I always assume my job is going away tomorrow. That's why I lived as frugally as possible and saved up $120k cash. That way I can survive for at least 3 years without a job on just my savings without moving back in with my parents. I still rent a room for $1k a month all expenses included because not having a mortgage means I can move wherever I need to, whenever I need to, and I don't have to worry about owing some bank 100s of thousands of dollars while I'm unemployed.

You've got it down. I took a less sexy job out of college (working for a state agency). I saved for years - put everything in a low cost total stock market fund. Now I'm on the path to early retirement and any job I hate I can leave thanks to having moved to a market where skills like mine are in high demand.

this video is very accurate and I've seen it play out for 30 years now. Very sad. The best option for most that I can think of, is either an actual shop selling and diversifying in something, or more than one professional expertises and have more than one remote contracts. And I mean professional as in valued educated expertise. Maybe use one for the stable job with the pension and insurance and the other to supplement the income you lose annually because your wages don't increase as fast as inflation. BTW other economies think this is the American system and they are so better off but in reality this is coming for them too, they are just behind in the financial development. It's the shrinking of the middle class causing it, IMHO

The CEO of my company promised there would be no layoffs at an all hands meeting. 3 months later, there were layoffs. After the layoffs the VP of our division held a debrief to discuss the aftermath. When asked why there was a layoff when the CEO promised there wouldn’t be one, he said “if someone promises you there won’t be layoffs, don’t believe them.” And he’s right of course. I was just surprised to hear him say it out loud. There will always be layoffs.

A Swedish man (I think) claimed that he was a high school teacher and a socialist. He told me that he objected to mandatory accounting in schools on the grounds that "the math would make capitalism seem logical to the students."
A Libertarian (male I presume) said that he objected on the grounds that "nothing should be mandatory."
I have been suggesting this for some time and fail to comprehend any serious objections. In fact another Internet Entity who claimed to be an accountant said he did not mind so long as it was not done until after he retired in 6 years.(I'm not sure how long ago this was. More than 3 years)
If you search Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, which is free on the Internet, for "read, write" you will find every instance is followed by "and account". Smith used the word 'education' Eighty Times but consumers did not buy air conditioners and microwave ovens before 1790. Those things wear out and Smith did not say much about depreciation.
Karl Marx used the word 'depreciation' 35 times in the first two volumes of his major work. Marx knew about railroads while Smith did not, but there were still no microwave ovens.
The concept of GNP/GDP was developed in the late 1930s. For some reason Marx did not get the memo. A derived concept which gets little mention is NNP/NDP where Net replaces Gross. Just subtract Depreciation from Gross.
Of course there is a hitch. That Depreciation only applies to Capital Goods, like industrial robots and 18-wheel trucks. The air conditioners and microwave ovens purchased by consumers have their depreciation ignored. The economists do not point out these details. How do you suppose planned obsolescence factors into that?
When television began its wonderful job of brainwashing Baby Boomers there were only 2.5 billion people on the planet. The spaceship is more crowded now.
Do you suppose mandatory accounting/finance might be a good idea? All over the world?

26 year old here, by the moment you are my age you will hate working. If you don`t want to slave your entire life away, make a business and put in the effort, do not listen to your peers who want you to go party and drink, those people are doomed, you do not want to be with them, trust me. In 10 years they will all be walking zombies working dead end jobs.

Sage advice. I have spent four years building up a side gig and its about to become profitable. I am working two jobs and I feel like I am on a hamster wheel. I hope that I am able to quit one of my jobs and work on my side gig. That side gig, if it works the way I want it to, will create multiple passive income streams. I have learned the hard way how a replaceable a hard working driven employee can be. All companies seem to care about is making sure those at the top can afford another yacht at the expense of the people doing the real work.

Honestly seeing the scale and severity of the problem I think that it might be time for legislation to step in to prevent people from getting to the brink financially. the gigification of the economy and profit hoarding are ultimately the cause of the worker's hardships and will continue to be. Of course people will work to adapt to the times to keep food on the table and these tips are very helpful for that! But as more "inflation" prices are being proven to be "greedflation" prices, I can't help but think that fewer and fewer people will be able to keep up. System solution needed in addition to individual grit

I'll be honest, moving temporarily and potentially fully to another country for currency arbitration is not a bad move at all provided you can work remotely. Also speaking of working remotely, that being the true way out if you ever want to reclaim your time back. Certifications help to get you back to making much more potentially but it's more important to stay abreast to what you can do immediately with what you already know to make more specifically with the goal of investing into passive income. As you get older it's really really important to remember to look for those tiny hinges that open really big doors as you ain't getting younger for damn sure.

That's what I try to tell people when they question how I can afford to travel after a layoff. 😀 Almost everywhere is LCOL compared to NYC, so subletting my place and moving my daily expenses to somewhere cheaper actually works out better in the long run (and the longer you stay, the quicker you pay off the initial flight which is really the only big investment)
And +1 for remote work! Makes it much easier to leverage hours for $$ when you're not chained to a certain amount of time in an office.

H&R Block in 2024 - you will most likely be sent to their corporate in India and someone there will do your taxes and you sign disclaimers you're ok sharing your private numbers with their office there. I'm 35 with what seems to be undiagnosed inattentive type ADHD; 100's of browser tabs open, can't be consistent with anything, never following through with my plans. Early on I think I had the deck somewhat stacked against me, volatility early childhood, bad schools, people with low to no education and carrying generational trauma, and a lot of neglect. Didn't think it was outside the norm till my mid to late 20's, when I started noticing I've atrophied, lagged behind in terms of starting a family, maintaining long and fruitful relationships. There's a lot of guilt and shame everyday that people will find out I'm a recluse and slowly seem to be getting worse even with what seems like consistent therapy and workout routine, perhaps they are distractions. But I'm feeling really lost, and burnt out of the 9-5 and worried that because of my consistent brain fog and lack of motivation and top of that severe social anxiety that I might find myself in a worse place. I'm not really capable of asking for help because of the shame and anxiety.

Thank you for this video! I plan to continue adding on new skills yearly. Meanwhile, I began taking on contract work last year which really kept me afloat. I am able to get in, work on a project, and get out. Yet I notice that it allows me to increase my skills as well as opens me up to increased pay vs waiting for annual raises with a salaried position. I worked a salary role for 7 years and those annual raises did not beat the cost of inflation. So I plan to continue contract work, work multiple contracts at a time if feasible, and save whatever money I can!

In a pure capitalist system, the free market would control production, distribution, and pricing with little government involvement. However, in reality, no country operates under a purely capitalist system. Modern economies blend elements of capitalism and government regulation, creating a "mixed economy" that leans more towards socialism than capitalism.

The funny thing about the masses (i.e. "most people") is that the average joe will definitely agree with most ideas expressed in this video. BUT, at the same time, the average joe will also vote for policies that bring further instability to the job market namely open borders and out of control migration policy. With an out-of-control supply for entry level jobs -- and now, even mid tier ones -- wages are bound to go lower and lower, and competition for employment rises to insane levels. Not to mention the ever more insecure and unpredictable urban life, with people from all over the world and with all manners of temperaments and value systems tightly packed together in an urban concentration camp

Not knocking everything that got us to our current point but time to think ourside the box and look for new solutions to a changing world and leave capitalism behind us.
