    Never had a locomotive raised from the dead garnered more attention than this Big Boy. There were tens of thousands of people who came from all over America, even the world to see this once in a lifetime railroading history come back to life. I am still waiting for my model train crazy friend to drive back 2000 km back to Edmonton, Alberta from Cheyenne Wyoming.

    This remarkable video gives us in the UK an appreciation of the vast expanse of your wonderful "outback" and how you are all tracking the exploits of the historic icons 4014 and 844. Many thanks indeed posting for us all to enjoy

      @@bazzab1000 10,000 tonnes might see her stalled, depending upon where she is. In her stomping grounds of Ogden to Wahsatch she was rated at 4450 U.S.tons. Later on when moved to Sherman Hill they were rated at 5800 US tons from Laramie to Buford. The preponderance of loaded tonnage on the UP was and remains eastbound.

    Are both engines being used to power the train or is 844 running in light steam? Anyway this would be impressive to seen in real life. Especially as a Kiwi this is like two of our largest steam engines on steriods with a third chucked in.

    • @maghost_rider5698
      @maghost_rider5698 5 років тому

      Going by the few video's that have been posted it does look like 844 is doing most of the work and 4014 is just using enough steam to make a little bit of noise. Don't forget 4014 is barely even run in.

    • @MrLordwrecker
      @MrLordwrecker 5 років тому

      The 844 is a beast in her own right, but yeah it's doing most of the work. The diesel is off.

  • @macuser2
    @macuser2 5 років тому

    Please forgive my ignorance, but I notice that there is a diesel locomotive appearing to assist the 4014. Why ? And knowing current EPA guidelines, what the 4014 run? I’m guessing not coal...thanks in advance for any help concerning my questions.

    • @billbondie554

      Burns used motor oil.
      Diesel is used in dynamic brake to simulate longer train.

    The L H front engine piston gland 4014 is blowing again they seemed to all settle down the other day

    • @williampower2333
      @williampower2333 5 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, both front cylinders have leaked from the start and have never ceased! When there's no blow-by, the throttle is closed; watch the stack, no impulses from the blast pipes! She must work, periodically, as the steam injects steam oil to lubricate the parts. There's a video of her departing Wamsutter that clearly shows this. This leakage is continuous during the forward stroke & there's no streaks of steam oil on the rod. This suggests that the inner perimeter of the packing is sealing on the rod BUT the outer perimeter, that abuts the stuffing box, is not. There's blow-by around the whole circumference! There's something amiss with it's geometry; out of round, tapered, rough pitted surface, etc.. Out of sight, on the footplate, a Zoroastrian morality play is unfolding, the conflict twixt Good [lubrication] & Evil [steam cutting-erosion] ! So, when you hear the bark of her blast pipes- Thus Spracht Zarathustra! This is the true Drama!!
