Limp Bizkit is the band everyone loves to hate! Why did Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit get so much hate, and how did it help Limp Bizkit? Was Woodstock 99 Limp Bizkit's fault? What about the Slipknot and Eminem beefs?

Being a white boy growing up in the bad parts of Jacksonville, and being a huge Korn fan, I instantly loved Limp Bizkit and still do. Also, my first cousin Scooter (Ronald) is the lead singer of Cold, which were Fred's first band he helped get going. I met him once as a kid while spending the night at my uncle's house and they would jam out in the garage, I would sneak out of my room and sit by the inside garage door and just listen to them...I remember the weird smells coming from under the door (it was weed lol), and I remember Fred opening the door and me being scared of getting in trouble, but he just ruffled my hair and said something to me like "better get to bed before you get caught" and went to the restroom, while I ran back to my room. The next day, I was wearing a hat and I remember him taking it off and putting back on backwards and he told me "that's how you wear a hat dude". I still wear my hats backwards to this day lol

Oh, most definitely filled with just cheesy lyrics, but it was fun music. Every now and then, there'd be a line or even a whole song that wasn't cheesy and was a legitimately good thing. Lyrically, I think Take A Look Around and Rearranged are two songs where Fred pinned some great lyrics and told a great story throughout the songs. Easily their top two songs to me. Counterfeit is a great song too and it blows my mind that the label had to pay for airtime. Sour is another great song. And then there's all the straight up built for moshing songs like Break Stuff.
Their last two albums weren't all that great, but there were a few good songs on both of them. If they're having fun with it though, that's all that really matters in the long run.

I've seen Limp Bizkit live more than any other band I'm a fan of, around 15 times. I met Fred just walking through the crowd at a show called Localbazooka put on by WAAF in Boston. He never changed, he was always honest, he was never fake, he loves the fans & he has a giant middle finger for anyone else!

I agree that being controversial helps a lot with achieving fame and that if we had more bands like Limp Bizkit today rock would be more mainstream. But we have to consider the 90's when the mainstream wave of rock was fronted by incredibly down to earth people who had a lot of positive messages, regardless of their own struggles and drug use. They had strong but wholesome personalities and the music was really good, those things combined resonated with a lot of people.

While Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Slipknot and the Family Values tour definitely brought the larger-than-life shock rock drama to the mainstream, sooner or later that drama bores people, and people migrate *back* to the simple guys with jeans and t-shirts playing guitars onstage. Limp Bizkit are enjoying a resurgence and a new appraisal from younger fans, but in the mid-2000s their career's decline was a harsh one. I remember when Wes Borland bailed on Fred for some other project, and Fred put out this extremely rough "diss" track that sounded like something a kid would make. I was sure we were never going to hear from him again at that point.

I am from Argentina, so I mainly spent my pre-adolescence years listening to classic rock music from my own country. It was until, I think it was 2000, when the song from Mission Impossible came out that and I got into Limp Bizkit. I bought the Chocolate starfish album and remember liking it a lot and being amazed by the heaviness of it (I was 12 and it was my gateway into “heavy” music). I listened to that record a lot with my friends at the time and ending up getting the rest of the discography and loving it.
Since I am not from the USA, limited news, mainly through MTV, reached to me about the band back in the day, so I was not aware of all the hate towards Fred Durst. Always thought he was an outrageous kind of person, but in a cool way and really admire Wes Borland (I remember being really sad when the news broke of him leaving the band).
Eventually, I got older and more snobby about music, so I started listening to other bands, but I guess it was thanks to Limp Bizkit that I got into Linking Park, Korn, then Deftones and after that the 90s Grunge/Alternative scene which ultimately led to discovering my all-time favorite band which is The Smashing Pumpkins. I guess that Billy Corgan in his own way, is the Fred Durst of 90s alternative rock music, but with immense talent for songwriting in comparison (someone should make a video about that?).
In the early 2010s, Limp Bizkit came to Argentina for the first time and even though I was happy about it, I was a fool and did not attend to the concert. Maybe next time they come. I will come by and rock with this younger generation that seems to love them. I have to pay my respects!

Man 1997 to 2003, the only era in time where you could watch MTV and see a Hard Rock/Metal band making the crowed go nuts while hot chicks are doing a catwalk in bikinis.
I wished I was a teenager at that time
You really start to see why no one cares about Rock and Metal no more when you’ve got Metalcore and Deathcore bands screaming in the mic in a dark place with led lights and guys dressing in boring black clothes with beards.
That’s partly why Emo couldn’t connect with more people in the mid to late 00’s, why would you want to listen to guys that dress like girls that constantly whine about not being understood, why no one understood Emo’s just look how they fucking dressed back then, like fucking weirdos. Granted the Emo bands didn’t dress boring, but they went the completely opposite way of dressing like it’s the mid 80’s again, dressing like Boy George, Adam Ant and Cindy Lauper, but those bands failed to realise it was 2006, and not 1986.
This is where Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit understood the youth culture coming up in the late 90’s, most kids were dressing in sports and baggy clothes, most kids wanted a band that was energetic music to trash their rooms to, just look at Eminem when he first arrived in the mainstream in 1999, Eminem and Limp Bizkit basically had the same audience at the time.

It was dark and dirty. The ceilings were extremely low and they had exposed pipes on the ceiling. They had to lube the pipes (pun intended) to keep people from grabbing them.

I graduated from highschool in 2001, so I have so many vivid memories of this time period in "pop culture". At this point I had jumped head first down the rabbit hole of punk & hardcore within the last 2-3 years. Yet I still watched MTV, listened rock/alternative radio and absolutely enjoy a good amount of what I heard. Around this time the big local rock station ( 99.1 WHFS based out of Washington/Baltimore)would put on these huge one day festival or as they called it WHFestival. It was general admission, ticket cost $20-$25 I'm not joking. And believe me you can think of any big band of that era they were on the bill. (Enough of my ramblings) so in 1999 they held two festivals one in the spring (per the normal) and a fall edition. The headliner of that Fall Edition was none other than Limp Bizkit. Now I was never a huge fan, but never had this hatred that others had. I'm being a 100% sincere when I say that they were fucking awesome live. Absolutely killed it.

    Just a personal anecdote:
I saw Faith No More on their “Album of the Year” tour and Limp Bizkit were the opener. We arrived during LP’s set and the crowd was absolutely brutalizing them. This was before they had much notoriety and Wes Borland had kind of a teased hair look and a corset on. They did sound kind of rough, but as a guy who has played for a tough crowd, I could definitely empathize. They were literally booed off stage.
Mike Patton proceeded to berate the crowd during their own set for their behavior and repeatedly FNM broke into the song “Highway Star” by Deep Purple as a kind of punishment. It was pretty awesome.
Years later, I saw Buzz Osborne do an acoustic set and he told a similar story about Mike Patton berating a crowd for booing his opener and my life felt complete for a brief moment.
Anywho, that’s my story. Carry on.

At that time, the music festival venue was in a bit of chaos due to a typhoon just passed, Limp Bizkit became furious and showed extreme disrespect towards the stage crew. They occupied the stage, continuously hurling vulgar insults at the staff, throwing around equipment, and even dousing the event photographer with water. Great breakdown and analysis.
I do think that to ride the "hate" train to success, one has to do it _right_ though. What I mean by that, is that one has to ACTUALLY have a strong amount of fans that support them while _using_ critics to promote/market their business. A lot of people try to use hate to build their brand but don't actually have a strong enough fan base (or musical talent) like Limp Bizkit or Nickelback to ride that train and they end up just being buried by negative reviews. A perfect example is Trapt. Chris Taylor Brown can type all the hateful tweets and responses he wants on his band's Twitter, but Trapt only has one hit song out of _eight studio albums._ Limp Bizkit has been nominated for 3 Grammys, has 26 singles, and 40 million albums sold.
Limp Bizkit and Nickelback have both been the target of disparaging attacks and they would admit that they aren't the most talented musicians in the world, but they are fully aware that they aren't actually that bad and they're able to "play into" the negative perspective about themselves because they know that they can _actually_ appeal to people who might like them.

I was a little young to understand the drama in the late 90's and early 2k's, but this is amazing. I didn't know so much of this went on. Just makes me love the band more. Amazing video bro, I'm off to find some of these old interviews.

Idgaf what anyone say... it maye it cause im a Floridian who also was a teen when they were on the top a thur game, but they were sick.
It was goofy (music and their personalities), but that was most the appeal. It was hard , scrambly, just a helluva great time. Ever one loved each other, and the shows were fire. They were sooo hilariously comedic on stage but also did shock rock stuff, and STILL had a tight band with an original sound. Ima say, "ya just had a be thur", cause honestly, u probly had to for the kost part... But those shows a thurs we went to ever week or 2 for those yrs. Were just rowdy, crazy, yet fun af in not a hateful way. It was all love, Dude.
Just as i write this , ima bouta say do yall remembered the "flush em to hell tours" (?). ..& just then Finn mentioned the giant toilet.
See...comic gold. They knew what they was doin
[& im basically a person who mostly goes for real hard metal.
Anyone this entertainin thow, well they got me, idc what genre.Lol.]

I’ve always respected limp bizket despite the hate. I get the hate, they have a lot of cheese, but they are talented. I’m glad to see people revisiting them and liking it.
If people will start liking spin doctors again I’ll be fully redeemed.

Bro, you left out a killer detail! When met Korn and was tattooing Fieldy he kept talking to them about his band and their band and the music business and stuff and he got so distracted he misspelled the tattoo on the back of Fieldy's neck.

Not me. Im seeing them in London this August with my best friend and im pumped for it. I like LB. Did back and still do now
The fact that me just liking LB makes metal elitest and gatekeepers angry makes me love LB more

This actually surprises me, seeing you cover LB in a relatively positive light, especially considering your review of STILL SUCKS and listening to like 4 seconds of each song and saying the whole thing is terrible (even though it's actually really good; you just gotta listen to more than 4 seconds of each song 😂 ). Seeing you put your own personal bias aside to show the history of certain bands that have succeeded in the face of adversity (another example is your coverage of ICP) has definitely gained my respect.

Just to help you understand, the edited version of my review isn’t going to show me listening to the entire album in real time.

Fair. Still, it's refreshing to see you do a history lesson on them in a respectful way. I've been seeing you do that with lots of artists that you don't necessarily like, which has brought me back into being a fan of yours. I loved most of STILL SUCKS, so I was admittedly a bit salty about your review of it, but then again, I can't expect my cup of tea to be pleasant to everyone, and that's fine. If there were never any differences of opinion on things, life would be boring as hell.

I only got into them as a teen during the 2010s and actually got to go on stage as a 12 yo during Faith. I didn't know them as well, but I'll never forget how kind Fred was after I came up to him for a hug. It's only in hindsight when you realise how legit they actually are (for me then especially) since you are really taught to only cringe about them

I'll never understand the hate that came from a band that never even took themselves serious. They were and are still a fun loud and rowdy band.

If any band in history gets the title of "love to hate" for me, it's indeed Limp Bizkit. I think Fred is a terrible vocalist and lyricist, a decent screamer, and a grade school-level rapper backed by a solid band (hey, kind of like RHCP if Keidis could scream), but I'd be legitimately disappointed if they broke up. For all of Fred's shortcomings, the guy's got stage presence for days and a weird charm to his immaturity. I only actively like maybe a handful of their songs, but I hope they stick around to annoy me for years to come, lol.

loved them growing up, was a little embarrassed to sometimes, many years later i can see how they really had a perfect mix of catchy music, controversy, and just giving people what they want, i would call them legends.

Limp Bizket did for music what Isaac Newton did for science. 10,100, and even 1000 years from now, Fred Durst will continue to be the centerpiece on the Mount Rushmore of music.

My favorite band. 🤷‍♂️. #90sBaby. I found LB when I was 12-13 years old. (Currently 33) and they've been on my playlist since. Three dollar bill ya'll, all the way to the recent "Still sucks" album. Love it all!!
