Rifle skills: the four principles

- Bradley Bourner explains the four fundamentalsteps towards becoming an excellent Shot
There are four marksmanship principles: aim, hold, sight and shot. These can be seen as the fundamentals of accurate shooting - and they must be utilised every time. They are easy to practise at home - dry-firing a centrefire is not going to damage it (though it will damage a rimfire). The more these steps become part of your routine when you get into position to take a shot, whatever the target, the more you’ll find you can achieve consistently accurate results.
PRACTISE AT HOME for best results
Place your rifle correctly and get into position behind it.
Take a firm hold of the rifle, so that you are controlling it.
Put your cheek to the cheekpiece and ensure that you have the correct sight alignment.
Make the rifle ready to fire and squeeze the trigger.
Don’t move your head but work the bolt and, maintaining your point of aim, squeeze the trigger again.
1. Relaxed position.
2. Good trigger control.
3. Suddenness of firing moment.
4. In target shooting, keeping it the same position of the body and the rifle grip.
Great video. Simple and clear. really helped me on the range this week. Started hitting the bull consistently at 75 m- thanks a million!
You are the first shooter that I have seen that is able to not even blink when your weapon discharges and I have seen some awesome shooters. Great job.
I do the same. Learned to cycle my bolt and hand feed the next round all without losing my sight picture. All nice and slow. Talk about repeatable shots.
I was thinking the same.
Matthew Nobby is correct. It’s vital that the MP’s are applied in the correct order. Well done MN!
One tip I've picked up over the years is keeping your eyes open throughout the entirety of the shot. A lot of people reflexively close their eyes when the shot breaks, and it's extremely difficult to break that habit.
On my ARs, I run top mounted red dots above my magnified optics. This serves two purposes. Primarily, it's for CQB type stuff. Basically anything 150 yards and in. Secondarily, though, it offers fast target acquisition. I scan for targets with my dot, drop my head behind the scope, and because both optics are in line with the bore, you'll at the very least have that target in view of your scope, if not centered in the reticle.
Great video!
I like Ryan Cleckner's advice: Focus on the Recticle, NOT the target.
Steady Pressure on the Trigger.
Everything else be as consistent as possible.
Clear and concise with brevity ,perfect
Principle #1: Live in a country where you can own a rifle.
In california they are working on taking away everything
Country or state
You can own a rifle in the UK. It's one of the few firearms that are easy to license actually

22s r for wusses lol
22s r for wusses Shooting my .22's often, has made me a MUCH better shooter. Plus, it's cheap to practice with. I disagree with your name. Besides, a .22 will penetrate ANY skull on Earth. The name is kinda funny, tho. lol
He’s not?
Lol same here
Good tips, thanks
Thanks, good stuff!
He's definitely ex-military with the terminology used.
1: the position and hold must be firm enough to support the weapon
2:the weapon must point naturally at the target without any undue physical effort
3: alignment and sight picture must be correct
4: the shot must be released and followed through without any undue physical effort ?
Thought that's the order 😃
it is, Scottish doing things there way again! *just waiting for the backlash ahaha
Matthew Nobby you military?
Matthew Nobby thats correct
@Warfire where i heard it from
Thanks for saving my time...,
This is really good mate. from Australia :)
what
Dry fireing is not ideal chaps,id strongly recommend snap caps...brilliant vid.very clear.veary sound.well done.
Nice video, well done - subscribed.
Excellent video! What brand and caliber of rifle are you shooting?
Exhale; and upon the moment where all the wind is out of your lungs...squeeze the trigger. That is the main advice I can offer. It works. When I grew up I used to shoot using this method with great results. Do not jerk the trigger, but slowly squeeze the trigger over about a half second time if possible.
Piano Man42 also with the exhale try time it with your heart beat so you can shoot between beats as that is when your body is still
Step 5: you got to be giving it all she's got.
Expanding it to top 6 principles could be more beneficial. Bipod loading, shot press/hand position, bolt manipulation are all equally as important as the 4 listed. Bipod loading paired with body position could kill 2 birds with one stone too.
Do you try and "time" your trigger break, with your sight alignment? Or, do you make a slow, steady pull, until the trigger breaks on its own(surprise break)?
Excellent class. Thank you.
hello ShootingUK, and thank you for the video :)
May i ask, which comb raiser/cheek pad it is, that you are using in this video ? :)
Kind Regards,
Claus

@Ty Krommenhoek Flinching means that you have good reflexes.
Blow back from the suppressor ?
did you "load" your bipod, i couldnt tell, seemed like your gun jumped a lil each shot.
Jake Gustafson that’s what I was thinking too. basics eh!
Makes sense.
How much rearward pressure should you have on the rifle butt in to the pocket of your shoulder?
Good rifle
What camo pattern is that?
That accent got me through the whole video.
I’m waiting for the English version to come out.

You have my permission
British Army Marksmanship Principles. Do you need Permission?
Just a shame people can’t shoot anymore without the aid of a bipod and telescopic sight. One should learn unsupported shooting first. That’s where you learn true marksmanship.
Are all sniper rifles operated in the same way as this?
No, some of them ( like Barrett M107A1 ) are semi automatic, which means you can pull trigger without moving bolt first, which means you can shoot faster.
What rifle is this? Mauser 18?
"Ulmost like ur fallin asleep, awnd settl in be'ind tha roifle"
Step:1 Be the 1st on the range.
Step:2 Be the last one to leave the range.👍👍
Step :3 No such thing as "Perfect". Only Perfection. 😀😀👍👍👍👍👍
....only perfect practice 😉
This reminds me of Pirbright
Hey im a bigginer what is a good rifle to start with
Ruger american or savage axis in .223 is a nice cost effective option.
22 bolt action. Cheap ammo, you'll learn proper technique and won't be tempted to just keep shooting, one shot after the other, without thinking about each shot.
"Bigginer"
Hi bigginer are you a bigginer, lmao I'm also a bigginer, there are many binnigers in the world for instance me, a bigginer and you a bigginer
What kind of rifle is that used in video?
Mauser M12 dunno which model exactly, next to it was a Blaser R8
I thought you were supposed to hold your rifle against your chest and roll with it into position like they did in the Tom Cruise movie "jack Reacher" LOL
luke thru the scorp
How do u keep your cheek on the stock without ramming yourself in the face with the bolt?
Lol mate, its really not as long as you think😂
what time of rifle is the thumb hole rife
Blaser R8 Professional Success. Pretty overpriced plastic gun.
Great gun
I always thought dry firing damages the gun... Especially the firing pin...
@Rich Mancil ah thank you... Didn't knew that...
Most rim fire weapons ought not be dry fired. Almost all centerfire rifle may be safely dry fired. There are exceptions to everything. Richard Mancil is correct, you can buy dry fire caps, but they aren't required.
@@konagolden4209 ahhhh okay thanks for the kind answer... Still learning about guns...
Is that a 308 or 300 win mag?

Irish!
REBELTELE he sounds Scottish to me
King C Yeah I'm thinking Scottish
dont we have guns then!!!!!!
Are you one of those Americans that think we're not allowed firearms in the UK?
Principle #1 Always wear safety glasses when shooting any firearm…
Were you n the armed forces in the United Kingdom ? I served thirty years in the United States Army almost twenty in the Ranger Regiment.I retired in 2010.I trained with British soldiers on a few occasions and fought along side them as well. Fine soldiers. Are citizens allowed to have firearms in the UK .Great video thanks.
Gotta have a licence in UK to own a firearm, l got mine in 2012, gotta join gun club, police checks, it's bull shit. Surrendered mine, not worth the hassle.
Air rifles can be used without licence if no more than 12 ft/ lb. Above that you need a firearms certificate, which is also needed for other higher powered rifles, shotguns, etc as stated by @6lr6ak6. Lot of hassle.
Not to mention lying down for the shot makes you a lot harder to hit with return fire.
He is talking about hunting. Animals usually don't fire back.
Brits doing shooting videos???? .....SUBSCRIBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there an English version?
Macmillan is talking sense
Cool accent:-) Is it russian, scottish or else??
What rifle is he using?
my guess is a Mauser M12, either that or a Mauser m18
Step 1 is "Don't buy a rifle from the Blaser concern".
2 years later... Still feel the same?
WTF his collar bone instead of shoulder?
I could've watched someone else's video... but your accent makes this more interesting lol
Principle #5: You have to look like Putin for extra soviet accuracy
Rrrrrrrraifle
That tige is going to shoot us. 'un, 'un like you' life is in denga
SCOTLAAAND!!! :D
J
that guy pretty much walks on to his ear, looks about 700-800 ft away 1:27
P.s, im jealous of your lush green lands... can i move to scotland is they decide independence away from the uk?
I also think you've missed a couple of points... Make sure your rifle is tucked so much in your shoulder, not only your cheek! Your grip needs to be great and so does the amount of force you are reducing the recoil with it being so pushed back into your shoulder/collarbone and soft tissue.
What accent is this and how do I learn to talk like that?
What about breathing. How should i breathe
Now, you just discovered you cannot shoot from prone with bipod but instead you are going to shoot with sling support? That’s when you realize the idea is to transfer the stability of the ground into the position and that there are only three factors to a solid position: bone/artificial support, natural point of aim, and muscular relaxation. The elements describe the relationship between shooter, gun, and ground: stock weld, grip, non-firing hand, elbows, and butt to shoulder..
My thoughts exactly. Everyone seems to use a bipod these days, which really is cheating.
is that a scottish vladimir putin?
Bobby Hill no thats the original Putin the russian one is a knockoff
Oh god, what accent is this? Scottish? Very hard on non native english speakers;-)))
Finally!! A Russian explaining a gun 😂
is this guy scottish?
I didn't think you could have guns in the U.K.!
you can own guns but there are heavy regualtions on them and you need a license that is relatively tough to get a hold of
Mark Johnson the requirement for gun permits in the UK, the GB and Scandinavia, is that you are not a psyko, or formerly punished for violent crimes.. background checks..
It’s proper strict.
Fellows, you left out the breathing cycle. Shot to be released in the natural pause between the exhale and the next inhale. Breath in deep, force it out, breath in deep, exhale naturally and now you have approximately eight seconds to get the perfect shot away.
A bit of psychology. As a civilian using a rifle or shotgun in civilian settings, the correct term to use is "firearm" NOT "weapon". Propagating the term "weapon" in a civilian arena, inculcates an offensive mentality/attitude, purpose and use for a firearm. This is not conductive towards the responsible ownership and safe use of firearms by civilians (just as using human-shaped targets for civilian pistol shooting is unacceptable).
The term "weapon" infers an offensive, aggressive, combative purpose and usage. Therefore, as an offensive piece of military or paramilitary equipment, the term "weapon" is both acceptable and applicable ONLY within these organisations who's members are trained in the offensive/defensive use of weapons in line with their duty statements.
Ex-military personnel are notorious for this (incorrect) interchangability of terms by virtue of their training. However, as former soldiers - now civilians - they should possess the discipline and brains to train themselves out of such habits, just as easily as they were trained into them in the first place by the military.
Not being a prude, but please get your terminology right for the setting. 👍
Idle Onlooker was it the Word Police or the Bureau of Offensiveness that determined it was “incorrect” to interchangeably call a rifle a weapon or firearm?
@@jordangarrett9400 Not any "word police" but do some research into psychology and criminal psychology and then you might begin to understand the subtle - but significant - difference/impact between the two. 😘👍
I will pass on the hurt feelings research. Out of curiosity, since I’m ignorant to the workings of being constantly offended by nonsense, would it be incorrect to refer to a knife as a weapon and not a cutting instrument? What weapons are allowed to be called weapons? I don’t want to upset anyone with any future mean speak.
Damn you hit me with that grade A insult you’ve been saving for just the right occasion. Great arguments, you win and I promise to never call a firearm a weapon again because your research says so.
first
Wallace!..Wallace!..Wallace!!!
low key be looking like Vladimir Putin
How does anyone learn the basics of shooting when the equipment includes a bipod and a telescopic sight? Basics, boys. Fundamentals. Not shortcuts to nowhere. I've never seen a marksman who was trained with a bipod, but I have seen plenty of lousy shots who started life with a bipod and were never able to shoot without one.
