  • Last week, that mean & nasty Glenn Fricker guy said that PC was better for recording than Mac. I'm here to tell you why that is wrong, in the nicest, most family-friendly way! Many thanks to my Patrons for making these videos possible! www.patreon.com/smg
    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I was typing up a comment to reply here (basically "I agree, the problems with Windows are real, but fixable and once fixed, it just works")
As I was typing, Windows 11 did a force install of some new driver and rebooted. I had like five seconds warning.
That's Microsoft for ya. Where else can you have a 35-year love/hate relationship and still not know which is the truth? Good DOS. BAD DOS. Good DOS. GREAT DOS! Horrible DOS. Good DOS but bad Windows. Good DOS and Good Windows. BAD DOS, but good Windows. What's this? NO DOS? And Great Windows? EVEN BETTER Windows?

I can certainly understand the DAW loyalty, and a $1,000 premium is not a lot of money over the life of the computer. The real cost difference between PC and Mac ends up like $5/month, depending on how long you run your computers. Logic is the "killer App" for Mac musicians, essentially. I respect that. And budget-minded people can always pick up an older Mac, they are plentiful. Most of them have a 4k or Retina panel that is quite helpful for Studio apps. $500, $600, you've got a 5-year old Mac that has a good 5 years life left in it, or more. Even better if it's been cracked open already, and had the storage upgraded. All that said, I'm a PC guy 100%. There were no $500 Macs that could track 24-bits when I was coming up. You had to take some chances, troubleshoot, and cut a few corners if you wanted 24 bits under $1000 in 1998. But goddamn, it was so worth it. Peace out -

@@BearfootBob 100%! the thing with PCs is that they're more for gamers which games create almost a built in obsolescence to push tech further. You'll replace them every 5 years or so to play the latest games (aka more than just a GPU). Macs hold up longer unless you are doing video editing (that M1 max omg). I also agree on buying used! My first mac pro i got used and saved a ton.

Mac actually helped me a lot though I confess it’s my first. I’m just a humble guitarist, not trying to be an audio engineer for anyone but my own writing tool. I had driver issues and trouble recording/writing on PC for a decade. Honestly I’d get frustrated, lose interest in trying, get inspired then try again only to be frustrated. My adhd isn’t as much an issue when actually playing but once I refused to take prescription meth (adderall) I cannot sit still long enough to read tech support forums while also shelling out cash for software. Mac really did solve it for me. Was it be overpriced? Yep. Was it the best computer? Probably not. Are Glenn’s criticisms valid? 100%

Man, I remember when Macs were actually good for creative professionals. Way back in the early 2000s it was a great brand. Now it's just PC parts at three times the price, running MacOS, and fucked with in a proprietary way solely for the purposes of removing the ability for users to fix or modify their product. Soullessly cloning the exact same items every single year with tiny, unimportant changes all in the name of selling yet another marked up Shitbox to replace the one you already have.
Build PC, pay 30% of the money. And wow... you can even reuse parts to upgrade in the future! What a concept! I've been running my Ryzen motherboard for almost 5 years, and it's upgraded into a couple different processors. The case and power supply I've had for over a decade.

If I did want a laptop, I could just buy a PC and install my own sticks of ram and storage without voiding the warranty. As opposed to paying like $500 for a few GB of ram on a Macbook. I'd rather save a few thousand dollars and buy a sick preamp or compressor something.

    • @stpedro-ht9ng

Or the extremely efficient memory management of Mac OS which makes it hard to go above 16gb of ram usage even with intense scenarios. Just saying that, even though Mac aren't for everyone, they do provide an excellent value in the price/performance aspect nowadays.

Another point not mentioned... the system level support for plugins. All plugins on Mac are organized in a system level library that makes them easy to find. It can be a real mess on PC with a million different folders trying to hunt down VST locations when installing a new DAW. This also makes backups much easier to manage. The one big takeaway from all this? There are no ideal, or even good, choices here. Windows is buggy and messy, OS X is buggy and user-hostile, and Linux has too much choice and not enough software support (although the latter is changing, with the new focus on gaming). Everything is a compromise, you just have to pick the least-bad option for what you want to do.
One side note: the Linux sound subsystem is miles better than Core Audio on the Mac - it performs better and is much more functional. You get full native control over routing between multiple hardware devices _and_ applications. You just have to work a bit harder to get to that point. The only thing it's lacking is industry support.

Why am I having no problems recording/mixing/mastering on Linux? What am I doing wrong? I ask sincerely, I really have no problems. I just avoid plugins that are buggy, and you don't need a single one of them to finish a mix. I even switched to Pipewire for my audio server, to make my life harder (actually, to help developers catch and fix more bugs), but this shit is too close to be production ready, so we soon will witness Linux change its user space audio backend to something that rivals CoreAudio and ASIO combined in every single aspect, and that ain't joke: I already can use both my pro interface and home Bluetooth stuff as playback speakers just switching outputs in Harrison Mixbus or Ardour on the fly, just using a dropdown in monitoring section, so I don't need to render the song to hear how does it translate to cheapo hardware; and that's only the tip of the iceberg, just adding to overall level of comfort when mixing on Linix.
