  • Real Landscape Photography Tips - In this video I offer 26 real-world Landscape Photography Tips. Tips that really matter!
    A couple of weeks ago I created a post on my Facebook Group asking for people's tried and tested Landscape Photography Tips. I was amazed at the response. 101 comments later...
    I sifted through them and compiled my favorites. In this video, I read most of my favourites out to camera and then commented on them. Did I agree with them, do I use them and of course would I recommend them too.
    I made the video in a light-hearted way. Of course, I've taken them seriously but I've added my own little twist to them. Life is too short and al that :)
    They're in no particular order but my favourite 2 tips are at the end of the video!
    Grab a coffee and let's do this!...
    Agree with any of the tips or maybe you could suggest another?
    Let me know your thoughts in the comments box below!
    THANK YOU
    Gary

    Hey Gary, I was the photographer in the house next door on Skye during that very wet and windy week. Never got a chance to say hello, but was interested to see what you got in those “challenging conditions”! Unfortunately I had to leave on the day the snow came. Shooting hand held was definitely the order of the day in those winds though! My tips from that week, “keep wiping the lens” and “use the weather you’re given” my best shots came from the worst weather, worth all the drenchings.

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  4 роки тому

      Hi Andy. Would love to have said hello, sorry we missed each other. Challenging conditions indeed. You're so right, and as Alistair's tip said "if the weather gives you lemons, shoot lemons" 🤣😊😁 I'd love to see what you came away with

    Good Stuff! Tip 1 is basically like 'A joke isn't funny if you have to explain it'. Of course tho with abstract photography this doesn't matter so much as it probably won't have a 'story' but a good one for more 'standard' photography.

    Speaking of so called UA-cam experts, which there are many and have a huge following. It's the images that count not the constant talking or equipment tests. I consider my self lucky to learn from a darkroom and film, though I use do use digital now. Having said that, the photographer who constantly produces the goods with stunning images in my opinion, is Gary Gough. Thoroughly entertaining too.

    Great video and some great tips, thank you. I’d be interested to hear your opinion - whilst to self critique your images is good, there is a danger you might not spot potential improvements as you will only see what you can see. You might think your image is fantastic when actually it’s pretty average. But, if you get a better photographer to critique your images,they can really point out opportunities to improve.

It's funny how people see stuff at the end of the day photography is subjective and you should do it for yourself and it o ly becomes an issue if you need to make money from it. I wrestle with commenting on a photo I've taken. I feel sometimes people need a push to get what you're trying to say with a photo. People's brains are so cluttered, they need some reining in to get them to focus and see your point. But another way to look at it is maybe you are only playing toward the people that are getting it without the comments...

    Just an observation, there are not many UA-camrs shooting landscape that actually get in or up the mountains it almost always shot from the roadside.

      That's because it's hard work :) Besides, wouldn't you rather live in a crappy house overlooking rather than live a castle looking out to crappy houses?

    Regarding the last tip - always buy black, it's less noticable. It also helps to buy from your local camera shop, they understand the rules.

    Hand held landscape photography, I wish, to start with you need a steady hand, and a reasonably fast shutter speed.

      @GaryGough  4 роки тому

      Obtaining a fast shutter speed whilst out shooting during the day shouldn't be a problem. If in doubt just raise your ISO

    Not really a landscape specific tip, more of a beginner tip.
    Always have at least one spare memory card, which you keep in your bag.to protect against the day when you get your camera out and realise your card is still in your laptop at home. It happened to me when I was on a boat in the North Sea. I was totally screwed.
    I called myself a few names that day.

    Re 1st tip. I think that people who don't take photographs don't always understand the elements that create an effective image. As with many aspects of "Art", we do need a little bit of education.

    Our landscape is blighted with seika spruce woodlands ‘ devoid of color ‘ sown to close together for maximum profit with little or no life in the understory’ looks the same regardless of the time of year’ bring back our natural wild woodlands and give wildlife a refuge and help the planet as well ‘ we owe it to our future childern

    i understand using a phone camera to help find and visualize a comp but refuse to elevate my telephone to the status of a real camera, instead try using a comp/ viewing card like charles cramer and the master ansel adams, you will find comps much faster than your overpriced iphone :)

    Oh, the number one tip could be easily rewritten to be non-sexist (because it is true in any way and form): Never reveal the true cost of your equipment to your significant other! Well, it might not help due to the internet and Amazon …

    I dont think that best comment is sexist. It appliest just as much if you're female and/or you have same sex partner.
