  • Don’t drink and shoot! Well, not during a Schützenfest in Germany. Here, it’s tradition to gather for drinking, shooting, and marching every year to celebrate this 900-year-old custom. So what’s it like to join a German marksmen’s club for the world’s biggest shooting festival taking place in Hanover, Germany? Our reporter Brant Dennis went there to find out.

As a fellow Aussie you have to somehow admire how the Germans can mix drinking with so many activities and it not turn into a complete riot - they have a very mature relationship with alcohol that I think other countries can learn from.

Absolutely 👍🏼 While not totally immune from drunken boofheadedness, it’s considered VERY bad form. FAR worse than in Australian or US culture.

The lady didn't explain that "Fein-Korn" very well.
"Kimme und Korn" means a notch and bead sighter iron sight. "Fein" in this case would mean precise or accurate.
Doesn't hurt that "Korn" is also a word for strong spirits made from cereals.

Was about to say that. I suppose it was due a lack of English skills or just beeing nervous.
In German she would have likely be able to explain the tounge in cheek of the chant.

As an American, it's pretty shocking to see an adult man cover his ears for a bb gun😂

@dynamiteboss5434 oh, really? I've shot air rifles since I was about 6 or 7 and I can assure you that air rifles shoot pellets, also called bb's. You should probably do some research before commenting. She even says, "the air rifle cannot kill you, but it will hurt".

@@tyi6566 well ok maybe but in Germany I can assure you that it’s not a BB gun so I’m sorry I just thought of it and my words were pretty dum since I don’t really now what you call sth. in a different language, my fault. Btw I’m shooting air rifles too since I’m 11,12 ish since that’s the legal age in germany

When an Aussie can't keep up drinking, that is some serious drinking.

possibly, that especially in the countryside it is very regionally divided. Every small village has its own shooting club and its own shooting festival. It's a festival where the whole village comes together and you know everyone. The local stores are also closed because everyone is celebrating. This aspect is somewhat lost, at least in Hanover.
At least in the northwest with us it's like that.

its nice and sure its tough, but seems to have more in common with kyudo zen archery in japan then actual shooting, seems to have a rich tradition and comradery but if I am going to shoot give me my good shotgun and point me to the range and lets make a wager, something I can hunt with, or we shot arrows 5 arrows 5 rounds, or we do 3d targets just like one would hunt non this fancy wrist brace fancy visors and counterweight that looks like a toilet plunger on the end of the bow. but thats me.

I'm happy to have my Sig Sauer P226 (German) for home defense, and I became very proficient with the Heckler & Koch MP5 (German) when I was in the military. I would love to own a Walther P22 (German) for sport shooting.

Guns and drinking: How Germans celebrate this old shooting tradition 1403pm 8.7.23 i thought: a visual effin stockhausen and the rock band drunks with guns... the comingling of drunks and guns sounds amusing but, no doubt, isn't...

Dude its an air rifle 🤣 so Australia is even wimpier than Canadians and that is saying A LOT ... consider yourself defeated should anyone choose to invade. Love the fact Germans are keeping their traditions strong against the tides who would wish they would end or change.

I'm from Germany, and I see the tradition of the Schützenfest as completely unnecessary, alcohol is drunk wherever possible. That only does harm instead of benefit, I'm in the voluntary fire brigade, there are also events where alcohol is drunk and I condemned that too deeply, alcohol is a danger to everyone's health and will never be anything else. it helps in some situations (fuel ethanol, or as a disinfectant but definitely not as a drink! . In my opinion, the alcohol is not seen as a danger and only very few point out the danger or ban the liquid poison completely. It has to be completely be banned , forever as food , or at least restricted in the most extreme way like other drugs , it 's nothing more than a life - destroying drug .
