Paul was a bully, a pain in the arse, would flip out at a moments notice, yet had a side of him that I loved. He was very close to my dad and as a kid he taught me to box and a lot of life lessons. Say what you want about the guy, I agree with most comments, but he’ll always have a place in my heart!
Did he ever ask you to do up your shoelaces?

Boom Boom!
makes me laugh that doormen are on here saying he was a bully and they would have turfed syksey out. yea course you would. a british level hw boxer with a hair trigger temper and the mental make up of a pyschopath vs a steroid filled pudding who was most likely bullied at school. yea ok johnny bravo, if ya say so

Chris Campbell - Awesome bloke! He was one of my instructors at Josh Johnsons Yid Ga Ling martial arts academy back in the late 80's.
I bumped into Paul on a few occasions when I was a young lad. Funny bloke!
Hi Jammie (if I may), you’ve done a real good job in presenting Paul Sykes’s life and the enigma that was Paul Sykes, even if he doesn’t deserve such an accolade. Well done!
Thank you very much Joe. 🙏
In 1990 I was 17 and just started going to rooftop Gardens and can remember numerous times Paul being in and a group of bouncers trying to get him out with a look of fear on there face. Tbh he mostly went quietly at this time of his life.

I tell you who should play Paul perfectly in a film , that lad out of "the office" who plays Chris Finch the rep, he would have to do a few steroids to bulk up but he looks SO much like Paul already and he talks like him, he is tall enough also.

He was a rapist
Very interesting indeed. I worked Liverpool doors from 1989-2016, and came across a lot of dangerous people, not all as big as Sykes, but equally as dangerous. However, I wouldn’t have liked to have met Sykes on his travels.
I met syksie about 40 times from 1990 to around 2004.
Nobody could touch Sykes in his prime. Hard as nails and untouchable
and an absolute t w a t
Tell that to John L Gardener
Les Carr was the top bouncer in Wakey for several decades. He had such a reputation that his sheer presence prevented any trouble . His reputation was that he was very polite ,vety fair and very calm with an amazing memory for faces . He basically gave people the option to go away but they could come in another day when sober enough but if they wanted to fight everyone knew what the outcome would be . Imagine me as an ordinary twenty something entering Casanovas/Rooftops Gardens then later the big bar on the corner thats now part of the Reflex group and Les saying 'evening ' as I passed him on the door . He eventually had to pack it in after a lad in a group from Coventry on a stag do died after an altercation with Les but witnesses said it was a case of him banging his head as he fell to the floor during this altercation so I don't think he did any time for that but was banned from the City Centre and couldn't do doors anymore .

I am amazed somebody didn't get blummin killed. I used to go to the nightclubs in Wakefield, Batley, Huddersfield etc. I was a little obnoxious shit when I was 18 years old. I would sometimes be a pain, causing trouble basically. I am just glad I wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time because I couldn't fight for toffee. Paul Sykes would have loved my gobby little "I'll see ya outside" attitude. You just don't know who you are fighting. Man, I was such a pathetic twat. Great video mate. Gonna buy those books too :)
@Lee Winterbottom Nice one Lee! I'm stoked you liked my comment mate. Take care Brother :)
This rings very close to home mate. I was the same haha 😵
Nail on the head with that comment, I think a lot of young lads are like this and I was one of them. Full of bravado when pissed and then hoping I wouldn’t bump into the same people when sober. I see it when looking at lads walking around pubs or towns full of drink walking through people like Richard Ashcroft in the bittersweet symphony video. I cringe when I think of how I was.
There's nothing these folk fear more than someone cool headed who will just pull a gun and calmly assure it would be used. Top Streetfighter in Britain - a shooter.
I met Paul 1987ish in Durham jail and he used to call everyone around him cornflakes. At meal times he would just help himself and the screws said tuck all.
Love real comments like this.
Didn't end well for him when he tried it with Fred the head.
Didn’t Sykes knock two screws out in Durham? I think because late opening the gym.

I worked in Leeds area, Wakefield etc in between 1980 and 1990 , from 17 years of old , as an air conditioning engineer apprentice . We would see Sykes in a few pubs with people telling us he was the local Leeds hard case, pro boxer etc and you could see he had an aura of menace about him. I was a amateur boxer from 10 to 19 when my work away from home in digs got in the way so had to give it up I know how to fight and I know a fighter . As I’ve said before Sykes was a proper fighter , a solid puncher with a good 18 stone behind his belts. Pity he couldn’t keep it all together because away from the alcohol he was an engaging character who could have cleaned up and made a great living on the after dinner meet and greet circuit. Rip.
Agreed, thanks for the story, great input.
Absolutely, Are you still local
To the area and doing air conditioning Noel ?
I grew up in Wakefield I’m 22 now but my mum met him and was drinking I think… in the crown pub at the bottom of the road where I grew up in alverthorpe said he came in on Christmas time when she was drinking with a friend and my mum said at the time he looked homeless and probably just wanted a drink and to stay out of the cold and she said he seemed like a nice man or not a bad man and the woman behind the counter said he had to stay away from the bar and not cause trouble and at the time my mum didn’t know who he was and the woman told my mum it was Paul Sykes and She didn’t think much of it but my grandad used to say he used to cross the “syksesy” crossed the road so whether sensationalism or whether he just hadn’t had anything to drink when he met my mum and my grandad had heard more and was well informed I can’t say as I don’t know for sure

He’s in one of the books I think
Back in 1998 I can remember reading an article about this man and until I watched this video I couldn't remember for the life of me who it was about!
Certain things stuck in my mind. The article me mentioned his incredible fitness level, a resting heart rate of 50 which was the samoas Bjorn Borg, but it also touched on his injuries.
I remember a frayed elbow tendon and shot knee ligaments written about and it always stuck in my mind as I had the same elbow tendon injury from boxing.
I was 25 then so I'm almost 48 now and the one thing I took from reading it was that he maybe had a massive sense of regret for the life he had lived and the pain he had caused, probably to a lot of innocent people?
It's funny how these " hard men" burn out so quickly and maybe there is a sense of karma here?
It is always the case, things catch up with us all eventually, if we’re not nice
@@warcrypublishing Agreed. It's funny how hard men look to build a reputation without, a lot of the time, putting themselves in tough situations. When I boxed I realized that a lot of doormen ( not all) had strength in numbers and a rep built on nothing really spectacular.
My gramp fought in and survived Ww2 and yet remained humble and dignified until the day he died. A lot of these guys survived situations a lot worse than anything these bullies did. To me they are true ",hard men"
@Mark Sesum Yep. And what goes around comes around....
Tery Mitchell tells a different story
And I'm gonna go with Terry
Very humble guy
Terry's story is in the book Unfinished Agony, this video isn't really about Terry, he worked the doors in Leeds (not Wakefield)

He never loved anyone but himself in his life. People like him are incapable of giving or receiving love and look upon anyone weaker than themselves as prey.
I've said this before and I'll say it again.I know for certain that Kath won't have slept a wink when he was due out of prison.
She won't have had a penny to do the shopping with because pisshead Sykes took all her money for booze. @Stanly Stud you sound like one of his victims 😂
He's lucky he didn't get shot and if he would have done Duffy so easy then why were they kept apart ? Cos Duffy was young and fit and Sykes was a badly ill man, even at 40 odd.
In the ring, yes. In a real world fight + no chance - Duffy would kill him.
That's why Duffy hated him - cos he knew he was beatable and bullying kids with no fighting skill. No hardman wants to be known as a fiddler and Sykes should have thought of that.
Again + aged 30 + in the ring, Sykes would run all over Lee. But, things weren't like that and Cockerill would have snapped him in half.
Unfair for the guy - cos the doc shows him ageing and ill. The young Sykes + different story and I'd agree to that fully. 👍
