I mean, Marques even made a video explaining what Hydrogen One is. He was really hyped to see a phone from his favourite camera company, RED.
What was RED thinking? No one cares about a 3D screen. What we expected from a RED phone is RED camera technology. Give us a decent OLED display and a kickass camera on the phone no frills. Thats all we asked for

I just learned about this phone. I instantly got excited for some top tier camera action. Quickly found out how gimmicky this phone is. Sadly, Red decided to attach their brand to a mediocre camera product!

RED should start making version 2 with better specs and the camera completely done by them.
I'm sure that's what RED is planning for a v2. But for now, I'm sure they're focused on maximizing what can be done with the software on the phone and the modules that will make it a platform.

Phones like the RED Hydrogen one remind me of the "Porsche" or "Lamborghini" edition phones that come out and you'd think they're fast and going to be ultra premium but it's nothing but the complete opposite.

Watch JerryRigEverything's teardown of this phone. Fake "dual" speakers on the bottom, cheap plastic stickers made to look like metal, and a plastic LED flash module. That, combined with the fact that it's not even a Red camera on the back makes this phone absolutley over-priced. Should cost $499 at BEST.

HTC EVO 3D also got the 3D holographic screen, I think its Gingerbread too, I had one and update it with Ice cream sandwich, it loses its 3D depth. I think Red might use an improve version of GIngerbread.

FingerDawg just because kids now a days as a demographic have a better quality of life then kids back in the 60s doesn’t mean you have to go off and rant about how humans have it better then in the past, consumers want the best service and product, and producers want money. Feed back is also critical, why would I say you have a ergonomically good phone when the price for said phone is way to high for the performance you’re getting. Also how do you expect a company to grow without feed back, because idk if you know this or not but not all feed back is positive.
The phone is already a year behind on specs. Now you need to wait another year to get modules for a phone that will then be essentially 2 years outdated?

No offence but which performance are You referring to when You claim that it's "5%" difference. I think the 845 beats the 835 by more than that in most "departments"... Though they perform the same regarding "native megapixel support" where they both reach 16Mp. But on the other hand the 835 is only capable of 30fps 4k Video, but the 845 can handle 60fps... So in that department the difference is 100%, not 5.
But the general point is simply that You pay for a phone which at present basically only has two selling points, "cool looks" (if that style appeals to You) and ""status"" (i.e. it shows that You have enough money that You can spend this much on a "rather ordinary phone") . If none of that appeals to You You are better off buying another phone...And You will get more for Your money.

Monster hunter series were the few major titles to fully support 3D, but pretty sure no one would turn it on after the first 10 minutes. 3D display wasn’t popular because it is very tiring to the eyes for any length of normal viewing sessions and it is especially harmful for children.

Ohhhh its like me beloved Evo 3d that I got like 8 years ago and still dig out from time to time to take 3d pics cause of the novelty of it, I want it lol, but as a backup-toy. FYI the evo 3d also had to use a separate app store for its 3d content also, but they even got gameloft to partner and make 3d ports of their other big mobile games specifically for the phone. This was when gameloft made the best mobile games(though they were knockoffs of popular AAA console games at the time) with no microtransactions or timers or anything. I have Modern Combat on mine and its baiscally like a 3ds, an old 3ds without the fact tracking though.

For 1300$ you could get a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. And it's a fantastic camera. An actual camera you could do wonders with.
Or you could spend $700, get a phone just as good as this then buy something like a $400-500 Sony RX-100. Then you have a better phone, a better camera and money leftover.

Indeed Red may hate Marques for this review but how can you hate a man for *not* misleading the public about your crappy product. This phone may have promise in the future But as a product for consumers TODAY, you as an leading Hollywood film guild camera manufacture should know best about releasing an inadequate product to the masses. This is basically shooting yourself in the foot. So regardless of what, Red cant expect any Tech reviewer to risk ruining their own reputation, for the sake of your company image, or special privileges. Now.. that said... if i'm to be analytical about today's modern smartphones then one could argue that insane price point is still a great deal. Todays premium smartphones are better than yesteryears desktop workstations. Think about it, a 2k oled display, OS, internet and cellular, music games motion sensors gps maps camera. all in one and in the palm of your hand, its truly amazing when you really think about it. And it becomes outrageous when you consider all those things and more in a good $200 chinese smartphone.
It is not crappy. It is just overpriced.
This guy really knows his stuff. I find myself constantly.impressed by his reviews.

tbh, when he was showing the 3d, it looked exactly like the new 3ds xl.
From what I've heard is very similar.
Overpriced and under spec phone. This should cost no more than $400. The worst part for me is the screen, which has to be extraordinary at that price level.
I saw so many reviews of the Red Hydrogen One! Only Marques was able to show it pop out!

Yeah my Evo 3D used to do that. I learned back then, it looks really cool on the screen. Never translates long term though. Like I cant upload it to FB, Instagram, etc. And eventually when the phone needs to upgrade, I cant even have the effect remain there because chances are the new phone won't have that 3D screen or be able to even read the 3D file type. Its a temporary function without any long term practicality and its such a bummer :(

A 3ds is limited to viewing orientation a phone cannot. Although as it is at launch the Hydrogen One is a flop. Do some research on the tech behind the display itself as it is pretty cool

I can't for the life of me figure out why they wouldn't partner with other 3D and VR efforts from companies like Nintendo, Google, Sony, Samsung, HTC, Oculus, etc. Maybe that would help make this phone worth owning.
Well, I must say it sound like a perfect example of what a name does for something. As Marques said, without the name it's just some mid-range Android phone with a cool, narrowly supported gimmick. But with RED on the back, it's a whole different game
its not a midrange, it had last years flagship soc. A midrange would have a 600 series chip. Those phones can barely hit 100,000 on Antutu.

The new 3ds can even adjust the 3d so you can view it at several angles, not just straight up.

Vinay B Tesla’s attempts continue to be bad, so maybe they should’ve. Quality control, production bottlenecks, reliability issues, repair issues, and all the recent skeletons coming out of the closet. Things look bleak for Tesla indeed.
frankySR21 they literally just turned profitable for the first time so clearly they have their problems in check.
@Vinay B stupid red fanboy. smh. Tesla's first reviews were really good. I did use this stupid phone for a week and all I could observe was eye fatigue.
