to peak power when redlining and shifting.
    3. Mazda prefers the driver to experience revs building as they think it is more satisfying to drive. With more gears the transmission is constantly shifting giving a potentially vague rev characteristic. It's for this same reason Mazda has avoided CVTs (and I imagine they find the engineering of fake shift points to be distasteful).
    4. It's cheaper for sure, but that does free up money to spend elsewhere.
    5. It might be lighter, but I'm not 100% on that.

    • @KehY91
      @KehY91 5 років тому +4

      Well stated. Don't own a Mazda but this is why I like them. Unlike other car manufacturers in its class, they prioritize "driving matters" to their cars that are sporty and fun to drive. As an enthusiast, it's very appreciative these days.

    • @_chipchip
      @_chipchip 5 років тому +1

      I feel like you’re pulling those reasons out of your arse. Plenty of manufacturers stick with regular autos over cut due to their better driving characteristics. Cvts are really only there for economy (and are probably cheaper to make). Mazda know how to make cars that are interesting and that’s one of the reasons people who actually like driving prefer them to Toyota etc.

    • @BruceLeedar
      @BruceLeedar 5 років тому +7

      @@_chipchip The first three points I heard directly from interviews with Mazda engineer/rep Dave Coleman.
      Mazda is definitely an outlier among Japanese manufacturers in regards to using traditional automatic over CVT. They're also probably the only volume manufacturer to boast that they are working to improve the ICE rather than develop EV tech in the coming decade.

    Great video, as always! You're one of the most informative car reviewers out there - worldwide!
    (One tiny gripe, if I may: a grammatical mistake that's spreading like wildfire and, as a linguist, makes my hair stand on end: It should be "means nothing to you and ME", not "to you and I", we can't say "to I". e.g. John and I are showing the car to you and me.)

    I rented a 2018 cx5 sport or touring on a 6 hour trip going up to Eureka Ca. It was very comfortable and amazing on the mountain road and ate up curves like nothing I was pushing it to the limits around every turn and felt really confident for fun I even chase a 370Z ( 60-80 mph) in curves and up hill. My only complaint was small gas tank and lack of power. But than again I think it's because I was flooring it most of the time lol. MAZDA nailed it with this 2019 CX5, Turbo and AWD and one of the best interior 👏👏👍

    Nice to see Mazda making necessary improvements. Ventilated seats is something they needed and same with car play/ android auto. The new turbo engine is a nice addition too. These vehicles no longer leave much of anything on the table.

      Nope. Just test drove a reserve turbo. The dealer says that Mazda is comparing the reserve and reserve signature to Acura, Audi and BMW. No way. But the CX5 turbo indeed is a very good car.

    Another great review. So Mazda has set up a interesting challenge to the Luxury SUV market, and the one I have immediately in mind is the new Acura RDX. I haven't seen anyone do a comparison yet, but just a suggestion for an interesting video, head to head the Mazda CX-5 (most premium of the mainstream SUVs) vs Acura RDX (Value leader of the Luxury Market). How much does that extra money get you?
