  • I had bloodwork done to test Cystatin C. vs. eGFR and creatinine levels - to figure out if I have kidney disease or not. The results were shocking to me. Last test was in January and eGFR was 55. MORE⤵

    Hey Holly, I'm so happy for you. Geez you live such a healthy lifestyle that it was hard to believe those previous results, who knows what was doing on there, but seems you are perfectly fine. It's always a relief when you get some good health news. That bug appeared at 8:54, I was like '' there's a bug!!! Isaac, thank you!!! That is too funny about the bug - I did not feel it until it was behind my ear! Thank you for such a nice comment. I am really glad I was able to get that test done (before the coronavirus situation escalated) and try to just move on and get retested someday. Overall, I just don't trust that test. Love your diy hair videos. You seem really intelligent and I love how you're trying to understand your lab results and take agency over your health issues. I would send your doctor this video, so they can talk to you about what information you got right and what you got wrong. Almost everything you said highlighted a misunderstanding of yours related to renal (kidney function) and I think it would benefit you and your followers too more thoroughly understand the topics you're talking about!

    Congratulations on your results! This may sound rudimentary and like broscience but someone would only have to look at you to know that you have really good kidney function! You look incredibly healthy. I read a quote a while ago that said- "some things that can be measured don't count, and some things that count can't be measured". As you mentioned, there's so many factors that go into good health and certain tests like eGFR may not show the whole picture. Having said that, achieving positive test results can definitely be reassuring, so good on you for continuing to seek clarity.
    I recently had an eGFR calculated as 64 based off high creatinine levels. As I eat quite a lot of beef (which is high in creatine) and have quite a bit of muscle (which uses a lot of creatine for performance), I decided to get a Cystatin C test as had heard this can be more accurate in assessing eGFR.
    My Cystatin C came back in the normal range and gave an eGFR of 114.
    I live in Australia where Cystatin C is not a routine test and I had to go through 5 doctors to find one that knew where I could get tested.
    Thank you for your videos and spreading such great info. If it wasn't for videos like yours I would still be thinking that my Kidneys were close to failing. Hopefully this test becomes more common around the world as another way to measure Kidney health.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Steve, thank you for such a nice comment! I am so glad your Cystatin C test came out so great too! And, that's good you never gave up and got the test you needed and also the reassurance. Pretty crazy you had to go through 5 doctors to get that test done. I am not surprised. I hope more doctors become aware of the issues with the eGFR test and then properly test their patients. I too eat a lot of meat and think that has contributed to my creatinine levels. Anyway, so glad you found this video and could share your story too. A lot of people are out there worried about their results. Hopefully doctors can become better informed. :)

    I'm happy to hear your numbers were significantly better this time around. That must make you feel so much better. I can also understand that it's hard to believe tests when you see such different results. The idea of re-testing, to me, seems ideal. I'm a "give me all the info" kind of person so I can process it. If money is not a huge factor, I wonder if you should do two testings going forward. Use this same lab for both tests. 1) First one, do what you normally do, take your prescriptions and regular supplements and don't fast. 3) Second one - 30 days later. 1 week before test...take only prescriptions - no OTCs or supplements. And, fast for 12 full hours before bloodwork but staying well hydrated.
    To me, that gives you better control of your results. Whatever you decide, I'm holding good thoughts for you and your health. 🌞

      Thank you so much for such a nice comment! I know my regular insurance would have me covered to get the test done (with both) again whenever I choose probably. I will try to wait many months from now to test it again. But, we will see. I agree about doing it in a really similar way to this time! If my regular insurance won't do it though, I will go back to this place. I will probably go back to this lab anyway to do other tests if needed. :) Thank you so much for your kind comment!!!

    Finding videos like yours was a huge relief. I had very similar numbers to you. Turns out that my creatinine numbers have been consistently high for years and most recently 1.57. I am more muscular than the average person naturally and when I work out regularly I get even more muscular. They don't tell you that this directly affects your Creatinine levels and thus your eGFR. My primary care failed to mention this and just referred me to nephrology. The wait for that appointment was unbearable so I paid for my own Cystatin C test and the result was .80 which puts my true GFR well into the normal range and far from Kidney disease. This experience kind of makes me wonder why they even use creatinine levels for this when it can be so inaccurate. Any way, thanks for the video.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much for sharing this and I am really happy to hear you figured it out and your levels are fine! The creatinine also seems to go up when you eat more meat and take certain supplements (and if more muscular like you are). Doctors should be more knowledgeable. This is ridiculous that you and I thought we were in kidney failure. I was just looking through my old doctor's notes looking for a medical record and I saw what my doctor wrote at the time I did this video - she said something about how we can't change the fact that we're aging and my kidneys are failing to some extent as a result, and there is nothing we can do about it. Great chat doc. Very inaccurate and discouraging.

      Creatinine is biased based upon body composition. The National Kidney Foundation has an eGFR calculator. You can use creatinine or cystatin C or both to determine eGFR. It also takes into consideration your gender, race, age and body weight to give you the best assessment of your kidney function. I have strength trained me entire adult life and am more muscular than average. I was relieved to see my eGFR is much better using cystatin c.

    Acidic foods have an influence on kidney function because your kidneys work harder to excrete excess acid in order for the body to maintain proper blood PH. Other factors play a role on PH as well such as breathing, anxiety issues, stress, etc.. Either way a healthy body does a great job of maintaining a very fine margin when it comes to blood PH and it has to in order to keep you alive. The kidneys are also responsible for maintaining optimal electrolyte balance and if you are deficient in one mineral then the body must get that mineral from other sources such as bones which again puts a strain on the kidneys. Considering the person has healthy kidneys you can eat a diet rich in alkaline foods such as greens and take magnesium and it will significantly increase eGFR. Either way, eGFR can change dramatically throughout the day based on the types of foods you eat. The more acidic the foods are the more strain on your kidneys. eGFR is just one thing we look at when it comes to kidney function. For example, a person with a high eGFR shows that that person has great kidney function, correct? NO! Not always! For example, a person who has high fasting glucose levels along with an elevated A1c indicates the kidneys are on overdrive trying to rid the body of excess glucose. You see this a lot in people with diabetes and if it goes on for too long then you see a drop in eGFR. At some point the kidneys fail and then the patient is put on dialysis. If the fasting insulin level is low in combination with elevated glucose then you are either prediabetic with insulin resistance or depending on other factors you can be full blown diabetic. Diabetes can easily be reversed as long as the pancreas is pumping out insulin in the presence of glucose. The fix is to increase insulin sensitivity by improving glucose uptake at the cellular level within the muscles! If the fasting insulin remains low in the presence of elevated glucose then that person has a pancreas issue in most cases and it's because they suffered from uncontrolled diabetes for quite some time. I mention all this about diabetes because it's a primary cause for kidney failure among adults and it's so easily preventable and even reversed if caught on time. There are other medical ailments that can damage OR impair kidney function such as high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease that would cause restricted blood flow to the kidneys, heavy metal toxicity, autoimmune disorders, and even low thyroid function, but too much to go over in this comment. Also, stay clear of NSAIDS like Ibuprofen because they can damage the kidneys! A lot more to this, but thought I would state the basics.

      Yao, thank you! Too funny about that bug! About the ckd, I have had an eGFR around 60 (which they consider stage 2, almost stage 3) for two years. But, since 2015 my eGFR numbers have been crazy fluctuating - sometimes 60, sometimes 70s, a few times higher. It's been really confusing. The doctor was pretty sure I had it and that there wasn't a mistake. I thought it was a mistake somehow and was hoping that. I am glad this time the results were so good. I just don't trust these tests very much. It will be interesting to get tested again.

    I'm so happy your kidneys are better than it seemed!!!
    I got a blood test done a month ago and my creatinine levels were lower than normal. Aparently that might be that I'm loosing muscle... 😰
    Anyway, I was kind of worried watching your video, couse you say they calculate eGFR from creatinine... and my creatinine is not normal. So I found a eGFR calculator from the createnine levels. And aparently the lower createnine is, the higher the eGFR is. So I guess my kidneys are fine. Anyway, the loosing muscle problem is still there, so I guess i'm going to focus on eating more protein and exercise.

      Mate I just literally had it done a week ago and still waiting on my results. Yeah you’re right doctors in OZ don’t even know what it is so I had to actually show my doctor. You can get it done anywhere though and The pathology ended up charging me $68 for it as it’s not covered under Medicare (I don’t mind that). What were your results like on Cstatin c as opposed to creatinine?? If you don’t mind me asking that is. I got my eGFR yesterday which was 69, creatinine 110 but I do have a bit more muscle mass on me compared to the average guy.

    • @stevetaylor3273
      @stevetaylor3273 3 роки тому

      @@Guyver782000 Hey Mate,
      Oh good to know you can get it done anywhere. Yeh it sounds like we are quite similar actually. I have quite a bit of muscle as well, plus eat quite a high amount of beef( usually around 600-800gms per day), and train with heavy weights a lot. My Creatinine is consistently at 125 which gave me an eGFR of 64 so was quite concerned. As Im sure you know, diets high in muscle meat contain a lot of creatine and muscle mass plus training hard also elevate blood creatinine, so decided to get the cystatin C test as its considered a more accurate indicator of kidney health than creatinine for those like us. My Cystatin C came back at 0.81 (normal range is between 0.6-1), so this put my eGFR at 114 based on a Cystatin C calculator.
      I would also be interested in trying another creatinine blood test where I avoid a lot of beef and muscle meat for a while to see what the results would be like. However getting a good Cystatin C test result was quite reassuring.
      All the best with your results mate!

      Cystatin c test is the gold standard. Egfr is super unreliable as there are way to many outside factors that can screw up the results almost always to then negative. Egfr does not even represent a single method of testing. There are multiple ways and multiple calculations between the different ways of doing an Egfr. I would trust a Cystatin c test over an Egfr any day. Especially if you eat high protein diets or do a lot of exercise/physically labor. Body builders especially based on muscle mass will often get bizarre, inaccurate numbers indicting extreme kidney failure while having no sign of failure because it’s false reading and the kidney function is fine.
