love the vids great to see an everday bloke who holds down a full time job and still has the commitment to renovate a car in the british weather ,better than the yanks anytime
Where the copper brake pipe goes across the axle, cut a short piece of rubber pipe and wrap it around the pipe where the tabs attach it to the axle. Otherwise those clips will eventually wear into the copper pipe. Thats how they were from the factory.
I`m watching this with headphones on, as Mrs watches telly. She keeps looking at me strangely as I PMSL at the contect. BRILLIANT. I hope you`ve got something lined up ready for when the VIVA is done.
I've gotta say Steve I'm absolutely loving this channel of yours... I grew up in the 70s 80s doing all my own old school mechanics on similar period cars as yours. Every job you work on is just such nostalgia for me... None of this modern plug it in diagnostics , this is real hands on stuff...
Cracking job. If you need a hand with anything you can give me a shout. Just live in Wardley. Our lass is best mates with Julia. Worked at the uni together.
Thank you very much! A few people have said that about the varnish, I think I'll just have to persevere with a few different things trying to rinse it. Thanks for watching 👍
Progress is slow & steady. Work can only be done when time allows. (due to shift work) Been there. Done that for 35years. For me.. I would have put some foam / insulating packing between the brake pipe and the metal securing clips. To stop any vibration/movement which may cause future pipe failure. See you in the next one. 👍👍
Greggs started out originally as Greggs of Gosforth (a small bakery in Newcastle) after the second world war and is now a national chain. Newcastle's other national chain is the Northern Goldsmith jewellers (well known for their golden naked lady clock) which now trades nationally under the brand name of Goldsmiths.
I live 30 miles north of London in a tiny village called Ickleford, halfway between the small towns of Hitchin and Letchworth. There are Greggs shops in both of those towns.
More great content. With regards to the tank varnish, I had this with my Calibra last year when putting it on the road. I used Astonish grease remover then pressure washed the insides. Job done. I know they'll be lots will shoot me for doing so, but it certainly worked for me. Cheap and cheerful. Love yer channel bud....keep going.
Thank you very much, appreciate it! I'll keep that in mind, I've got a few things on the way to try but will give that a go if they don't work. Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Great job! I have just finished recommissioning a '74 reliant scimitar 5a which had been off the road for 19yrs. Out in all weathers too. Had the same with the fuel tank. Filled it up with white vinegar and left it for a week. Flush with bicarb of soda, then water and leave to dry. Brakes looking good.
Thank you very much! Appreciate it. Ah the reliant scimitar, my brother loves those. Cool cars! Thanks for the tip, I'll add that to my list of things to try😀 Thanks for watching 👍
@@RetroRebuild yeah I love it. Don't throw the vinegar away - I used it to soak all the other rusty parts. Be careful on the more delicate ones but otherwise it is cheap and very effective.
I just found your channel, really enjoying it! I had a friends rusty fuel tank that had sat for years, it had to be cleaned out. I put a bunch of nuts inside the tank along with vinegar. I shook the tank with everything inside several times. I drained the vinegar several times until it was clear. Cheers from Canada, Rob.
Not sure yet, too many options 😀 though still lots to do on the yellow Viva even when shes on the road. Can't wait for the test drive, just hoping she makes it back home 😀
Yes man 🥳 brakes done and off the list 💪😎 glad i haven't had to deal with any imperial metric situations with any cars i have owned lol greggs is nationwide i think, tons of them up here in Scotland 😁 look forward to the next one as always 👍
Metric one end and imperial the other, wtf, never come across that before, no wonder there was much head scratching, never seen the inside of a tank painted either lol, great vid as always.
I know, tell me about it! 😀 A few people have said its just old fuel, but looks very much like yellow paint too. Thank you very much and thanks for watching 👍
Really enjoying the journey with you getting the Viva back on the road - much more interesting than seeing some exotic being restored on a huge budget 😀
Good vid if it's some numpty that put paint in the tank the best way is to put paint thinners in a few times and give it a good shake around each time to wash it out.
I pumped my bike tyres up this morning ... which in many ways is also an achievement! And Greggs is everywhere, with their terrible pies, blanched sausage rolls and a ham salad sandwich that had only the white part of a lettuce as "salad".
Fantastic, we are finally 🙌 😀 sorting out remaining brake lines LF and Rear. Sorry to learn LF was different ( metric) whilst everything else was imperial, any number of things could have happened over the cars life. Well done on the brakes. My son and me about to do all that on a '65 Daimler, similar condition to your Viva. He's going for the same, what I call, "Old War Horse" look. Can't wait till you sort out the front passenger side indicator. It's driving me mad...lol.

No need to worry Greggs are all over the country and so we are all getting FATTER together lol 😂, but northern ones give bigger portions by the looks of you 😂, kidding Ofc. Well done on getting brakes 👍🏻 and the gunk in tank I think is just very old Petrol turned to varnish ? Never easy to get it all out .

Gregg's started out as a proper bakers in the North East . Now they're UK wide . even making it into Northern Ireland, its just steak bake's, miserable sausage rolls doughnuts and coffee nowadays far cry from their heyday in the 90's . With every type of fresh cream cake you could imagine.. Great you got the brakes done eventually,..must feel good to get them finished after the ups and downs.. wonder was the metric fitting re- reamed sometime in its life.? Mid seventies a funny time for metrication no one knew for sure what was staying and what was changing .
Yes they don't have as many cream cakes as they used to back in the day! 😀 I think you could have a point with metric/imperial fittings of the 70's! Thanks for watching 👍
Your varnish in the bottom of the tank needs dissolving with a strong solvent, you could try acetone, toluene or xylene but if not available empty 1 or 2 cans of carb cleaner in there, you can speed their effects up with a couple of handfuls of coarse sand/fine grit (though there is risk of damaging the tank filter) to abrade the coating of varnish ---- finding you need metric ferrules isn't uncommon as the brake manufacturers changed threads in the late 70's as vehicles became more EU orientated.
Thank you mate, I am going to add this to my list! 😀 Yes you have a point about the 70's and the EU - a pain for me though! 🤣 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Not trying to be a smart ass, but the "E" clip on the I think the rear drivers side looked like it wasn't fully seated, might be just the camera angle. Around 7.33 it could just be the camera.

Nice job on the brakes, That yellow colouring inside the tank is old stale petrol that's turned to varnish due to chemical reactions over time.
