  • In this video I show you the differences between the 4AGE 16V bigport and smallport pistons.
    The most obvious difference of course being the piston dome and cutouts for the oil cooler jets that can be found on the smallport pistons.
    There are also differences in the ring grooves and some other minor stuff.
    bigport compression ratio - 9.4:1
    smallport compression ratio - 10.3:1

    Hello,
    thank you very much for your istructions. Only few minutes left to order wrong pistons... I'm looking for small port ones, can you provide some advices?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  7 років тому +1

      Toyota does not make them anymore. You can try ebay. I bought mine on ebay. You can also find the part number on toyodiy.com. If you want smallport ones just look for the domed pistons. They were only present in the AE-92 Corolla.

      Thanks once again. So, I have Ae92 Corolla. Are there any chance/way to replace them? Only AE92, not in AE86?

    • @emirkurtovic2790
      @emirkurtovic2790 7 років тому +1

      Have you taken the engine apart and taken a look at the pistons? If you have domed pistons, then you have high compression (10.3:1) smallport pistons, if you have a flat crown on your pistons than you have low compression (9.3:1 I think). www.ebay.com/itm/TC2989-020-DOME-TOP-Pistons-Rings-1989-92-1-6L-TOYOTA-COROLLA-GEO-PRIZM-4AGE-/361750943086?hash=item543a09556e:g:JnkAAOSwWBJXBHXd&vxp=mtr
      Here's everything you need to replace the pistons. Beware these are 0.5mm overbore, which means you need to bore your cylinders 0.5mm at a machine shop (probably a good idea). If you have more money you can buy some forged ones for even more compression. It all depends on your budget and goals.
      Your first step is to take the engine apart and then bring it to a reputable machine shop that knows what they're doing so they can tell you what needs to be replaced.

    U thought bigport used 18mm wrist pins and smallport is 20mm.Did u have to use the smallport connecting rods?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  5 років тому

      Late bigport and smallport have the same size rod small ends, it's the early bigport that has smaller rods.

    will the smartport piston fit on my bluetop 4age and will that increase power on the engine

    • @d4a
      @d4a  8 років тому +1

      +Javier Broger theyre called smallport....although you should copyright that name and try and sell it to a car manufacturer :). Smallport pistons wont fit into a bluetop i.e. early 4age 16v bigport. Early gen 4age 16v use press-fit pins, while the smallport ones use pin retainer clips. So unfortunately they won't fit. But a early gen 16v is still great because its has a lighter rotating assembly and can be even better than a late bigport if built right. Look around and you will find OST's early bigport build and see what I mean.

    I thought the 4age is a non interference engine, don't the cutouts on the Pistons mean it is an interference engine?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  5 років тому +2

      It is non interference. If you put the piston at top dead center and you open the valves fully (by making a few full rotations of each camshaft), the valves sit nicely in those cutouts but don't touch the piston. Even with the smallport domed pistons the engine remains non interference and the cutouts are part of the reason why it is so. If you were to cut the head a lot, and maybe get some high lift cams than it would no longer be non-interference.

    • @d4a

      Valves might still be bent, because the intake and exhaust valves might have hit each other, or the engine might not be fully stock

    could you say "uhhh" one more time?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  9 років тому +10

      superhyphy129 What would be the purpose of your comment? I made a video containing useful information that is very hard to find elsewhere online. I believe that fact is far more relevant than pointing out some irrelevant piece of information such as me saying uhhh to many times.
      I am sure you are capable of seeing that I (like 99% of youtube) am not a professional and don't have access to professional equipment but still try to create useful and helpful content to the best of my abilities. Trying to find flaws in content such as mine and not seeing it for what it is, simply serves to showcase your poor understanding of youtube, rather than anything about my video.
      What is also interesting is that people posting comments such as yours, that point out irrelevant yet justifiable flaws on other people'c content usually have none or very low value content of their own.
      So what is very peculiar is the source of your self-righteousness. Luckily for you I believe the source is immaturity and insufficient knowledge of the world, which will pass soon enough.
      I hope my reply to you was more constructive than irritating and that it will help you to progress personally. I managed to see your content as constructive criticism, despite the provocative and somewhat insulting tone you posted it in, and will try to improve my speaking and say uhhh as least as possible. I thank you for that.
