Rifle skills: boresighting and zeroing

  • Having learned how to set up your scope correctly it’s vital to check that your rifle is zeroed regularly. If you are an occasional stalker, you should check zero before every outing; for frequent users, every other week is probably the rule of thumb. Of course, if you suspect that shots aren’t hitting your point of aim, then re-zeroing is essential. It’s also worth it if you have bought a new batch of ammunition. Even with the same brand, different batches can produce slight variations.
Plenty of rifle Shots treat zeroing as a test of their skill, which is a mistake as this will give you a false “reading”. It’s important not to be too frugal with ammunition at this stage. The more groups you shoot, the more you can establish a consistent result and find the correct setting and ammunition.
    Bore-sighting
You’ll want the rifle to be as steady as possible, so this is best done from the prone position or from a bench. Use rests or rice bags to adjust the rifle’s position so that there is as little movement as possible - rice bags are excellent as they will allow you to move the rifle into position by “massaging” the bag.
With all zeroing, it’s important to remember that this is not a marksmanship exercise. In fact, you ought to remove as much of your influence on the gun as possible. Remember, this is purely a way to ensure that your rifle will perform to its best standard.
    Zeroing
Take as much of your influence away from the rifle when it comes to zeroing so, as with the bore-sighting, you should get the rifle into a rock-steady position, where all you are doing is squeezing the trigger and cycling the bolt. American scopes have minute-of-angle adjustments, which means that there will be four clicks to an inch at 100m, while European scopes are calculated in millimetres, so take three clicks to adjust an inch at 100m.

Those Blaser rifles are exceptional, from everything I've seen. I love how they have designed the bolt. Great video!

Very helpful. My new tikka t3x was shooting low and to the left. With two Bullets I was able to adjust the point of impact at Hit centre every time

I dont know my increments, such as MOA or Milliradians, However I had a similar scenereo as the last group shot, with my MRAD scope, but I came down the one click and blew out the bullseye at 100yds.

Nice scope mount on the Blaser. Nothing compliments the appearance of a classy looking weapon like a beautiful scope mount. My gunsmith set me up with a picatinny rail on my newest rifle and I find it unaesthetical. I wish I had insisted on something less,, 🤔 army-esque

How long should one wait between shots, to prevent the barrel from getting too hot?

You're only firing a few shots, the time it takes to adjust between is enough.

great video, what specifications are on that scope? I'm planning on putting either low or medical scope rings on my mosin Nagant, I have an rsi scope mount and I'm wondering what kind of rings I should get in order to mount the nikon prostaff 5 scope I bought

Jesus Orozco It makes your zero ranges longer, when using high rings. Example: AR users optics are mounted about 2.5" above the bore, so they benefit from a 50-200 yard zero. A hunting rifle, with the optic mounted about 1.5" above the bore, is more like a 50-130, or 35-200 yard zero. This is because of the slight difference in the starting angle of your bullet. Keep in mind tho... High rings will make your bullet have a higher midrange arch, because of this added starting angle. To help this make sense, imagine that you have your scope mounted 12" above your bore(now, that's some high rings!). You would be holding your rifle at about the top of your stomach. Can you see what kind of angle that your barrel would be at, when zeroing at 50 yards? It would be aiming towards the sky! This would more like a 50-2,000 yard zero. lol. I know that's rediculous, but it helps get the point across. I hope this helps... And for people that don't believe me... Go to your ballistics calculator, and change your scope height, by an inch, then look at the results. It makes a difference!!!

You used 6 rounds where 2 would have done it. Especially with that precise rig. Cool vid, love the country!
