I really cannot compliment Ryan Cleckner enough. I am humbled by his knowledge and his instruction style. Ryan exudes confidence and demonstrates he has nothing to prove and possesses a genuine desire to impart understanding to others. Ryan does not communicate as a know-it-all but rather as one who is comfortable with his education, experience and practical understanding of the information he communicates to others. Ryan demonstrates a true desire to help others grasp information that is second nature to him. Great job Ryan and thank you for you willingness to teach us what you know and understand. Please, keep up the great work!
lmao my grandfather taught me how to boresight rifles like that and it is hilarious to see people's faces when I do that and a range especially when I go to shoot and I hit right on target. old school some of the best ways
It works. Gets you on paper immediately. Then a few more rounds to dial in. I bore sight in my basement using reflective dots on old cardboard. I leave roughly 1 1/2" inches between bore and scope in elevation because of the close range inside. Always on paper (pretty decently) at 50 yards at the range.
This is the best comment I have seen to any of my videos so far! Knowing that you and your family enjoyed shooting together makes it all worth it! Stay safe and keep it up.
I have watched all Ryan's video's several times, taking notes then applying principals at the range. The single drawback to this? Everyone brings me their rifles now and asks me to sight them in :) Thanks for the knowledge and instruction .
Ryan Cleckner, My 11 year year old son has just become a Boy Scout. He decided that one of the first merit badges he would like to earn is the rifle merit badge.Unfortunately,I have only a limited knowledge of good shooting technique. I purchased a 10/22 for him and have watched several of your videos. We will also enroll in the local range's basic rifle classes. I look forward to spending time with him on the range. Thank you very much for taking the time to teach the fundamentals. Ben Barker
THANK YOU MR. CLECKNER! So awesome! Its refreshing to see information presented in such a candid straight forward fashion without piles of death metal playing and baditude. Thank You for relaying your expertise to us mere shooting mortals!
its honestly amazing how far technology has come . ive done both methods the one seen in the video and with a laser bore sight and both are so close to each other i cant tell the difference. i have alot of respect for the older generation who had no option but to use this method (by eye looking down the barrel). my grandfather to this day uses the eye method and hes more accurate when it comes to hitting the paper and his grouping. thanks for sharing
Ryan, Our family is new to shooting. After watching several of these NSSF videos together we bought our first family .22 rifle. We were able to understand the concepts to zero in a rifle. We went to the range, zeroed in the rifle, and had a really fun afternoon together. THANK YOU!
Man, thank you for posting this!!! My dad was having troubles FOREVER with his .30 scope (dipshit brother adjusted it without telling anyone)....so at least now we have a solid idea of how to get it realigned.
I'm admittedly new to the world of shooting rifle (specifically precision)... as my background is primarily in shotgun... and I must give you top credit for a very complete and clear to understand method you provide your viewers in understanding all mechanics of shooting, scope mounting, MOA, and zeroing your scope, etc.. Many thanks for making the learning so much easier. :)
Note on bore-sighting. The turrets must be dialed the same direction that the scope is off, to center the reticle. If you're high/right, you must dial high/right to center the scope. Also, The Leupold-type mount, where the front ring is twisted into mount, allows the rear mount to take up the gross windage adjustments, saving space inside the scope tube for elevation adjustment.
As a newbie to rifle shooting utilising a scope, I have to say, this is the best, clearest explanation of setting up a scope that I have yet seen. VERY well done, some people are natural teachers, I guess.... Thanks so much :)
I use the same technique bore site at 100 meters use live round and usually can hit a jam jar lid with first shot I use a solid rest though feels steadier when shooting off a bench I have learnt a lot of great tops from this guy really knows how to explain things simply and accurately
This was another great video that clearly and concisely demonstrates the important skill of zeroing a scope. I wish that more shooters would watch this video before going to the range. I've helped a LOT of people who didn't have a clue how to zero a scope. Many of them waste a box or two of ammo while apparently twisting knobs at random. Note that Ryan's rifle was zeroed with four rounds, and it would have been three if he wasn't making an instructional video.
Thanks great video. Your final comment on recording the mechanical zero is excellent advice. I hadnt thought of that. I had been using another method which was alot more complicated. Brilliant, thank you....
Wow, really like your way of explaining! We recently are looking into long range shouting after a few tryouts at 100mtr. We like it so much but know nothing so we were looking to learn and found these video's, much appreciated, thank you. I'm now in a stat that I will mount my scope to be myself instead of hand it over to the gun shop, better I think and so much more fun! I also ordered your book, can't wait to start reading! Many thanks and keep up the good work.👍👍🏻👍🏻 M & M from The Netherlands.
Another awesome video. One can easily tell that Ryan has perfected his teaching technique by being a scout sniper cadre because he explains things in way that even a grunt can understand.
Robert Mannarelli Interesting because I spent the majority of my first two years at French Creek with 8th ESB, and honestly don't recall ever hearing that. It's an old school way of boresighting, and I did it as a kid before joining with my Marlin 30/30 & Bushnell 3-9x40 scope.
92naz32 HOLY SHIT xD felony creek!! 8th ESB is down the street where I was with 8th comm. when I read your reply I almost thought you were going to say 8th comm haha
You can use a laser bore sighter with your scope, which helps a lot with zeroing your scope. It's good to have a bubble level on your rifle scope, then you can also know that you are laterally level to zero your scope also.
You are the best I’ve seen for explaining this bro . Thanks .I ve been telling everyone too this Ryan cleckner guy is the man if u want to learn the easiest best way to shoot long range .
lol, the sound at 1:58 is his boot toe slipping off the shooting mat onto the rocks (you can see the immediate tension change on his shirt), it's a noticeable sound. But I'll agree it sounds exactly like a let one off.
Great video, used this process to site in my Ruger American in 270 this morning and was shooting groupings I could cover with a quarter at 100 yards inside of 20 minutes. I've never been as confident with a zero as I am with this one. Thanks!
You have two things that can effect your accuracy. Your first shot, a cold bore shot might be different from your following group (not in your case). Other is your barrel might shift due to heat, but you should be able to still make groups, just your POI shifted. You might have other issues if your getting some flyers such as inconsistent ammo, your flinching, your stress/tired, etc.
I like to shim my mounts to get as close as possible before putting any clicks on the scope. I also wait for the barrel to cool down before each shot to make each shot a cold barrel shot as groups move when the barrel warms up.
I'm in agreement with rustedghost. Thank you Ryan. finally, someone professionally delivering answers and more, for what inquisitive, humble, ethical hunters and shooters seek. Regardless of your experience level.
Thank you very much I’ll try do exactly like you did , and by the way watch minutes of angle again !! Your videos is the best on You tube thank again !!
I just wanted to say thank you for the content. I appreciate the opportunity to review some of your content to get my mind in the right place before I spend time slinging lead
your moa will change when you sight in your rifle from a laying position or from a sitting position or from a standing position...also he makes no mention of changing your bullet weight when you sight it in to when you actually use your gun...always use same ammo that you sighted your gun in and when you actually hunt
Sure, but it's always better to zero your rifle in the most stable way possible. If you have a vise that's made to shoot in then that's the best way to zero your rifle.
Ryan Cleckner - US Army - Sniper School Instructor. Check the previous NSSF videos, he figures rather prominently. Similar bags should be found most any tactical gear store.
This guy is very good , I watch he’s others videos and he make very easy to understand how to scope works !!!! THANKS I REALLY APPRECIATE AND EXTREMELY RECOMMEND THIS VIDEO !!!
I use the one shot method. I bench sight to zero then at the range I fire one shot and dial the cross hairs to the bullet impact point. I go through procedure early in the fall with all my rifles.
Excellent video series, I expect to watch these several times for reference, one thing I was really hoping you covered was eye fatigue, I notice I have a really difficult time maintaining focus after shooting for a little while. Thanks anyways for the great info and especially for your service!
Great video!! I’m new to the sport and this video was very informative. I’m looking forward to improving my accuracy with new RPR chamber in 6.5.... 1000 yards here i come!!!!!!
I just bore sighted my rifle using that exact method, then I verified with a laser, and then I took my first shot at the 25 yard line and was on paper. Shot a total of 8 shots and was zeroed and ready to bang steel.
Me and my bro hit a 12 inch target at 500 yards today with our 303 British using iron sights. That was fun today. Our rifles are set out to 500 yards .
Wasn't that last 3 shot group supposed to be in the center of the target? If the point of aim is be center circle and your shots are a little to the right and low how is this perfectly zeroed? I'm confused.
Man I really find your videos very entertaining and helpful. I'm new to scopes and was having a few issues trying to sight it in. Thanks for the helpful videos.
That is it fellas . U don’t move the crosshairs in a scope which is why people say it moves opppsoite . You move the point of impact . So move your bullet to where u were aiming . If bullet hits lower than aiming point then the direction is up because u want to move the impact up to where u were aiming . Same goes for left and right wihich doesn’t usually need messed with once zeroed it’s best to use mil dots imo for the first cpl hundred yards .
Great video. I've been shooting all my life but nobody has ever been so clear on how exactly to sight in my rifle. I shoot a 308 Norma magnum and bullets cos over $55.00 a box so now I'll save money after transporting my gun when I sight it in. Last year cost me a box of shells.
Ryan, Is it true you should try to keep adjustments in middle of total adjustable range. So, how do you know if you are in middle of range on a new scope? Is it hard on a scope to run it stop to stop to figure out where the middle actually is? If off by more than 20 MOA from middle is it better to shim or adjust large amts of elevation or windage?
I've always wanted to know the same thing. I've also heard that you should never run full up/down without running it left/right as well. At least in my Barska owners manual that what it says. There's a big difference between his Vortex and my Barska tho.
I Like how he uses a Vortex and some rifle you cant see the brand. Just goes to show you that training and skill are all you need to be a competent shooter.
Cool, I ordered a Remington 700 SPS .308 the other day. You seem to like rifle, so that bodes well for me considering your previous and current vocation. Thanks for the great information in your videos.
10 year old video and still one of the best on the tube thanks to Ryan's great teaching.
Ryan's teaching style is what all of us want to emulate - Clear, Simple, and Easily Remembered. Thanks Ryan.
this guy is an awesome teacher
I agree, he is amazing
But 60 moa at 100 yards ? Think I'd be shiming the scope some.
I really cannot compliment Ryan Cleckner enough. I am humbled by his knowledge and his instruction style. Ryan,
I have watches several of your fantastic, no BS instructive videos.
I just wanted to say thanks for a job well done!
thank you for being the first person to mention sliding the scales. I've been so confused from others lacking that final step. very informative.
lmao my grandfather taught me how to boresight rifles like that and it is hilarious to see people's faces when I do that and a range especially when I go to shoot and I hit right on target. old school some of the best ways

What...no laser??
@@johnstewart8849 that’s why it’s called bore sighting… no need for the POS laser, it’s a waste of money.
I just done this on my last trip to the range.
Can we agree that sometimes “old school” needs to be the ONLY school?
I learned more about scopes and ranging in 20min then in my whole life. This is pure gold video material. Thanks for sharing with all of us 👍🏻
This is the best comment I have seen to any of my videos so far! Knowing that you and your family enjoyed shooting together makes it all worth it! Stay safe and keep it up.

Hands down best "how to" on setting up a scope for dummies. Everything explained clearly and in layman's terms. Great job!

This is how training should always be done and his experience and professionalism shows that. No BS, just good solid, usable instruction.
I can't see this being explained any better. Thank you.
Man, thank you for posting this!!! My dad was having troubles FOREVER with his .30 scope (dipshit brother adjusted it without telling anyone)....so at least now we have a solid idea of how to get it realigned.
this is the best collection of videos for shooting rifle on the whole youtube..
Learned more about long range shooting. Set up in one night than all the years I have owned my rifles. Thanks a ton.
I know this collection of videos is older but they are definitely the best instructional videos, period. Clear, concise and informative. Thank you.

that's a vortex viper pst it comes with shims so that way you have a zero stop and don't have to do the 60 1/2 moa turns
John Vasquez I believe mine didn’t come with shims

92naz32 haha we call it Barney style in the Marines hahaha
Robert Mannarelli Funny, I spent six years of my life in the Corps during the "80's, but never heard of "Barney style." When were you in?
92naz32 2012 to present sir! really???? it's a pretty big saying. maybe it's a Camp Lejeune thing haha

Wow. Thank you.
Lamo i was hoping I wasn’t the only one who heard it lol
lmao the grunt when he says Sure xD
VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND SIMPLE EXPLANATION, THANK YOU RYAN
I bought the guys book...'Beginners guide to precision rifle shooting'... a brilliant book to dip into... full of useful stuff.👍

I have learned so much watching your videos. If I ever need help because I'm getting old, these are reference videos.
Thank god there is some one who really knows what they are talking about, great video. Cheers Mike from Australia 🇦🇺
Best tutorial I've ever seen, thank You, greets from Poland
Well and thoroughly explained. Many thanks for demystifying this process!
Great video! I appreciate the detailed explanation for the steps to zeroing the scope @ 25 & 100 yards..
I'm in agreement with rustedghost. Thank you Ryan. finally, someone professionally delivering answers and more, for what inquisitive, humble, ethical hunters and shooters seek. Regardless of your experience level.
Watch this video and understanding MOA. It’s was like a bolt of lightning when I understood MOA. My fclass shooting has improved.
Thank you very much I’ll try do exactly like you did , and by the way watch minutes of angle again !! Your videos is the best on You tube thank again !!
I use a Vietnam era Frazer Volpe boresighter USArmy ordinance and it is awesome. You dont even need to look thru the bore at all.
I just wanted to say thank you for the content. I appreciate the opportunity to review some of your content to get my mind in the right place before I spend time slinging lead

Thanks for the video, now i can make more videos with a scope rather than with iron sights!
Great video!! I’m new to the sport and this video was very informative. I’m looking forward to improving my accuracy with new RPR chamber in 6.5.... 1000 yards here i come!!!!!!
I am with you, got the same rifle in the same caliber.
I just picked up my new RPR in 300 WM, going to the range soon!!! One in 6.5 or 308 is next!!
Another excellent video Ryan, thank you again.
Excellent. First time I've really understood the process. Thanks!!!

He could try a click up but he's 98% right on & any breeze, humidity etc will almost never be perfect.
Warsrogue Bet that sheep grazing 1000 yards away feels better now.
Man I really find your videos very entertaining and helpful. I'm new to scopes and was having a few issues trying to sight it in. Thanks for the helpful videos.
This is awesome!!!! Thanks for the tip!!!!
Great video. I loved how you stuffed so much easy to understand info in such a short time frame.
Top shelf stuff, sir! Best scope zeroing video I've ever seen.
Thank you for providing this information for free
These videos are the best I have ever seen. Well done guys!
You're one of the best teacher.

Great video my friend. Thanks for posting it!
Liked it!! A good explanation of zeroing in simple form!!
Your the man, no matter what level.
Ryan,
Is it true you should try to keep adjustments in middle of total adjustable range.
More good stuff...there's a lot to learn...pls keep it coming! Thanks for sharing.
That was a very nice tutorial. Thanks for sharing it!
Discovered this channel not too long ago. Loving it!
i like the mechanical zero concept. it can help if you have one scope between different rifles
Sean I don't know if that will work because you would have to mount the scope exactly the same spot. But maybe. Have to try it?
Thank you Mr. R. Cleckner!
Great stuff!
Good video. Answers so many questions I encounter as I learn more
I Like how he uses a Vortex and some rifle you cant see the brand. Just goes to show you that training and skill are all you need to be a competent shooter.
I'm use to having a zero stop on my scopes.. but I like the idea of knowing the mechanical zero. Thanks for the tip.
WOW! great Video! Thanks for posting! Short, sweet and full of info!
great video. helped me a lot with my Remington 700!
He’s great. Just bought his book. Awesome. Thanks MR C.
Pretty darn slick, thanks for the education lesson,I'm definitely subscribing
Cool, I ordered a Remington 700 SPS .308 the other day. You seem to like rifle, so that bodes well for me considering your previous and current vocation. Thanks for the great information in your videos.
Great educator! Love his vids!! Have learned so much and shoot a lot better. Thanks.
