- Who are the Molokans? The Russian Religious Christian Sect exiled to Azerbaijan from Central European Russia in the 1800’s. This group of people don’t have photos in their homes, don’t watch TV, don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. They set up home in the village of Ivanovka in the centre of Azerbaijan. A place where they were free to practice their own religion and live in peace.
These ethnic Russians were banished here during the Russian Empire period by Tsar Katherine the great for their different religious beliefs and in the hope to cause them issues from the local Azeri muslim population. However, this wasn’t the case and the Russian population were welcomed in to Azerbaijan and have stayed here ever since, throughout both the Soviet Union period and the period of modern Azerbaijan.
Nowadays, there are generations of Molokans who speak Russian, are ethnically Russian but have no association with the modern country. We travelled to Ivanovka to explore and fond out more about this unique Christian sect, their traditions and how they live in 2022 & modern Azerbaijan more generally 🇦🇿🇷🇺

I loved this place. I'm a 57 year old American citizen. I remember the preinternet days. NO cell phones. I miss those days. I have been following Azerbaijan type of videos on UA-cam because I relish the simpler times. I was born in Argentina so I'm talking RURAL memories. Thank you for sharing this with us, stay safe.
Everything about this vlog was total class. From Julias voice over which is genuinely so professional .The filming is superb. The way you manage to make us feel were actually there with you is so special.Thank you.
Thank you so much Nick! Really means the world to us! ❤️❤️❤️
What a story to tell guys. This is what distinguishes you from other UA-camrs. Harriet and I never miss a vlog. You guys just get better and better. We knew nothing about Molokans. So friendly
they are to extend their home to you. They don't watch their lives on TV. They live it every day without distraction. Love You Matt and Julia💖💖💖 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.
Thank you so much guys! Really appreciate your support 🥰❤️❤️❤️
These two portrays like there is no problem in Russia while Russia is wrecking havoc throughout the world economy.

Oh my favorite people came to Azerbaijan! Glad to see you guys here!
Thank you so much 🥰 amazing to be here! ❤️
Beautiful country. Such friendly people. Thank you for letting me visit.
Thank you so much for coming along with us Kathy ❤️
Were it not for this video I would have never heard of the Molokans. Thank you for posting this!

I am no longer a practicing Molokan and have not been since childhood, but I am always deeply interested about where the Molokans got to after their exile. There are thousands here in my home of Australia, and tens of thousands within America (predominantly along the West Coast). There was also a settlement in Mexico which has very little remaining traces albeit a few families as well as a beautiful museum that I would very much like to visit someday.
Apparently, I am alive today due to a great great grandfather jumping off a train after being forcibly conscripted to a war that they likely would not have survived. Although I am no longer practicing, the legacy of my people is still very important to me and there may come a day where my child will want to know of our heritage and story. Thanks for the video :)
I live in Oregon, where there are a few hundred Molokans. I and my wife made a break with the Molokan church when we aligned ourselves with a Christian fellowship based in Norway. I could not have made such a move without my upbringing as a Molokan, of which I am deeply grateful. I also am still very interested in Molokan subjects -- history, traditions, personalities, worship, beliefs, etc.
@@larrymiller4 What a small world, I have a few family members in Oregon and my grandmothers maiden name is Slivkoff! I wouldnt be suprised if we have some mutual contacts
I so very much enjoyed this video.. you just keep getting better and better, so proud of you Matt & Julia. I thank you for taking us on these adventures & sharing the various cultures with us. This one really struck me, the woman sharing their beliefs - no pork, no alcohol, no idols, no mysterious symbols just full of the Holy Spirit.. maybe it hit me harder because it aligns with my own studies & what I've learned along the way. So glad you share the Molokans and their life with us. Thank-you!
So happy you enjoyed it Rita! Thank you so much for your lovely message 🥰❤️
What a village. Quaint and old yet the people were all lovely. I won't lie I was a little scared for you guys at first, but then I understood why the lady said she and her husband would not want to leave. I watch a couple from Azerbaijan and they always bite into something sweet before they sip their tea. Since they never sweeten their teas I assumed that's why they eat something sweet each sip. That's what the chocolate was for...LOL.
Wonderful video as always...never miss a single vlog. Stay safe guys. 🤩
For sure, tea here is always served with some sort of sweets or jams. We love it! 😍
Thank you so much ❤️
You being scared for them whilst they are speaking to pacificsts made me laugh for some reason😂
There are a few other Molokan villages in various remote rural parts of Azerbaijan worth visiting as well. thanks for the nice video
Matt & Julia, there are numerous Molokan communities throughout California , the city of Kerman located in Fresno County has a well established community . Thanks for an informative and entertaining presentation .
This is true. There is a large molokan population in Southern California as well. My brother married a girl from Fresno, or more likely “Kerman”; however we mostly referred to it as “Fresno”. The Molokan communities in LA/Orange County and the Central Valley are very close knit while at the same time marrying their kids together.
Marriage with people who are not Molokan is not allowed
@FoxWolfWorld You speak correctly as many of my ancestors are buried in Kern County. My family immigrated from Russia to the San Francisco and San Bernadino area. My great grandmother is buried at the Molokan Russian Cemetary and my family had to fight to have her son buried next to her. West Sacramento, up here in the North, is predominantly a Russian community. We visit one of the shops at least once a year. I love my heritage. ❤
@adrienbeatty both my grandparents and great grandparents(and other relatives)are buried in the Russian cemetery in San Francisco.
This was oddly moving. I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe because it seems like a glimpse into days long gone in the world as I know it today. Thank you both ❤❤
Thank you so much Dai! Really appreciate it 🥰❤️
I love the beautiful soft way you both are with people. We should all be thus with everyone.
Thank you so much Seamus 🥰❤️
Really interesting and very enjoyable video, thanks guys!🤩 Enlightening to discover the Molokans through your eyes. Inspiring to hear how the different ethnicities live together in such harmony. Although Ivanovka looks a bit run down, I think the warmth of the people and the beautiful setting (as seen from the aerial views) more than make up for that! You will definitely bring joy to those people Julia, as you bring joy and smiles to all of us! ❤❤
Thank you so much Johan for your kind words and for always being so kind and supportive to us. It really means the world to us! Sending lots of love 😘❤️
♥️♥️
Oh my gosh, I am so glad UA-cam suggested this channel! I hope to go to Azerbaijian some day, it looks like a lovely country filled with amazing people (and that guesthouse was wonderful).
Thank you so much! 🥰 Welcome to the channel 🙌🏼❤️
Welcome to Azerbaijan 🇦🇿
The Molokans are much like some of the groups here in Canada, no "churches", icons, hierarchy, and simple lives without any of the other "conveniences" . They're obviously keeping the traditional lives of their ancestors.
There are collective farms here too, but gov't regulations mean the titles are registered.
Interesting combination of cultures, religious beliefs, and practices among so many diverse people. Thank you for the window into a place where people live in peace amongst each other.
Thank you so much! So happy you enjoyed it and found it interesting! ❤️ Really appreciate it! 🥰
Loving your style in this video. A very snazzy mix of styles, kind of between an educational documentary and an investigation documentary. I now know about the Molokans, whom I knew nothing about before this video - awesome! With your Russian connection/language/knowledge, etc...your content in this area is super powerful. Bring on the rest of Russia I say! Seriously good stuff.
Thank you so much Hamish! Honestly really appreciate it!!! 😍 Comments like this really drive us to keep going and improving ❤️❤️❤️
I've just today come across your videos, and the two of you are just lovely. I love following your travels! Thank you for your joyful and beautiful take the lives of every day people in some of the most unknown and misunderstood parts of the world. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much! Means the world 🙏🏼❤️
Fascinating. I always learn something new in your videos and this one was instructive and surprising as well. Some of the customs of the Molokans remind me of the Amish in the USA who are much stricter and more devout than them it seems. Thanks for introducing us to this interesting group of people.
Thank you so much Marta! 🥰 Yes for sure definitely a lot of similarities 😊 so glad you enjoyed it ❤️🥰
There are so many travel vlogs on UA-cam. Everyone else here is travelling but not really exploring the countries they visit. They are tourists, you are the true travellers. Keep on going guys and don't change.
Thank you so much Barbara! Really appreciate it 🥰❤️
This video was so interesting! You both share so much about the places you go, I never heard of this community before . The people were so genuine !

Super interesting video guys you excel in this region of the world. it's a shame more people seem to watch rubbish generic copycat content than actual real stuff like this but that's youtube for you.
Also curious would you both say you are Christian or,
Thank you mate! 🙏🏼 For sure, social media is a fickle place! How’s Armenia?
Neither of us are religious at all to be honest, nor were we christened, but religion intrigues us and certainly how people of different faiths live among one another, you?
@@MattandJulia Armenia is incredible we understand why you love the caucasus we've never seen this level of hospitality and invites to everything. I though Julia would have been Christian with her background, we are Christian yeah. Keep doing stuff like this anyway it's great :)
Fascinating video, as always. I love how you always appreciate the diverse cultures and people you encounter during your travels, and how respectful you are of them. Many people can learn from your kind, positive attitude, besides how educational your content is. Keep up your great work, and be well! ❤
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it, means the world 🥰❤️🙏🏼
Absolutely fascinating and such a stark contrast to the video about Baku. Thanks as usual! Keep up the great work!
:)
Everything in this village is like in the Soviet time, nothing has changed
You should come back and visit the Jewish settlement in the north of Azerbaijan which was established back in 17 century. There are other regions of Azerbaijan that are very interesting such as Shaki with Khan’s palace - UNESCO World heritage, Lahich, Khinalig and many more… Also the food varies from region to region. All delicious!!!!
Great video and very interesting! Thank you so much for sharing. It's content like this, is why I follow you guys. Not only are you showing us the fun side but also the side "travelers" don't get to see. Much appreciated. Safe travels!
Thank you so much! Your comment honestly means the world to us 🥰❤️
A wonderful vlog, giving us an insight in a group of people that I’m sure, most would of never heard of before, and what a lovely group of people they seem, and to see all communities living side by side and getting on together, can only teach us all something, the guest house owner seemed really nice, and the older generations you spoke to, were very open and honest about their way of life, looked like you both enjoyed your time there, anyway, as usual, enjoy and have fun on your travels, oh and getting a slab of chocolate with your cups of tea, I’m with Julia on this one, I’m moving there too lol
Thank you so much David! So glad you enjoyed it and found it interesting! 🥰 And let us know in what street you get your property, we’ll get the place next door 😀❤️
love your videos, so enjoyable and educational. Thank you for sharing your lives with us, and enriching ours greatly. Love from Suffolk,England.
Thank you so much Robert! Really appreciate it 🥰
Hi Matt and Julia 👋. What an informative, eye opening and enjoyable video. I have read of different groups that moved to the "outlying" regions of the Empire during Catherine the Great's reign but didn't know anything of the Molokans. I am fascinated with their beliefs and find them quite appealing to Christians such as myself who yearn for "getting back to the basics" of faith and away from the "trappings" of the ritualized practices and infrastructure of "the church". Just observing how so many different faiths get along peacefully (as Matt pointed out) seems to give weight to their "practicing what they preach". Thanks, guys for your ability to get people to happily open up to both of you and share their thoughts and experiences. Take care, stay well and safe. Have a pleasant and rewarding week. 👍🫂❤️🙏🌎
Thank you so much John, really appreciate it! So glad you found it as interesting as we did 🥰❤️
So interesting video, thank you :) My ancestors from mother side were molokans, but from Armenia. Unfortunately, I don't know much about their way of life. And I try to find more information)
Спасибо 🌹 Fascinating.I did.think they were close to the Old Testament/Hebrew/Jewish but we are allowed to drink(Kosher wine)How great to hear faiths living in Peace💛
So glad you enjoyed it Stella 🥰❤️
This is so interesting, as a non-denominational Christian i find this sect really fascinating. I watch Eli from Russia YT channel and it’s amazing how many different groups of people there are.
Really glad you enjoyed it and we could show you something different Gina 🥰❤️
Please take care it was reported that eli from russia is a propaganda vlog
Hardly
I wish they went into more detail in what they believe. I can't see how not drinking or eating pork could get them exile by the Orthodox church? As an Orthodox myself who grandmothers family were from ohrid & had Bogomil ancestry it seems inconsistent to me that a group so far in belief from Orthodoxy in Macedonia coexisted with no problems that one which (nothing I can see) ideas aren't incompatible at all would be exiled?

I love your little side excursions. So many others seem to be rushing whereas you two are so open and curious about everything. I actually did not realize just how widespread the Russian language was. I guess it makes sence due to 'former' union. These people all seem so friendly. Thank you both...pleasant travels.
Thank you so much 🥰❤️ For sure, it is spoken by around 260 million worldwide, with the majority of those speakers in the former Soviet states 😊
Добрый день. При Союзе люди жили проще, но веселее, были добрее друг к другу, никто не делился по национальности, жили дружно. Конечно, определенные проблемы были, но было и много хорошего. Поэтому на референдуме многие голосовали против развала СССР.
You guys are incredibly kind and respectful when you talk to people. Greetings from Azerbaijan! You just earned a new subscriber :)
Thanks for another great video, Matt & Julia. Fascinating stuff here! Love your storytelling!

Really nice episode guys, in the sea of 20somethings hoping to travel the world and support themselves on UA-cam you two are refreshing and unique. Always interesting, a bit goofy yet, more substance at the same time. Safe Travels. The Molokans seem lovely and are on a much more genuine path than following the catholic/orthodox perversions.

My mom's dad was a Molokan from the village of Lipovka, 100km north of Tsaritsyn, now Volgograd. I grew up in BC Canada, and Ivanovka seems like home to me.

Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏼❤️
Matt, you are a very lucky guy. Julia's smile can turn every hard day at the office into a huge smile. Your wife is amazing!
Thank you both so much for the videos. Greetings from Belgium
This was really interesting. Molokans as you describe them seem to be a sort of Russian Amish people, or perhaps more like the non conformists that broke off from the Anglican church in the UK around the time of the reformation. And they have erected a statue to Martin Fry. Nice The Quakers don't use a church in the traditional sence either, but meet together without a 'preacher'. This was really interesting. Thanks.
Yes I think you are absolutely right 😊 in Russia there are also ‘old believers’ too 😊 so glad you enjoyed it ❤️
Mmm .., interesting. Sorry you didn't get to the Meeting, this vlog!

I love this
This is my first time seeing this, both of you are very respectful.....
I saw a couple from Australia went to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, the wife was very disrespectful and very judgemental from her face to her body..Lol I was feeling very embarrassed to watch ......
I’m a molokan in Southern California. Our people immigrated here, and you will find a large population here. I want to find the history of our people. I have a hunch that many were forced to places like southern Ukraine or Azerbaijan.
My family was part of the Molokan community in SF and Sheridan. My great grand father Maxim Savelich Popov founded the prayer house on Carolina St. In SF.
I loved this vid - so interesting
Thank you so much Jess ❤️❤️❤️
I spent my summers at my grandparents place in a small town in northern California called Sheridan. (About 40 miles north of Sacramento). It was a railroad town during the gold rush, abandoned and then resettled by Molokan families in the 1920s. My great grandfather was the speaker for their community, and he helped the entire village immigrate from Kars Province (now in Turkey) to the states after the Russo-Japanese war. He lost three sons at the battle of Tsushima after they were conscripted.
They were Steadfast Molokan people like the ones in your video. When I was a kid in the Seventies, there were only 250 people in Sheridan, and I was related to almost everyone in some way. We said we don't have a family tree, we have shrubbery.
Your videos are so interessting

I was born and raised as a Molokan Spiritual Christian "Jumper" (prigun) in Southern California, where a few thousand still practice their faith. The brief history that Sarkhan told you is the same I was taught, that the Molokani broke sharply from the strict, formal ritual of the Orthodox Church as they were led to worship God by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They grew in number, and were perceived as a threat to the Orthodoxy, which caused the Tsarina to exile them to Georgia and Armenia, assuming that this would destroy this rebellious sect. The Molokani believed in following the Mosaic dietary laws, which included total avoidance of consuming pork, which comported with the Muslim prohibition of the same.
Molokan born and raised here in California, USA. There are still many throughout California, Arizona, Oregon and Australia.
It might have been interesting to go to a Molokan church and potentially visit a service. The word "Molokan" I believe comes from the Russian word for milk "moloko" and this because the Molokans do not abstain from dairy products during Lent, as Orthodox Christian practice prescribes. Also, I believe you have a translation mistake when interviewing the old woman Molokan: she said that Orthodox Christians "cross themselves" not that they believe in the Cross. When she said that Molokans believe in the Holy Spirit, I think this means that their faith rejected the rites and traditions which had become so prominent in Russian Orthodoxy, a bit like Protestants criticism of Catholic ritual and rules/ascetic practices. Seeing their church, if any structures survived communism, would have shown another angle. But perhaps none exist and the faith is no longer actively practiced in church service gatherings?

The Molokans appear to be much like the Hutterian Brethren (Hutterites) that live in South & North Dakota and Minnesota. I grew up around them and they have collective farms and do not believe in military service. They don't generally buy alcohol but make their own. I don't know about pigs and a ban on pork but never saw them raising any. They also had communal prayer and did not allow television or multi-media.
Now .I love Molokans 😍 💞
