That’s incredible that such a legend goes along the Union Pacific. A piece of history rides through wyoming. It’s just incredible it rides the rails at speed again
HA!! No question about it. If the 3985 could blast up Archer Hill with some 8,000 tons at 35 mph (with power to spare), then you can be guaranteed 4014 could pull that manifest all by its lonesome.
@@stephenroberts4895 Big Boys were designed to pull 5 1\2 miles but limited to 3 miles.Big Boy wouldn't even notice what those diesels are struggling to pull.
@@tugaman1000 You need to look at the Mighty challenger attacking Archer Hill with 143 fully loaded cars without cracking a sweat & 844 pushing a fully loaded broken down freight train uphill both without diesel assistant effortlessly .Diesels only build power faster than steam but when steam build produced gobs more torque than steam
@@tugaman1000 Comparing individual locomotives, that statement is wrong. The basic function of diesel locomotives is Constant horsepower, variable torque; Whereas steam is Constant torque, Variable horsepower. So, while down below 20 mph (say on a long hill, like the old SP (now UP) Cascade line) a diesel excels over steam. Yet regarding actual raw pulling power, once the train is started, a steam locomotive will outpull the diesels any day. The only things that actually spelled the end for steam was labor and maintenance savings and diesels could run much longer prior to servicing.
I have seen and deleted the comments talking about the intro music. I understand it shouldn’t be used in a professional type video. But if you’ve seen the cringe that is my previous videos, I don’t claim to be a professional either.
The intro music was great, you had the sound of the engines in the main part so it was fine. Two beautiful engines and some great filming. I am over in England btw can we borrow it? Grins.
Your very first shot is something we only thought we would ever see in historical films! An amazing achievement to bring "The Last of the Giants" back to life.
It does. It has more than enough power to pull the train. Federal safety regulations require the diesel for dynamic braking. The diesel also provides electricity to the passenger cars, and as an emergency push/pull in case the steam engines break down.
@@GSMSfromFV The reason I was sceptical was because Big Boy wasn't making any chuffing sounds or any other steam related noises like 844 was. However when I looked at other videos I heard the chiffing sound much clearer, now I know that it's actually running on its own power.
I think it's mainly as a backup. They use is for assistance in breaking and for hills. Not like it's really needed but they do it anyway just to be safe.
The diesel’s main purpose is to provide power to the passenger cars. Otherwise it serves as a backup if the steam engines have a problem. In this particular case it came in handy as 4014 had a steam leak and I heard there were problems with 844. So the ACe was doing a considerable amount of the work when it arrived in Rawlins.
Do you have to immediately jump in the car to get to the next spot? Great job! Fun little video! And it’s amazing to see a mile of locomotive and then two miles of cars! So cool to see this amazing piece of history in motion!
two enormous and beautiful beasts doing what they were made to do. it doesn't get better than that. regards from the UK.
Outstanding footage. That last scene overdubbed from the movie gave me goosebumps. Very nice.

Nice touch with the "Last of the Giants" audio clip at the end.
The big boy is still the coolest thing on rails!!
When the whistle on 4014 blows it just gives me the goose bumps especially when it echoes.so awesome

Seeing those two brutes in action puts a renewed theme to double header. Just watching it on video gives me goose bumps.
Beautiful! A fitting tribute to Last of the Giants!
Notice that the mixed manifest at 2:25 required 3 diesels. How much you want to bet 4014 could haul all that single handedly?

Diesels will out pull the steamer every day of the week.

I'm glad that UP 4014 is back in action. If it were alive, i bet it would glad to have it's wheels running under it's own power again.
Nicely done video. Thank you and Union Pacific! *****
What a come back BIG BOY!
Among the best videos I've seen of 4014 reincarnated and on the rails!
Great shots. You got to see, hear, smell and film history run by...envy much? Yes. The audio overdubs gave the video some character. Good job.
The proud in the pride of the u.s. is back with a 4014

Good gracious, you did a superb job. You timing was outstandind, was well edited, the ending have me goosebumps.
Have enjoyed the whole parking lot to mainline operations process, can't wait to see both of them without a diesel in the consist.
Big Boy sees oncoming Diesel with freight.
Big Boy and Up 844 To Trailing Diesel: Hold Our Beers
Big Boy sees coal train and wants a snack, only to be denied.
@William Shearn Yes, his drink is in yellow tank wagon behind him
The ending the audio from Last of The Giants was perfectly inserted for the right video.
4014 to 844: No need to whistle, I'll handle it
844:Sure!!!! Go right ahead!!!!
Awesome places and a big thumbs up from me :)
Greetings from Poland :)
Great job from Melbourne Australia
incredible video, some really great shots. Very nice ending. Welcome back big boy!!
Bis jetzt das beste BB Video (👍 ab 03:40.....), vielen Dank 😊
Love the Thomas and friends music

6:15 the absolute best.
Fantastic video - Thank you!!!
Epic video and shots man, subbed
5:56 *Im not crying I swear*
If I was in the cab of one of those, I'd be hanging out the window too.
If I was in the cab I would have to consult with my Dr. after 4 hours.
Great video I look forward to day 2 and day 3
Unfortunately, due to time restrictions in my personal life, I did not go to Days 2,3, or 4. However I will be back to Cheyenne when it returns.
@@The_Iron_Cowboy oh sorry to hear that but at least you got it on the first day
You know, with the 4014 hitting the rails again, I feel like the 1940's are back!
It's a pity that in Mexico those classic trains are no longer in circulation.
The Big One is just aching for a 3 mile length cars to show diesels whos the Alpha Boss of the rails.
2 monster steam engines pulling some passenger cars would be comparable to a Semi pulling a empty jet ski trailer.
You the guy from Chicago who was diving a white explorer? We chatted for a while at Hadsell!
SD457500 that wasn’t me I’m afraid
Absolutely beautiful video I am so so happy that 4014 can once again see her iron trail!! By the way is that 4014's original whistle?
Nice!
I'm very sceptical about big boy running on its own power.
Your comment makes no sense. It's clearly running, so how is it not "running under its own power?"
It does. It has more than enough power to pull the train. Federal safety regulations require the diesel for dynamic braking. The diesel also provides electricity to the passenger cars, and as an emergency push/pull in case the steam engines break down.
@@Edyth_Hedd Because of the diesel.

The 3985 came through my area in 2008 without a diesel backup. I hope to see the 4014 do the same.
Are you the first user to put Thomas music in UP 4014 and 844 run to Ogden?
👍👍👍
steam in the after life
Diesels might as well Quit now cause now that UP has their 1.2 Million Pound Steam Engine back.
La Legenda Big Boy hehehe
why do they have the diesel locomotive?

And don't forget the 8937 support locomotive too...beaut SD 70 ACe...
Too bad they didn't have the diesel loco 4884 or 1996 there instead. Or the 6936 Centennial. Having 4014 and 6936 at Ogden would've been a blast.
Too many location choices on the shaded side of the tracks.
When you are chasing it as it goes, you don’t have many options. Being caught behind the 3 mile-long Pacing Squad doesn’t help either.
