In July 2023 we moved to Bangkok, Thailand. But 8/9 months later, we are packing up our apartment and we are leaving. It didn't work out for us here and this is why...
We want to explain why we are leaving Bangkok, what we like and don't about life here, and what's next for us after giving up our flat and leaving Thailand.
We also want to share what we have learned over this period of time, what mistakes we made and why they will only help us grow as individuals and a couple in the long term.

Julia - I can't handle heat and humidity. I don't have a proper thermostat in my body. We retired to northern New England while many elderly want the heat of southern states. We all make mistakes my friends but I don't think you did in this case. You made a decision to try Thailand and then you learned over that four month period that you had found a better solution, one that addressed a number of issues that had risen to the top of your priority list. That's not a mistake. I call it mindfulness. Adaptability. Future proofing your channel, your business. And then you even found someone to take the flat. I declare you both an all around success!!! Suzi
Yes! I can’t stand the heat. I’m in New York and I hate the North East’s humidity during the summer.
I also hate the heat. We live just south of San Francisco and we get uncomfortable with anything over 72 degrees! I call my mother up in South Carolina and tell her we had a scorcher of a day, etc how awful it was at 75 and she tells me it was 96! I feel so foolish! I also am panicking because one day we will have to leave this area when we retire (can’t afford to retire here) and I have no idea where to go! We’ve been looking at other Mediterranean climates but it is just so damn perfect here…..
Agreed! I’m in NJ and dread the heat and humidity! I actually love cold weather and snow.
the NE humidity in summer is from july through August. NyC is hot becuse of all the concretw and structures. But nothing like the tropics or amazon. Go to Panama city, Panama, Cartagena or Krabi, Bali and then come back and the NE humidity for all of 4-6 weeks.@trcolavi
Well said and I agree!
I'm a fan of colder weather too. I can tolerate heat if it's dry, like the SW USA, but humidity is the worst.
Born raised in the Midwest. I have family from Texas Gulf to Minnesota. And Minnesota I like best
You guys haven't failed. You're evolving. Many people spend their lives in denial of what makes them truly happy. It takes courage to look yourself in the eye (metaphorically) and say "is this what I want?" Good on you guys. Hope you're feeling better about the move.
With Julia in climate 💯. It's your life! Why apologize for any of it? Live and learn.
I imagine his wife or girlfriend said "enough". I stuck with Indonesia for a year but at least it rained properly. Every country has positive and negatives. I sent this link to my wife. Maybe she'll learn a thing or two.
I've had heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat illness and they all suck. You're being smart to listen to your body.
I like your message in this video. You guys are the most real and down to earth UA-camrs. It’s okay to try and fail and learn from it. Thank you guys for being honest with us. Much respect 🫡

I just feel like a proud mum sitting here watching you grow and navigate your lives. So it wasn't for you. So what?? You gave it a shot and took us along for the ride, it was great! We seem to be conditioned to worry about what others think about us, I only realised much later in life it really doesn't matter. Your happiness is all that counts, you're both decent young people who have a great opportunity to see the world, more power to you. We packed up 12 years of a life abroad and arrived back in the UK with a suitcase each. Unfortunately our move was forced but we now have the chance to explore new areas again. Can't wait to see where we're off to next! 😀❤❤
I like warmth but there is a cut off point where the high heat zaps my energy and add in humidity and yuck. If it's cold, put on more clothing, if it's too hot there is only so far you can go to cool off. So, I'm with you Julia. It's sad to make a large move in living space but it's very mature of you to make a decision to move your location. It's said, everything happens for a reason.
That was such an honest and courageous video to make, but I genuinely believe that it's better to cut your losses and move forward rather than keep pretending all is well. Fate definitely played a hand in your decision and I hope this made it a bit easier for you. This was an apartment versus your life and mental wellbeing, so no contest. I adore spending a month in Greece every summer, but could I live there? No, because it's not home. You're both so young and you've got plenty of time to decide where you want to make a permanent base, so just continue with your adventures and when the time is right, you'll know. Sending you both much love and luck.
First, big hugs to you both.
Second, I hate the heat and humidity too. That right there would be a deal breaker for me but I had friends who moved there for several years, American expats. They loved living there, it was inexpensive and felt really welcomed by the people. When my friend got pregnant though she started to get homesick and little things crept in until they eventually did move back to the States.
There is nothing wrong with changing your mind. It's not a sign of weakness or failure, things just change. Your perspective changed and it's time to move on. You don't need to make excuses, that's just how life is.
trurthj
Matt and Julia, you have absolutely nothing to apologise for, or even explain your reasons for moving on. It was an experience for you both to base yourselves in Bangkok but you both feel it's time to move on, enough said. It's great to settle for a while, get to know a place but what's important is that you both feel the same way. Also we learn all life and gather lots of lovely memories. Happy and safe travels. Gail Czech Republic ❤️ ❤️
Bangkok seems very pretty and the food looks delicious. I could never deal with the heat/weather. I totally understand your decision, and please look at it as a learning experience. The two of you are adventurous, don’t feel badly, it is just one step on a wonderful journey.❤
You never know how things will pan out, unless you experience it !! ❤❤❤❤
I’m in the same boat with Julia: I am from south Mississippi, but I absolutely HATE the tropical heat. I live in Labrador now and it is wonderful (not the government, the scenery). Take care & be safe out there!
What happened to you is just life. Keep calm and carry on 😇 Love to enjoy your next adventures…. 🎉❤
I spent a week in Kuala Lumpur this March... It was in the mid 70s, my favorite temp range here in Seattle, but with the added humidity it felt like 90-100 and the constant sweating was unbearable. I was there exploring future retirement locations, KL , while beautiful, is definitely out because of the weather.
Life is always a learning curve❤❤
I get it! Part of your lifestyle is being able to get up and go, remember your whole point of what you do is listening to your needs and desires in life . Don’t be hard on yourselves , you’re not a failure I think the opposite because you’ve learned to be true to your desires in life! That’s what we love about you both. It’s part of your adventure!❤️💙
htgh
The Humidity drains the very life out of you i would rather deal with a cold environment than a hot humid environment, Wonderful Channel ❤
Heat and Humidity? NO THANKS! I grew up in NYC and HATE the humidity and heat of August. Live in SoCal now: dry and cool or warm, but no real humidity.
The humidity is the devil for sure 😄❤️
And you eat ramen noodles everyday to enjoy that weather.
@@sarpsevinc8415 ?
This is the kind of experience where real growth happens!

I am so uplifted to watch this video - I feel like a switch flipped and all of the angst of wondering about "did we fail" has so clearly transformed into "glad to have tried it and here we go forward to the next new plan" - I think you will be less inclined now going forward to feel torn about change and feel more forgiving of yourselves. How wonderful for your future planning! Life does contain surprises and so many more of them are ultimately good when you leave room to love what comes next. One wonderful surprise in my life is having discovered you and it makes my day when you present your current experiences. 🥰❤
Stay safe . We love you so much !!!!
Thank you so much! Lots of love to you too 🥰❤️
A recent subscriber here and so glad to have found your videos. And I agree with previous comments that this indeed is not a failure at all. Despite all the thoroughness and planning, sometimes you just have to actually be in it to know if it's right or not ... You show maturity when you are honest with yourselves - not wasting anyone's time. I will be following your journey in your future videos. Your new apt looks like it could be UK, but looks rather Eastern European😉. Sending you much love and all the best from NYC.❤
Non of us has a crystal ball. Think of it as one more amazing experience And move on. I know you’ll do great!❤️
Good luck wherever you land. It’s good to cut your losses when you have come to the right decision. 😊
We know how you love the cold and snow Julia! Im surprised you considered such a hot and humid place.
with you 100% ! I love rain and cold weather. I could never stand Thailand and it's only by trying that you know, please don't feel sorry - it's part of the process
If we had a pound for everything that didn't work out in the past. We would be very wealthy people today. However it was meant to be for you guys because in the end , your friend
was there to take over the obligations of the apartment. Life leads you to twists and turns on the road. And who knows, you might be right back there again. As always, Love you ❤❤
Guys. Harriet, Jim and Yuki
I don't mind the heat, but I hate being sweaty all the time, especially at night. You can always add layers, but you can't take any more off!
You two honestly!
So real and truthful .
Nothing false! 😊
Pleasure to listen and watch.
I love you guys. Everything we do is an experience we need, living in Thailand was an experience you both needed. It's not a failure. The roads we take shape who we become, sometimes in small ways we may not even see. I live on the East coast of the US in Maryland's Eastern Shore area. It gets really hot and humid here in the summers and usually pretty good and cold in the winters but its seems that the winters are getting warmer here but it is a break from the heat and humidity. There is no way I could live in that type of climate all the time. I find it exhausting, even more so the older I get. I don't understand those who prefer the heat and humidity over snow...I love snow even though it hasn't snowed all the much over the last few years here. So you two are on to the next experience. I'm excited to see where you decide to go next. Thank you for all you do and share with us, it means so much! xoxoxo
You are, objectively speaking, exploring a NEW uncharted whole WORLD of SHARING possibilities. Impossible to innovate without trial and learning (there are no errors)
I totally understand not being able to live in the hot and humid climate. I’m a winter person myself.
Julia, I am from Bulgaria and I struggle with heat too. You are not alone ❤
The section between 2:45 and 3:14 fooled me while watching as the bird chirping in the background has the same sound as my notification sound on my Xiaomi phone. I kept looking on my phone without realizing the sounds are coming from the 5.1 Soundbar above the TV set. 😅😅
You guys ❣ You are both overthinking a lot! Relax, enjoy, go where the wind and where your guts take you - you don't make mistakes, you collect experiences, and they will all make forever-memories 💖
I would've done the same thing, move on to greener and cooler pastures. Your brain, thoughts and most importantly, your spirit will thank you. All the best and may *God* Bless You Both Always, Good Luck...
Aww bless you guys. I love all of your advice and positive approach to life. You nailed it on the head. You made no mistake, just trying out new things!
I was in Bangkok last October. As a born and bred Londoner, I found Bangkok faaaar too hot for me! I barely did a third of the things I had planned because all I wanted to do was seek out air conditioning! I feel I missed out on so much because of that, but I just felt completely drained by the heat and humidity. I did do a side trip up to Luang Prabang in Laos, and found the weather a lot more bearable, although I still found myself having to frequently sit down and rest!
Sometimes, a place just isn't for us, regardless of the beauty and fascinating culture. 🤷♂️
Thanks for all your uploads. Stay saf.
We have fun watching your exploits and all the everyday stuff. Love your sister, too, Julia. Thanks for the update. You don’t know what you don’t know, and in this case you now know what you didn’t know before. 😜 In other words, when it comes to world travel and exploration, learning through trial-and-error is to be expected. Planning and cost/benefit analysis only gets you so far and sometimes gets in the way of true exploration. We live somewhere that has very high heat and humidity for about 6-7 months out of the year. I love to be outside, but find myself hiding inside, where there is a/c, for 4 months out of the year. I guess its a trade-off? Because if we lived further North, then I'd probably be hiding inside from the worst parts of Winter.
You certainly haven’t failed!! You are constantly moving forward in your travels and being aware when it’s just not working and now you’re moving on for your next adventure together! If you continue to stay feeling the wrongness that wouldn’t be healthy in mind or body! Honestly I admire you because when I was your age and older I knew 150% what I needed to do, but didn’t for all the wrong reasons and boy do I regret all those wasted years that I can never get back!
Also I cannot cope at all with heat and humidity!!! 😩
Take care and keep doing you, Julia & Matt 🍧🍧🥰🙅♀️🙅♀️👍🏻
You never know until you try!
I'm also hard on myself for "failing" because something wasn't permanent or didn't last as long as I thought it would. But I try to remind myself that life is really just chapters and when something doesn't work out, I didn't fail - It was just a chapter and I'm moving on to the next one! Happy travels!❤
Don't be too hard on yourselves, guys. We are all adjusting to real life experience as we go and it takes time and experience to sort through priorities. Julia, I couldn't handle Thailand's heat & humidity either - I couldn't even go there for a holiday!!!
Lots of comments today already wow. I related to this for several reasons. Hating the heat is a huge issue I have. But overthinking things and trying to make something work when you know it is not really logical is unfortunately something I am familiar with as well. You will be much happier going forward. I predict this because you are having some growing pains in your journey and are learning and growing. It feels like you have just made it over a huge hill and are "turning a corner" to bigger and better things. I think your group tours were going to start this month from what I read. I wish you all the best and will keep watching. Be safe and healthy both of you!!!
I live in Australia. My wife and I have travelled to various parts of Europe and Asia, with most of the planning done by me. Whilst all the arrangements have worked out exactly as planned, almost without exception, I later felt as though I'd made the wrong decisions.
Despite the considerable costs, I don't really have any problem admitting it to myself.
I think people find it difficult to admit that something designed to be such a great experience was a giant waste of time.
Tbh I expected this move sooner😊 It did seem like a strange choice considering the location of the tours you announced and…well, Julia’s Siberian affinity for the cold😊😊
I haven’t watched till the end yet but probably Central-Eastern Europe or even the Baltic region would make more sense?
PS I’m with you on that, I hate tropical climates, the humidity, I get permanent headaches, I can’t tolerate it for more than few days. And I lived in a semi-tropical region a good chunk of my life, still can’t get used to the humidity on top of the heat.
I’m proud of you both for trying new things and doing what’s best for you. And, also, knowing when you need to reevaluate and redirect when something isn’t working. Julia, I’m such an overthinker. I wish I had the wisdom and courage to change things. It does complicate life. Also, I DESPISE heat and hot weather. I’ve often wished I could be one of those who love it. I love your honesty and willingness to be vulnerable. I’m “mom proud” of you both. Love you! 🥹🤍😍 Donna
Respect for admitting making mistakes and being open telling your viewers. We watch many vloggers and most inform us of the ups and downs of their travels and countries they travel or try to live in. You guys are being honest and not trying to lie to your viewers. Thank you!
Love ya both, you don’t have to explain, go with your feelings & emotions,, you tried it, hey ho, you move on, your never a failure only when you give up,, keep up the great work, love from John in Ukraine 🇺🇦😉, your both winners, Julia love ya giggles, and Matt love your Rod Stewart voice, don’t be upset guys carry on as usual ❤❤
Be yourselves
We love you both 💖
You’re such an amazing couple and you will find many more chances happening in your life in the future! I totally agree with you as Thailand is way too humid and hot! Love and light to you both on the next chapter of your journey ❤❤❤😊
Coming from southern US, the last place I would go would be to another hot, humid buggy climate. That being said, I would love to visit. The excessive humidity sucks the life out of you if you live it on a daily basis. If you never give change a shot you’ll miss out on an adventure.
I totally get the heat thing. I'm the same way. I live on the coast of Oregon and it is perfect for me. We get around 10 days of 80 degrees and I melt. The rest of the time it stays around 65 degrees in the summer and 45 degrees in the winter. Sending peace-filled thoughts to everyone.
Long time follower. Patreon Supporter. You do what is comfortable fo you. It the right choice now. Sending you much love ❤❤from Richmond, Va. Harriet , Jim and Yuki
Love you guys ❤️❤️❤️
You never know if something works out until you try it out.
Going somewhere on a jolly is completely different to living somewhere. I agree with Julia about the heat, I can barely stand but have become more used to it. Took 14 years to mind, I miss the cold weather in the Toon believe it or not!
Throughout your winding discourse I was wondering whether the doubts were about you guys as a couple, as a business, and all the aspects young people ask themselves before finding their ways. All the best!
It's still really cool you got to live there for some time! Maybe not as long as you thought or expected but that's how things are sometimes.
I loved this--so honest and real--but you're right--ideas look fantastic when you're not exactly living it--now you know! And I can't stand the heat!!!
You should check out sanctioned Ivan’s post, he is saying the same thing about the heat in Thailand. I think he is about 1 hr from where you are, and is embarking on getting a Thai Dr license and an AC car to escape the heat.
Julia, you are not alone, I also struggle in the tropical climat, my body just cannot take it. (First 25 years of my life I lived in Latvia with 4 seasons!)
❤ I hate the heat too I love the cold weather and the sports that you could do it ❤!!! Enjoy your new apartment !!!!
I am not built for that kind of humidity either! I enjoy visiting the southern US but I know I couldn’t live there! Best of luck in your new adventures!! Looking forward to seeing them!
Don’t be hard on yourselves, rather be kind to yourselves and to each other. Life is a (not easy) journey and you learn a lot along the way. Look at this as something you tried and decided wasn’t for you. Not a mistake, or even a setback - just something that you wanted to try and decided against/on something else entirely. (I’m in my late 40s, so I’m just sharing some stuff that I’ve learned from life thus far)
Thank you for your content and your openness. Looking forward to more!
I'm with you...I also do not love the heat. I would love fall and winter all year round.
I had the same feeling about the apartment being your "home base", but you beat me to it. My biggest concern was that it didn't seem you were ever there! So why pay all that rent??
I would have thought to have Julia's Family Apartment in Siberia as your home base -- would make a lot more sense to me. Cheers.
Agreed and cheaper
You are young. Stop being so hard on yourself. You will figure it all out in time. You both are still trying to figure things out and to be sure when the time is right everything will make sense and work out and you will be where you are supposed to be
Great so no worries, Chris turned up! Thailand is generally halfway to and from anywhere. But there's no place like home
I'm so sorry that you're leaving. I'm mainly a visual artist, but I have been experimenting with video projects. I have made plans to visit Thailand and I was hoping to meet you all. and collaborate on a project or two. Oh well, keep traveling and carrying on. :)
That's the beauty of freedom... having the ability to travel and live anywhere your heart desires. Also, you didn't fail, you've displayed growth. Cheers to your exciting journey!
Julia, I have also had the experience of lots of the people around me preferring the heat and which had the effect of feeling I was strange. Your talking of this made it clear to me that I cannot continue living in such a hot place (Kerala, India), and is giving me permission to make a change. BTW there are plenty of us who can't take too much heat and humidity! ❣️
Thank you very much for coming to Thailand and offering good things to the people of the world to see our Thailand if they have a chance to visit Thailand again.
So glad y'all are getting all these life experiences tho! And as a fellow overthinker, speaking of experiences, you CAN NOT think through things you must experience! It's part of being a physical human. While our brains are good at stuff, one thing they can't do is fully "pre-experience" as a full body system. Soak up all that grace for yourselves, enjoy your freedoms, and embrace experiences. Much love from Wisconsin.
Looks really humid the weather there goodluck with your plans follow your hearts and do what you feel is right for yous id really struggle there been a lot of very hot countrys but humidity is a nightmare anyway i enjoy your vloggs take care 👍👍
No mistakes made here, just lessons learned on your journey. All the best…
As someone from Minnesota I loved visiting Thailand but god was I glad to finally leave the heat and humidity. I can empathize with Julia about the heat, Id step outside and immediately start melting. Somehow I could tell I was still sweating when it was raining out.
Best to You Both!
Life Experiences are that and Growing from them becomes a Positive!
No Worries!..😘👍
Best USA 🇺🇸 ❤
Every time I am watching you it amaze me how come Julia speak so well english, with england accent. I am french from Canada and I tried so hard to speak a decent english. I can’t and I am just so much jealous of Julia. How did you do that for sake ?
Wish you to find your best home base for the rest of your journey.
❤❤ You are a lovely couple, I wish you the best, we have all lived in places that were not right after a time, thats life, moving on is good for the soul.
Growth!!👍👍👍
Don't be so hard on yourselves. Everyone makes mistakes. Go and have new adventures . Stay safe take care. 😺 X
We lived in SE Asia for two years. I (Brandon) am Canadian. I grew up with the cold. In those two years, I NEVER even REMOTELY got used to the heat and humidity..so you're not alone. 😂
The reason we ended up leaving was mostly due to the climate.
We planned on buying property in Spain, moved there at some point, and also decided within a few weeks that we didn't want to buy anything there.
My Canadian blood isn't meant for a hot climate. At least not permanently. I've confirmed this 100%.
We are headed back to SE Asia next year to travel. We both love it dearly for so many reasons..but I'm already dreading the heat and humidity. The nice thing about not settling is that at least you can head to a colder climate every now and then for a break.
Looking forward to seeing what else you guys have planned. 😊
I feel the same about heat as you do, Julia, and even moreso about humidity. My ancestors all came from Scandinavia or, more recently, the prairies of Canada, and I am drawn to the north when I am anywhere above the Equator. To me, the Bangkok weather is torture. That my beloved husband died of melanoma from sun exposure has just heightened those feelings. If I could live anywhere (and did not have grandchildren in the U.S.), I would live in Finland or New Zealand. I guess we'll have to wait to see if you decide to have another headquarters home now and, if so, where. Best wishes!
Hi Mat and julia ...after long time back i wrote comment here, how are you guys,
Both of god bless you
I was surprised you decided on Bangkok as a base because you, Julia, love the cold. I was happy you were closer to Australia but if the climate isn’t right for you then you need to be where you are more comfortable. You will find your happy home base somewhere in the world.
Good video...i keep meaning to ask matt where did you get your tattoos done..i'm addicted
Hey mate, i did them in Crawley, UK, in a place called Studio 13, the guy is called Pavel 🤗
I get it. If you are uncomfortable every time you step outside your door it is huge. That is why when I was younger, I moved from the U.S. state of Wisconsin to the Seattle area and it became my base from the time I was 17 until 2022, a span of 40 years. Although I was away from my family (parents and siblings) I felt so much better physically. Then with the deterioration of things in the U.S. as far as the economy, the violence and the catastrophic loss of person freedoms, I no longer felt like I could find refuge anywhere in the U.S. That is one more reason I live here. The weather is pleasant year round (compared to Wisconsin which is, hot and humid in the summer, frigid in the winter) it is relatively free of violence, and here there is freedom, something missing in the U.S. Sorry I had to resort to watching you on U tube, but Odysee is having Issues right now. Greetings from Batumi .
Guys I wish u all the best, Matt you’re so right that it’s totally okay to make mistakes - I trust 100% you’ll find what’s right for you at the right time. And Julia I can relate sooo much I am a massive overthinker too. A few years ago I bought a boat that was supposed to be my “forever home” only a year and a half later decided I wanted to travel instead of. It’s not the end of the world. And I have this little feeling of where you might end up moving to hehe 😅 sending lots of love your way - wherever u are. From England xxx
I worked in the Niger delta in the Oil Services Indistry where it was very hot and very humid. Not somewhere I would consider living long term, and climate is justone of the issues.
Yes. This I think is because living somewhere is so different than visiting. And you needed to live here to know what you now know. You cannot think your way through a feeling. You had to experience it. And I hate the heat. :))
Home is where the heart is. Don't try to over think it as it is not a mind issue, it is a heart issue. Trust your heart. I left 'home' at 18 and spent 30 years living literally all over the USA. I am now back 'home' (Upstate New York) where it all started years ago and I am at peace. Also, do NOT feel bad about not liking the heat. I spent 4 years in Arizona and years later spent another 8 in New Mexico. I hate the heat and will never regret leaving it. Give me a cold winters day in the Adirondacks any time! Follow your heart.
I would not be able to stand the humidity in Thailand for months on end. One hot and humid month per year is OK. But not several months per year.
I live on Maui Hawaii and the weather is just perfect. I own my own place. However I'm currently in India taking care of my mom and I've been looking to live in Hua Hin in Thailand near the ocean. Yes the humidity can be oppressive but it is not like that all the time. In Thailand the city of Chiang Mai is cooler and can be cold in Winter but suffers from poor air quality during the burning season in summer.
It´s a long time, for many reasons, I did not see your videos. Not because of you but because of me. I understand fully. It´s a long way from "home". I agree with many of the others, you learned a lot, and you had to learn this first hand. F.ex. that you Julia can´t take the heat. I LOVE your walkes as always. It´s like travelling for a while.
Completely understand. I have seen some of your videos, you seem to be in a cold climate, with family nearby, some maybe your base should be there. Best wishes for your new plans, very good luck. Chris Thailand, retired 10 years here.
With Thai family.
Like the climate as same as Middle East where I was an Airline pilot, for 30 years,
"Nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there!" Can't wait to see where you've landed!
Can't stand heat either 💜 Unfortunately it's getting warmer everywhere
Heat is okay but humidity is so tiring. Don't be hard on yourselves. It didn't work out so now move on to the next adventure. ❤
