Taking a glimpse inside NORTH KOREA 🇰🇵 (surreal experience)

  • North Korea is one of the most closed countries on Earth for travel. After 3 years of complete isolation following the pandemic, it is still closed to this day. So, intrigued and hoping to get a glimpse of this fascinating nation, we travelled north from Seoul to the DMZ, the highly contentious border between North and South Korea, to learn more about life in both Korea's and how the two sides fell in to conflict in the first place and how it affects the daily lives of millions of Koreans on both sides to this day. We even managed to take a peek across the border, in to North Korea towards Pyongyang, over the town of Kaesong.

Some of the video gotten wrong name of the sea near Korea peninsula... it is historically 'East sea' correct and (Sea of Japan secondly) . Japan has invested much to change this name as the way they want globally... and lots of things bought it and showed it now wrong as Sea of Japan... which is totally wrong historically... hope you see it right, know it, and correct your subtitles ...name...your video has been great btw

Very interesting. My Grandad fought there so I went in Sept 2022 for a look around and saw all the things you did. I actually saw a NK farmer through a telescope and learned about the daft flag pole stuff, had my passport checked by military, had a rough wanker down the tunnel (you are right, proper effort getting down there). Good video.

As a military dependent I was born in Japan. As a 26 yr military veteran I spent 6 military years in Korea and 1 yr as a civilian in Korea. I went to all these places and more. South Korea is a beautiful place with VERY NICE PEOPLE! I still have friends there. My family and I have great memories of South Korea and really miss it.❤❤❤❤

For many of us in America, the Korean War was just the backdrop to the TV show MASH, which was in constant reruns as a kid. My great uncle served during the Korean War and fell in love with the country and spoke of it fondly. I’ve also been fortunate to work with a number of Koreans. A beautiful culture and people. I think you wonderfully captured the beauty and friendliness of a people who must live constantly on guard with eyes fixed north. The contrast between the DMZ and Donghae was so interesting to see. It was also interesting to see how touristy some parts of the DMZ are. Would not have guessed that.

Thank you, guys, for that fascinating video! Thanks for showing us what you could of the DMZ area. So interesting but sad. Julia, you are too cute! I’m with you on how that all makes one so sad. My family had relatives behind the Iron Curtain of East Germany so I understand the sadness. I’ve often thought about how life would be so much simpler because it is all within our control. I, too, love the wilder coastal areas. Keep the fun coming!

Really interesting to see your visit to the DMZ. I have never been to South Korea, but visited North Korea in November 2018. The DMZ and Kaesong was the first day trip. Our guide interestingly said she found visiting the DMZ from the north side much more relaxed than from Seoul. Kaesong is a beautiful city that feels like the heart beat of the Korean nation. I found the thought of 70+ years of total division heart wrenching. There is so little motor traffic outside of Pyongyang, and when the Covid lockdown came and I had an essential journey through my work, I immediately thought of usual service in the DPRK!

Thank you so much for the history. I was 5 when the war ended and they didn't teach about it in school. I learned about it from MASH, lol. I really like Donghae and it's neighboring town, they seem so laid back and comfortable. Such beautiful scenery to enjoy then you just scratch your head and wonder why they can't solve their differences. I guess that's war and if anything I'd like to see it all turn to peace.❤

I am a dad of a 7 year old boy that was kidnapped to South Korea.
Korea is a partner country of "Hague convention" that is supposed to promptly return children that were illegally taken across the border.
FBI was trying to book a flight to Korea to rescue the child. However, Korean government stopped them saying this is a civil matter and because it is not criminal in Korea, the dad should go through civil court. (Especially because Korea is a signatory state of Hague convention)
I did. Korea took 2 years to make a final decision that this boy has to PROMPTLY return to the US. But they didn't prepare an enforcement mechanism. I got a total of 10 court orders just in Korea(including the Korean Supreme court order). And my son Bryan's 3 week trip became a 5 year separation from me.
I talked to multiple Korean officials and although they admit the problem, nobody is taking responsibility.
They ask the child who doesn't even remember dad "Do you wanna stay here, or do you wanna go to Dad?" And if he says he wants to stay, they go home.
They say it's too late. "He doesn't remember you, so what do you want us to do?"
Korea calls this respecting the child.
On the other hand US court orders clearly states that the mother has serious concerns of mental issues and she is a threat to the child. The patenting evaluator said this is a form of child abuse.
Korea ignores this problem. They just say we can't do anything.
I love Korea and I wanted to trust that they can respect the law, but I am at a point that I have to take this into my own hands and raise public awareness. Last time I protested at Pike Place Market, and this time I went to Korean Consulate in Seattle.
    [Watch Video](ua-cam.com/video/4wXAvR_J6RI/v-deo.htmlsi=gY5cZd-HM1ycaGdg)
I would appreciate it if you can spread the words, and tell people.
If we can't bring Bryan back, no children will be safe from being abducted to South Korea.
    Thank you.

You cannot understand the partition of the Korean Peninsula, the Korean War, and subsequent events without a thorough understanding and consideration of the brutal murderous occupation of Korea by the Japanese early in the 20th century and up through their defeat in WW2. It was the equally brutal actions of the American-backed government of Syngman Rhee which precipitated the invasion from the North. Your video is well-intentioned, but superficial and naïve. The people of the Korean peninsula deserve better consideration by the global Internet.

Reminds me of Berlin, New Years Eve 1989. Standing on top of the wall that night at Brandenburg Gate. The unknown of what was beyond. Then the surreal moment around 1am people were breaching it (each way, and man we helped a lot of people up from the East side onto/over the wall). But before we left that night, we also hopped down into the East. The guards etc on patrol had all just cleared off. 'This is unexpected and nuts: How far do we dare going?'. Not so far, maybe a 30mins wander about, a few icy-cold hundred metres in/around, with eyes peeled. Wintery desolation. I watched M+Js fascinating vid here and it reminded me of that. And I thought, how might it be if one moment they had an hour when they could just wonder into the North and back, and how shocking might it be...

You asking if England and Ireland are similar is tantamount to a westerner asking you if Korea and Japan are the same. Ireland’s history like Korea’s, being located close to the larger more powerful countries, Japan and England, with conquest and subjugation being their motivations, are the differences.

I am an American (don't hold that against me, I'm not a Trump supporter), and I have been raised to dislike the North Koreans. I don't dislike them, I don't care for their leader, but the people of North Korea need their freedom. I feel bad for them, as many have been separated from family members in South Korea for decades older than me.
The thing that I notice is the lack of rubbish seen on the streets of Korea. The Korean people have respect of their neighbourhoods.

Julia, you made the right decision not going down into the tunnel. I went down and it felt so claustrophobic. Luckily we had to wear hard hats because I smacked my head on the ceiling a few times... but I wasn't the only one 😅

I love crab so much would have pleaded for buying it fresh from steamer and promptly sat down and dug in even without melted butter. When it comes to crab, I am an ugly american. Thanks for the tour my father was stationed in Korea the year before I was born. Never heard about it when was old enough to understand but think it affected him deeply

A question for Julia - are you tempted to use your Russian passport to visit North Korea over the Russia/North Korea border?

Hey Peter. It isn’t that easy, on any passport you need to go on a tour and besides it is still officially closed because of the pandemic x

In late February, yes. They will be the first group inside the country since 2020. But so far, that’s all, no further details on a reopening yet 🙂

Korea was divided instead of Japan after end of WW-II Japanese Pacific war 1945.
USSR Soviet union into Korea. and..
U.S army come into Korea at the same time in 1945
for taking geometric possession of the East Asia ideological boundary.
