My hands started doing these mudras out of nowhere when when i first started meditating. I didn't even know mudras or these hand gestures were a thing. I've never seen it before meditating. My body just started moving on its own.
I realized I've been using this my hole life subconsciously 25 years In on my journey. Trying to understand why my unconscious took the driver seat but all is as its supposed to be. Gotta keep your physical form safe and trust the universe to guide us

Same here but the mudras i do instinctively are ancient I was told by a master, not even these modern ones. Its a reincarnation. I still dont know what they mean, but i do a lot the Christ mudra when im in deep meditation

The very fact that humans all over the planet place both hands together is a Mudra and is in no way an Eastern practice solely . Because whether one believes it or not, humanity puts its hands together to place themselves within God's presence and fail to realize that it's within them and not outside of them , that there communion with God is happening!

As a Bengali I can tell you that when someone dies in our family we need to do Ritual Works also known as S r a d d h h y a (Sraddho). In that entire process (it takes 4 to 5 hours) we have to perform various Mudras as per the instruction of the priest/s.
Also in Durga Puja, Kali Puja etc. if one accompanies the priest several mudras need to be performed.
Actually not only in West Bengal, in entire India whether in Sraddho Work or in Puja mudras are a must.
As I hold a Master Degree in Pure Physics from Calcutta University the EM Theory of Mudras is a crucial point here. Also in Vedanta, these Mudras are explained thoroughly. Buddha (Goutam Siddhartha) mostly uses Avay Mudra which is only a being like Buddha, Sri Krishna, Jesus, they but none can offer.

When I meditate my hands would automatically go in a Lotus Flower mudra . Which means opening your heart center to welcome Love from the Universe into the world. Love is the Universal Language

The acupressure point for pineal gland is located at tips of thumbs and big toes. In yoga some asanas hold these points as it is held in many mudras.

Funny sometimes when I’m in a flow yoga class, if I do a Mudra, the instructor tells me to keep my hands flat or my palms open! But I do this instinctively because my first form of yoga was kundalini, and we did many!

Until recently the majority of humanity didn't have the leisure time for these practices. Humanity was engaged in a struggle for survival. Therefore the preaching to was necessary at the time by those who would dedicated themselves to the teaching. But like everything else in life, things get corrupted and used for the advantage of a few.
Just think that in today's world there are many who have little or clear understanding of things. This knowledge would go over their heads in an instant. What's worse is that there are still people easily led and misguided, never bothering to question anything.
They just rather be led than shown the way, for them to find it on their own. The majority of people are sheepple!

What if one is missing a thumb? Will that affect the effects of the mudras? If so, then what?
Allot of it is comfort even insecurities you cross your arms when you’re subconsciously wanting to close yourself off. You out ther finger tips tigether while sitting cus it’s a false sense of comfort I’ve taken classes on this allot of it pretty unimportant in this way but are definitely forms of unconscious communication of where that Edson is inside as far as comfort and confidence. When your conscious and subconscious are one is when you really see.
Folding our arms across the chest also opens up the lung cavity for clearer breathing either when we're seated or standing up. Its more noticeable when standing...
